This is the first part of a work aimed at constructing the stress-energy tensor of conformal field theory as a local "object" in conformal loop ensembles (CLE). This work lies in the wider context of re-constructing quantum field theory from mathematically well-defined ensembles of random objects. The goal of the present paper is two-fold. First, we provide an introduction to CLE, a mathematical theory for random loops in simply connected domains with properties of conformal invariance, developed recently by Sheffield and Werner. It is expected to be related to CFT models with central charges between 0 and 1 (including all minimal models). Second, we further develop the theory by deriving results that will be crucial for the construction of the stress-energy tensor. We introduce the notions of support and continuity of CLE events, about which we prove basic but important theorems. We then propose natural definitions of CLE probability functions on the Riemann sphere and on doubly connected domains. Under some natural assumptions, we prove conformal invariance and other non-trivial theorems related to these constructions. We only use the defining properties of CLE as well as some basic results about the CLE measure. Although this paper is guided by the construction of the stress-energy tensor, we believe that the theorems proved and techniques used are of interest in the wider context of CLE. The actual construction will be presented in the second part of this work.
We construct the stress-energy tensor correlation functions in probabilistic Liouville Conformal Field Theory (LCFT) on the two-dimensional sphere by studying the variation of the LCFT correlation functions with respect to a smooth Riemannian metric. In particular, we derive conformal Ward identities for these correlation functions. This forms the basis for the construction of a representation of the Virasoro algebra on the canonical Hilbert space of the LCFT. In \cite{ward} the conformal Ward identities were derived for one and two stress-energy tensor insertions using a different definition …
We derive the conformal Ward identities for the correlation functions of the Stress--Energy tensor in probabilistic Liouville Conformal Field Theory on compact Riemann surfaces by varying the correlation functions with respect to the background metric. The conformal Ward identities show that the correlation functions of the Stress--Energy tensor can be expressed as a differential operator with meromorphic coefficient acting on the correlation functions of the primary fields of Liouville Conformal Field Theory. Variations of the metric come in three different forms: reparametrizations, conforma…
This is the second part of a work aimed at constructing the stress-energy tensor of conformal field theory (CFT) as a local "object" in conformal loop ensembles (CLE). This work lies in the wider context of re-constructing quantum field theory from mathematically well-defined ensembles of random objects. In the present paper, based on results of the first part, we identify the stress-energy tensor in the dilute regime of CLE. This is done by deriving both its conformal Ward identities for single insertion in CLE probability functions, and its properties under conformal transformations involvin…
Conformally flat spacetimes with an elastic stress energy tensor given by a diagonal trace-free anisotropic pressure tensor are investigated using 1+3 formalism. We show how the null tetrad Ricci components are related to the pressure components and energy density. The 1+3 Bianchi and Jacobi identities and Einstein field equations are written for this particular case. In general the commutators must be considered since they supply potentially new information on higher order derivatives of the 1+3 quantities. We solve the system for the non rotating case which consist of ODEs of a spatial coord…
We derive the Ward identities of Conformal Field Theory (CFT) within the framework of Schramm-Loewner Evolution (SLE) and some related processes. This result, inspired by the observation that particular events of SLE have the correct physical spin and scaling dimension, and proved through the conformal restriction property, leads to the identification of some probabilities with correlation functions involving the bulk stress-energy tensor. Being based on conformal restriction, the derivation holds for SLE only at the value kappa=8/3, which corresponds to the central charge c=0 and the case whe…
The vacuum state -- or any other state of finite energy -- is not an eigenstate of any smeared (averaged) local quantum field. The outcomes (spectral values) of repeated measurements of that averaged local quantum field are therefore distributed according to a non-trivial probability distribution. In this paper, we study probability distributions for the smeared stress tensor in two dimensional conformal quantum field theory. We first provide a new general method for this task based on the famous conformal welding problem in complex analysis. Secondly, we extend the known moment generating fun…
We give a construction of the stress-energy tensor of conformal field theory (CFT) as a local "object" in conformal loop ensembles CLE_κ, for all values of κin the dilute regime 8/3 < κ<= 4 (corresponding to the central charges 0 < c <= 1, and including all CFT minimal models). We provide a quick introduction to CLE, a mathematical theory for random loops in simply connected domains with properties of conformal invariance, developed by Sheffield and Werner (2006). We consider its extension to more general regions of definition, and make various hypotheses that are needed for our construction a…
We prove: the quantum field theories defined by conformally covariant derivatives of the U(1)-current algebra in 1+1 dimensions do not contain a stress energy tensor in the sense of the theorem of Luescher and Mack.
In conformal field theory (CFT) on simply connected domains of the Riemann sphere, the natural conformal symmetries under self-maps are extended, in a certain way, to local symmetries under general conformal maps, and this is at the basis of the powerful techniques of CFT. Conformal maps of simply connected domains naturally have the structure of an infinite-dimensional groupoid, which generalizes the finite-dimensional group of self-maps. We put a topological structure on the space of conformal maps on simply connected domains, which makes it into a topological groupoid. Further, we (almost) …
The Brownian loop soup (BLS) is a conformally invariant statistical ensemble of random loops in two dimensions characterized by an intensity $λ>0$. Recently, we constructed families of operators in the BLS and showed that they transform as conformal primary operators. In this paper we provide an explicit expression for the BLS stress-energy tensor and compute its operator product expansion with other operators. Our results are consistent with the conformal Ward identities and our previous result that the central charge is $c = 2 λ$. In the case of domains with boundary we identify a boundary o…
The conformal loop ensemble (CLE) is the canonical conformally invariant probability measure on non-crossing loops in a simply connected domain in $\mathbb C$ and is indexed by a parameter $κ\in (8/3,8)$. We consider CLE$_κ$ on the whole-plane in the regime in which the loops are self-intersecting ($κ\in (4,8)$) and show that it is invariant under the inversion map $z \mapsto 1/z$. This shows that whole-plane CLE$_κ$ for $κ\in (4,8)$ defines a conformally invariant measure on loops on the Riemann sphere. The analogous statement in the regime in which the loops are simple ($κ\in (8/3,4]$) was p…
Quantum energy inequalities (QEIs) are state-independent lower bounds on weighted averages of the stress-energy tensor, and have been established for several free quantum field models. We present rigorous QEI bounds for a class of interacting quantum fields, namely the unitary, positive energy conformal field theories (with stress-energy tensor) on two-dimensional Minkowski space. The QEI bound depends on the weight used to average the stress-energy tensor and the central charge(s) of the theory, but not on the quantum state. We give bounds for various situations: averaging along timelike, nul…
Simple conformal loop ensembles (CLE) are a class of random collection of simple non-intersecting loops that are of particular interest in the study of conformally invariant systems. Among other things related to these CLEs, we prove the invariance in distribution of their nested "full-plane" versions under the inversion $z \mapsto 1/z$.
We derive a shortcut stationary metric formula for generating imperfect fluid rotating solutions, in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates, from spherically symmetric static ones. We explore the properties of the curvature scalar and stress-energy tensor for all types of rotating regular solutions we can generate without restricting ourselves to specific examples of regular solutions (regular black holes or wormholes). We show through examples how it is generally possible to generate an imperfect fluid regular rotating solution via radial coordinate transformations. We derive rotating wormholes that are…
We consider the energy and bienergy functionals as variational problems on the set of Riemannian metrics and present a study of the biharmonic stress-energy tensor. This approach is then applied to characterise weak conformality of the Gauss map of a submanifold. Finally, working at the level of functionals, we recover a result of Weiner linking Willmore surfaces and pseudo-umbilicity.
We study unitary conformal field theories with a unique stress tensor and at least one higher-spin conserved current in d>3 dimensions. We prove that every such theory contains an infinite number of higher-spin conserved currents of arbitrarily high spin, and that Ward identities generated by the conserved charges of these currents imply that the correlators of the stress tensor and the conserved currents of the theory must coincide with one of the following three possibilities: a) a theory of n free bosons (for some integer n), b) a theory of n free fermions, or c) a theory of n (d-2)/2-forms…
A conformal restriction system is a commutative, associative, unital algebra equipped with a representation of the groupoid of univalent conformal maps on connected open sets of the Riemann sphere, and a family of linear functionals on subalgebras, satisfying a set of properties including conformal invariance and a type of restriction. This embodies some expected properties of expectation values in conformal loop ensembles CLE. In the context of conformal restriction systems, we study certain algebra elements associated with hypotrochoid simple curves (including the ellipse). These have the CL…
In this paper we derive the projectors to all irreducible SO(d) representations (traceless mixed-symmetry tensors) that appear in the partial wave decomposition of a conformal correlator of four stress-tensors in d dimensions. These projectors are given in a closed form for arbitrary length $l_1$ of the first row of the Young diagram. The appearance of Gegenbauer polynomials leads directly to recursion relations in $l_1$ for seed conformal blocks. Further results include a differential operator that generates the projectors to traceless mixed-symmetry tensors and the general normalization cons…
We study the structure of the Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) surfaces that are cut out as one explores a conformal loop-ensemble CLE$_{κ'}$ for $κ'$ in $(4,8)$ that is drawn on an independent $γ$-LQG surface for $γ^2=16/κ'$. The results are similar in flavor to the ones from our paper dealing with CLE$_κ$ for $κ$ in $(8/3,4)$, where the loops of the CLE are disjoint and simple. In particular, we encode the combined structure of the LQG surface and the CLE$_{κ'}$ in terms of stable growth-fragmentation trees or their variants, which also appear in the asymptotic study of peeling processes on d…
The conformal loop ensembles CLE(k), defined for k in [8/3, 8], are random collections of loops in a planar domain which are conjectured scaling limits of the O(n) loop models. We calculate the distribution of the conformal radii of the nested loops surrounding a deterministic point. Our results agree with predictions made by Cardy and Ziff and by Kenyon and Wilson for the O(n) model. We also compute the expectation dimension of the CLE(k) gasket, which consists of points not surrounded by any loop, to be 2-(8-k)(3k-8)/32k, which agrees with the fractal dimension given by Duplantier for the O(…
Conformal loop ensembles are random collections of loops in a simply connected domain, whose laws are characterized by a natural conformal invariance property. The set of points not surrounded by any CLE loop is a natural random and conformally invariant analog of the Sierpinski gasket or carpet. In the present paper, we derive a direct relationship between each CLE consisting of simple disjoint loops (CLE($κ$) with $κ$ between 8/3 and 4) and the corresponding CLE($κ'$) where $κ':=16/κ$, a CLE consisting of non-disjoint loops. This is the continuum analog of the Edwards-Sokal coupling (between…
The conformal loop ensemble $\operatorname {CLE}_κ$ with parameter $8/3<κ<8$ is the canonical conformally invariant measure on countably infinite collections of noncrossing loops in a simply connected domain. Given $κ$ and $ν$, we compute the almost-sure Hausdorff dimension of the set of points $z$ for which the number of CLE loops surrounding the disk of radius $\varepsilon$ centered at $z$ has asymptotic growth $ν\log (1/\varepsilon )$ as $\varepsilon \to0$. By extending these results to a setting in which the loops are given i.i.d. weights, we give a CLE-based treatment of the extremes of t…
