We introduce the concept of concatenated tensor networks to efficiently describe quantum states. We show that the corresponding concatenated tensor network states can efficiently describe time evolution and possess arbitrary block-wise entanglement and long-ranged correlations. We illustrate the approach for the enhancement of matrix product states, i.e. 1D tensor networks, where we replace each of the matrices of the original matrix product state with another 1D tensor network. This procedure yields a 2D tensor network, which includes -- already for tensor dimension two -- all states that can be prepared by circuits of polynomially many (possibly non-unitary) two-qubit quantum operations, as well as states resulting from time evolution with respect to Hamiltonians with short-ranged interactions. We investigate the possibility to efficiently extract information from these states, which serves as the basic step in a variational optimization procedure. To this aim we utilize known exact and approximate methods for 2D tensor networks and demonstrate some improvements thereof, which are also applicable e.g. in the context of 2D projected entangled pair states. We generalize the approach to higher dimensional- and tree tensor networks.
In this paper, we present a new construction of asymmetric quantum codes (AQCs) by combining classical concatenated codes (CCs) with tensor product codes (TPCs), called asymmetric quantum concatenated and tensor product codes (AQCTPCs) which have the following three advantages. First, only the outer codes in AQCTPCs need to satisfy the orthogonal constraint in quantum codes, and any classical linear code can be used for the inner, which makes AQCTPCs very easy to construct. Second, most AQCTPCs are highly degenerate, which means they can correct many more errors than their classical TPC counte…
Entanglement distribution is a core mechanism for the future quantum Internet. The quantum world is, however, a faulty environment. Hence, successful entanglement swapping is error-prone. The occurrence of quantum state errors can be mitigated using purification and error correction, which can be repeated in the former case and concatenated in the latter case. Repeated purification merges low-fidelity qubits into higher-quality ones, while concatenated error correction builds upon the redundancy of quantum information. In this article, we study in-depth and compare the two options: repeated pu…
The concatenated Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (C-GHZ) state has great potential application in the future quantum network, for it is robust to the decoherence in a noisy environment. In the paper, we propose a complete C-GHZ state analysis protocol with the help of some auxiliary single atoms trapped in the low-quality cavities. In the protocol, we essentially make the parity check for the photonic states based on the photonic Faraday rotation effect, and complete the analysis task combined with the Hadamard operation and single qubit measurement. The success probability of our protocol can rea…
Future quantum devices often rely on favourable scaling with respect to the system components. To achieve desirable scaling, it is therefore crucial to implement unitary transformations in an efficient manner. We develop an upper bound for the minimum time required to implement a unitary transformation on a generic qubit network in which each of the qubits is subject to local time dependent controls. The set of gates is characterized that can be implemented in a time that scales at most polynomially in the number of qubits. Furthermore, we show how qubit systems can be concatenated through con…
Tensor network methods are incredibly effective for simulating quantum circuits. This is due to their ability to efficiently represent and manipulate the wave-functions of large interacting quantum systems. We describe the challenges faced when scaling tensor network simulation approaches to Exascale compute platforms and introduce QuantEx, a framework for tensor network circuit simulation at Exascale.
Tensor-network codes enable the construction of large stabilizer codes out of tensors describing smaller stabilizer codes. An application of tensor-network codes was an efficient and exact decoder for holographic codes. Here, we show how to write some topological codes, including the surface code and colour code, as simple tensor-network codes. We also show how to calculate distances of stabilizer codes by contracting a tensor network. The algorithm actually gives more information, including a histogram of all logical coset weights. We prove that this method is efficient in the case of hologra…
A tensor network is a product of tensors associated with vertices of some graph $G$ such that every edge of $G$ represents a summation (contraction) over a matching pair of indexes. It was shown recently by Valiant, Cai, and Choudhary that tensor networks can be efficiently contracted on planar graphs if components of every tensor obey a system of quadratic equations known as matchgate identities. Such tensors are referred to as matchgate tensors. The present paper provides an alternative approach to contraction of matchgate tensor networks that easily extends to non-planar graphs. Specificall…
We introduce a new open-source software library Jet, which uses task-based parallelism to obtain speed-ups in classical tensor-network simulations of quantum circuits. These speed-ups result from i) the increased parallelism introduced by mapping the tensor-network simulation to a task-based framework, ii) a novel method of reusing shared work between tensor-network contraction tasks, and iii) the concurrent contraction of tensor networks on all available hardware. We demonstrate the advantages of our method by benchmarking our code on several Sycamore-53 and Gaussian boson sampling (GBS) supr…
We provide a systematic approach to quantum mechanics from an information-theoretic perspective using the language of tensor networks. Our formulation needs only a single kind of object, so-called positive *-tensors. Physical models translate experimental setups into networks of these *-tensors, and the evaluation of the resulting networks yields the probability distributions describing measurement outcomes. The idea behind our approach is similar to categorical formulations of quantum mechanics. However, our formulation is mathematically simpler and less abstract. Our presentation of the core…
We present a general framework for the construction of quantum tensor product codes (QTPC). In a classical tensor product code (TPC), its parity check matrix is con- structed via the tensor product of parity check matrices of the two component codes. We show that by adding some constraints on the component codes, several classes of dual-containing TPCs can be obtained. By selecting different types of component codes, the proposed method enables the construction of a large family of QTPCs and they can provide a wide variety of quantum error control abilities. In particular, if one of the compon…
We present an overview of the key ideas and skills necessary to begin implementing tensor network methods numerically, which is intended to facilitate the practical application of tensor network methods for researchers that are already versed with their theoretical foundations. These skills include an introduction to the contraction of tensor networks, to optimal tensor decompositions, and to the manipulation of gauge degrees of freedom in tensor networks. The topics presented are of key importance to many common tensor network algorithms such as DMRG, TEBD, TRG, PEPS and MERA.
Tensor networks are used to efficiently approximate states of strongly-correlated quantum many-body systems. More generally, tensor network approximations may allow to reduce the costs for operating on an order-$N$ tensor from exponential to polynomial in $N$, and this has become a popular approach for machine learning. We introduce the idea of imposing low-rank constraints on the tensors that compose the tensor network. With this modification, the time and space complexities for the network optimization can be substantially reduced while maintaining high accuracy. We detail this idea for tree…
Tensor network algorithms have been remarkably successful solving a variety of problems in quantum many-body physics. However, algorithms to optimize two-dimensional tensor networks known as PEPS lack many of the aspects that make the seminal density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm so powerful for optimizing one-dimensional tensor networks known as matrix product states. We implement a framework for optimizing two-dimensional PEPS tensor networks which includes all of steps that make DMRG so successful for optimizing one-dimension tensor networks. We present results for several 2…
Quantum annealers manufactured by D-Wave Systems, Inc., are computational devices capable of finding high-quality solutions of NP-hard problems. In this contribution, we explore the potential and effectiveness of such quantum annealers for computing Boolean tensor networks. Tensors offer a natural way to model high-dimensional data commonplace in many scientific fields, and representing a binary tensor as a Boolean tensor network is the task of expressing a tensor containing categorical (i.e., {0, 1}) values as a product of low dimensional binary tensors. A Boolean tensor network is computed b…
We describe an approach to fix the gauge degrees of freedom in tensor networks, including those with closed loops, which allows a canonical form for arbitrary tensor networks to be realized. Additionally, a measure for the internal correlations present in a tensor network is proposed, which quantifies the extent of resonances around closed loops in the network. Finally we describe an algorithm for the optimal truncation of an internal index from a tensor network, based upon proper removal of the redundant internal correlations. These results, which offer a unified theoretical framework for the…

We study the representational power of Boltzmann machines (a type of neural network) in quantum many-body systems. We prove that any (local) tensor network state has a (local) neural network representation. The construction is almost optimal in the sense that the number of parameters in the neural network representation is almost linear in the number of nonzero parameters in the tensor network representation. Despite the difficulty of representing (gapped) chiral topological states with local tensor networks, we construct a quasi-local neural network representation for a chiral $p$-wave superc…

We introduce deep tensor networks, which are exponentially wide neural networks based on the tensor network representation of the weight matrices. We evaluate the proposed method on the image classification (MNIST, FashionMNIST) and sequence prediction (cellular automata) tasks. In the image classification case, deep tensor networks improve our matrix product state baselines and achieve 0.49% error rate on MNIST and 8.3% error rate on FashionMNIST. In the sequence prediction case, we demonstrate an exponential improvement in the number of parameters compared to the one-layer tensor network met…
Inspired by holographic codes and tensor-network decoders, we introduce tensor-network stabilizer codes which come with a natural tensor-network decoder. These codes can correspond to any geometry, but, as a special case, we generalize holographic codes beyond those constructed from perfect or block-perfect isometries, and we give an example that corresponds to neither. Using the tensor-network decoder, we find a threshold of 18.8% for this code under depolarizing noise. We also show that for holographic codes the exact tensor-network decoder (with no bond-dimension truncation) is efficient wi…
The intuitiveness of the tensor network graphical language is becoming well known through its use in numerical simulations using methods from tensor network algorithms. Recent times have also seen rapid progress in developing equations of motion to predict the time evolution of quantum entanglement [Nature Physics, 4(\textbf{4}):99, 2008]. Here we cast these recent results into a tensor network framework and in doing so, construct a theory which exposes the topological equivalence of the evolution of a family of entanglement monotones in arbitrary dimensions. This unification was accomplished …
We present a conceptually clear and algorithmically useful framework for parameterizing the costs of tensor network contraction. Our framework is completely general, applying to tensor networks with arbitrary bond dimensions, open legs, and hyperedges. The fundamental objects of our framework are rooted and unrooted contraction trees, which represent classes of contraction orders. Properties of a contraction tree correspond directly and precisely to the time and space costs of tensor network contraction. The properties of rooted contraction trees give the costs of parallelized contraction algo…
Most research in quantum computing today is performed against simulations of quantum computers rather than true quantum computers. Simulating a quantum computer entails implementing all of the unitary operators corresponding to the quantum gates as tensors. For high numbers of qubits, performing tensor multiplications for these simulations becomes quite expensive, since $N$-qubit gates correspond to $2^{N}$-dimensional tensors. One way to accelerate such a simulation is to use field programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware to efficiently compute the matrix multiplications. Though FPGAs can effi…
Recently developed tensor network methods demonstrate great potential for addressing the quantum many-body problem, by constructing variational spaces with polynomially, instead of exponentially, scaled parameters. Constructing such an efficient tensor network, and thus the variational space, is a subtle problem and the main obstacle of the method. We demonstrate the necessity of size consistency in tensor network methods for their success in addressing the quantum many-body problem. We further demonstrate that size consistency is independent of the entanglement criterion, thus providing a gen…
We describe the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz for the spin-1/2 XXX and XXZ Heisenberg chains with open and periodic boundary conditions in terms of tensor networks. These Bethe eigenstates have the structure of Matrix Product States with a conserved number of down-spins. The tensor network formulation suggestes possible extensions of the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz to two dimensions.
An algorithm for optimizing the MERA tensor network in an infinite system is presented. Using this technique we compute the critical exponents of Ising and XXZ model.
Tensor network methods are a conceptually elegant framework for encoding complicated datasets, where high-order tensors are approximated as networks of low-order tensors. In practice, however, the numeric implementation of tensor network algorithms is often a labor-intensive and error-prone task, even for experienced researchers in this area. \emph{TensorTrace} is application designed to alleviate the burden of contracting tensor networks: it provides a graphic drawing interface specifically tailored for the construction of tensor network diagrams, from which the code for their optimal contrac…
We present several results relating to the contraction of generic tensor networks and discuss their application to the simulation of quantum many-body systems using variational approaches based upon tensor network states. Given a closed tensor network $\mathcal{T}$, we prove that if the environment of a single tensor from the network can be evaluated with computational cost $κ$, then the environment of any other tensor from $\mathcal{T}$ can be evaluated with identical cost $κ$. Moreover, we describe how the set of all single tensor environments from $\mathcal{T}$ can be simultaneously evaluat…
We characterize the variational power of quantum circuit tensor networks in the representation of physical many-body ground-states. Such tensor networks are formed by replacing the dense block unitaries and isometries in standard tensor networks by local quantum circuits. We explore both quantum circuit matrix product states and the quantum circuit multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz, and introduce an adaptive method to optimize the resulting circuits to high fidelity with more than $10^4$ parameters. We benchmark their expressiveness against standard tensor networks, as well as ot…
The tensor network variety is a variety of tensors associated to a graph and a set of positive integer weights on its edges, called bond dimensions. We determine an upper bound on the dimension of the tensor network variety. A refined upper bound is given in cases relevant for applications such as varieties of matrix product states and projected entangled pairs states. We provide a range (the "supercritical range") of the parameters where the upper bound is sharp.
The AdS/CFT correspondence conjectures a holographic duality between gravity in a bulk space and a critical quantum field theory on its boundary. Tensor networks have come to provide toy models to understand such bulk-boundary correspondences, shedding light on connections between geometry and entanglement. We introduce a versatile and efficient framework for studying tensor networks, extending previous tools for Gaussian matchgate tensors in 1+1 dimensions. Using regular bulk tilings, we show that the critical Ising theory can be realized on the boundary of both flat and hyperbolic bulk latti…
We demonstrate that perturbative expansions for quantum many-body systems can be rephrased in terms of tensor networks, thereby providing a natural framework for interpolating perturbative expansions across a quantum phase transition. This approach leads to classes of tensor-network states parametrized by few parameters with a clear physical meaning, while still providing excellent variational energies. We also demonstrate how to construct perturbative expansions of the entanglement Hamiltonian, whose eigenvalues form the entanglement spectrum, and how the tensor-network approach gives rise to…
We examine the use of weight enumerators for analyzing tensor network constructions, and specifically the quantum lego framework recently introduced. We extend the notion of quantum weight enumerators to so-called tensor enumerators, and prove that the trace operation on tensor networks is compatible with a trace operation on tensor enumerators. This allows us to compute quantum weight enumerators of larger codes such as the ones constructed through tensor network methods more efficiently. We also provide a general framework for quantum MacWilliams identities that includes tensor enumerators a…
This paper accompanies with our recent work on quantum error correction (QEC) and entanglement spectrum (ES) in tensor networks (arXiv:1806.05007). We propose a general framework for planar tensor network state with tensor constraints as a model for $AdS_3/CFT_2$ correspondence, which could be viewed as a generalization of hyperinvariant tensor networks recently proposed by Evenbly. We elaborate our proposal on tensor chains in a tensor network by tiling $H^2$ space and provide a diagrammatical description for general multi-tensor constraints in terms of tensor chains, which forms a generalize…
Tensor networks have demonstrated significant value for machine learning in a myriad of different applications. However, optimizing tensor networks using standard gradient descent has proven to be difficult in practice. Tensor networks suffer from initialization problems resulting in exploding or vanishing gradients and require extensive hyperparameter tuning. Efforts to overcome these problems usually depend on specific network architectures, or ad hoc prescriptions. In this paper we address the problems of initialization and hyperparameter tuning, making it possible to train tensor networks …
This $Physics$ viewpoint considers recent work by Tilloy and Cirac [Phys. Rev. X 9, 021040 (2019), arXiv:1808.00976]; those authors overcame several past limitations in the generalization of tensor networks to the continuum and proposed a new class of continuous tensor network states (cMPS) which apply to spatial dimensions of two and higher.
A fundamental process in the implementation of any numerical tensor network algorithm is that of contracting a tensor network. In this process, a network made up of multiple tensors connected by summed indices is reduced to a single tensor or a number by evaluating the index sums. This article presents a MATLAB function ncon(), or "Network CONtractor", which accepts as its input a tensor network and a contraction sequence describing how this network may be reduced to a single tensor or number. As its output it returns that single tensor or number. The function ncon() may be obtained by downloa…
In the tensor-network framework, the expectation values of two-dimensional quantum states are evaluated by contracting a double-layer tensor network constructed from initial and final tensor-network states. The computational cost of carrying out this contraction is generally very high, which limits the largest bond dimension of tensor-network states that can be accurately studied to a relatively small value. We propose an optimized contraction scheme to solve this problem by mapping the double-layer tensor network onto an intersected single-layer tensor network. This reduces greatly the bond d…
We propose a restricted class of tensor network state, built from number-state preserving tensors, for supervised learning tasks. This class of tensor network is argued to be a natural choice for classifiers as (i) they map classical data to classical data, and thus preserve the interpretability of data under tensor transformations, (ii) they can be efficiently trained to maximize their scalar product against classical data sets, and (iii) they seem to be as powerful as generic (unrestricted) tensor networks in this task. Our proposal is demonstrated using a variety of benchmark classification…

A tensor network is a type of decomposition used to express and approximate large arrays of data. A given data-set, quantum state or higher dimensional multi-linear map is factored and approximated by a composition of smaller multi-linear maps. This is reminiscent to how a Boolean function might be decomposed into a gate array: this represents a special case of tensor decomposition, in which the tensor entries are replaced by 0, 1 and the factorisation becomes exact. The collection of associated techniques are called, tensor network methods: the subject developed independently in several disti…
Tensor network states provide successful descriptions of strongly correlated quantum systems with applications ranging from condensed matter physics to cosmology. Any family of tensor network states possesses an underlying entanglement structure given by a graph of maximally entangled states along the edges that identify the indices of the tensors to be contracted. Recently, more general tensor networks have been considered, where the maximally entangled states on edges are replaced by multipartite entangled states on plaquettes. Both the structure of the underlying graph and the dimensionalit…
We present a general procedure for constructing tensor networks that accurately reproduce holographic states in conformal field theories (CFTs). Given a state in a large-$N$ CFT with a static, semiclassical gravitational dual, we build a tensor network by an iterative series of approximations that eliminate redundant degrees of freedom and minimize the bond dimensions of the resulting network. We argue that the bond dimensions of the tensor network will match the areas of the corresponding bulk surfaces. For 'tree' tensor networks (i.e., those that are constructed by discretizing spacetime wit…
We discuss the variational optimization of a unitary tensor-network circuit with different network structures. The ansatz is performed based on a generalization of well-developed multi-scale entanglement renormalization algorithm and also the conjugate-gradient method with an effective line search. We present the benchmarking calculations for different network structures by studying the Heisenberg model in a strongly disordered magnetic field and a tensor-network $QR$-decomposition.
Techniques for approximately contracting tensor networks are limited in how efficiently they can make use of parallel computing resources. In this work we demonstrate and characterize a Monte Carlo approach to the tensor network renormalization group method which can be used straightforwardly on modern computing architectures. We demonstrate the efficiency of the technique and show that Monte Carlo tensor network renormalization provides an attractive path to improving the accuracy of a wide class of challenging computations while also providing useful estimates of uncertainty and a statistica…
Gauged gaussian Projected Entangled Pair States are particular tensor network constructions that describe lattice states of fermionic matter interacting with dynamical gauge fields. We show how one can efficiently compute, using Monte-Carlo techniques, expectation values of physical observables in that class of states. This opens up the possibility of using tensor network techniques to investigate lattice gauge theories in two and three spatial dimensions.
In this article we show the duality between tensor networks and undirected graphical models with discrete variables. We study tensor networks on hypergraphs, which we call tensor hypernetworks. We show that the tensor hypernetwork on a hypergraph exactly corresponds to the graphical model given by the dual hypergraph. We translate various notions under duality. For example, marginalization in a graphical model is dual to contraction in the tensor network. Algorithms also translate under duality. We show that belief propagation corresponds to a known algorithm for tensor network contraction. Th…
