We demonstrate that the nontrivial dispersion of a plasma driven by a high-intensity laser pulse qualitatively affects fundamental nonperturbative QED processes triggered by the laser pulse even in the case that no electrons remain in the interaction volume, e.g., due to ponderomotive expulsion. In the electron-free case this plasma effect is mediated by the response current of the residual ions as a dispersive effect on the laser propagation. The residual ions hence act as an effective background to the propagating electromagnetic laser field. We demonstrate that this has an impact on the fundamental nonlinear QED process of photon emission by an electron upon absorption of a large number of laser photons, called nonlinear Compton scattering. In two exemplary cases we find the ion plasma to suppress and enhance the photon emission rate by approximately $10\%$ for an intermediate and high laser intensity, respectively. The latter enhancement has no classical analog.
Laser pulses traveling through a plasma can feature group velocities significantly differing from the speed of light in vacuum. This modifies the well-known Volkov states of an electron inside a strong laser-field from the vacuum case and consequently all quantum electrodynamical effects triggered by the electron. Here we present an in-depth study of the basic process of photon emission by an electron scattered from an intense short laser pulse inside a plasma, labeled nonlinear Compton scattering, based on modified Volkov solutions derived from first principles. Consequences of the nonlinear,…
The recoil associated with photon emission is key to the dynamics of ultrarelativistic electrons in strong electromagnetic fields, as are found in high-intensity laser-matter interactions and astrophysical environments such as neutron star magnetospheres. When the energy of the photon becomes comparable to that of the electron, it is necessary to use quantum electrodynamics (QED) to describe the dynamics accurately. However, computing the appropriate scattering matrix element from strong-field QED is not generally possible due to multiparticle effects and the complex structure of the electroma…

The locally constant field approximation (LCFA) has to date underpinned the numerical simulation of quantum processes in laser-plasma physics and astrophysics, but its validity has recently been questioned in the parameter regime of current laser experiments. While improvements are needed, literature corrections to the LCFA show inherent problems. Using nonlinear Compton scattering in laser fields to illustrate, we show here how to overcome the problems in LCFA corrections. We derive an "LCFA+" which, comparing with the full QED result, shows an improvement over the LCFA across the whole photo…
Photon bursts with a wavelength smaller than the plasma inter-particle distance can drive plasma wakes via Compton scattering. We investigate this fundamental process analytically and numerically for different photon frequencies, photon flux, and plasma magnetization. Our results show that Langmuir and extraordinary modes are driven efficiently when the photon energy density lies above a certain threshold. The interaction of photon bursts with magnetized plasmas is of distinguished interest as the generated extraordinary modes can convert into pure electromagnetic waves at the plasma/vacuum bo…
We present a generalization of Vlasov-Maxwell kinetic theory that accounts for intense electromagnetic fields. A strongly-radiating, possibly optically-thick plasma is decomposed into fragments, each comprising a charged particle together with its self-generated electromagnetic field. Assuming weak inter-fragment correlations, but strong intra-fragment correlations, a mean-field evolution equation for the single-fragment distribution functional is derived. We also identify the equation's Hamiltonian formulation. By incorporating strong correlations between a charged particle and the field it g…
A semi-classical approach is used to calculate radiation emission in the collision of an electron with an intense focused laser pulse. The results are compared to predictions from the locally constant field and locally monochromatic approximations. It is found that simulations employing the semi-classical approach capture features in the energy spectra, such as subharmonics and bandwidth structure, which are beyond local approaches. The formation length is introduced as a diagnostic to select between approaches as the electron is propagated through the pulse.
We derive an approximation to QED effects in strong background fields which can be employed to improve numerical simulations of laser-particle collisions. Treating the laser as a plane wave of arbitrary intensity, we split the wave into fast (carrier) and slow (envelope) modes. We solve the interaction dynamics exactly for the former while performing a local expansion in the latter. This yields a `locally monochromatic' approximation (LMA), which we compare with exact spectra for nonlinear Compton scattering and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production, for realistic laser pulse durations. We s…
The recent advancement of high-intensity lasers has made all-optical Compton scattering become a promising way to produce ultra-short brilliant $γ$-rays in an ultra-compact system. However, so far achieved Compton $γ$-ray sources are severely limited by low conversion efficiency (lower than $10^{-5}$) and spectral intensity ($\sim10^{4}$ ${\rm photons/0.1\%BW}$). Here we present a highly efficient gamma photon emitter obtained by irradiating a high-intensity laser pulse on a miniature plasma device consisting of a plasma lens and a plasma mirror. This concept exploits strong spatiotemporal las…
The mechanism of laser-driven relativistic pair-jet production qualitatively changes as laser intensity exceeds $I\gtrsim5\times10^{22}$ W/cm$^{2}$ because of the appearance of laser-induced strong-field QED processes. Here, we show that by exceeding this intensity additional physics operates and opens a new and efficient channel to convert laser photons into dense pair-jets -- the combination of nonlinear Compton scattering and the Bethe-Heitler process. This channel generates relativistic electron-positron jets more than three orders of magnitude denser than has so far been possible. We find…
Emission of high energy gamma rays via the non-linear inverse Compton scattering process (ICS) in interactions of ultra-intense laser pulses with thin solid foils is studied using particle-in-cell simulations. It is shown that the angular distribution of the ICS photons has a forward-oriented two-directional structure centred at an angle $\vartheta = \pm 30^\circ$, a value predicted by a theoretical model based on a standing wave approximation to the electromagnetic field in front of the target, which only increases at the highest intensities due to faster hole boring, which renders the approx…
Induced Compton scattering (ICS) is a nonlinear interaction between intense electromagnetic radiation and a rarefied plasma. Although the magnetosphere of pulsars is a potential cite at which ICS occurs in nature, the ICS signatures have not been discovered so far. One of the reasons for non-detection of the ICS signatures is that we still do not attain the concrete understanding of such nonlinear plasma interactions because of their nonlinear nature and of the lack of experimental confirmations. Here, we propose a possible approach to understand ICS experimentally in laboratories, especially,…
High energy photons can be generated via inverse Compton scattering (ICS) in the collision between energetic electrons and intense laser pulse. The development of laser plasma accelerators promises compact and all-optical gamma-ray sources by colliding the electrons from laser wakefield accelerators to its high-power driving pulse reflected by a plasma mirror. However, the law of optical focusing hinders realization of both high photon yield and monochromatic spectrum in this scenario. We propose an azimuthal spatial-temporal convertor that decouples the focal field strength from laser spot si…
Although several laser-plasma-based methods have been proposed for generating energetic electrons, positrons and γ-photons, manipulation of their microstructures is still challenging, and their angular momentum control has not yet been achieved. Here, we present and numerically demonstrate an all-optical scheme to generate bright GeV γ-photon and positron beams with controllable angular momentum by use of two counter-propagating circularly-polarized lasers in a near-critical-density plasma. The plasma acts as a "switching medium", where the trapped electrons first obtain angular momentum from …
We propose a self-consistent model which utilizes the polarization vector to theoretically describe the evolution of spin polarization of relativistic electrons in an intense electromagnetic field. The variation of radiative polarization due to instantaneous no photon emission is introduced into our model, which extends the applicability of the polarization vector model derived from the nonlinear Compton scattering under local constant crossed-field approximation to the complex electromagnetic environment in laser plasma interaction. According to this model, we develop a Monte Carlo method to …
The interaction between an ultrastrong laser and a cone-like target is an efficient approach to generate high power radiations like attosecond pulses and terahertz waves. The object is to study the $γ$-ray generation under this configuration with the help of 2D particle-in-cell simulations. It is deciphered that electrons experience three stages including injection, acceleration and scattering to emit high energy photons via nonlinear compton scattering (NCS). These spatial-separated attosecond $γ$-ray pulses own high peak brilliance ($>10^{22}$ photons/($\rm s\cdot\rm mm^2\cdot\rm mrad^2\cdot…
The dynamics of energetic particles in strong electromagnetic fields can be heavily influenced by the energy loss arising from the emission of radiation during acceleration, known as radiation reaction. When interacting with a high-energy electron beam, today's lasers are sufficiently intense to explore the transition between the classical and quantum radiation reaction regimes. We report on the observation of radiation reaction in the collision of an ultra-relativistic electron beam generated by laser wakefield acceleration ($\varepsilon > 500$ MeV) with an intense laser pulse ($a_0 > 10$).
Scattering relativistic electrons with optical lasers can result in a significant frequency upshift for the photons, potentially producing $γ$-rays. This is what linear Compton scattering taught us. Ultra-intense lasers offer nowadays a new paradigm where multi-photon absorption effects come into play. These effects can result in higher harmonics, higher yields and also electron-positron pairs. This article intends to discriminate the different laser scenarios that have been proposed over the past years as well as to give scaling laws for future experiments. The energy conversion from laser or…
In this paper we study photon emission in the interaction of the laser beam with an under-dense target and the attached reflecting plasma mirror. Photons are emitted due to the inverse Compton scattering when accelerated electrons interact with a reflected part of the laser pulse. The enhancement of photon generation in this configuration lies in using the laser pulse with a steep rising edge. Such a laser pulse can be obtained by the preceding interaction of the incoming laser pulse with a thin solid-density foil. Using numerical simulations we study the origin of such a laser pulse and its e…
The emission of multi-MeV ($γ$-ray) photons from the interaction of a high-powered laser pulse with a dense plasma target is studied using particle-in-cell simulations. A new set of diagnostic techniques is presented and applied to analyze the intense field and ultra-relativistic electrons. Such methods elucidate the dominant processes responsible for efficient laser-to-$γ$ energy conversion, which include nonlinear Compton scattering and magneto-bremsstrahlung radiation, and provide a clear picture of the interaction on a microscopic level. We identify regions in the plasma target of high pho…
