We present one of the deepest radio continuum surveys to date at a wavelength ~1 meter, at 324.5 MHz. The data reduction and analysis are described and an electronic catalog of the sources detected above 5 sigma is presented. We also discuss the observed angular size distribution for the sample. Using our deeper 20cm survey of the same field, we calculate spectral indices for sources detected in both surveys. The spectral indices for 90cm-selected sources, defined as S ~nu^(-alpha}, shows a peak near 0.7 and only a few sources with very steep spectra. Thus no large population of very steep spectrum microJy sources seems to exist down to the limit of our survey.
For 20cm-selected sources, we find similar mean spectral indices for sources with S_20>1 mJy. For weaker sources, below the detection limit for individual sources at 90cm, we use stacking to study the radio spectra. We find that the spectral indices of small (<3") 20cm-selected sources with S_20< 10 mJy have mean and median alpha(90,20)~0.3-0.5. This is flatter than the spectral indices of the stronger source population.
We report log N-log S counts at 90cm which show a flattening below 5 mJy. Given the median redshift of the population, z~1, the spectral flattening and the flattening of the log N-log S counts occurs at radio luminosities normally associated with AGN rather than with galaxies dominated by star-formation.
We present the optical spectra of a sample of 34 SWIRE-CDFS sources observed with EFOSC2 on the ESO 3.6m Telescope. We have used the spectra and spectroscopic redshifts to validate our photometric redshift codes and SED template fitting methods. 12 of our sources are Infrared Luminous Galaxies. Of these, five belong to the class of ULIRGs and one to the class of HLIRGs with evidence of both an AGN and starburst component contributing to their extreme infrared luminosity for 3, starburst contributing for 1 and AGN contributing for 2 of them.
We explore the nature of X-ray sources with 70 micron counterparts selected in the SWIRE fields ELAIS-N1, Lockman Hole and Chandra Deep Field South, for which Chandra X-ray data are available. A total of 28 X-ray/70 micron sources in the redshift interval 0.5<z<1.3 are selected. The X-ray luminosities and the shape of the X-ray spectra show that these sources are AGN. Modelling of the optical to far-infrared Spectral Energy Distribution indicates that most of them (27/28) have a strong starburst component (>50 solar masses per year) that dominates in the infrared. It is found that the X-ray an…
We present a study of a 20cm selected sample in the Deep SWIRE VLA Field, reaching a limiting flux density of ~13.5 uJy at the image center. In a 0.6x0.6 square degrees field, we are able to assign an optical/IR counterpart to 97% of the radio sources. Up to 11 passbands from the NUV to 4.5um are then used to sample the spectral energy distribution (SED) of these counterparts in order to investigate the nature of the host galaxies. By means of an SED template library and stellar population synthesis models we estimate photometric redshifts, stellar masses, and stellar population properties, di…
Recent works have suggested that selection criteria based on MIR colors can be used to reveal a population of dust-enshrouded, extremely luminous quasars at z>1. However the X-ray spectral properties of these intriguing sources still remain largely unexplored. We report on an X-ray spectroscopic study of a sample of 44 very bright mid-IR galaxies with extreme mid-IR to optical flux ratios (MIR/O>2000). The X-ray coverage of the sample is highly inhomogeneous (from snap-shot 5 ks Chandra observations to medium-deep XMM exposures of 70 ks) and, consequently, a sizable fraction of them (~43%) rem…
We present spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 68 Herschel sources detected at 5-sigma at 250, 350 and 500 mu in the HerMES SWIRE-Lockman field. We explore whether existing models for starbursts, quiescent star-forming galaxies and for AGN dust tori are able to model the full range of SEDs measured with Herschel. We find that while many galaxies (~ 56 %) are well fitted with the templates used to fit IRAS, ISO and Spitzer sources, for about half the galaxies two new templates are required: quiescent ('cirrus') models with colder (10-20 K) dust, and a young starburst model with higher opti…
Herschel and Planck are surveying the sky at unprecedented angular scales and sensitivities over large areas. But both experiments are limited by source confusion in the submillimeter. The high confusion noise in particular restricts the study of the clustering properties of the sources that dominate the cosmic infrared background. At these wavelengths, it is more appropriate to consider the statistics of the unresolved component. In particular, high clustering will contribute in excess of Poisson noise in the power spectra of CIB anisotropies. These power spectra contain contributions from so…
We describe the Carnegie-Spitzer-IMACS (CSI) Survey, a wide-field, near-IR selected spectrophotometric redshift survey with the Inamori Magellan Areal Camera and Spectrograph (IMACS) on Magellan-Baade. By defining a flux-limited sample of galaxies in Spitzer 3.6micron imaging of SWIRE fields, the CSI Survey efficiently traces the stellar mass of average galaxies to z~1.5. This first paper provides an overview of the survey selection, observations, processing of the photometry and spectrophotometry. We also describe the processing of the data: new methods of fitting synthetic templates of spect…
In the past decade, the properties of annihilating dark matter models were examined by various kinds of data, including the data of gamma rays, radio waves, X-ray, positrons, electrons, antiprotons and neutrinos. In particular, most of the studies focus on the data of our Galaxy, nearby galaxies (e.g. M31 galaxy) or nearby galaxy clusters (e.g. Fornax cluster). In this article, we examine the archival radio continuum spectral data of a relatively high-redshift galaxy cluster (A697 cluster) to constrain the properties of annihilating dark matter. We find that leptophilic annihilation channels (…
We investigate the variability of the continuum and broad lines in QSO spectra (particularly in the H$β$ line and continuum at $λ$ 5100 Å) caused by microlensing of a diffuse massive structure (like an open star cluster). We modeled the continuum and line emitting region and simulate a lensing event by a star cluster located in an intervening galaxy. Such a type of microlensing event can have a significant influence on magnification and centroid shift of the broad lines and continuum source. We explore relationships between the continuum and broad line flux variability during the microlensing …
Continuum fitting is an important aspect of Lyman-alpha forest science, since errors in the estimated optical depths scale with the fractional continuum error. However, traditional methods of estimating continua in noisy and moderate-resolution spectra (S/N < 10 pixel^-1 and R ~ 2000, respectively, such as SDSS) using power-law extrapolation or the mean spectrum, achieve no better than ~ 10-15% RMS accuracy. To improve on this, we introduce mean-flux regulated/principal component analysis (MF-PCA) continuum fitting. In this technique, PCA fitting is carried out redwards of the quasar Lyman-alp…
In this letter we report the discovery of a z=4.88 radio galaxy discovered with a new technique which does not rely on pre-selection of a sample based on radio properties such as steep-spectral index or small angular size. This radio galaxy was discovered in the Elais-N2 field and has a spectral index of alpha = 0.75, i.e. not ultra-steep spectrum. It also has a luminosity consistent with being drawn from the break of the radio luminosity function and can therefore be considered as a typical radio galaxy. Using the Spitzer-SWIRE data over this field we find that the host galaxy is consistent w…
We present early results from Radio Galaxy Zoo, a web-based citizen science project for visual inspection and classification of images from all-sky radio surveys. The goals of the project are to classify individual radio sources (particularly galaxies with multiple lobes and/or complex morphologies) as well as matching the continuum radio emission to the host galaxy. Radio images come from the FIRST and ATLAS surveys, while matches to potential hosts are performed with infrared imaging from WISE and SWIRE. The first twelve months of classification yielded more than 1 million classifications of…
Here we present results of the long-term (1987-2010) optical spectral monitoring of the broad line radio galaxy Arp 102B, a prototype of active galactic nuclei with the double-peaked broad emission lines, usually assumed to be emitted from an accretion disk. To explore the structure of the broad line region (BLR), we analyze the light curves of the broad Hαand Hβlines and the continuum flux. We aim to estimate the dimensions of the broad-line emitting regions and the mass of the central black hole. We use the CCF to find lags between the lines and continuum variations. We investigate in more d…
We present a statistical study of the correlations and dimensionality of emission lines carried out on a sample of over 40,000 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxies. Using principal component analysis, we found that the equivalent widths of the 11 strongest lines can be well represented using three parameters. We also explore correlations of the emission pattern with the eigenspace representation of the continuum spectrum. The observed relations are used to provide an empirical prescription for expectation values and variances of emission-line strengths as a function of spectral shape. We s…
We compiled a sample of 60 quasars with spectroscopy on at least six epochs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to study the variabilities of the spectral shape, the continuum and the emission lines luminosity. In this paper, we present the results of SDSS J030639.57+000343.1. We found a strong anti-correlation between the continuum luminosity at $5100 Å$ and the spectral index, implying a bluer-when-brighter trend. The luminosity of the broad $\rm H_α$ line is proportion to the continuum luminosity at $5100 Å$. Correspondingly, we did not find strong correlation between the equivalent wi…
We describe the Carnegie-Spitzer-IMACS (CSI) Survey, a wide-field, near-IR selected spectrophotometric redshift survey with IMACS on Magellan-Baade. CSI uses a flux-limited sample of galaxies in Spitzer IRAC 3.6micron imaging of SWIRE fields to efficiently trace the stellar mass of average galaxies to z~1.5. This paper provides an overview of the survey selection, observations, and processing of the photometry and spectrophotometry. We also describe the analysis of the data: new methods of fitting synthetic SEDs are used to derive redshifts, stellar masses, emission line luminosities, and coar…
The fraction of ionizing photons (fesc) that escape from z>6 galaxies is an important parameter when assessing the role of these objects in the reionization of the Universe, but the opacity of the intergalactic medium precludes a direct measurement of fesc for individual galaxies at these epochs. We argue, that since fesc regulates the impact of nebular emission on the spectra of galaxies, it should nonetheless be possible to indirectly probe fesc well into the reionization epoch. As a first step, we demonstrate that by combining measurements of the rest-frame UV slope beta with the equivalent…
Modeling quasar spectra is a fundamental task in astrophysics as quasars are the tell-tale sign of cosmic evolution. We introduce a novel unsupervised learning algorithm, Quasar Factor Analysis (QFA), for recovering the intrinsic quasar continua from noisy quasar spectra. QFA assumes that the Ly$α$ forest can be approximated as a Gaussian process, and the continuum can be well described as a latent factor model. We show that QFA can learn, through unsupervised learning and directly from the quasar spectra, the quasar continua and Ly$α$ forest simultaneously. Compared to previous methods, QFA a…
The ionizing fluxes from quasars and other active galactic nuclei (AGN) are critical for interpreting the emission-line spectra of AGN and for photoionization and heating of the intergalactic medium. Using ultraviolet spectra from the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we have directly measured the rest-frame ionizing continua and emission lines for 22 AGN. Over the redshift range 0.026 < z < 1.44, COS samples the Lyman continuum and many far-UV emission lines (Lya 1216, C IV 1549, Si IV/OIV] 1400, N V 1240, O VI 1035). Strong EUV emission lines with 14-22 e…
The substantial decrease in star formation density from z=1 to the present day is curious given the relatively constant neutral gas density over the same epoch. Future radio astronomy facilities, including the SKA and pathfinder telescopes, will provide pioneering measures of both the gas content of galaxies and star formation activity over cosmological timescales. Here we investigate the commensalities between neutral atomic gas (HI) and radio continuum observations, as well as the complementarity of the data products. We start with the proposed HI and continuum surveys to be undertaken with …
Using four different suites of cosmological simulations, we generate synthetic spectra for galaxies with different Lyman continuum escape fractions (fesc) at redshifts z=7-9, in the rest-frame wavelength range relevant for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRSpec instrument. By investigating the effects of realistic star formation histories and metallicity distributions on the EW(Hb)-beta diagram (previously proposed as a tool for identifying galaxies with very high fesc), we find that neither of these effects are likely to jeopardize the identification of galaxies with extreme Lyman cont…
We investigate the use of closure phase as a method to detect the HI 21cm signal from the neutral IGM during cosmic reionzation. Closure quantities have the unique advantage of being independent of antenna-based calibration terms. We employ realistic, large area sky models from Sims et al. (2016). These include an estimate of the HI 21cm signal generated using 21cm FAST, plus continuum models of both the diffuse Galactic synchrotron emission and the extragalactic point sources. We employ the CASA simulator and adopt the Dillon-Parsons HERA configuration to generate a uv measurement set. We the…
