Cloud computing focuses on delivery of reliable, secure, fault-tolerant, sustainable, and scalable infrastructures for hosting Internet-based application services. These applications have different composition, configuration, and deployment requirements. Quantifying the performance of scheduling and allocation policy on a Cloud infrastructure (hardware, software, services) for different application and service models under varying load, energy performance (power consumption, heat dissipation), and system size is an extremely challenging problem to tackle. To simplify this process, in this paper we propose CloudSim: a new generalized and extensible simulation framework that enables seamless modelling, simulation, and experimentation of emerging Cloud computing infrastructures and management services. The simulation framework has the following novel features: (i) support for modelling and instantiation of large scale Cloud computing infrastructure, including data centers on a single physical computing node and java virtual machine; (ii) a self-contained platform for modelling data centers, service brokers, scheduling, and allocations policies; (iii) availability of virtualization engine, which aids in creation and management of multiple, independent, and co-hosted virtualized services on a data center node; and (iv) flexibility to switch between space-shared and time-shared allocation of processing cores to virtualized services.
Cloud computing aims to power the next generation data centers and enables application service providers to lease data center capabilities for deploying applications depending on user QoS (Quality of Service) requirements. Cloud applications have different composition, configuration, and deployment requirements. Quantifying the performance of resource allocation policies and application scheduling algorithms at finer details in Cloud computing environments for different application and service models under varying load, energy performance (power consumption, heat dissipation), and system size …
As we know that Cloud Computing is a new paradigm in IT. It has many advantages and disadvantages. But in future it will spread in the whole world. Many researches are going on for securing the cloud services. Simulation is the act of imitating or pretending. It is a situation in which a particular set of condition is created artificially in order to study that could exit in reality. We need only a simple Operating System with some memory to startup our Computer. All our resources will be available in the cloud.
As the use of cloud computing continues to rise, controlling cost becomes increasingly important. Yet there is evidence that 30\% - 45\% of cloud spend is wasted. Existing tools for cloud provisioning typically rely on highly trained human experts to specify what to monitor, thresholds for triggering action, and actions. In this paper we explore the use of reinforcement learning (RL) to acquire policies to balance performance and spend, allowing humans to specify what they want as opposed to how to do it, minimizing the need for cloud expertise. Empirical results with tabular, deep, and duelin…
This paper proposes a novel simulator IoTSim-Edge, which captures the behavior of heterogeneous IoT and edge computing infrastructure and allows users to test their infrastructure and framework in an easy and configurable manner. IoTSim-Edge extends the capability of CloudSim to incorporate the different features of edge and IoT devices. The effectiveness of IoTSim-Edge is described using three test cases. The results show the varying capability of IoTSim-Edge in terms of application composition, battery-oriented modeling, heterogeneous protocols modeling and mobility modeling along with the r…
Developing a software service requires a strict software development life cycle and process. This process demands controlling all application code through source control management as well as a rigorous versioning and branching strategy. However, the platform and infrastructure also benefit from this rigor. Software services must be deployed to a target run time environment and provisioning that environment through manual user actions is tedious and error-prone. Provisioning manually also becomes prohibitive as the number of resources grow and spread globally over multiple regions. The answer …
The new era of computing called Cloud Computing allows the user to access the cloud services dynamically over the Internet wherever and whenever needed. Cloud consists of data and resources; and the cloud services include the delivery of software, infrastructure, applications, and storage over the Internet based on user demand through Internet. In short, cloud computing is a business and economic model allowing the users to utilize high-end computing and storage virtually with minimal infrastructure on their end. Cloud has three service models namely, Cloud Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), Cloud …
Cloud computing is a style of computing in which dynamically scalable and other virtualized resources are provided as a service over the Internet. The energy consumption and makespan associated with the resources allocated should be taken into account. This paper proposes an improved clonal selection algorithm based on time cost and energy consumption models in cloud computing environment. We have analyzed the performance of our approach using the CloudSim toolkit. The experimental results show that our approach has immense potential as it offers significant improvement in the aspects of respo…
The Cloud infrastructure services landscape advances steadily leaving users in the agony of choice. As a result, Cloud service identification and discovery remains a hard problem due to different service descriptions, non standardised naming conventions and heterogeneous types and features of Cloud services. In this paper, we present an OWL based ontology, the Cloud Computing Ontology (CoCoOn) that defines functional and non functional concepts, attributes and relations of infrastructure services. We also present a system...
Service composition enables customizable services to be provided to the service consumers. Since the capabilities and the performances of mobile devices (e.g., smart phone, PDA, handheld media player) have improved, a mobile device can be utilized to interact with external mobile service providers towards providing composite Web service to remote clients. Existing approaches on mobile-hosted service composition are usually platform dependent, and rely on centralized infrastructure. Such approaches are not feasible in an open, mobile infrastructure-less environment, in which networked services …
Cloud computing has been developed as one of the prominent paradigm for providing on demand resources to the end user based on signed service level agreement and pay as use model. Cloud computing provides resources using multitenant architecture where infrastructure is generated from multiple or single geographical distributed cloud datacenters. Scheduling of cloud application requests to cloud infrastructure is one of the main research area in cloud computing. Researchers have developed many scheduling applications for which they have used different simulators available in the market such as …
Compute infrastructure hosted by a cloud provider allows an application to scale without limit. The application developer no longer needs to worry about the up-front investment in a server farm provisioned for a worst-case load scenario. However, managing cloud deployments requires a sophisticated framework that can autoscale the infrastructure and guarantee the up-time of running container images. This paper surveys existing research addressing the management and orchestration of cloud deployments as well as the modelling framework to abstract away the low-level details of the host infrastruc…
The stability and performance of Cloud platforms are essential as they directly impact customers' satisfaction. Cloud service providers use Cloud monitoring tools to ensure that rendered services match the quality of service requirements indicated in established contracts such as service-level agreements. Given the enormous number of resources that need to be monitored, highly scalable and capable monitoring tools are designed and implemented by Cloud service providers such as Amazon, Google, IBM, and Microsoft. Cloud monitoring tools monitor millions of virtual and physical resources and cont…
A fundamental ambition of grid and distributed systems is to be capable of sustaining evolution and allowing for adaptability ((F. Losavio et al., 2002), (S. Radhakrishnan, 2005)). Furthermore, as the complexity and sophistication of theses structures increases, so does the need for adaptability of each component. One of the primary benefits of service oriented architecture (SOA) is the ability to compose applications, processes or more complex services from other services which increases the capacity for adaptation. This document proposes a novel infrastructure composition model that aims at …
Enterprises are driving towards less cost, more availability, agility, managed risk - all of which is accelerated towards Cloud Computing. Cloud is not a particular product, but a way of delivering IT services that are consumable on demand, elastic to scale up and down as needed, and follow a pay-for-usage model. Out of the three common types of cloud computing service models, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is a service model that provides servers, computing power, network bandwidth and Storage capacity, as a service to their subscribers. Cloud can relate to many things but without the fun…
This paper presents results of the ongoing development of the Cloud Services Delivery Infrastructure (CSDI) that provides a basis for infrastructure centric cloud services provisioning, operation and management in multi-cloud multi-provider environment defined as a Zero Touch Provisioning, Operation and Management (ZTP/ZTPOM) model. The presented work refers to use cases from data intensive research that require high performance computation resources and large storage volumes that are typically distributed between datacenters often involving multiple cloud providers. Automation for large scale…
Cloud computing providers have setup several data centers at different geographical locations over the Internet in order to optimally serve needs of their customers around the world. However, existing systems do not support mechanisms and policies for dynamically coordinating load distribution among different Cloud-based data centers in order to determine optimal location for hosting application services to achieve reasonable QoS levels. Further, the Cloud computing providers are unable to predict geographic distribution of users consuming their services, hence the load coordination must happe…
The cloud computing model is rapidly transforming the IT landscape. Cloud computing is a new computing paradigm that delivers computing resources as a set of reliable and scalable internet-based services allowing customers to remotely run and manage these services. Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) is one of the popular cloud computing services. IaaS allows customers to increase their computing resources on the fly without investing in new hardware. IaaS adapts virtualization to enable on-demand access to a pool of virtual computing resources. Although there are great benefits to be gained fr…
Cloud computing is a technological advancement in the arena of computing and has taken the utility vision of computing a step further by providing computing resources such as network, storage, compute capacity and servers, as a service via an internet connection. These services are provided to the users in a pay per use manner subjected to the amount of usage of these resources by the cloud users. Since the usage of these resources is done in an elastic manner thus an on demand provisioning of these resources is the driving force behind the entire cloud computing infrastructure therefore the m…
Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) is the state-ofthe- art mobile computing technology aims to alleviate resource poverty of mobile devices. Recently, several approaches and techniques have been proposed to augment mobile devices by leveraging cloud computing. However, long-WAN latency and trust are still two major issues in MCC that hinder its vision. In this paper, we analyze MCC and discuss its issues. We leverage Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) to propose an arbitrated multi-tier infrastructure model named SAMI for MCC. Our architecture consists of three major layers, namely SOA, arbitrator,…
High computational time is one of the most important operational issues in centralized dynamic shared ridehailing services. To resolve this issue, we propose a distributed ride-matching system that is based on vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) and infrastructure to infrastructure (I2I) communication. The application on downtown Toronto road network demonstrated that the distributed system resulted in a speed-up of 125 times in terms of computational time and showed high scalability. Moreover, the service rate in the proposed system improved by 7% compared to the centralized. However, the central…
Proliferation of cloud computing has revolutionized hosting and delivery of Internet-based application services. However, with the constant launch of new cloud services and capabilities almost every month by both big (e.g., Amazon Web Service, Microsoft Azure) and small companies (e.g. Rackspace, Ninefold), decision makers (e.g. application developers, CIOs) are likely to be overwhelmed by choices available. The decision making problem is further complicated due to heterogeneous service configurations and application provisioning Quality of Service (QoS) constraints. To address this hard chall…
In this article, we describe the PyCloudIoT cloud infrastructure. PyCloudIoT uses a FaaS cloud computing model for offloading numerical computations on a cluster with resource-constrained nodes rather than powerful datacenter. This infrastructure aims at exploiting unused resources of IoT nodes - already deployed at the edge of the network - to reduce latency of user requests. This extra computation must be done without significant energy consumption - IoT nodes being battery-powered. -- Dans cet article, nous décrivons l'infrastructure cloud PyCloudIoT. PyCloudIoT s'appuie sur un modèle de cl…
Recent technology advancements in the areas of compute, storage and networking, along with the increased demand for organizations to cut costs while remaining responsive to increasing service demands have led to the growth in the adoption of cloud computing services. Cloud services provide the promise of improved agility, resiliency, scalability and a lowered Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). This research introduces a framework for minimizing cost and maximizing resource utilization by using an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) approach to optimize the assignment of workloads to servers on Amazon…
Cloud Computing is an Internet based computing, whereby shared resources, software and information, are provided to computers and devices on demand, like the electricity grid. Currently, IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service) and SaaS (Software as a Service) are used as a business model for Cloud Computing. Nowadays, the adoption and deployment of Cloud Computing is increasing in various domains, forcing researchers to conduct research in the area of Cloud Computing globally. Setting up the research environment is critical for the researchers in the developing countri…
Cloud computing is a recent paradigm based around the notion of delivery of resources via a service model over the Internet. Despite being a new paradigm of computation, cloud computing owes its origins to a number of previous paradigms. The term cloud computing is well defined and no longer merits rigorous taxonomies to furnish a definition. Instead this survey paper considers the past, present and future of cloud computing. As an evolution of previous paradigms, we consider the predecessors to cloud computing and what significance they still hold to cloud services. Additionally we examine th…
Cloud computing is the latest computing paradigm that delivers hardware and software resources as virtualized services in which users are free from the burden of worrying about the low-level system administration details. Migrating Web applications to Cloud services and integrating Cloud services into existing computing infrastructures is non-trivial. It leads to new challenges that often require innovation of paradigms and practices at all levels: technical, cultural, legal, regulatory, and social. The key problem in mapping Web applications to virtualized Cloud services is selecting the best…

The compass of Cloud infrastructure services advances steadily leaving users in the agony of choice. To be able to select the best mix of service offering from an abundance of possibilities, users must consider complex dependencies and heterogeneous sets of criteria. Therefore, we present a PhD thesis proposal on investigating an intelligent decision support system for selecting Cloud based infrastructure services (e.g. storage, network, CPU).
Fog/edge computing, function as a service, and programmable infrastructures, like software-defined networking or network function virtualisation, are becoming ubiquitously used in modern Information Technology infrastructures. These technologies change the characteristics and capabilities of the underlying computational substrate where services run (e.g. higher volatility, scarcer computational power, or programmability). As a consequence, the nature of the services that can be run on them changes too (smaller codebases, more fragmented state, etc.). These changes bring new requirements for se…
One of the major restrictions on the practical applications of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) is their incomplete self-sufficiency, which makes continuous operations infeasible without human oversights. The more oversight UAVs require, the less likely they are going to be commercially advantageous when compared to their alternatives. As an autonomous system, how much human interaction is needed to function is one of the best indicators evaluating the limitations and inefficiencies of the UAVs. Popular UAV related research areas, such as path planning and computer vision, have enabled substanti…
Computational Grids are emerging as new infrastructure for Internet-based parallel and distributed computing. They enable the sharing, exchange, discovery, and aggregation of resources distributed across multiple administrative domains, organizations and enterprises. To accomplish this, Grids need infrastructure that supports various services: security, uniform access, resource management, scheduling, application composition, computational economy, and accountability. Many Grid projects have developed technologies that provide many of these services with an exception of accountability. To over…
League Championship Algorithm (LCA) is a sports-inspired population based algorithmic framework for global optimization over a continuous search space first proposed by Ali Husseinzadeh Kashan in the year 2009. A common characteristic between all population based optimization algorithms similar to the LCA is that, they attemt to move a population of achievable solutions to potential areas of the search space during optimization. In this paper, we proposed a job scheduling algorithm based on the L CA optimization technique for the infrastructure as a service (IaaS) cloud. Three other establishe…
Autonomous driving clouds provide essential services to support autonomous vehicles. Today these services include but not limited to distributed simulation tests for new algorithm deployment, offline deep learning model training, and High-Definition (HD) map generation. These services require infrastructure support including distributed computing, distributed storage, as well as heterogeneous computing. In this paper, we present the details of how we implement a unified autonomous driving cloud infrastructure, and how we support these services on top of this infrastructure.
Development of autonomous and self-driving vehicles requires agile and reliable services to manage hazardous road situations. Vehicular Network is the medium that can provide high-quality services for self-driving vehicles. The majority of service requests in Vehicular Networks are delay intolerant (e.g., hazard alerts, lane change warning) and require immediate service. Therefore, Vehicular Networks, and particularly, Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) systems must provide a consistent real-time response to autonomous vehicles. During peak hours or disasters, when a surge of requests arrives at …
Function as a Service (FaaS) is a new cloud technology with automated resource management. Different from traditional cloud computing, each FaaS cloud function can only run a fixed period of time before being decommissioned. Furthermore, FaaS cloud providers often update their platforms (e.g., idle timeout). These changes and their associated impact are not transparent and could potentially impact the execution of the cloud functions. Hence, in this paper, we develop a methodology to characterize the cloud function idle timeout which is the duration a FaaS cloud provider keeps a cloud function…
Cloud environment is very different from traditional computing environment and therefore tracking the performance of cloud leverages additional requirements. The movement of data in cloud is very fast. Hence, it requires that resources and infrastructure available at disposal must be equally competent. Infrastructure level performance in cloud involves the performance of servers, network and storage which act as the heart and soul for driving the entire cloud business. Thus a constant improvement and enhancement of infrastructure level performance is an important task that needs to be taken in…
An increasing number of technology enterprises are adopting cloud-native architectures to offer their web-based products, by moving away from privately-owned data-centers and relying exclusively on cloud service providers. As a result, cloud vendors have lately increased, along with the estimated annual revenue they share. However, in the process of selecting a provider's cloud service over the competition, we observe a lack of universal common ground in terms of terminology, functionality of services and billing models. This is an important gap especially under the new reality of the industry…

The proliferation of demanding applications and edge computing establishes the need for an efficient management of the underlying computing infrastructures, urging the providers to rethink their operational methods. In this paper, we propose an Intelligent Proactive Fault Tolerance (IPFT) method that leverages the edge resource usage predictions through Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN). More specifically, we focus on the process-faults, which are related with the inability of the infrastructure to provide Quality of Service (QoS) in acceptable ranges due to the lack of processing power. In orde…
In the near future FPGAs will be available by the hour, however this new Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) usage mode presents both an opportunity and a challenge: The opportunity is that programmers can potentially trade resources for performance on a much larger scale, for much shorter periods of time than before. The challenge is in finding and traversing the trade-off for heterogeneous IaaS that guarantees increased resources result in the greatest possible increased performance. Such a trade-off is Pareto optimal. The Pareto optimal trade-off for clusters of heterogeneous resources can b…
This paper reports on experience with using semantically-enabled network resource models to construct an operational multi-domain networked infrastructure-as-a-service (NIaaS) testbed called ExoGENI, recently funded through NSF's GENI project. A defining property of NIaaS is the deep integration of network provisioning functions alongside the more common storage and computation provisioning functions. Resource provider topologies and user requests can be described using network resource models with common base classes for fundamental cyber-resources (links, nodes, interfaces) specialized via v…
The European Union is on course to introduce a European Digital Identity that will be available to all EU citizens and businesses. This will have a huge impact on how citizens and businesses interact online. Big Tech companies currently dictate how digital identities are used. As a result, they have amassed vast amounts of private user data. Movements like Self-Sovereign Identity aim to give users control over their online identity. TrustVault is the first data wallet that gives users back control of their identity and all their data. TrustVault allows users to store all their data on their sm…
Many of the services a smart city can provide to its citizens rely on the ability of its infrastructure to collect and process in real time vast amounts of continuous data that sensors deployed through the city produce. In this paper we present the server infrastructure we have designed in the context of the HERMES project to collect the data from sensors and aggregate it in streams for their use in services of the smart city.
Pervasive services may be defined as services that are available "to any client (anytime, anywhere)". Here we focus on the software and network infrastructure required to support pervasive contextual services operating over a wide area. One of the key requirements is a matching service capable of as-similating and filtering information from various sources and determining matches relevant to those services. We consider some of the challenges in engineering a globally distributed matching service that is scalable, manageable, and able to evolve incrementally as usage patterns, data formats, ser…
More and more household appliances connect to the Internet and exchange data freely. This is the foundation for true smart buildings. However, there is still no uniform communication technology available, which can connect all appliances from all vendors. Protocols differ between manufacturers making interoperability difficult or even impossible. Manufacturers cannot rely on a reference for the implementation and real estate developers and operators are reluctant to commit to a system until it is clear which one will prevail. A similar situation is evident in smart grids and applies equally to…
Cloud computing is a new archetype that provides dynamic computing services to cloud users through the support of datacenters that employs the services of datacenter brokers which discover resources and assign them Virtually. The focus of this research is to efficiently optimize resource allocation in the cloud by exploiting the Max-Min scheduling algorithm and enhancing it to increase efficiency in terms of completion time (makespan). This is key to enhancing the performance of cloud scheduling and narrowing the performance gap between cloud service providers and cloud resources consumers/use…
Infrastructure as a Service model of cloud computing is a desirable platform for the execution of cost and deadline constrained workflow applications as the elasticity of cloud computing allows large-scale complex scientific workflow applications to scale dynamically according to their deadline requirements. However, scheduling of these multitask workflow jobs in a distributed computing environment is a computationally hard multi-objective combinatorial optimization problem. The critical challenge is to schedule the workflow tasks whilst meeting user quality of service (QoS) requirements and t…
As an application usage grows, its owner scales up vertically by replacing old machines with more powerful ones. This methodology is expensive and leads to resource waste. In response to the business needs, internet giants have developed the microservice architecture, which lets developers divide up their application into smaller units that can be hosted on multiple machines, thus enabling horizontal scale up. We propose a triphasic incremental process to transform a traditional application into a microservice application that guarantees stability during the operation. Then we demonstrated suc…
This study focuses on the feasibility of commercial cloud services for connected vehicle (CV) applications in a Transportation Cyber-Physical Systems (TCPS) environment. TCPS implies that CVs, in addition to being connected with each other, communicates with the transportation and computing infrastructure to fulfill application requirements. The motivation of this study is to accelerate commercial cloud-based CV application development by presenting the lessons learned by implementing a CV mobility application using Amazon Web Services (AWS). The feasibility of the cloud-based CV application i…
This paper describes the achievements of the H2020 project INDIGO-DataCloud. The middleware developed allows to federate hybrid resources, to easily write, port and run scientific applications to the cloud. In particular, we have extended existing PaaS (Platform as a Service) solutions, allowing public and private e-infrastructures, including those provided by EGI, EUDAT, and Helix Neb…
Smart farming is a recent innovation in the agriculture sector that can improve the agricultural yield by using smarter, automated, and data driven farm processes that interact with IoT devices deployed on farms. A cloud-fog infrastructure provides an effective platform to execute IoT applications. While fog computing satisfies the real-time processing need of delay-sensitive IoT services by bringing virtualized services closer to the IoT devices, cloud computing allows execution of applications with higher computational requirements. The deployment of IoT applications is a critical challenge …
Globalized computing infrastructures offer the convenience and elasticity of globally managed objects and services, but lack the resilience to distant failures that localized infrastructures such as private clouds provide. Providing both global management and resilience to distant failures, however, poses a fundamental problem for configuration services: How to discover a possibly migratory, strongly-consistent service/object in a globalized infrastructure without dependencies on globalized state? Limix is the first metadata configuration service that addresses this problem. With Limix, global…
