The production of acoustic signals from the interactions of ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic ray neutrinos in water and ice has been studied. A new computationally fast and efficient method of deriving the signal is presented. This method allows the implementation of up to date parameterisations of acoustic attenuation in sea water and ice that now includes the effects of complex attenuation, where appropriate. The methods presented here have been used to compute and study the properties of the acoustic signals which would be expected from such interactions. A matrix method of parameterising the signals, which includes the expected fluctuations, is also presented. These methods are used to generate the expected signals that would be detected in acoustic UHE neutrino telescopes.
To better understand the effect of ice properties on the capabilities of radio experiments designed to measure ultra-high energy neutrinos (UHEN), we recently considered the timing and amplitude characteristics of radio-frequency (RF) signals propagating along multi-kilometer, primarily horizontal trajectories through cold Polar ice at the South Pole. That analysis indicated satisfactory agreement with a model of ice birefringence based on c-axis data culled from the South Pole Ice Core Experiment (SPICE). Here we explore the geometrically complementary case of signals propagating along primar…
Ultra-high-energy (UHE) neutrinos ($>10^{16}$ eV) can be measured cost-effectively using in-ice radio detection, which has been explored successfully in pilot arrays. A large radio detector is currently being constructed in Greenland with the potential to measure the first UHE neutrino, and an order-of-magnitude more sensitive detector is being planned with IceCube-Gen2. For such shallow radio detector stations, we present an end-to-end reconstruction of the neutrino energy and direction using deep neural networks (DNNs) developed and tested on simulated data. The DNN determines the energy wit…
A possible detection of ultra-high-energy neutrinos has been attempted since decades through the Askarian radiation and different observation techniques. In fact, when such energetic neutrinos interact in a medium are able to produce a thermo-acoustic effect resulting in a bipolar pressure pulse that carries a portion of the energy generated by the particle cascades. This effect can be observed in atmosphere looking for the correlated radio emission and in ice/water searching directly the acoustic pulse. The kilometric attenuation length as well as the well-defined shape of the expected pulse …
A Monte Carlo simulation program for the radio detection of Ultra High Energy (UHE) neutrino interactions in the Antarctic ice as viewed by the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) is described in this article. The program, icemc, provides an input spectrum of UHE neutrinos, the parametrization of the Askaryan radiation generated by their interaction in the ice, and the propagation of the radiation through ice and air to a simulated model of the third and fourth ANITA flights. This paper provides an overview of the icemc simulation, descriptions of the physics models used and of the A…
Ultra high energy neutrinos may be observed in ice by the emission of acoustic signals. The SPATS detector has investigated the possibility of observing GZK-neutrinos in the clear ice near the South Pole at the IceCube detector site. To explore other potential detection sites glacial ice in the Alps and in Antarctica has been surveyed for its acoustical properties. The purpose of the Enceladus Explorer (EnEx), on the other hand, is the search for extraterrestrial life on the Saturn moon Enceladus. Here acoustics is used to maneuver a subsurface probe inside the ice by trilateration of signals.…
The sources of ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic rays, which can have energies up to 10^20 eV, remain a mystery. UHE neutrinos may provide important clues to understanding the nature of cosmic-ray sources. ARIANNA aims to detect UHE neutrinos via radio (Askaryan) emission from particle showers when a neutrino interacts with ice, which is an efficient method for neutrinos with energies between 10^16 eV and 10^20 eV. The ARIANNA radio detectors are located in Antarctic ice just beneath the surface. Neutrino observation requires that radio pulses propagate to the antennas at the surface with minimum…
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory will be upgraded with more than 700 additional optical sensor modules and new calibration devices. Improved calibration will enhance IceCube's physics capabilities both at low and high neutrino energies. An important ingredient for good angular resolution of the observatory is precise calibration of the positions of optical sensors. Ten acoustic modules, which are capable of receiving and transmitting acoustic signals, will be attached to the strings. These signals can additionally be detected by compact acoustic sensors inside some of the optical sensor module…
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory will be upgraded with about 700 additional optical sensor modules and new calibration devices. Particularly, improved calibration will enhance IceCube's physics capabilities both at low and high neutrino energies. An important ingredient for a good angular resolution of the observatory is a precise calibration of the positions of optical sensors. We present the concept of newly developed acoustic sensors that are mounted inside the optical modules and additional acoustic emitter modules that are attached to the strings. With this system we aim for the calibrati…
A method of simulation of particle cascades induced by ultra-high (>10$^{15}$ eV) and extremely high (>10$^{18}$ eV) energy neutrinos in water or other dense medium has been elaborated. The lateral spread of high-energy particles in cascades due to Coulomb scattering is negligible. So it is possible to use an approximation of the one-dimensional development of the UHE (or EHE) cascade if energies of particles in it higher than 10-100 GeV. An original program of the one-dimensional development of UHE and EHE cascades in dense media taking into account fluctuations and the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Mig…
Experimental efforts to measure neutrinos by radio-frequency (RF) signals resulting from neutrino interactions in-ice have intensified over the last decade. Recent calculations indicate that one may dramatically improve the sensitivity of ultra-high energy ("UHE"; >EeV) neutrino experiments via detection of radio waves trapped along the air-ice surface. Detectors designed to observe the "Askaryan effect" currently search for RF electromagnetic pulses propagating through bulk ice, and could therefore gain sensitivity if signals are confined to the ice-air boundary. To test the feasibilty of thi…
The measurement of ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrinos (E $>$ \SI{e16}{eV}) opens a new field of astronomy with the potential to reveal the sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays especially if combined with observations in the electromagnetic spectrum and gravitational waves. The ARIANNA pilot detector explores the detection of UHE neutrinos with a surface array of independent radio detector stations in Antarctica which allows for a cost-effective instrumentation of large volumes. Twelve stations are currently operating successfully at the Moore's Bay site (Ross Ice Shelf) in Antarctica and at…
