We review known and discuss new signatures of high-intensity Compton scattering assuming a scenario where a high-power laser is brought into collision with an electron beam. At high intensities one expects to see a substantial red-shift of the usual kinematic Compton edge of the photon spectrum caused by the large, intensity dependent, effective mass of the electrons within the laser beam. Emission rates acquire their global maximum at this edge while neighbouring smaller peaks signal higher harmonics. In addition, we find that the notion of the centre-of-mass frame for a given harmonic becomes intensity dependent. Tuning the intensity then effectively amounts to changing the frame of reference, going continuously from inverse to ordinary Compton scattering with the centre-of-mass kinematics defining the transition point between the two.
The spectrally resolved differential cross section of Compton scattering, $d σ/ d ω' \vert_{ω' = const}$, rises from small towards larger laser intensity parameter $ξ$, reaches a maximum, and falls towards the asymptotic strong-field region. Expressed by invariant quantities: $d σ/du \vert_{u = const}$ rises from small towards larger values of $ξ$, reaches a maximum at $ξ_{max} = \frac49 {\cal K} u m^2 / k \cdot p$, ${\cal K} = {\cal O} (1)$, and falls at $ξ> ξ_{max}$ like $\propto ξ^{-3/2} \exp \left (- \frac{2 u m^2}{3 ξ\, k \cdot p} \right )$ at $u \ge 1$. [The quantity $u$ is the Ritus var…
The probabilities of various elementary laser - photon - electron/positron interactions display in selected phase space and parameter regions typical non-perturbative dependencies such as $\propto {\cal P} \exp\{- a E_{crit} /E\}$, where ${\cal P}$ is a pre-exponential factor, $E_{crit}$ denotes the critical Sauter-Schwinger field strength, and $E$ characterizes the (laser) field strength. While the Schwinger process with $a = a_S \equiv π$ and the non-linear Breit-Wheeler process in the tunneling regime with $a = a_{n \ell BW} \equiv 4 m / 3 ω'$ (with $ω'$ the probe photon energy and $m$ the …
Non-linear Compton scattering of ultra-relativistic electrons traversing high-intensity laser pulses generates also hard photons. These photon high-energy tails are considered for parameters in reach at the forthcoming experiments LUXE and E-320. We consider the invariant differential cross sections $d σ/ du$ between the IR and UV regions and analyze the impact of the laser polarization and find q-deformed exponential shapes. (The variable $u$ is the light-cone momentum-transfer from initial electron to final photon.) Optical laser pulses of various durations are compared with the monochromati…
QED perturbation theory in a background field has been conjectured to break down for sufficiently high field intensity. The high-intensity behavior of a field theory is however intertwined with its high-energy (UV) behavior. Here we show that a UV modification of QED changes the high-intensity behaviour of observables. Specifically we study non-linear Compton scattering in a constant crossed field in QED with an additional Pauli term. In the UV modified theory the cross section exhibits a faster power-law scaling with intensity than in ordinary QED.
