This paper presents a tutorial on stochastic geometry (SG) based analysis for cellular networks. This tutorial is distinguished by its depth with respect to wireless communication details and its focus on cellular networks. The paper starts by modeling and analyzing the baseband interference in a basic cellular network model. Then, it characterizes signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) and its related performance metrics. In particular, a unified approach to conduct error probability, outage probability, and rate analysis is presented. Although the main focus of the paper is on cellul…
Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) has emerged as a powerful multiple access, interference management, and multi-user strategy for next generation communication systems. In this tutorial, we depart from the orthogonal multiple access (OMA) versus non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) discussion held in 5G, and the conventional multi-user linear precoding approach used in space-division multiple access (SDMA), multi-user and massive MIMO in 4G and 5G, and show how multi-user communications and multiple access design for 6G and beyond should be intimately related to the fundamental problem of…
In-band full-duplex (IBFD) operation has emerged as an attractive solution for increasing the throughput of wireless communication systems and networks. With IBFD, a wireless terminal is allowed to transmit and receive simultaneously in the same frequency band. This tutorial paper reviews the main concepts of IBFD wireless. Because one the biggest practical impediments to IBFD operation is the presence of self-interference, i.e., the interference caused by an IBFD node's own transmissions to its desired receptions, this tutorial surveys a wide range of IBFD self-interference mitigation techniq…
We consider the problem of distributed channel allocation in large networks under the frequency-selective interference channel. Performance is measured by the weighted sum of achievable rates. Our proposed algorithm is a modified Fictitious Play algorithm that can be implemented distributedly and its stable points are the pure Nash equilibria of a given game. Our goal is to design a utility function for a non-cooperative game such that all of its pure Nash equilibria have close to optimal global performance. This will make the algorithm close to optimal while requiring no communication between…
This paper considers the maximization of information rates for the Gaussian frequency-selective interference channel, subject to power and spectral mask constraints on each link. To derive decentralized solutions that do not require any cooperation among the users, the optimization problem is formulated as a static noncooperative game of complete information. To achieve the so-called Nash equilibria of the game, we propose a new distributed algorithm called asynchronous iterative waterfilling algorithm. In this algorithm, the users update their power spectral density in a completely distribute…
In this letter, we study the ambient backscatter communication systems over frequency-selective channels. Specifically, we propose an interference-free transceiver design to facilitate signal detection at the reader. Our design utilizes the cyclic prefix (CP) of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) source symbols, which can cancel the signal interference and thus enhance the detection accuracy at the reader. Meanwhile, our design results in no interference on the existing OFDM communication systems. We also suggest a maximum likelihood (ML) detector for the reader and derive two d…
This tutorial studies relationships between differential privacy and various information-theoretic measures by using several selective articles. In particular, we present how these connections can provide new interpretations for the privacy guarantee in systems that deploy differential privacy in an information-theoretic framework. To this end, the tutorial provides an extensive summary on the existing literature that makes use of information-theoretic measures and tools such as mutual information, min-entropy, Kullback-Leibler divergence and rate-distortion function for quantification and cha…
In this paper we discuss the use of cooperative game theory for analyzing interference channels. We extend our previous work, to games with N players as well as frequency selective channels and joint TDM/FDM strategies. We show that the Nash bargaining solution can be computed using convex optimization techniques. We also show that the same results are applicable to interference channels where only statistical knowledge of the channel is available. Moreover, for the special case of two players $2\times K$ frequency selective channel (with K frequency bins) we provide an $O(K \log_2 K)$ complex…
Millimeter wave (mm-wave) and massive MIMO have been proposed for next generation wireless systems. However, there are many open problems for the implementation of those technologies. In particular, beamforming is necessary in mm-wave systems in order to counter high propagation losses. However, conventional beamsteering is not always appropriate in rich scattering multipath channels with frequency selective fading, such as those found in indoor environments. In this context, time-reversal (TR) is considered a promising beamforming technique for such mm-wave massive MIMO systems. In this paper…
Existing studies about ambient backscatter communication mostly assume flat-fading channels. However, frequency-selective channels widely exist in many practical scenarios. Therefore, this paper investigates ambient backscatter communication systems over frequency-selective channels. In particular, we propose an interference-free transceiver design to facilitate signal detection at the reader. Our design utilizes the cyclic prefix (CP) of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) source symbols, which can cancel the signal interference and thus enhance the detection accuracy at the rea…
In this paper, we study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the frequency-selective K-user interference channel in the presence of an instantaneous relay (IR) with multiple receive and transmit antennas. We investigate two scenarios based on the IR antennas' cooperation ability. First, we assume that the IR receive and transmit antennas can coordinate with each other, where the transmitted signal of each transmit antenna can depend on the received signals of all receive antennas, and we derive an achievable DoF for this model. In our interference alignment scheme, we divide receivers into two grou…
In-band full-duplex transmission allows a relay station to theoretically double its spectral efficiency by simultaneously receiving and transmitting in the same frequency band, when compared to the traditional half-duplex or out-of-band full-duplex counterpart. Consequently, the induced self-interference suffered by the relay may reach considerable power levels, which decreases the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in a decode-and-forward (DF) relay, leading to a degradation of the relay performance. This paper presents a technique to cope with the problem of self-interference in …
In this paper, we study the non-convex problem of continuous frequency optimal spectrum management in multiuser frequency selective interference channels. Firstly, a simple pairwise channel condition for FDMA schemes to achieve all Pareto optimal points of the rate region is derived. It enables fully distributed global optimal decision making on whether any two users should use orthogonal channels. Next, we present in detail an analytical solution to finding the global optimum of sum-rate maximization in two-user symmetric flat channels. Generalizing this solution to frequency selective channe…
Filter bank based multicarrier with Offset-QAM systems (FBMC/OQAM) are strong candidates for the waveform of future 5-th generation (5G) wireless standards. These systems can achieve maximum spectral efficiency compared to other multicarrier schemes, particularly in highly frequency selective propagation conditions. In this case a multi-tap, fractionally spaced equalizer or precoder needs to be inserted in each subcarrier at the receiver or transmitter side to compensate inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI). In this paper we propose a new Tomlinson-Harashima pre…
In doubly selective channels, receiver windowing constitutes an effective technique for enhancing the banded structure of the frequency-domain channel matrix, and thus improving the effectiveness of a banded equalizer for intercarrier interference (ICI) mitigation. A common window design technique, which performs close to optimal, is based on the criterion of maximum average signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). The optimality of this technique has been verified for stationary channels with perfectly known statistics. However, in cases where this assumption does not hold, a near opti…

In this paper, a game-theoretic model for studying power control for wireless data networks in frequency-selective multipath environments is analyzed. The uplink of an impulse-radio ultrawideband system is considered. The effects of self-interference and multiple-access interference on the performance of Rake receivers are investigated for synchronous systems. Focusing on energy efficiency, a noncooperative game is proposed in which users in the network are allowed to choose their transmit powers to maximize their own utilities, and the Nash equilibrium for the proposed game is derived. It is …
In this paper we consider the problem of distributed channel allocation in large networks under the frequency-selective interference channel. Performance is measured by the weighted sum of achievable rates. First we present a natural non-cooperative game theoretic formulation for this problem. It is shown that, when interference is sufficiently strong, this game has a pure price of anarchy approaching infinity with high probability, and there is an asymptotically increasing number of equilibria with the worst performance. Then we propose a novel non-cooperative M Frequency-Selective Interferen…
In this letter, we propose threshold-based selective cooperative-NOMA (TBS-C-NOMA) to increase the data reliability of conventional cooperative-NOMA (C-NOMA) networks. In TBS-C-NOMA, the intra-cell user forwards the symbols of cell-edge user after successive interference canceler (SIC) only if the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) is greater than the pre-determined threshold value. Hence, the data reliability of the cell-edge user is increased by eliminating the effect of the error propagation. We derive closed-form end-to-end exact bit error probability (BEP) of proposed system f…
The most relevant linear precoding method for frequency-flat MIMO broadcast channels is block diagonalization (BD) which, under certain conditions, attains the same nonlinear dirty paper coding channel capacity. However, BD is not easily translated to frequency-selective channels, since space-time information is required for transceiver design. In this paper, we demonstrate that BD is feasible in frequency-selective MIMO broadcast channels to eliminate inter-user interference (IUI) if the transmit block length is sufficiently large, and if the number of transmit antennas is greater than the nu…
An efficient interference alignment (IA) scheme is developed for $K$-user single-input single-output frequency selective fading interference channels. The main idea is to steer the transmit beamforming matrices such that at each receiver the subspace dimensions occupied by interference-free desired streams are asymptotically the same as those occupied by all interferences. Our proposed scheme achieves a higher multiplexing gain at any given number of channel realizations in comparison with the original IA scheme, which is known to achieve the optimal multiplexing gain asymptotically.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the recently developed mixed-ADC architecture for frequency-selective channels. Multi-carrier techniques such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) are employed to handle inter-symbol interference (ISI). A frequency-domain equalizer is designed for mitigating the inter-carrier interference (ICI) introduced by the nonlinearity of one-bit quantization. For static single-input-multiple-output (SIMO) channels, a closed-form expression of the generalized mutual information (GMI) is derived, and based on which the linear frequency-domain equaliz…
Interference is traditionally viewed as a performance limiting factor in wireless communication systems, which is to be minimized or mitigated. Nevertheless, a recent line of work has shown that by manipulating the interfering signals such that they add up constructively at the receiver side, known interference can be made beneficial and further improve the system performance in a variety of wireless scenarios, achieved by symbol-level precoding (SLP). This paper aims to provide a tutorial on interference exploitation techniques from the perspective of precoding design in a multi-antenna wirel…
In this work, we address the problem of optimal spectrum management in continuous frequency domain in multiuser interference channels. The objective is to maximize the weighted sum of user capacities. Our main results are as follows: (i) For frequency-selective channels, we prove that in an optimal solution, each user uses maximum power; this result also generalizes to the cases where the objective is to maximize the weighted product (i.e., proportional fairness) of user capacities. (ii) For the special case of two users in flat channels, we solve the problem optimally.
Given the high throughput requirement for 5G, merging millimeter wave technologies and multi-user MIMO seems a very promising strategy. As hardware limitations impede to realize a full digital architecture, hybrid MIMO architectures, using digital precoding and phased antenna arrays, are considered a feasible solution to implement multi-user MIMO at millimeter wave. However, real channel propagation and hardware non-idealities can significantly degrade the performance of such systems. Experimenting the new architecture is thus crucial to confirm and to support system design. Nevertheless, hybr…
We consider zero-forcing equalization of frequency selective MIMO channels by causal and linear time-invariant precoders in the presence of intersymbol interference. Our motivation is twofold. First, we are concerned with the optimal performance of causal precoders from a worst case point of view. Therefore we construct an optimal causal precoder, whereas contrary to other works our construction is not limited to finite or rational impulse responses. Moreover we derive a novel numerical approach to computation of the optimal perfomance index achievable by causal precoders for given channels. T…
We consider single-antenna interference networks where M sources, each with an average transmit power of P/M, communicate with M destinations over frequency-selective channels (with L taps each) and each destination has perfect knowledge of its channels from each of the sources. Assuming that there exist error-free non-interfering broadcast feedback links from each destination to all the nodes (i.e., sources and destinations) in the network, we show that naive interference alignment, in conjunction with vector quantization of the impulse response coefficients according to the scheme proposed i…
This paper describes the limiting behavior of linear and decision feedback equalizers (DFEs) in single/multiple antenna systems employing real/complex-valued modulation alphabets. The wideband frequency selective channel is modeled using a Rayleigh fading channel model with infinite number of time domain channel taps. Using this model, we show that the considered equalizers offer a fixed post signal-to-noise-ratio (post-SNR) at the equalizer output that is close to the matched filter bound (MFB). General expressions for the post-SNR are obtained for zero-forcing (ZF) based conventional receive…
In this paper, a game-theoretic model for studying power control for wireless data networks in frequency-selective multipath environments is analyzed. The uplink of an impulse-radio ultrawideband system is considered. The effects of self-interference and multiple-access interference on the performance of generic Rake receivers are investigated for synchronous systems. Focusing on energy efficiency, a noncooperative game is proposed in which users in the network are allowed to choose their transmit powers to maximize their own utilities, and the Nash equilibrium for the proposed game is derived…
This paper studies the frequency/time selective $K$-user Gaussian interference channel with secrecy constraints. Two distinct models, namely the interference channel with confidential messages and the one with an external eavesdropper, are analyzed. The key difference between the two models is the lack of channel state information (CSI) about the external eavesdropper. Using interference alignment along with secrecy pre-coding, it is shown that each user can achieve non-zero secure Degrees of Freedom (DoF) for both cases. More precisely, the proposed coding scheme achieves $\frac{K-2}{2K-2}$ s…
Since the seminal paper by Marzetta from 2010, Massive MIMO has changed from being a theoretical concept with an infinite number of antennas to a practical technology. The key concepts are adopted in 5G and base stations (BSs) with $M=64$ full-digital transceivers have been commercially deployed in sub-6\,GHz bands. The fast progress was enabled by many solid research contributions of which the vast majority assume spatially uncorrelated channels and signal processing schemes developed for single-cell operation. These assumptions make the performance analysis and optimization of Massive MIMO t…
Differential distributed space-time coding (D-DSTC) is a cooperative transmission technique that can improve diversity in wireless relay networks in the absence of channel information. Conventionally, it is assumed that channels are flat-fading and relays are perfectly synchronized at the symbol level. However, due to the delay spread in broadband systems and the distributed nature of relay networks, these assumptions may be violated. Hence, inter-symbol interference (ISI) may appear. This paper proposes a new differential encoding and decoding process for D-DSTC systems with multiple relays o…
Interference networks with no channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) except for the knowledge of the connectivity graph have been recently studied under the topological interference management (TIM) framework. In this paper, we consider a similar problem with topological knowledge but in a distributed broadcast channel setting, i.e. a network where transmitter cooperation is enabled. We show that the topological information can also be exploited in this case to strictly improve the degrees of freedom (DoF) as long as the network is not fully connected, which is a reasonable assump…
In order to effetively suppress intersymbol interference (ISI) at low complexity, we propose in this paper an approximate maximum likelihood (ML) decision feedback block equalizer (A-ML-DFBE) for doubly selective (frequency-selective, time-selective) fading channels. The proposed equalizer design makes efficient use of the special time-domain representation of the multipath channels through a matched filter, a sliding window, a Gaussian approximation, and a decision feedback. The A-ML-DFBE has the following features: 1) It achieves performance close to maximum likelihood sequence estimation (M…
Channel estimation is useful in millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO communication systems. Channel state information allows optimized designs of precoders and combiners under different metrics such as mutual information or signal-to-interference-noise (SINR) ratio. At mmWave, MIMO precoders and combiners are usually hybrid, since this architecture provides a means to trade-off power consumption and achievable rate. Channel estimation is challenging when using these architectures, however, since there is no direct access to the outputs of the different antenna elements in the array. The MIMO channel …
The partial interference cancellation (PIC) group decoding has recently been proposed to deal with the decoding complexity and code rate trade-off on the basis of space-time block code (STBC) design criterion when full diversity is achieved. It provides a framework to arrange the rate-complexity-performance tradeoff by choosing a suitable size of information symbol groups. In this paper, a simple design of a linear dispersive space-time-frequency (STF) code is proposed with a design criterion to achieve high rate for frequency-selective channels in terms of multipath when the PIC group decodin…
In this paper, we investigate the performance of conventional cooperative sensing (CCS) and superior selective reporting (SSR)-based cooperative sensing in an energy harvesting-enabled heterogeneous cognitive radio network (HCRN). In particular, we derive expressions for the achievable throughput of both schemes and formulate nonlinear integer programming problems, in order to find the throughput-optimal set of spectrum sensors scheduled to sense a particular channel, given primary user (PU) interference and energy harvesting constraints. Furthermore, we present novel solutions for the underly…
