Consequences of the Production of Very Massive Magnetically Charged Leptons Early in the Universe and Their Decays to a New Set of Extremely Massive Neutrinos
We examine the production and decay of extremely heavy magnetically charged leptons, (tau_g and mu_g), to their own very heavy mu_g and e_g plus their own new species of neutrinos, nu_g and nubar_g, at some time early in the universe which could be present in space and, attracted gravitationally towards and passing through astronomical objects, annihilated with each other to produce large numbers of photons. Further, we describe the possibility of presently detecting the bursts of such photons, of three different total energies, in the seas or oceans on earth.
A specific model of parity-conserving lepton substructure is considered. We show that a positive-definite contribution to the muon $(g-2)/2$ at the possible level of about $4\times 10^{-9}$, can be related to a significant increase in the interaction cross section for cosmic-ray neutrinos with energies above about $10^{19}$ eV. The additional cross section at $\sim 10^{20}$ eV is calculated to be $\sim 10^{-29}$ cm$^2$, which is about 100 times the standard weak-interaction cross section. The model involves an extremely massive, neutral lepton, with $m_L\cong 2\times 10^6$ GeV fixed by the new…
We present the results of numerical calculations on propagation of Extremely-high energy (EHE) neutrinos and charged leptons in the earth for trajectories in all phase space of nadir angles. Our comprehensive calculation has shown that not only the secondary produced muons but also taus survive without decaying in energy range of 10PeV-100PeV with intensity approximately three orders of magnitude lower than the neutrino flux regardless of EHE neutrino production models. They form detectable horizontal or downgoing events in a 1km$^3$ underground neutrino telescope such as the IceCube detector.…
In models where the Standard Model spectrum is localized on a brane embedded in a higher dimensional spacetime, we discuss the lepton number violation induced by the emission of right-handed neutrinos from the brane. We show that quite generically the presence of the right-handed neutrinos in the bulk leads to rapid lepton number violating processes which above the electroweak scale would wash away any prior lepton or baryon asymmetry. In order to preserve the lepton asymmetry, the brane-bulk couplings for at least one lepton flavor must be extremely suppressed. We show that this has a natural…
We examine the possibility of detecting effects of leptonic CP violation by precise measurement of the solar neutrinos within the framework of standard electroweak theory minimally extended to include neutrino masses and mixing. We prove a ``no-go theorem'' which states that effects of CP violating phase disappear in the nu_e survival probability to the leading order in electroweak interaction. The effects due to the next-to-leading order correction is estimated to be extremely small, effectively closing the door to the possibility we intended to pursue.
In this paper, an electroweak model with massive neutrinos is proposed. The symmetry of the model is $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times U(1)_M$. Because of the mixing of neutrinos, the conversion of one lepton type to another is possible, but many of those kind processes are of extremely small possibilities. The total lepton-number conservation still holds in this model, so neutrinoless double beta decay is prohibited. Though right-hand neutrinos are introduced into the model, their coupling with matter fields is extremely small and therefore they are much harder to be detected in experiments.
Electric dipole moments and charged-lepton flavour-violating processes are extremely sensitive probes for new physics, complementary to direct searches as well as flavour-changing processes in the quark sector. Beyond the "smoking-gun" feature of a potential significant measurement, however, it is crucial to understand their implications for new physics models quantitatively. The corresponding multi-scale problem of relating the existing high-precision measurements to fundamental parameters can be approached model-independently to a large extent; however, care must be taken to include the unce…
A model for composite elementary Standard Model (SM) particles based upon magnetically bound vorton pairs, briefly introduced here, predicts the existence of a complete family of magnetically charged particles, as well as their neutral isotopic partners (all counterparts to the SM elementary particles), in which the lowest mass (charged) particle would be an electrically neutral stable lepton, but which carries a magnetic charge equivalent to 1e. This new particle, which we call a magneticon (a counterpart to the electron) would be pair produced at all e+e- colliders at an Ecm above twice its …
The doubly charged Higgs bosons $Δ^{--}$ that are present in exotic Higgs representations can have lepton-number-violating couplings to $e^-e^-$. We discuss general constraints and phenomenology for the $Δ^{--}$ and demonstrate that extremely small values for the $e^-e^-\rightarrowΔ^{--}$ coupling (some 8 orders of magnitude smaller than the current limit) would produce observable signals for $Δ^{--}$ production in direct $s$-channel production at an $e^-e^-$ collider.
Lepton number violating processes are a typical problem in theories with a low quantum gravity scale. In this paper we examine lepton number violation (LNV) in theories with a saturated black hole bound on a large number of species. Such theories have been advocated recently as a possible solution to the hierarchy problem and an explanation of the smallness of neutrino masses. Naively one would expect black holes to introduce TeV scale LNV operators, thus generating unacceptably large rates of LNV processes. We show, however, that this does not happen in this scenario due to a complicated comp…
The transitions $B_{s,d}\rightarrow \ell^+\ell^-$ (for $\ell=e, μ, τ$), although extremely suppressed within the SM, are exceptionally clean channels particularly sensitive to New Physics contributions. So far only the branching ratio for the process $B_{s}\rightarrow μ^+μ^-$ has been measured experimentally and, although the results are in agreement with the SM prediction, there is still room for NP effects. Here we provide an overview of the theoretical status of rare decays. We present strategies that can allow us to discriminate between different NP scenarios. Finally, we include a discuss…
We study the five-body decays $μ^- \to e^- e^+ e^- ν_μ \barν_{e}$ and $τ^- \to \ell^- \ell'^+\ell'^-ν_τ\barν_{\ell}$ for $\ell, \ell'=e, μ$ within the Standard Model (SM) and in a general effective field theory description of the weak interactions at low energies. We compute the branching ratios and compare our results with two previous, mutually discrepant, SM calculations. By assuming a general structure for the weak currents we derive the expressions for the energy and angular distributions of the three charged leptons when the decaying lepton is polarized, which will be useful in precise t…
We investigate charged lepton flavor violating (CFLV) processes in the `neutrinophilic Higgs+seesaw model', in which right-handed neutrinos couple only with an extra Higgs field which develops a tiny VEV and the right-handed neutrinos also have Majorana mass. The model realizes a seesaw mechanism around TeV scale without extremely small Dirac Yukawa couplings. A phenomenological feature of the model is CFLV processes induced by loop diagrams of the charged scalar particles and heavy neutrinos. Therefore, first we constrain the model's parameter space from the search for $μ\to eγ$. Next, we pre…
The name "magneticon" in this paper refers to a magnetically charged spin 1/2 particle predicted by incorporating a symmetry of classical electromagnetism, called dyality symmetry, into a certain model for the structure of point-like fermions. (Actually, it is anticipated that there would be a full spectrum, both hadronic and leptonic, of such magnetically charged particles.) The lightest of these magneticons is anticipated to be leptonic in nature and predicted to have the same magnitude of electromagnetic charge (in Gaussian units) as the electron, except that it is magnetic. Accompanying th…
We study the lepton-flavor-violating reaction $μ^+ e^- \to e^+ e^-$ within two extensions of the standard model that include heavy neutrinos. The reaction is studied in the low energy limit in the form of muonium decay $M\to e^+ e^-$ and in the high energy regime of a muon collider. The two theoretical models we consider are: model I, a typical see-saw model that violates lepton flavor and number by inclusion of extra right handed neutrinos, and model II, a variant where lepton number is conserved and which includes extra right handed as well as left handed neutrinos, singlets under the gauge …
One of the main purposes of SHiP experiment is to shed light on neutrino mass generation mechanisms like the so-called seesaw. We consider a minimal type-I seesaw neutrino mass mechanism model with two heavy neutral leptons (right-handed or sterile neutrinos) with arbitrary masses. Extremely high active-sterile mixing angle requires a correlation between the phases of the Dirac neutrino couplings. Actual experimental limits on the half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay $0νββ$-rate on the active-sterile mixing angle are not significative for SHiP.
We investigate the effect of extending the standard MSTW parameterisation of input parton distribution functions (PDFs) using Chebyshev polynomials. We find evidence that four powers in the polynomial are sufficient for extremely high precision. Applying this to valence and sea quarks we find an improvement in the global fit, but a significant change only in the small-$x$ valence up-quark PDF, $u_V$. We investigate the effect of also extending, and making more flexible, the `nuclear' correction to deuteron structure functions. The extended `Chebyshev' parameterisation results in an improved st…
We study the effect of scalar leptoquarks in the lepton flavour violating $B$ meson decays induced by the flavour changing transitions $b \to q l_i^+ l_j^-$ with $q=s,d$. In the standard model these transitions are extremely rare as they are either two-loop suppressed or proceed via box diagrams with tiny neutrino masses in the loop. However, in the leptoquark model they can occur at tree level and are expected to have significantly large branching ratios. The leptoquark parameter space is constrained using the experimental limits on the branching ratios of $B_q \rightarrow l^+ l^-$ processes.…
The lepton mixing angles of the PMNS matrix are predicted based on the lepton flavor symmetry of a finite group $C_2\times D_3$, where the cyclic group $C_2$ acts on the charged lepton mass terms and the dihedral group $D_3$ on the neutrino ones. All three mixing angles of the PMNS matrix are given in terms of just one parameter, the charged lepton mixing angle, and fit extremely well to the observed values. In particular, the smallness of $θ_{13}$ is explained in terms of the smallness of the muon-to-tau mass ratio.
For the first time the next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to the full off-shell production of two top quarks that decay leptonically are presented. This calculation includes all off-shell, non-resonant, and interference effects for the 6-particle phase space. While the electroweak corrections are below one per cent for the integrated cross section, they reach up to 15% in the high-transverse-momentum region of distributions. To support the results of the complete one-loop calculation, we have in addition evaluated the electroweak corrections in two different pole approximations, one…
The $CP$ violation in the neutrino transition electromagnetic dipole moment is discussed in the context of the Standard Model with an arbitrary number of right-handed singlet neutrinos. A full one-loop calculation of the neutrino electromagnetic form factors is performed in the Feynman gauge. A non-zero $CP$ asymmetry is generated by a required threshold condition for the neutrino masses along with non-vanishing $CP$ violating phases in the lepton flavour mixing matrix. We follow the paradiagm of $CP$ violation in neutrino oscillations to parametrise the flavour mixing contribution into a seri…
We study the magnetic moment of leptons in extremely hot universe and superdense media of stars at high temperatures. Anomalous magnetic moment of charged leptons is inversely proportional to its mass, whereas, the induced dipole moment of neutral leptons is directly proportional to their mass. Neutral massive point particles exert nonzero magnetic moment as a higher order effect, which is smaller than the anomalous magnetic moment of a charged particle of their same flavor partner. All leptons acquire some extra mass due to their interaction with the medium and affect the magnetic moment acco…
We examine lepton number violation (LNV) in theories with a saturated black hole bound on a large number of species. Such theories have been advocated recently as a possible solution to the hierarchy problem and an explanation of the smallness of neutrino masses. The violation of lepton number can be a potential phenomenological problem of this N-copy extension of the Standard Model as due to the low quantum gravity scale black holes may induce TeV scale LNV operators generating unacceptably large rates of LNV processes. We show, however, that this does not happen in this scenario due to a spe…
The rare K and B semileptonic decays into neutrino pairs are well-known to be extremely sensitive to non-standard physics in the quark sector. In this talk, their capabilities to signal New Physics in the leptonic sector, or even to reveal entirely new invisible sectors, are analyzed.
We discuss the interplay between lepton asymmetry L and neutrino oscillations in the early Universe. Neutrino oscillations may suppress or enhance previously existing L. On the other hand L is capable to suppress or enhance neutrino oscillations. The mechanism of L enhancement in MSW resonant neutrino oscillations in the early Universe is numerically analyzed. L cosmological effects through neutrino oscillations are discussed. We discuss how L may change the cosmological BBN constraints on neutrino and show that BBN model with electron-sterile neutrino oscillations is extremely sensitive to L …
As is the case for all light coloured Standard Model particles, also photons and charged leptons appear as constituents in ultrarelativistic hadron beams, and admit a parton density function (PDF). It has been shown recently that the photon PDF can be given in terms of the structure functions and form factors for electron-proton scattering. The same holds for lepton PDFs. In the present work we set up a calculation of the lepton PDFs at next-to-leading order, using the same data input needed in the photon case. A precise knowledge of the lepton densities allows us to study lepton-initiated pro…
We discuss the neutrino mass matrix based on the Occam's Razor approach in the framework of the seesaw mechanism. We impose four zeros in the Dirac neutrino mass matrix, which give the minimum number of parameters needed for the observed neutrino masses and lepton mixing angles, while the charged lepton mass matrix and the right-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrix are taken to be real diagonal ones. The low-energy neutrino mass matrix has only seven physical parameters. We show successful predictions for the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and the CP violating phase $δ_{CP}$ with the normal mass hierar…
The Affleck-Dine leptogenesis scenario along the LHu flat direction is reconsidered. It is known that successful Affleck-Dine leptogenesis requires that the lightest neutrino mass is extremely small. This situation can be significantly relaxed if the neutrino mass in the early universe is different from the present one. We consider a supersymmetric Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky (DFSZ) type model, which provides a solution to the strong CP problem and generates a SUSY mu-term and right-handed neutrino masses. If the PQ scale during lepton number generation is much larger than the present v…
A relic lepton asymmetry orders of magnitude bigger than the baryon one may hide in the relic neutrino background. No direct theoretical or experimental limitations on its magnitude and sign are known. Indirect cosmological constraints exist ranging from $|L|<0.01$ to $L<10$. We discuss a BBN model with late electron-sterile neutrino oscillations which is a fine leptometer - it is capable of feeling extremely small relic lepton asymmetry - $|L|>10^{-8}$. This sensitivity is achieved through the influence of such small $L$ on the neutrino oscillations, suppressing or enhancing them, and thus ch…
We evaluate both the tau lepton energy loss produced by photonuclear interactions and the neutrino charged current cross section at ultra-high energies, relevant to neutrino bounds with Earth-skimming tau neutrinos, using different theoretical and phenomenological models for nucleon and nucleus structure functions. The theoretical uncertainty is estimated by taking different extrapolations of the structure function F2 to very low values of x, in the low and moderate Q2 range for the tau lepton interaction and at high Q2 for the neutrino-nucleus inelastic cross section. It is at these extremely…
The existence of an anomalous U(1) symmetry is shown to play a crucial role in the supersymmetric radiative seesaw model for neutrino masses. It explains the smallness of some couplings related to neutrino mass generation in a favorable way in addition to cause the hierarchical structure of Yukawa couplings of quarks and leptons. If it is spontaneously broken to a $Z_2$ subgroup, this $Z_2$ symmetry can make a lifetime of the lightest field with its odd parity extremely long. Thus, the model has an additional dark matter candidate other than the lightest neutralino, which appears in the $R$-pa…
During the stalled-shock phase of our 3D hydrodynamical core-collapse simulations with energy-dependent, 3-flavor neutrino transport, the lepton-number flux (nue minus antinue) emerges predominantly in one hemisphere. This novel, spherical-symmetry breaking neutrino-hydrodynamical instability is termed LESA for "Lepton-number Emission Self-sustained Asymmetry." While the individual nue and antinue fluxes show a pronounced dipole pattern, the heavy-flavor neutrino fluxes and the overall luminosity are almost spherically symmetric. Initially, LESA seems to develop stochastically from convective …
We introduce the spin-charge separation mechanism to the quark-lepton unification models which consider the lepton number as the fourth color. In certain finite-density systems, quarks and leptons are decomposed into spinons and chargons, which carry the spin and charge degrees of freedom respectively. Neutrinos can be related to the spinons with respect to the electric-charge and spin separation in the early universe or other circumstances. Some effective, probably universal couplings between the spinon sector and the chargon sector are derived and a phenomenological description for the charg…
We point out that lepton number violation is possible even if neutrinos are Dirac particles. We illustrate this by constructing a simple model that allows for lepton number violation by four units only. As a consequence, neutrinoless double beta decay is forbidden, but neutrinoless quadruple beta decay is possible: $(A,Z) \to (A,Z+4) + 4 e^-$. We identify three candidate isotopes for this decay, the most promising one being Nd-150 due to its high $Q_{0ν4β}$-value of 2 MeV. Analogous processes, such as neutrinoless quadruple electron capture, are also possible. The expected lifetimes are extrem…
Drell-Yan lepton pair production processes are extremely important for Standard Model (SM) precision tests and for beyond the SM searches at hadron colliders. Fast and accurate predictions are essential to enable the best use of the precision measurements of these processes; they are used for parton density fits, for the extraction of fundamental parameters of the SM, and for the estimation of background processes in searches. This paper describes a new numerical program, DYTurbo, for the calculation of the QCD transverse-momentum resummation of Drell-Yan cross sections up to next-to-next-to-l…
Low-scale seesaw variants protected by lepton number symmetry provide a natural explanation of the smallness of neutrino masses but, unlike their higher-scale counterparts, with potentially testable phenomenology. The approximate lepton number symmetry arranges the heavy neutrinos in pseudo-Dirac pairs, which might be accessible at collider or even beam dump experiments if their mass is low enough and their mixing with the active neutrinos sufficiently large. Despite their pseudo-Dirac nature, their small mass splittings may lead to oscillations that prevent the cancellation of their potential…
Extremely weakly interacting particles like the gravitino may be stable enough on cosmological time scales to constitute a good dark matter candidate even in the presence of R-parity violation. We consider the possibility that the recently identified 3.5 keV x-ray line can be generated in light gravitino decays to neutrinos and photons. We find that this is indeed possible in loop processes induced by trilinear lepton-number-violating couplings. We show that in order to avoid overproduction of gravitinos, the reheating temperature has to be at most around 100 GeV to 1 TeV. Finally we briefly d…
Nuclear $β$ decays as well as the decay of the neutron are well-established low-energy probes of physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). In particular, with the axial-vector coupling of the nucleon $g_A$ determined from lattice QCD, the comparison between experiment and SM prediction is commonly used to derive constraints on right-handed currents. Further, in addition to the CKM element $V_{us}$ from kaon decays, $V_{ud}$ from $β$ decays is a critical input for the test of CKM unitarity. Here, we point out that the available information on $β$ decays can be re-interpreted as a stringent test o…
Allowed charged $π$ meson decays are characterized by simple dynamics, few available decay channels, mainly into leptons, and extremely well controlled radiative and loop corrections. In that sense, pion decays represent a veritable triumph of the standard model (SM) of elementary particles and interactions. This relative theoretical simplicity makes charged pion decays a sensitive means for testing the underlying symmetries and the universality of weak fermion couplings, as well as for studying pion structure and chiral dynamics. Even after considerable recent improvements, experimental preci…
In the charged pion decay, a neutrino is produced in pair with a charged lepton and they have the same production rate. In this paper we show that neutrinos have their own space-time correlations in a wide area and are detected in a different manner from charged leptons, owing to extremely small mass. The neutrino flux reveals a unique interference effect in the form of diffraction of non-stationary waves. The diffraction component of the flux shows a slow position-dependence and leads to an electron neutrino at short base-line regions. The electron neutrino flux at short distances is attribut…
Flavor symmetries are useful to realize fermion flavor structures in the standard model. In particular, discrete $A_4$ symmetry is used to realize lepton flavor structures, and some scalars which are called flavon are introduced to break this symmetry. In many models, flavons are assumed to be much heavier than the electroweak scale. However, our previous work showed that flavon mass around 100 GeV is allowed by experimental constraints in the $A_4$ symmetric model with residual $Z_3$ symmetry. In this paper, we discuss collider search of such a light flavon $φ_T$. We find that an electron - p…
Recent results from the MINOS accelerator neutrino experiment suggest a possible difference between nu_mu and anti-nu_mu disappearance oscillation parameters, which one may ascribe to a new long-distance potential acting on neutrinos. As a specific example, we consider a model with gauged B - L_e - 2 L_tau number that contains an extremely light new vector boson m_Z' < 10^-18 eV and extraordinarily weak coupling alpha' < 10^-52. In that case, differences between nu_mu to nu_tau and anti-nu_mu to anti-nu_tau oscillations can result from a long-range potential due to neutrons in the Earth and th…
We show that the measured abundance of ultra-faint lensed galaxies at $z\approx 6$ in the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) provides stringent constraints on the parameter space of i) Dark Matter models based on keV sterile neutrinos; ii) the "fuzzy" wavelike Dark Matter models, based on Bose-Einstein condensate of ultra-light particles. For the case of the sterile neutrinos, we consider two production mechanisms: resonant production through the mixing with active neutrinos and the decay of scalar particles. For the former model, we derive constraints for the combination of sterile neutrino mass $m…
