A semi-classical description of the intrinsic spin-Hall effect (SHE) is presented which is relevant for a wide class of systems. A heuristic model for the SHE is developed, starting with a fully quantum mechanical treatment, from which we construct an intuitive expression for the spin-Hall current and conductivity. Our method makes transparent the physical mechanism which drives the effect, and unifies the SHE across several spintronic and optical systems. Finally, we propose an analogous effect in bilayer graphene.
Generating spintronic devices has been a goal for the nano-science. We have used density function theory to determine magnetic phases of single layer and bilayer lithium doped graphene nanoflakes. We have introduced graphene flakes as single molecular magnets, spin on/off switches and spintronic memory devices. To aim this goal, adsorption energies, spin polarizations, electronic gaps, magnetic properties and robustness of spin-polarized states have been studied in the presence of dopants and second layers. We find that for bilayer SMMs with two layers of different sizes the highest occupied m…
Thanks to its intrinsic ability to preserve spin coherence, graphene is a prime material for spintronics. In this review article, we summarize recent achievements related to spintronics in graphene quantum dots and motivate this field from a spintronics and a materials science point of view. We focus on theory but also discuss recent experiments. The main sources of spin decoherence are interactions with lattice excitations and the hyperfine interaction with present nuclear spins. We explain effective spin-phonon coupling in detail and present a generic power law for the spin relaxation time T…
We show how the magnetization of nano-objects can be efficiently regulated. Several types of nanosystems are considered: magnetics nanomolecules, magnetic nanoclusters, polarized nanomolecules, and magnetic graphene. These nano-objects and the structures composed of them enjoy many common properties, with the main difference being in the type of particle interactions. The possibility of governing spin dynamics is important for spintronics.
Zigzag edges of the honeycomb structure of graphene exhibit magnetic polarization making them attractive as building blocks for spintronic devices. Here, we show that devices with zigzag edged triangular antidots perform essential spintronic functionalities, such as spatial spin-splitting or spin filtering of unpolarized incoming currents. Near-perfect performance can be obtained with optimized structures. The device performance is robust against substantial disorder. The gate-voltage dependence of transverse resistance is qualitatively different for spin-polarized and spin-unpolarized devices…
The lack of some spatial symmetries in planar devices with Rashba spin-orbit interaction opens the possibility of producing spin polarized electrical currents in absence of external magnetic field or magnetic impurities. We study how the direction of the spin polarization of the current is related to spatial symmetries of the device. As an example of these relations we study numerically the spin-resolved current in graphene nanoribbons. Different configurations are explored and analyzed to demonstrate that graphene nanoflakes may be used as excellent spintronic devices in an all-electrical set…
Spin Hall effects interconvert spin- and charge currents due to spin-orbit interaction, which enables convenient electrical generation and detection of diffusive spin currents and even collective spin excitations in magnetic solids. Here, we review recent experimental efforts exploring efficient spin Hall detector materials as well as new approaches to drive collective magnetization dynamics and to manipulate spin textures by spin Hall effects. These studies are also expected to impact practical spintronics applications beyond their significance in fundamental research.
Compared to monolayer graphene, electrons in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) have an additional layer degree of freedom, offering a platform for developing {\it layered spintronics} with the help of proximity-induced magnetism. Based on an effective phenomenological model, we systematically study the effect of this magnetism on the spin-dependent band structure near the Fermi energy and identify the magnetic phases induced in BLG by proximity with magnets. We show that spin polarization can develop in BLG due to this proximity effect. This spin polarization depends strongly on the layer …

Here we review the experimental and theoretical state-of-art concerning spin injection and transport, defect-induced magnetic moments, spin-orbit coupling and spin relaxation in graphene. Future research in graphene spintronics will need to address the development of applications such as spin transistors and spin logic devices, as well as exotic physical properties including topological states and proximity-induced phenomena…
We consider twisted bilayer and trilayer graphene in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and explore the physics of Moiré spintronics. The electronic charge density has a sharp step right at the magic angles $θ_m$. As a result, local spin observables (polarization and equilibrium spin currents) have sharp peaks (of width about a small fraction of 1$^\circ$) as a function of the twist angle $θ$, and abrupt sign reversals at $θ_m$. Thereby, the magic angle can be determined in an unprecedented accuracy. In the first chiral limit, the spin currents vanish, but the peculiar pattern of the p…
We propose an interband tunneling picture to explain and predict the interlayer twist angle dependence of the induced spin-orbit coupling in heterostructures of graphene and monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). We obtain a compact analytic formula for the induced valley Zeeman and Rashba spin-orbit coupling in terms of the TMDC band structure parameters and interlayer tunneling matrix elements. We parametrize the tunneling matrix elements with few parameters, which in our formalism are independent of the twist angle between the layers. We estimate the value of the tunneling para…
Because of its fascinating electronic properties, graphene is expected to produce breakthroughs in many areas of nanoelectronics. For spintronics, its key advantage is the expected long spin lifetime, combined with its large electron velocity. In this article, we review recent theoretical and experimental results showing that graphene could be the long-awaited platform for spintronics. A critical parameter for both characterization and devices is the resistance of the contact between the electrodes and the graphene, which must be large enough to prevent quenching of the induced spin polarizati…
Spintronics involves the study of active control and manipulation of spin degrees of freedom in solid-state systems. The fascinating spin-resolved properties of graphene motivate numerous researchers into the studies of spintronics in graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials. Silicene, silicon analog of graphene, is considered as a promising material for spintronics. Here, we present a review on the theoretical advances about the spin-dependent properties including the electric field and exchange field tunable topological properties of silicene and the corresponding spintronic device …
We report on graphene-passivated ferromagnetic electrodes (GPFE) for spin devices. GPFE are shown to act as spin-polarized oxidation-resistant electrodes. The direct coating of nickel with few layer graphene through a readily scalable chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process allows the preservation of an unoxidized nickel surface upon air exposure. Fabrication and measurement of complete reference tunneling spin valve structures demonstrates that the GPFE is maintained as a spin polarizer and also that the presence of the graphene coating leads to a specific sign reversal of the magneto-resist…
After the first unequivocal demonstration of spin transport in graphene (Tombros et al., 2007), surprisingly at room temperature, it was quickly realized that this novel material was relevant for both fundamental spintronics and future applications. Over the decade since, exciting results have made the field of graphene spintronics blossom, and a second generation of studies has extended to new two-dimensional (2D) compounds. This Colloquium reviews recent theoretical and experimental advances on electronic spin transport in graphene and related 2D materials, focusing on emergent phenomena in …
In this thesis, I propose a practical way to stabilize half passivated graphene (graphone). I show that the dipole moments induced by a hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) substrate on graphene stabilize the hydrogen atoms on one sublattice of the graphene layer and suppress the migration of the adsorbed hydrogen atoms. I also present the substrate effect of h-BN that reduces distortion induced by fluorination of graphene and stabilizes half-passivated graphene in a single sublattice. Then using spin-polarized density functional calculations I investigate magnetic properties of graphone. I show the…
The conductivity of the system magnetic dielectric (EuO) - graphene channel - ferroelectric substrate was considered. The magnetic dielectric locally transforms the band spectrum of graphene by inducing an energy gap in it and making it spin-asymmetric with respect to the free electrons. The range of spontaneous polarization (2- 5)mC/m2 that can be easily realized in thin films of proper and incipient ferroelectrics, was under examination. It was demonstrated, that if the Fermi level in the graphene channel belongs to energy intervals where the graphene band spectrum, modified by EuO, becomes …
It is proposed that the new generation of spintronics should be ideally massless and dissipationless for the realization of ultra-fast and ultra-low-power spintronic devices. We demonstrate that the spin-gapless materials with linear energy dispersion are unique materials that can realize these massless and dissipationless states. Furthermore, we propose four new types of spin Hall effects which consist of spin accumulation of equal numbers of electrons and holes having the same or opposite spin polarization at the sample edge in Hall effect measurements, but with vanishing Hall voltage. These…
Quantum spin Hall effect was first predicted in graphene. However, the weak spin orbit interaction in graphene meant that the search for quantum spin Hall effect in graphene never fructified. In this work we show how to generate the quantum spin-valley Hall effect in graphene via quantum pumping by adiabatically modulating a magnetic impurity and an electrostatic potential in a monolayer of strained graphene. We see that not only exclusive spin polarized currents can be pumped in the two valleys in exactly opposite directions but one can have pure spin currents flowing in opposite directions i…
Long-distance spin transport through anti-ferromagnetic insulators (AFMIs) is a long-standing goal of spintronics research. Unlike conventional spintronics systems, monolayer graphene in quantum Hall regime (QH) offers an unprecedented tuneability of spin-polarization and charge carrier density in QH edge states. Here, using gate-controlled QH edges as spin-dependent injectors and detectors in an all-graphene electrical circuit, for the first time we demonstrate a selective tuning of ambipolar spin transport through graphene $ν$=0 AFMIs. By modulating polarities of the excitation bias, magneti…
We examine the possibility of using graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with directly substituted chromium atoms as spintronic device. Using density functional theory, we simulate a voltage bias across a constructed GNR in a device setup, where a magnetic dimer has been substituted into the lattice. Through this first principles approach, we calculate the electronic and magnetic properties as a function of Hubbard U, voltage, and magnetic configuration. By calculating of the total energy of each magnetic configuration, we determine that initial antiferromagnetic ground state flips to a ferromagnetic s…
One of the most distinctive features of graphene is its huge inter-Landau-level splitting in experimentally attainable magnetic fields which results in the room-temperature quantum Hall effect. In this paper we calculate the longitudinal conductivity induced by two-phonon scattering in graphene in a quantizing magnetic field at elevated temperatures. It is concluded that the purely phonon-induced scattering, negligible for conventional semiconductor heterostructures under quantum Hall conditions, becomes comparable to the disorder-induced contribution to the dissipative conductivity of graphen…
We demonstrate the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in single-layer graphene exchange-coupled to an atomically flat yttrium iron garnet (YIG) ferromagnetic thin film. The anomalous Hall conductance has magnitude of ~0.09(2e2/h) at low temperatures and is measurable up to ~ 300 K. Our observations indicate not only proximity-induced ferromagnetism in graphene/YIG with large exchange interaction, but also enhanced spin-orbit coupling which is believed to be inherently weak in ideal graphene. The proximity-induced ferromagnetic order in graphene can lead to novel transport phenomena such as the quanti…
Graphene - transition metal phthalocyanine (G-MPc) hybrid systems constitute promising platforms for densely-packed single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Here, we selected iron(II) phthalocyanine (FePc) and investigated its interaction with pristine and defective graphene layers employing density functional theory. Our calculations indicate that thorough proper dehydrogenation of the benzol rings in the FePc molecule its adsorption to graphene is thermodynamically favorable. In general, the presence of anchoring sites on the graphene layer, i.e. point defects, additionally facilitates the adsorption…
The quantum Hall effect is the seminal example of topological protection, as charge carriers are transmitted through one-dimensional edge channels where backscattering is prohibited. Graphene has made its marks as an exceptional platform to reveal new facets of this remarkable property. However, in conventional Hall bar geometries, topological protection of graphene edge channels is found regrettably less robust than in high mobility semi-conductors. Here, we explore graphene quantum Hall regime at the local scale, using a scanning gate microscope. We reveal the detrimental influence of antido…
Spin, anomalous, and valley Hall effects in graphene-based hybrid structures are studied theoretically within the Green function formalism and linear response theory. Two different types of hybrid systems are considered in detail: (i) graphene/boron nitride/cobalt(nickel), and (ii) graphene/YIG. The main interest is focused on the proximity-induced exchange interaction between graphene and magnetic substrate and on the proximity-enhanced spin-orbit coupling. The proximity effects are shown to have a significant influence on the electronic and spin transport properties of graphene. To find the …
We report on the formation of critical states in disordered graphene, at the origin of variable and unconventional transport properties in the quantum Hall regime, such as a zero-energy Hall conductance plateau in the absence of an energy bandgap and Landau level degeneracy breaking. By using efficient real-space transport methodologies, we compute both the dissipative and Hall conductivities of large size graphene sheets with random distribution of model single and double vacancies. By analyzing the scaling of transport coefficients with defect density, system size and magnetic length, we elu…

We obtain an analytical expression for the Hall conductivity in AAA-stacked trilayer graphene (TLG) within the linear response Kubo formalism. Interestingly, we find that the quantization of the Hall conductivity is severely dependent on the value of the chemical potential and the magnetic field. The origin of this unusual quantization, attributed to the Landau level spectrum of AAA-stacked TLG, is explained in detail. We show that is a characteristic of the multilayer graphene structures with AA stacking order.
Within the field of spintronics major efforts are directed towards developing applications for spin-based transport devices made fully out of two-dimensional (2D) materials. In this work we present an experimental realization of a spin-valve device where the generation of the spin signal is exclusively attributed to the spin-dependent conductivity of the magnetic graphene resulting from the proximity of an interlayer antiferromagnet, CrSBr. We clearly demonstrate that the usage of the conventional 3D magnetic contacts, that are commonly air-sensitive and incompatible with practical technologie…
Realization of the quantum-spin-Hall effect in graphene devices has remained an outstanding challenge dating back to the inception of the field of topological insulators. Graphene's exceptionally weak spin-orbit coupling -stemming from carbon's low mass- poses the primary obstacle. We experimentally and theoretically study artificially enhanced spin-orbit coupling in graphene via random decoration with dilute Bi2Te3 nanoparticles. Remarkably, multi-terminal resistance measurements suggest the presence of helical edge states characteristic of a quantum-spin-Hall phase; the magnetic-field and te…
We develop a theory of the valley Hall effect in high-quality graphene samples, in which strain fluctuation-induced random gauge potentials have been suggested as the dominant source of disorder. We find a near-quantized value of valley Hall conductivity in the band transport regime, which originates from an enhanced side jump of a Dirac electron when it scatters off the gauge potential. By assuming a small residue charge density our theory reproduces qualitatively the temperature- and gap-dependence of the observed valley Hall effect at the charge neutral point. Our study suggests that the va…
Quantum anomalous Hall state is expected to emerge in Dirac electron systems such as graphene under both sufficiently strong exchange and spin-orbit interactions. In pristine graphene, neither interaction exists; however, both interactions can be acquired by coupling graphene to a magnetic insulator (MI) as revealed by the anomalous Hall effect. Here, we show enhanced magnetic proximity coupling by sandwiching graphene between a ferrimagnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet (YIG) and hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) which also serves as a top gate dielectric. By sweeping the top-gate voltage, we o…
We report an intriguing transition from the quantum spin Hall phase to the spin Hall effect upon segregation of thallium adatoms adsorbed onto a graphene surface. Landauer-Büttiker and Kubo-Greenwood simulations are used to access both edge and bulk transport physics in disordered thallium-functionalized graphene systems of realistic sizes. Our findings not only quantify the detrimental effects of adatom clustering in the formation of the topological state, but also provide evidence for the emergence of spin accumulation at opposite sample edges driven by spin-dependent scattering induced by t…
