We present the first large-scale mosaic performed with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) in the Galactic center. We have produced a 25-pointing mosaic, covering a ~2' x 2' area around Sgr A*. We have detected emission from two high-density molecular tracers, HCN(4-3) and CS(7-6), the latter never before reported in this region. The data have an angular resolution of 4.6" x 3.1", and the spectral window coverage is from -180 km/s to 1490 km/s for HCN(4-3) and from -1605 km/s to 129 km/s for CS(7-6). Both molecular tracers present a very clumpy distribution along the circumnuclear disk (CND), and are detected with a high signal-to-noise ratio in the southern part of the CND, while they are weaker towards the northern part. Assuming that the clumps are as close to the Galactic center as their projected distances, they are still dense enough to be gravitationally stable against the tidal shear produced by the supermassive black hole. Therefore, the CND is a non-transient structure. This geometrical distribution of both tracers suggests that the southern part of the CND is denser than the northern part. Also, by comparing the HCN(4-3) results with HCN(1-0) results we can see that the northern and the southern parts of the CND have different excitation levels, with the southern part warmer than the northern. Finally, we compare our results with those obtained with the detection of NH3, which traces the warmer and less dense material detected in the inner cavity of the CND. We suggest that we are detecting the origin point where a portion of the CND becomes destabilized and approaches the dynamical center of the Milky Way, possibly being impacted by the southern streamer and heated on its way inwards.
Using long-slit optical spectra obtained with the 2-m telescope at IUCAA Girawali Observatory, we show that the radio source J094221.98+062335.2 (z=0.123) is associated with a galaxy pair undergoing a major merger. Its companion is a normal star-forming galaxy infalling with a velocity of 185 km/s at a projected separation of 4.8 kpc. Using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) and Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) we detect a strong HI 21-cm absorption at the systemic redshift of the radio galaxy with N(HI)~9x10^21 cm^{-2} for an assumed spin-temperature of 100 K. Such a strong…
Using N-body/SPH simulations we study the evolution of the separation of a pair of SMBHs embedded in a star forming circumnuclear disk (CND). This type of disk is expected to be formed in the central kilo parsec of the remnant of gas-rich galaxy mergers. Our simulations indicate that orbital decay of the SMBHs occurs more quickly when the mean density of the CND is higher, due to increased dynamical friction. However, in simulations where the CND is fragmented in high density gaseous clumps (clumpy CND), the orbits of the SMBHs are erratically perturbed by the gravitational interaction with th…
Several thousand solar masses of molecular, atomic and ionized gas lie in the innermost ~10 pc of our Galaxy. The most relevant structure of molecular gas is the circumnuclear ring (CNR), a dense and clumpy ring surrounding the supermassive black hole (SMBH), with a radius of ~2 pc. We propose that the CNR formed through the tidal disruption of a molecular cloud, and we investigate this scenario by means of N-body smoothed-particle hydrodynamics simulations. We ran a grid of simulations with different cloud mass (4X10^4, 1.3X10^5 solar masses), different initial orbital velocity (v_in=0.2-0.5 …
We present the first VLBI detection of HCN molecular absorption in the nearby active galactic nucleus NGC 1052. Utilizing the 1 milliarcsecond resolution achieved by the Korean VLBI Network, we have spatially resolved the HCN absorption against a double-sided nuclear jet structure. Two velocity features of HCN absorption are detected significantly at the radial velocity of 1656 and 1719 km/s, redshifted by 149 and 212 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy. The column density of the HCN molecule is estimated to be 10^{15}-10^{16} cm^{-2}, assuming the excitation temperature o…
The Galactic Center black hole and the nuclear star cluster are surrounded by a clumpy ring of gas and dust (the circumnuclear disk, CND) that rotates about them at a standoff distance of ~1.5 pc. The mass and density of individual clumps in the CND are disputed. We seek to use H$_2$ to characterize the clump size distribution and to investigate the morphology and dynamics of the interface between the ionized interior layer of the CND and the molecular reservoir lying further out (corresponding to the inner rim of the CND, illuminated in ultraviolet light by the central star cluster). We have …
The nearby bright radio galaxy 3C 84 at the center of Perseus cluster is one of the ideal targets to explore the jet in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and its parsec-scale environment. A recent research of Fujita & Nagai revealed the existence of the northern counter-jet component (N1) located at $\sim$ 2 mas north from the central core in VLBI images at 15 and 43 GHz and they are explained by the free-free absorption (FFA) due to an ionized plasma foreground. Here we report a new quasi-simultaneous observation of 3C 84 with the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) at 86 GHz and the KVN and VERA (VLBI Exp…
Active galactic nuclei play a key role in the evolution of galaxies, but their inner workings and physical connection to the host are poorly understood due to a lack of angular resolution. Infrared interferometry makes it possible to resolve the circumnuclear dust in the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy, Circinus. Previous observations have revealed complex structures and polar dust emission but interpretation was limited to simple models. MATISSE makes it possible to image these structures for the first time. We observed the Circinus Galaxy with VLTI/MATISSE, producing 150 correlated flux spectra and …
In currently favoured hierarchical cosmologies, the formation of massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) following galaxy mergers is unavoidable. Still, due the complex physics governing the (hydro)dynamics of the post-merger dense environment of stars and gas in galactic nuclei, the final fate of those MBHBs is still unclear. In gas-rich environments, it is plausible that turbulence and gravitational instabilities feed gas to the nucleus in the form of a series of cold incoherent clumps, thus providing a way to exchange energy and angular momentum between the MBHB and its surroundings. Within thi…
Utilizing James Clark Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) 850 $μ$m SCUPOL dust polarization data, we investigate the configuration of the magnetic ($B$) field in the circumnuclear disk (CND) of the Galactic Center (GC). The SCUPOL data show a highly improved polarization coverage and resolution compared to earlier 100 $μ$m observations. The 850 $μ$m data have a resolution and coverage similar to previous 350 $μ$m polarimetry data. However, with a proper sampling on a 10$"$ grid, we find the 850 $μ$m data trace the morphological structures of the CND substantially better. Furthermore, because the 850 $μ$m…
The accretion rates needed to fuel the central black hole in a galaxy can be achieved via viscous torques in thick disks and rings, which can be resolved by millimetre interferometry within the inner ~20pc of the active galaxy NGC1068 at comparable scales and sensitivity to single dish observations of the Circumnuclear Disk (CND) in the Galactic Center. To interpret observations of these regions and determine the physical properties of their gas distribution, we present a modelling effort that includes (i) a simple dynamical simulations involving partially inelastic collisions between disk gas…
Massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) represent an unavoidable outcome of hierarchical galaxy formation, but their dynamical evolution at sub-parsec scales is poorly understood, due to a combination of uncertainties in theoretical models and lack of firm observational evidence. In gas rich environments, it has been shown that a putative extended, steady circumbinary gaseous disc plays an important role in the MBHB evolution, facilitating its coalescence. How gas on galactic scales is transported to the nuclear region to form and maintain such a stable structure is, however, unclear. If, followin…
NGC 1808 is a nearby barred spiral galaxy which hosts young stellar clusters in a patchy circumnuclear ring with a radius of $\sim 240\,\mathrm{pc}$. In order to study the gaseous and stellar kinematics and the star formation properties of the clusters, we perform seeing-limited $H+K$-band near-infrared integral-field spectroscopy with SINFONI of the inner $\sim 600\,\mathrm{pc}$. From the $M_\mathrm{BH}-σ_*$ relation, we find a black hole mass of a few $10^7\,M_\odot$. We estimate the age of the young stellar clusters in the circumnuclear ring to be $\lesssim 10\,\mathrm{Myr}$. No age gradien…

The Galactic center hosts several hundred early-type stars, about 20% of which lie in the so-called clockwise disk, while the remaining 80% do not belong to any disks. The circumnuclear ring (CNR), a ring of molecular gas that orbits the supermassive black hole (SMBH) with a radius of 1.5 pc, has been claimed to induce precession and Kozai-Lidov oscillations onto the orbits of stars in the innermost parsec. We investigate the perturbations exerted by a gas ring on a nearly-Keplerian stellar disk orbiting a SMBH by means of combined direct N-body and smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations.…
We report ALMA observations of NGC 1052 to quest mass accretion in a gas-poor active galactic nucleus (AGN). We detected CO emission representing a rotating ring-like circumnuclear disk (CND) seen edge-on with the gas mass of $5.3 \times 10^{5}$ M$_{\odot}$. The CND has smaller gas mass than that in typical Seyfert galaxies with circumnuclear star formation and is too gas-poor to drive mass accretion onto the central engine. The continuum emission casts molecular absorption features of CO, HCN, HCO$^+$, SO, SO$_2$, CS, CN, and H$_2$O, with H$^{13}$CN and HC$^{15}$N and vibrationally-excited (v…
We present 1"-resolution ALMA observations of the circumnuclear disk (CND) and the environment around SgrA*. The images unveil the presence of small spatial scale CO (J=3-2) molecular "cloudlets" within the central pc of the Milky Way, moving at high speeds, up to 300 km/s along the line-of-sight. The CO-emitting structures show intricate morphologies: extended and filamentary at high negative-velocities (v_LSR < -150 km/s), more localized and clumpy at extreme positive-velocities (v_LSR > +200 km/s). Based on the pencil-beam CO absorption spectrum toward SgrA* synchrotron emission, we also pr…
We report serendipitous detections of line emission with ALMA in band 3, 6, and 7 in the central parsec of the Galactic center at an up to now highest resolution (<0.7''). Among the highlights are the very first and highly resolved images of sub-mm molecular emission of CS, H13CO+, HC3N, SiO, SO, C2H, and CH3OH in the immediate vicinity (~1'' in projection) of Sgr A* and in the circumnuclear disk (CND). The central association (CA) of molecular clouds shows three times higher CS/X (X: any other observed molecule) luminosity ratios than the CND suggesting a combination of higher excitation - by…
We have used the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) to map the emission of the CO(6-5) molecular line and the 432 μm continuum emission from the 300 pc-sized circumnuclear disk (CND) of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 with a spatial resolution of ~4 pc. These observations spatially resolve the CND and, for the first time, image the dust emission, the molecular gas distribution, and the kinematics from a 7-10 pc-diameter disk that represents the submillimeter counterpart of the putative torus of NGC 1068. We fitted the nuclear spectral energy distribution of the torus using ALMA and nea…
We report serendipitous detections of line emission with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in band 3, 6, and 7 in the central parsec down to within 1" around Sgr A* at an up to now highest resolution (<0.5") view of the Galactic Center (GC) in the sub-millimeter (sub-mm) domain. From the 100 GHz continuum and the H39αemission we obtain a uniform electron temperature around 6000 K for the minispiral. The spectral index of Sgr A* is ~ 0.5 at 100 - 250 GHz and ~ 0.0 at 230 - 340 GHz. The bright sources in the center show spectral indices around -0.1 implying Bremsstrahlung e…
We study the structure and kinematics of the OH-streamer and the +80 km/s cloud and their interactions with the circumnuclear disk (CND) and with other molecular clouds in the vicinity of the Galactic centre (GC), and we map OH absorption at about 6" resolution at R $\le$ 10 pc from the GC, with about 9 km/s velocity resolution. The VLA was used to map OH line absorption at the 1665 and 1667 MHz lambda doublet main lines towards the Sagittarius A complex. Strong OH absorption was found in the OH-streamer, the southern streamer (SS), the +20, +50, and +80 km/s molecular clouds, the molecular be…
We discuss five blue stellar systems in the direction of the Virgo cluster, analogous to the enigmatic object SECCO 1 (AGC 226067). These objects were identified based on their optical and UV morphology and followed up with HI observations with the VLA (and GBT), MUSE/VLT optical spectroscopy, and HST imaging. These new data indicate that one system is a distant group of galaxies. The remaining four are extremely low mass ($M_\ast \sim 10^5 \; \mathrm{M_\odot}$), are dominated by young, blue stars, have highly irregular and clumpy morphologies, are only a few kpc across, yet host an abundance …
