We explain the relationship between Majorana neutrinos, which are their own antiparticles, and Majorana neutrino masses. We point out that Majorana masses would make the neutrinos very distinctive particles, and explain why many theorists strongly suspect that neutrinos do have Majorana masses. The promising approach to confirming this suspicion is to seek neutrinoless double beta decay. We introduce a toy model that illustrates why this decay requires nonzero neutrino masses, even when there are both right-handed and left-handed weak currents.
Are neutrinos their own antiparticles? We explain why they very well might be. Then, after highlighting the fact that, to determine experimentally whether they are or not, one must overcome the smallness of neutrino masses, we discuss the one approach that nevertheless shows great promise. Finally, we turn to the consequences of neutrinos being their own antiparticles. These consequences include unusual electromagnetic properties, and manifestly CP-violating effects from ``Majorana'' phases that have no quark analogues.
We propose a test based on direct detection data that allows to determine if the dark matter particle is different from its antiparticle. The test requires the precise measurement of the dark matter spin-independent direct detection cross sections off $\mathrm{three}$ different nuclei, and consists of interpreting such signals in terms of self-conjugate (particle $=$ antiparticle) dark matter to see if such interpretation is consistent. If it is not, the dark matter must be different from its antiparticle. We illustrate this procedure for two sets of target nuclei, $\mathrm{\{Xe, Ar, Si\}}$ an…
We explain the physics of neutrino oscillation in vacuum and in matter. We attempt to clarify several features of oscillation that can be puzzling when neutrinos are their own antiparticles.
We explain why the see-saw picture and leptogenesis make it particularly interesting to find out whether neutrinos are their own antiparticles, and whether their oscillations violate CP.
Recent results on neutrinoless double beta decay, as reported by Klapdor-Kleingrothaus et al., take us for the first time into the realm of Majorana spacetime structure. However, this structure has either been treated as an afterthought to the Dirac construct; or, when it has been attended to in its own right, its physical and mathematical content was never fully unearthed. In this Letter,we undertake to remedy the existing situation. We present a detailed formalism required for the description of the non-trivial spacetime structure underlying the "nu-nubar" metamorphosis - where "nu" generica…
The interpretation of neutrino oscillation data has led to the question whether, in principle, an antiparticle like antineutrino can have a different mass than its particle. In the framework of a Lorentz invariant CPT violation, which is based on the nonlocal interaction vertex and characterized by the infrared divergent form factor, we present an explicit Lagrangian model for the fermion and antifermion mass splitting.
Two of the most important and pressing questions in cosmology and particle physics are: (1) What is the nature of cold dark matter? and (2) Will near-future experiments on neutrinoless double beta decay be able to ascertain that the neutrino is a Majorana particle, i.e. its own antiparticle? We show that these two seemingly unrelated issues are intimately connected if neutrinos acquire mass only because of their interactions with dark matter.
We hunt for and discuss manifestly CP-violating effects which are mediated by Majorana phases. These phases are present if the Standard Model neutrinos are Majorana particles. We argue that while Majorana phases do affect the strength of neutrinoless double beta decay (a well known fact), they do so in a way that involves no manifest violation of CP. The conditions for manifestly CP-violating phenomena -- differences between the rates for CP-mirror-image processes -- are presented, and three examples are discussed: (i) neutrino-antineutrino oscillation; (ii) rare decays of K and B mesons and t…
It is well known that neutrinoless double decay is going to play a crucial role in settling the neutrino properties, which cannot be extracted from the neutrino oscillation data. It is, in particular, expected to settle the absolute scale of neutrino mass and determine whether the neutrinos are Majorana particles, i.e. they coincide with their own antiparticles. In order to extract the average neutrino mass from the data one must be able to estimate the contribution all possible high mass intermediate particles. The latter, which occur in practically all extensions of the standard model, can, …
We consider the process $e^+e^-\to N_1N_2$, where $N_1$ and $N_2$ are heavy Majorana particles, with relative $CP$ given by $η_{CP}=+1$ or $-1$, decaying subsequently via $N_1,N_2\to W^{\pm}e^{\mp}$. We derive the energy and angle correlation of the dilepton final state, both for like-sign ($e^{\mp}e^{\mp}$) and unlike-sign ($e^-e^+$) configurations. Interesting differences are found between the cases $η_{CP}=+1$ and $-1$. The characteristics of unlike-sign $e^+e^-$ dileptons originating from a Majorana pair $N_1N_2$ are contrasted with those arising from the reaction $e^+e^-\to N\bar{N}\to W^…
Decoherence has the potential to explain all existing neutrino data including LSND results, without enlarging the neutrino sector. This particular form of CPT violation can preserve the equality of masses and mixing angles between particle and antiparticle sectors, and still provide seizable differences in the oscillation patterns. A simplified minimal model of decoherence is sufficient to explain the existing neutrino data quite neatly, while making dramatic predictions for the upcoming experiments. Some comments on the order of the decoherence parameters in connection with theoretically expe…
Properties of neutrinos, the lightest of all elementary particles, may be the origin of the entire matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe. This requires that neutrinos are Majorana particles, which are equal to their antiparticles, and that their masses are sufficiently small. Leptogenesis, the theory explaining the cosmic matter-antimatter asymmetry, predicts that all neutrino masses are smaller than 0.2 eV, which will be tested by forthcoming laboratory experiments and by cosmology.
We discuss how the intensity and the energy frontiers provide complementary constraints within a minimal model of neutrino mass involving just one new field beyond the Standard Model at accessible energy, namely a doubly charged scalar $S^{++}$ and its antiparticle $S^{--}$. In particular we focus on the complementarity between high-energy LHC searches and low-energy probes such as lepton flavor violation. Our setting is a prime example of how high- and low-energy physics can cross-fertilize each other.
Neutrinoless double beta decay is a hypothetical radioactive process which, if observed, would prove the neutrino to be a Majorana fermion: a particle that is its own antiparticle. In this lecture mini-series I discuss the physics of Majorana fermions and the connection between the nature of neutrino mass and neutrinoless double beta decay. We review Dirac and Majorana spinors, discuss methods of distinguishing between Majorana and Dirac fermions, and derive in outline the connection between neutrino mass and double beta decay rates. We conclude by briefly summarizing the experimental landscap…
We examine the production and decay of extremely heavy magnetically charged leptons, (tau_g and mu_g), to their own very heavy mu_g and e_g plus their own new species of neutrinos, nu_g and nubar_g, at some time early in the universe which could be present in space and, attracted gravitationally towards and passing through astronomical objects, annihilated with each other to produce large numbers of photons. Further, we describe the possibility of presently detecting the bursts of such photons, of three different total energies, in the seas or oceans on earth.
A quantum field model for Dirac-like tachyons respecting a frame-dependent interpretation rule, and thus inherently breaking Lorentz invariance, is defined. It is shown how the usual paradoxa ascribed to tachyons, instability and acausality, are resolved in this model, and it is argued elsewhere that Lorentz symmetry breaking is necessary to permit perturbative renormalizability and causality. Elimination of negative-normed states results in only left-handed particles and right-handed antiparticles, suitable for describing the neutrino. In this context the neutron beta decay spectrum is calcul…
The study of anomalous electromagnetic emission in the sky is the basis of indirect searches for dark matter. It is also a powerful tool to constrain the radiative decay of active neutrinos. Until now, quantitative analyses have focused on the flux and energy spectrum of such an emission; polarisation has never been considered. Here we show that we could be missing out on an essential piece of information. The radiative decay of neutrinos, as well as the interactions of dark matter and neutrinos with Standard Model particles can generate a circular polarisation signal in X-rays or γ-rays. If o…
The existence of the mirror world, with the same microphysics as our own one but with opposite P-asymmetry, not only restores an exact equivalence between left and right but also naturally explains, via a see-saw like mechanism, why the neutrino is ultralight.
We re-examine the neutrino decay solution to the solar neutrino problem in the light of the SuperKamiokande (SK) data. For the decay solution the SK spectrum data by its own can provide a fit comparable to the fit obtained from the MSW solution. However when one combines the results from the total rates of the $^{37}{Cl}$ and $^{71}{Ga}$ experiments the fit becomes much poorer.
Ever since the Majorana classic work, the nature of neutrino has been one of the central questions of the weak interaction physics. If neutrino is its own antiparticle, the immediate consequence is lepton number violation through the neutrinoless double beta decay. However, colliders such as the LHC offer a hope of seeing directly the same phenomenon, and moreover the Majorana nature of new particles needed to complete the Standard Model. I review here the salient features of these phenomena, and then turn to grand unification as a way of probing the scale of the relevant new physics. The mini…
The Bayesian discovery probability of future experiments searching for neutrinoless double-$β$ decay is evaluated under the popular assumption that neutrinos are their own antiparticles. A Bayesian global fit is performed to construct a probability distribution for the effective Majorana mass, the observable of interest for these experiments. This probability distribution is then combined with the sensitivity of each experiment derived from a heuristic counting analysis. The discovery probability is found to be higher than previously considered, but strongly depends on whether the neutrino mas…
We discuss a generalization of the Pauli-Gursey transformation, which is motivated by the Autonne-Takagi factorization, to an arbitrary $n$ number of generations of neutrinos using $U(2n)$ that defines general canonical transformations and diagonalizes symmetric complex Majorana mass matrices in special cases. The Pauli-Gursey transformation mixes particles and antiparticles and thus changes the definition of the vacuum and C. We define C, P and CP symmetries at each Pauli frame specified by a generalized Pauli-Gursey transformation. The Majorana neutrinos in the C and P violating seesaw model…
We study a consistent explanation for both deficits of solar neutrino and atmospheric neutrino due to the neutrino oscillation induced by the mixing of light neutrinos with a heavy right-handed neutrino. We propose such a phenomenological neutrino mass matrix that realizes this scenario in the simple three generation left- and right- handed neutrino framework. Although this model contains only one nonzero mass eigenvalue $\sim$ 10 eV for these light neutrino states at the first approximation level, it can be expected to explain consistently both deficiency due to the appropriate higher order c…
The Neutrinoless double beta Decay allows to determine the effectice Majorana electron neutrino mass. For this the following conditions have to be satisfied: (i) The neutrino must be a Majorana particle, i. e. identical to the antiparticle. (ii) The half life has to be measured. (iii)The transition matrix element must be reliably calculated. (iv) The leading mechanism must be the light Majorana neutrino exchange. The present contribution studies the accuracy with which one can calculate by different methods: (1) Quasi-Particle Random Phase Approach (QRPA), (2) the Shell Model (SM), (3) the (be…
We discuss leptogenesis in the context of type-II seesaw in the case in which in addition to the scalar electroweak triplet decays the lepton asymmetry is also induced by right-handed neutrino decays (mild hierarchical scenarios). We show that within this setup, depending on the relative sizes of the relevant parameters, one can identify three classes of generic models, each one with its own consequences for leptogenesis.
The existence of neutrino mass and mixing is a strong pointer towards physics beyond the standard model. An overview of the possibility of having neutrino masses in supersymmetric theories is attempted here. Some of the recent works reviewed suggest Dirac masses, whereas others include Majorana masses as well. Side by side, it is shown how R-parity violating supersymmetry opens new avenues in the neutrino sector. Reference is also made to light sterile neutrinos, nearly degenerate neutrinos and neutrinos acquiring masses from hard supersymmetry breaking terms which are suppressed by the Planck…
We point out a novel possibility for neutrinos where all neutrino flavors can be part Dirac and part Majorana. Our primary motivation for this model comes from an attempt to use supersymmetric see-saw models to tie inflation, baryon asymmetry of the Universe and dark matter to the neutrino sector. The idea however could stand on its own, with or without supersymmetry. We present a realization of this possibility within an $S_3$ family symmetry for neutrino masses, where we obtain tri-bi-maximal mixing for neutrinos to the leading order. The model predicts that for the case of inverted hierarch…
Small Recent theories have proposed a variety of massive particles, like the moduli, whose abundance or decay endangers standard cosmological results. To dilute them, thermal inflation has been proposed, with its own massive scalar flaton field which goes on decaying in the era of Mev-scale temperatures. In this paper, the effect of late-time entropy production on neutrino decoupling during such reheating is investigated by including a term, arising from the rate of entropy production due to scalar decay, in the Boltzmann equation for the neutrino number density. The effect on the decoupling t…
We ask the question whether neutrino physics with momentum space Majorana spinors, the eigenvectors of the particle--antiparticle conjugation operator, C=iγ_2 K (with K standing for complex conjugation), is different but physics with Dirac spinors. First we analyze properties of Majorana spinors in great detail. We show that four dimensional, (4d), Majorana spinors are unsuited for the construction of a local quantum field because C invariance does not allow for a covariant propagation in four spinor dimensions, a conduct due to γ_2γ_μ= -γ_μ* γ_2. The way out of this dilemma is finding one mor…
Sterile neutrinos have been invoked to explain the observed neutrino masses, but they can also have significant implications for cosmology and accelerator experiments. We explore the collider signatures of a simple extension of the Standard Model, where sterile neutrinos acquire their mass after electroweak symmetry breaking, via their coupling to a real singlet Higgs. In this model, heavy sterile neutrinos can be produced in accelerators from decays of the Higgs bosons. Their own decay can yield distinct signals, suggesting both the presence of an extended Higgs sector and the coupling of the…
The $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ neutrinos (and their antiparticles) from a Galactic core-collapse supernova can be observed in a water-Čerenkov detector by the neutral-current excitation of $^{16}$O. The number of events expected is several times greater than from neutral-current scattering on electrons. The observation of this signal would be a strong test that these neutrinos are produced in core-collapse supernovae, and with the right characteristics. In this paper, this signal is used as the basis for a technique of neutrino mass determination from a future Galactic supernova. The masses of the $ν_μ$ …
It is known that realistic neutrino masses for neutrino oscillations may be obtained from R parity nonconserving supersymmetry. It is also known that such interactions would erase any preexisting lepton or baryon asymmetry of the Universe because of the inevitable intervention of the electroweak sphalerons. We now show how a crucial subset of these R parity nonconserving terms may in fact create its own successful leptogenesis.
Higher-dimensional models of neutrino physics with one or more right-handed neutrinos in the bulk have attracted considerable attention in recent years. However, a critical issue for such models is to find a way of introducing the required flavor dependence needed for generating neutrino oscillations. In this paper, we point out that a natural ``minimal'' framework that accomplishes this can be constructed by combining the bulk-neutrino hypothesis for right-handed neutrinos with the split-fermion scenario for left-handed neutrinos. This combination leads to a unique flavor signature for neutri…
The Majorana fermion: fermion that is its own antiparticle, was predicted by Majorana in 1937. No fundamental particles are known to be Majorana fermions, although there are speculations that the neutrino is one. Many proposed theories assumes that the mysterious 'dark matter', which forms the greatest part of the universe, is composed of Majorana fermions. Even Majorana does not yet observed as a stable particle, its can be also exist as a quasiparticle in the edge of topological isolators. Here we reports the Dark Matter bolometer time constant deviation which is the result of additional Maj…
What we call the Anti-GUT model is extended a bit to include also right-handed neutrinos and thus make use of the see-saw mechanism for neutrino masses. This model consists in assigning gauge quantum numbers to the known Weyl fermions and the three see-saw right-handed neutrinos. Each family (generation) is given its own Standard Model gauge fields and a gauge field coupled to the $B-L$ quantum number for that family alone. Further we assign a rather limited number of Higgs fields, so as to break these gauge groups down to the Standard Model gauge group and to fit, w.r.t. order of magnitude, t…
The existence of heavy neutrinos is the most prominent feature of type-I seesaw-like mechanisms, which naturally explain tiny masses of observed neutrinos. Various experiments have been conducted to search for heavy neutrinos, with meson decays sensitive to heavy neutrinos lighter than $B$ mesons and high energy collider experiments sensitive to the ones with masses larger than $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ TeV. In between, there is a mass gap uncovered by these two kinds of experiments, and by this work, we investigate the 3-15 GeV neutrino searches at future $Z$-factories via the process $e^{-}e^{+}\ri…
Atmospheric neutrinos are an important background to astrophysical neutrino searches, and are also of considerable interest in their own right. This paper points out that the contribution to conventional atmospheric $ν_e$ of the rare semileptonic decay of $K_S$ becomes significant at high energy. Although the $K_S\rightarrow πeν$ branching ratio is very small, the short $K_S$ lifetime leads to a high critical energy, so that, for vertical showers, the inclusion of $K_S$ semileptonic decay increases the conventional $ν_e$ flux by $\approx 30%$ at energies above 100 TeV. In this paper, we presen…
