As part of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 Cloud services are increasingly interacting with low-performance devices that are used in automation. This results in security issues that will be presented in this paper. Particular attention is paid to so-called critical infrastructures. The authors intend to work on the addressed security challenges as part of a funded research project, using electrical actuators and battery storages as specific applications. The core ideas of this research project are also presented in this paper.
The cloud computing model is rapidly transforming the IT landscape. Cloud computing is a new computing paradigm that delivers computing resources as a set of reliable and scalable internet-based services allowing customers to remotely run and manage these services. Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) is one of the popular cloud computing services. IaaS allows customers to increase their computing resources on the fly without investing in new hardware. IaaS adapts virtualization to enable on-demand access to a pool of virtual computing resources. Although there are great benefits to be gained fr…
Grid computing is concerned with the sharing and coordinated use of diverse resources in distributed "virtual organizations." The dynamic and multi-institutional nature of these environments introduces challenging security issues that demand new technical approaches. In particular, one must deal with diverse local mechanisms, support dynamic creation of services, and enable dynamic creation of trust domains. We describe how these issues are addressed in two generations of the Globus Toolkit. First, we review the Globus Toolkit version 2 (GT2) approach; then, we describe new approaches develope…
Current network security systems are a collection of various security components, which are directly installed in the operating system. These check the whole node for suspicious behaviour. Armouring intrusions e.g. have the ability to hide themselves from being checked. We present in this paper an alternative organisation of security systems. The node is completely virtualized with current virtualization systems so that the operating system with applications and the security system is distinguished. The security system then checks the node from outside and the right security components are pro…
The paper is a technical analysis of the security infrastructure in the field of RFID technology. The paper briefly discusses the architecture of the RFID technology. Then it analyses the various features and advantages RFID technology has over the existing technologies like bar codes. This is followed by a discussion of the various disadvantages and security drawbacks of RFID technology that prevents its widespread adoption in the mainstream market. The paper concludes with a brief analysis of some of the security measures that are implemented within the RFID technology for securing up the wh…
Virtual asset service providers (VASPs) currently face a number of challenges, both from the technological and the regulatory perspectives. In the context of virtual asset transfers one key issue is the need for VASPs to securely exchange customer information to comply to the Travel Rule. We discuss a VASP information sharing network as one form of a trust infrastructure for VASP-to-VASP interactions. Related to this is the need for a trusted identity infrastructure for VASPs that would permit other entities to quickly ascertain the legal business status of a VASP. For regulated wallets, an at…
This paper outlines the design and development of a survey targeting the cyber-security culture assessment of critical infrastructures during the COVID-19 crisis, when living routine was seriously disturbed and working reality fundamentally affected. Its foundations lie on a security culture framework consisted of 10 different security dimensions analysed into 52 domains examined under two different pillars: organizational and individual. In this paper, a detailed questionnaire building analysis is being presented while revealing the aims, goals and expected outcomes of each question. It concl…
Infrastructures supporting distributed scientific collaborations must address competing goals in both providing high-performance access to resources while simultaneously securing the infrastructure against security threats. The NetBASILISK project is attempting to improve the security of such infrastructures while not adversely impacting their performance. This paper will present our work to create a benchmark and monitoring infrastructure that allows us to test for any degradation in transferring data into a NetBASILISK protected site.
An infrastructure network is a self-organizing network with help of Access Point (AP) of wireless links connecting nodes to another. The nodes can communicate without an ad hoc. They form an uninformed topology (BSS/ESS), where the nodes play the role of routers and are free to move randomly. Infrastructure networks proved their efficiency being used in different fields but they are highly vulnerable to security attacks and dealing with this is one of the main challenges of these networks at present. In recent times some clarification are proposed to provide authentication, confidentiality, av…
There is a growing interest today in blockchain technology as a possible foundation for the future global financial ecosystem. However, in order for this future financial ecosystem to be truly global, with a high degree of interoperability and stability, a number challenges need to be addressed related to infrastructure security. One key aspect concerns the security and robustness of the systems that participate in the blockchain peer-to-peer networks. In this paper we discuss the notion of the decentralized trusted computing base as an extension of the TCB concept in trusted computing. We exp…
Despite being beneficial for managing computing infrastructure automatically, Puppet manifests are susceptible to security weaknesses, e.g., hard-coded secrets and use of weak cryptography algorithms. Adequate mitigation of security weaknesses in Puppet manifests is thus necessary to secure computing infrastructure that are managed with Puppet manifests. A characterization of how security weaknesses propagate and affect Puppet-based infrastructure management, can inform practitioners on the relevance of the detected security weaknesses, as well as help them take necessary actions for mitigatio…
Since the 1960s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems have been used within industry. Referred to as critical infrastructure (CI), key installations such as power stations, water treatment and energy grids are controlled using SCADA. Existing literature reveals inherent security risks to CI and suggests this stems from the rise of interconnected networks, leading to the hypothesis that the rise of interconnectivity between corporate networks and SCADA system networks pose security risks to CI. The results from studies into previous global attacks involving SCADA and CI, with…
In this paper we provide a guide for public key infrastructure designers and administrators when planning for directory services. We concentrate on the LDAP directories and how they can be used to successfully publish PKI information. We analyse their available mechanisms and propose a best practice guide for use in PKI. We then take a look into the German Signature Act and Ordinance and discuss their part as far as directories concerning. Finally, we translate those to the LDAP directories practices.
The paper at hand presents the design of a survey aiming at the cyber-security culture assessment of critical infrastructures during the COVID-19 crisis, when living reality was heavily disturbed and working conditions fundamentally affected. The survey is rooted in a security culture framework layered into two levels, organizational and individual, further analyzed into 10 different security dimensions consisted of 52 domains. An in-depth questionnaire building analysis is presented focusing on the aims, goals, and expected results. It concludes with the survey implementation approach while u…
This short paper is presented in observance and promotion of November, the National Month of Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience (CISR), established by the United States Department of Homeland Security in 2013. The CISR term focuses on essential assets (critical infrastructures) and two ultimate goals of making them secure and resilient. These assets and goals were put together in 2013 in the now well-known Presidential Policy Directive on CISR (PPD-21). This paper presents easy-to-ready material laying down the building blocks of CISR - what it means to you as a regular citizen, p…

Energy providers are moving to the smart meter era, encouraging consumers to install, free of charge, these devices in their homes, automating consumption readings submission and making consumers life easier. However, the increased deployment of such smart devices brings a lot of security and privacy risks. In order to overcome such risks, Intrusion Detection Systems are presented as pertinent tools that can provide network-level protection for smart devices deployed in home environments. In this context, this paper is exploring the problems of Advanced Metering Infrastructures (AMI) and propo…
Network & internet security is the burning question of today's world and they are deeply related to each other for secure successful data transmission. Network security approach is totally based on the concept of network security services. In this paper, a new system of network security service is implemented which is more secure than conventional network security services. This technique is mainly deals with two essential network security services, one is user authentication and other is data confidentiality. For user authentication this paper introduces Graphical Username & Voice Password ap…
Electric vehicles (EVs) are key to alleviate our dependency on fossil fuels. The future smart grid is expected to be populated by millions of EVs equipped with high-demand batteries. To avoid an overload of the (current) electricity grid, expensive upgrades are required. Some of the upgrades can be averted if users of EVs participate to energy balancing mechanisms, for example through bidirectional EV charging. As the proliferation of consumer Internet-connected devices increases, including EV smart charging stations, their security against cyber-attacks and the protection of private data beco…
Smart grid security is crucial to maintain stable and reliable power system operation during the contingency situation due to the failure of any critical power system component. Ensuring a secured smart grid involves with a less possibility of power grid collapse or equipment malfunction. Due to lack of the proper security measures, a major blackout may occur which can even lead to a cascading failure. Therefore, to protect this critical power system infrastructure and to ensure a reliable and an uninterrupted power supply to the end users, smart grid security issues must be addressed with hig…
Service meshes have emerged as an attractive DevOps solution for collecting, managing, and coordinating microservice deployments. However, current service meshes leave fundamental security mechanisms missing or incomplete. The security burden means service meshes may actually cause additional workload and overhead for administrators over traditional monolithic systems. By assessing the effectiveness and practicality of service mesh tools, this work provides necessary insights into the available security of service meshes. We evaluate service meshes from two perspectives: skilled system adminis…
Dependability is an important characteristic that a trustworthy computer system should have. It is a measure of Availability, Reliability, Maintainability, Safety and Security. The focus of our research is on security of web services. Web services enable the composition of independent services with complementary functionalities to produce value-added services, which allows organizations to implement their core business only and outsource other service components over the Internet, either pre-selected or on-the-fly. The selected third party web services may have security vulnerabilities. Vulner…
Often the hardest job is to get business representatives to look at security as something that makes managing their risks and achieving their objectives easier, with security compliance as just part of that journey. This paper addresses that by making planning for security services a 'business tool'.
Conventional wireless security assumes wireless communications are rightful and aims to protect them against malicious eavesdropping and jamming attacks. However, emerging infrastructure-free mobile communication networks are likely to be illegally used (e.g., by criminals or terrorists) but difficult to be monitored, thus imposing new challenges on the public security. To tackle this issue, this article presents a paradigm shift of wireless security to the surveillance and intervention of infrastructure-free suspicious and malicious wireless communications, by exploiting legitimate eavesdropp…
Web services use tokens provided by the WS-Security standard to implement security protocols. We propose several extensions to the WS-Security standard, including name types, key and random number extensions. The extensions are used to implement existing protocols such as ISO9798, Kerberos or BAN-Lowe. The advantages of using these implementations rather than the existing, binary ones, are inherited from the advantages of using Web service technologies, such as extensibility and end-to-end security across multiple environments that do not support a connection-based communication.
It is a big challenge for resource-limited mobile devices (MDs) to execute various complex and energy-consumed mobile applications. Fortunately, as a novel computing paradigm, edge computing (MEC) can provide abundant computing resources to execute all or parts of the tasks of MDs and thereby can greatly reduce the energy of MD and improve the QoS of applications. However, offloading workflow tasks to the MEC servers are liable to external security threats (e.g., snooping, alteration). In this paper, we propose a security and energy efficient computation offloading (SEECO) strategy for service…
Quantum computing technologies pose a significant threat to the currently employed public-key cryptography protocols. In this paper, we discuss the impact of the quantum threat on public key infrastructures (PKIs), which are used as a part of security systems for protecting production environments. We analyze security issues of existing models with a focus on requirements for a fast transition to post-quantum solutions. Although our primary focus is on the attacks with quantum computing, we also discuss some security issues that are not directly related to the used cryptographic algorithms but…
This paper discusses the security considerations for remote electronic voting in public elections. In particular, we examine the feasibility of running national federal elections over the Internet. The focus of this paper is on the limitations of the current deployed infrastructure in terms of the security of the hosts and the Internet itself. We conclude that at present, our infrastructure is inadequate for remote Internet voting.
In this paper, we show a security engineering process based on a formal notion of refinement fully formalized in the proof assistant Isabelle. This Refinement-Risk Cycle focuses on attack analysis and security refinement supported by interactive theorem proving. Since we use a fully formalized model of infrastructures with actors and policies we can support a novel way of formal security refinement for system specifications. This formal process is built practically as an extension to the Isabelle Infrastructure framework with attack trees. We define a formal notion of refinement on infrastruct…
The security features of current digital services are mostly defined and dictated by the service provider (SP). A user can always decline to use a service whose terms do not fulfill the expected criteria, but in many cases, even a simple negotiation might result in a more satisfying outcome. This article aims at building nonrepudiable security service-level agreements (SSLAs) between a user and an SP. The proposed mechanism provides a means to describe security requirements and capabilities in different dimensions, from overall targets and risks to technical specifications, and it also helps i…
Smart city is one of the most known Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The smart city services improve user's daily lives. However, security and privacy issues are slowing down their adoption. In addition, the characteristics of IoT devices, applications and users make security implementation of the considered applications a challenging task. To address these issues, we present, in this paper, a new context-aware security and privacy architecture for the IoT. Thanks to the "as a service" approach, this new architecture will be user-centric. It will also support known context-aware security…
The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) equips vehicles with connectivity to the Internet and the Internet of Things (IoT) to support modern applications such as autonomous driving. However, the consolidation of complex computing domains of vehicles, the Internet, and the IoT limits the applicability of tailored security solutions. In this paper, we propose a new methodology to quantitatively verify the security of single or system-level assets of the IoV infrastructure. In detail, our methodology decomposes assets of the IoV infrastructure with the help of reference sub-architectures and the 4+1 view …
The mass integration and deployment of intelligent technologies within critical commercial, industrial and public environments have a significant impact on business operations and society as a whole. Though integration of these critical intelligent technologies pose serious embedded security challenges for technology manufacturers which are required to be systematically approached, in-line with international security regulations. This paper establish security foundation for such intelligent technologies by deriving embedded security requirements to realise the core security functions laid out …
Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is the process of managing IT infrastructure via programmable configuration files (also called IaC scripts). Like other software artifacts, IaC scripts may contain security smells, which are coding patterns that can result in security weaknesses. Automated analysis tools to detect security smells in IaC scripts exist, but they focus on specific technologies such as Puppet, Ansible, or Chef. This means that when the detection of a new smell is implemented in one of the tools, it is not immediately available for the technologies supported by the other tools -- the on…
Android allows apps to communicate with its system services via system service helpers so that these apps can use various functions provided by the system services. Meanwhile, the system services rely on their service helpers to enforce security checks for protection. Unfortunately, the security checks in the service helpers may be bypassed via directly exploiting the non-SDK (hidden) APIs, degrading the stability and posing severe security threats such as privilege escalation, automatic function execution without users' interactions, crashes, and DoS attacks. Google has proposed various appro…
The Internet of Things and Services is a rapidly growing concept that illustrates that the ever increasing amount of physical items of our daily life which become addressable through a network could be made more easily manageable and usable through the use of Services. This surge of exposed resources along with the level of privacy and value of the information they hold, together with the increase of their usage make for an augmentation in the number of the security threats and violation attempts that existing security systems do not appear robust enough to address. In this paper, the authors …
In this paper we provide evidence of an emerging criminal infrastructure enabling impersonation attacks at scale. Impersonation-as-a-Service (ImpaaS) allows attackers to systematically collect and enforce user profiles (consisting of user credentials, cookies, device and behavioural fingerprints, and other metadata) to circumvent risk-based authentication system and effectively bypass multi-factor authentication mechanisms. We present the ImpaaS model and evaluate its implementation by analysing the operation of a large, invite-only, Russian ImpaaS platform providing user profiles for more tha…
Software-as-a-service (SaaS) is a type of software service delivery model which encompasses a broad range of business opportunities and challenges. Users and service providers are reluctant to integrate their business into SaaS due to its security concerns while at the same time they are attracted by its benefits. This article highlights SaaS utility and applicability in different environments like cloud computing, mobile cloud computing, software defined networking and Internet of things. It then embarks on the analysis of SaaS security challenges spanning across data security, application se…
The world is rapidly adopting RESTful web services for most of its tasks. The once popular SOAP-based web services are fast losing ground owing to this. RESTful web services are light weight services without strict message formats. RESTful web services, unlike SOAP, are capable of message transfer in any format be it XML, JSON, plain text. However, in spite of these positives, ensuring message level security in REST is a challenge. Security in RESTful web services is still largely dependent upon transport layer security. There has been some work recently towards message level security in such …
This article surveys blockchain-based approaches for several security services. These services include authentication, confidentiality, privacy, and access control list (ACL), data and resource provenance, and integrity assurance. All these services are critical for the current distributed applications, especially due to the large amount of data being processed over the networks and the use of cloud computing. Authentication ensures that the user is who he/she claims to be. Confidentiality guarantees that data cannot be read by unauthorized users. Privacy provides the users the ability to cont…
Smart Grids are evolving as the next generation power systems that involve changes in the traditional ways of generation, transmission and distribution of power. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is one of the key components in smart grids. An AMI comprises of systems and networks, that collects and analyzes data received from smart meters. In addition, AMI also provides intelligent management of various power-related applications and services based on the data collected from smart meters. Thus, AMI plays a significant role in the smooth functioning of smart grids. AMI is a privileged tar…

The 5G network systems are evolving and have complex network infrastructures. There is a great deal of work in this area focused on meeting the stringent service requirements for the 5G networks. Within this context, security requirements play a critical role as 5G networks can support a range of services such as healthcare services, financial and critical infrastructures. 3GPP and ETSI have been developing security frameworks for 5G networks. Our work in 5G security has been focusing on the design of security architecture and mechanisms enabling dynamic establishment of secure and trusted end…
A technology platform that is gradually bridging the gap between object visibility and remote accessibility is the Internet of Things (IoT). Rapid deployment of this application can significantly transform the health, housing, and power (distribution and generation) sectors, etc. It has considerably changed the power sector regarding operations, services optimization, power distribution, asset management and aided in engaging customers to reduce energy consumption. Despite its societal opportunities and the benefits it presents, the power generation sector is bedeviled with many security chall…
