Pseudo-supersymmetric solutions of minimal $N=2$, $D=4$ de Sitter supergravity are classified using spinorial geometry techniques. We find three classes of solutions. The first class of solution consists of geometries which are fibrations over a 3-dimensional manifold equipped with a Gauduchon-Tod structure. The second class of solution is the cosmological Majumdar-Papapetrou solution of Kastor and Traschen, and the third corresponds to gravitational waves propagating in the Nariai cosmology.
We show that there exists a supersymmetric de Sitter background for the D=6, N=2, F(4) supergravity preserving the compact R-symmetry and gauging with respect to the conventional Anti de Sitter version of the theory. We construct the gauged matter coupled F(4) de Sitter supergravity explicitly and show that it contains ghosts in the vector sector.
We classify all pseudo-supersymmetric extremal near-horizon geometries in minimal five-dimensional de-Sitter supergravity. It is shown that the only such near-horizon geometry is the near-horizon geometry of the de-Sitter BMPV solution, and hence there are no regular extremal pseudo-supersymmetric asymptotically de-Sitter black rings.
We comment on the ubiquity of the so-called warped anti-de Sitter spacetimes in three-dimensional (2,0) supergravity theory. By using isometry-invariant tensors and simple counting, we prove their existence for arbitrary $(2,0)$ supergravity models suitably defined close to a minimal model. We also analyze their offshell supersymmetry and the supersymmetry of two geometric orbifolds.
BPS domain wall solutions of gauged supergravities are found, including those theories which have non-compact gauge groups. These include models that have both an unstable de Sitter solution and stable domain wall solutions.
We find 5D gauged supergravity theories exhibiting stable de Sitter vacua. These are the first examples of stable de Sitter vacua in higher-dimensional (D>4) supergravity. Non-compact gaugings with tensor multiplets and R-symmetry gauging seem to be the essential ingredients in these models. They are however not sufficient to guarantee stable de Sitter vacua, as we show by investigating several other models. The qualitative behaviour of the potential also seems to depend crucially on the geometry of the scalar manifold.
Supergravity theories at D=4 allow to formulate the Swampland de Sitter conjectures in the complex field space of scalar components of chiral multiplets. We formulate the de Sitter and refined de Sitter conjecture by using the Kähler invariant ${\cal G}$-function and explore a class of models in the Landscape/Swampland scenario which obey and/or violate such conjectures. Furthermore we give a new construction of single exponential potentials in supergravity. These depend on a chiral superfield with a Kähler potential parametrizing an SU(1,1)/U(1) geometry. We show that known de Sitter solutions in extended gauged supergravity theories are interrelated via a web of supersymmetry-breaking truncations. In particular, all N=8 models reduce to a subset of the N=4 possibilities. Furthermore, a different subset of the N=4 models can be truncated to stable de Sitter vacua in N=2 theories. In addition to relations between the known cases, we also find new (un)stable models.
We find extrema of the potential of matter couplings to N=2 supergravity that define de Sitter vacua and no tachyonic modes. There are three essential ingredients in our construction: namely non-abelian non-compact gaugings, de Roo-Wagemans rotation angles, and Fayet-Iliopoulos terms.
Two ways in which de Sitter space can arise in supergravity theories are discussed. In the first, it arises as a solution of a conventional supergravity, in which case it necessarily has no Killing spinors. For example, de Sitter space can arise as a solution of N=8 gauged supergravities in four or five dimensions. These lift to solutions of 11-dimensional supergravity or D=10 IIB supergravity which are warped products of de Sitter space and non-compact spaces of negative curvature. Electrically charged solutions breaking half of the supersymmetry in Anti-De Sitter four dimensional N=2 supergravity coupled to vector supermultiplets are constructed. These static black holes live in an asymptotic $AdS_4$ space-time. The Killing spinor, i. e., the spinor for supersymmetry variation is explicitly constructed for these solutions.
In the present talk I shall review the construction of N=2 supergravity models exhibiting stable de Sitter vacua. These solutions represent the first instance of stable backgrounds with positive cosmological constant in the framework of extended supergravities (N >=2). After briefly reviewing the role of de Sitter space--times in inflationary cosmology, I shall describe the main ingredients which were necessary for the construction of gauged N=2 supergravity models admitting stable solutions of this kind.
We study the general formulation of gauged supergravity in seven dimensions with sixteen supercharges keeping duality covariance by means of the embedding tensor formalism. We first classify all inequivalent duality orbits of consistent deformations. Secondly, we analyse the complete set of critical points in a systematic way. Interestingly, we find the first examples of stable de Sitter solutions within a theory with such a large amount of supersymmetry.
Typical de Sitter (dS) vacua of gauged supergravity correspond to saddle points of the potential and often the unstable mode runs into a singularity. We explore the possibility to obtain dS points where the unstable mode goes on both sides into a supersymmetric smooth vacuum. Within N=2 gauged supergravity coupled to the universal hypermultiplet, we have found a potential which has two supersymmetric minima (one of them can be flat) and these are connected by a de Sitter saddle point. The solutions of 10 and 11 dimensional supergravity that are warped products of de Sitter space with a non-compact `internal' space are investigated. A convenient form of the metric is found and it is shown that in each case the internal space is asymptotic to a cone over a product of spheres. A consistent truncation gives gauged supergravities with non-compact gauge groups. The BPS domain wall solutions of the non-compact gauged supergravities are lifted to warped solutions in 10 or 11 dimensions.
The complex linear Goldstino superfield was proposed in arXiv:1102.3042 for the cases of global and local four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry. Here we make use of this superfield to construct a supergravity action which is invariant under spontaneously broken local N=1 supersymmetry and has a positive cosmological constant for certain values of the parameters.
Solutions of five dimensional minimal de Sitter supergravity admitting Killing spinors are considered. It is shown that the "timelike'' solutions are determined in terms of a four dimensional hyper-Kahler torsion (HKT) manifold. If the HKT manifold is conformally hyper-Kahler the most general solution can be obtained from a sub-class of supersymmetric solutions of minimal N=2 ungauged supergravity, by means of a simple transformation. We construct consistent non-linear Kaluza Klein reduction ansatze for a subset of fields arising from the reduction of IIB* and M* theory on dS_5 x H^5 and dS_4 x AdS_7, respectively. These reductions yield four and five-dimensional de Sitter supergravities, albeit with wrong sign kinetic terms. We also demonstrate that the ansatze may be used to lift multi-centered de Sitter black hole solutions to ten and eleven dimensions. The lifted dS_5 black holes correspond to rotating E4-branes of IIB* theory.
We revisit the stringy construction of four-dimensional de-Sitter solutions using orientifolds O$8_{\pm}$, proposed by Córdova et al. arXiv:1911.04498. While the original analysis of the supergravity equations is largely numerical, we obtain semi-analytic solutions by treating the curvature as a perturbative parameter. At each order we verify that the (permissive) boundary conditions at the orientifolds are satisfied. Anti-de Sitter supergravity models are considered in three dimensions. Precise asymptotic conditions involving a chiral projection are given on the Rarita-Schwinger fields. Together with the known boundary conditions on the bosonic fields, these ensure that the asymptotic symmetry algebra is the superconformal algebra. The classical central charge is computed and found to be equal to the one of pure gravity. It is also indicated that the asymptotic degrees of freedom are described by 2D "induced supergravity" and that the boundary conditions "transmute" the non-vanishing components of the WZW …
We improve the heavy quark potential, extracted from the Wilson loop average in the Ads/CFT approach by taking the quantum fluctuation of the only radial coordinate of $Ads_5$ which is transverse to the world-sheet of the classical Nambu-Goto string in the static gauge, and obtain the universal L{ü}scher-Symanzik-Weisz/L{ü}scher term.
We put forward a unimodular $N=1, d=4$ anti-de Sitter supergravity theory off shell. This theory, where the Cosmological Constant does not couple to gravity, has a unique maximally supersymmetric classical vacuum which is Anti-de Sitter spacetime with radius given by the equation of motion of the auxiliary scalar field, ie, $S=\frac{3}{κL}$. However, we see that the non-supersymmetric classical vacua of the unimodular theory are Minkowski and de Sitter spacetimes as well as anti-de Sitter spacetime with radius $l\neq L$.
We obtain a four-dimensional supergravity with spontaneously broken supersymmetry allowing for de Sitter vacua by coupling a superspace action of minimal N=1, D=4 supergravity to a locally supersymmetric generalization of the Volkov-Akulov goldstino action describing the dynamics of a space-filling non-BPS 3-brane in N=1, D=4 superspace. The geometric structure of the null solutions of de Sitter D=5 gauged supergravity coupled to vector multiplets is investigated. These solutions are Kundt metrics, constructed from a one-parameter family of three dimensional Gauduchon-Tod base spaces. We give examples, including the near horizon geometries previously found in arxiv:hep-th/10122120. In addition, two special cases are considered in detail. In the first, we consider solutions for which the Gauduchon-Tod base space is the Berger sphere. In the second case we take the null 1-form Killing spinor bilinear to be recurrent, so that the…
We investigate the scalar potential of gauged N=4 supergravity with matter. The extremum in the SU(1,1)/U(1) scalars is obtained for an arbitrary number of matter multiplets. The constraints on the matter scalars are solved in terms of an explicit parametrisation of an SO(6,6+n) element. For the case of six matter multiplets we discuss both compact and noncompact gauge groups. In an example involving noncompact groups and four scalars we find a potential with an absolute minimum and a positive cosmological constant.
Recently, the complete action for an N=1 pure supergravity action in 4 dimensions that allows a positive, negative or zero cosmological constant has been constructed. The action is the generalization of a Volkov-Akulov action for the Goldstino coupled to supergravity. The construction uses a nilpotent multiplet. This paper is written in honour of Philippe Spindel. We find four-dimensional de Sitter compactifications of type IIA supergravity by directly solving the ten-dimensional equations of motion. In the simplest examples, the internal space has the topology of a circle times an Einstein manifold of negative curvature. An orientifold acts on the circle with two fixed loci, at which an O8$_-$ and an O8$_+$ plane sit. These orientifold planes are fully backreacted and localized. We test the robustness of the conditions required for the existence of (supersymmetric) warped flux anti-de Sitter, de Sitter, and Minkowski backgrounds in supergravity theories using as examples suitable foliations of anti-de Sitter spaces. We find that there are supersymmetric de Sitter solutions in supergravity theories including maximally supersymmetric ones in 10- and 11-dimensional supergravities. Moreover, warped flux Minkowski backgrounds can admit Killing spinors which are not Killing on the Minkowski subspace and therefore cannot be put in a factorized form.
We study the stability of vacua with spontaneously broken supersymmetry in N=2 supergravity theories with only hypermultiplets. Focusing on the projection of the scalar mass matrix along the sGoldstino directions, we are able to derive a universal upper bound on the lowest mass eigenvalue. This bound only depends on the gravitino mass and the cosmological constant, but not on the details of the quaternionic manifold spanned by the scalar fields. Comparing with the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound shows that metastability requires the cosmological constant to be smaller than a certain negative crit…
We obtain a general class of time-dependent, asymptotically de Sitter backgrounds which solve the first order bosonic equations that extremize the action for supergravity with gauged non-compact $R$-symmetry. These backgrounds correspond only to neutral fields with the correct sign of kinetic energy. In this note we study a massive IIA supergravity theory obtained in hep-th/9707139 by compactification of M-theory. We point out that de Sitter space in arbitrary dimensions arises naturally as the vacuum of this theory. This explicitly shows how de Sitter space can be embedded into eleven-dimensional supergravity. In addition we discuss the novel way in which this theory avoids various `no-go theorems' which assert that de Sitter space is not a consistent vacua of eleven-dimensional supergravity theory. We formulate a unimodular N=1, d=4 supergravity theory off shell. We see that the infinitesimal Grassmann parameters defining the unimodular supergravity transformations are constrained and show that the conmutator of two infinitesinal unimodular supergravity transformations closes on transverse diffeomorphisms, Lorentz transformations and unimodular supergravity transformations. Along the way, we also show that the linearized theory is a supersymmetric theory of gravitons and gravitinos. We test the conjectured relationship between N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions and IIB supergravity compactified on $AdS_5\times S_5$ by computing the two- and three-point functions of R-symmetry currents. We observe that the integral expressions describing the general three-point correlator on the supergravity side have a structure similar to one-loop triangle diagrams in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Aspects of d=4, N=4 superconformal U(N) gauge theory are studied at finite temperature. Utilizing dual description of large $N$ and strong coupling limit via Type IIB string theory compactification on Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter spacetime, we study correlations of Wilson-Polyakov loops and heavy quark potential thereof. We find that the heavy quark potential is Coulomb-like and has a finite range, as expected for gauge theory in high temperature, deconfinement phase. The potential exhibits finite temperature scaling consistent with underlying conformal invariance. We also study isolated heavy…
We construct the anti-de Sitter supergravity in three dimensions associated with the supergroup $SU(1,1|2)\times SU(1,1|2)$. The field content and the action are inferred using the fact that $AdS$ supergravity theories in three dimensions are Chern-Simons theories.
In this note we extend our work in a previous paper hep-th/9801038. We show here that various intersecting brane-like configurations can be found in the vacuum of $D=4, N=4$ supergravity with gauged R-symmetry group $SU(2)\times SU(2)$. These include intersections of domain-walls, strings and point-like objects. Some of these intersecting configurations preserve 1/2 and 1/4 of supersymmetry. We construct a simple class of N=2 gauged supergravity theories that admit metastable de Sitter vacua, generalizing the recent work done in the context of rigid supersymmetry. The setup involves one hypermultiplet and one vector multiplet spanning suitably curved quaternionic-Kahler and special-Kahler geometries, with an Abelian gauging based on a single triholomorphic isometry, but neither Fayet-Iliopoulos terms nor non-Abelian gauge symmetries. We show that one can uncover a Dine-Seiberg problem for de Sitter critical points in supergravity theories by utilizing the magnetic weak gravity conjecture. We present a large variety of N=2 gauged supergravity models that include vector multiplets and in all cases we find that the weak gravity conjecture threatens de Sitter. A common feature in all such examples is a degenerate mass matrix for the gravitini, which we therefore deem a swampland criterion for de Sitter critical points.
We consider classical type II supergravity with arbitrary fluxes, Dirichlet branes and orientifold planes and prove that a four-dimensional compactification of this theory can never correspond to a metastable de Sitter state.
A new class of metastable de Sitter vacua is presented and analyzed in N =1 supergravity and string theory with tunable (infinitesimally small) value of the cosmological constant. They are based on a gauged R-symmetry and the minimal spectrum contains a vector and a linear multiplet of the string dilaton or of a compactification modulus. In the minimum of the scalar potential supersymmetry is broken by an expectation value of both a D- and F-term.
We compute the imaginary part of scalar four-point functions in the AdS/CFT correspondence relevant to N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Unitarity of the AdS supergravity demands that the imaginary parts of the correlation functions factorize into products of lower-point functions. We include the exchange diagrams for scalars as well as gravitons and find explicit expressions for the imaginary parts of these correlators. In momentum space these expressions contain only rational functions and logarithms of the kinematic invariants, in such a manner that the correlator is not a free-field result. The…
We consider graviton scattering in maximal supergravity on Anti-de Sitter space (AdS) in $d+1$ dimensions for $d=3,4,\text{and $6$}$ with no extra compact spacetime factor. Holography suggests that this theory is dual to an exotic maximally supersymmetric conformal field theory (CFT) in $d$ dimensions whose only light single trace operator is the stress tensor. This contrasts with more standard cases like Type IIB string theory on $AdS_5\times S^5$ dual to $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills, where the CFT has light single trace operators for each Kaluza-Klein mode on $S^5$. De Sitter supergravity describes interaction of supergravity with general chiral and vector multiplets as well as one nilpotent chiral multiplet. The extra universal positive term in the potential due to the nilpotent multiplet, corresponding to the anti-D3 brane in string theory, supports de Sitter vacua in these supergravity models. In this letter we discuss de Sitter vacua in maximal gauged supergravity in 4 dimensions. We show that, using the newly deformed theories introduced in arxiv:1209.0760, we can obtain de Sitter vacua with arbitrarily flat tachyonic directions in the SO(4,4)c models.
We propose a supergravity model with a constrained curvature multiplet, which realizes the Starobinsky inflation and the de Sitter vacuum in the present universe simultaneously. Surprisingly, at the vacuum, the soft supersymmetry breaking scale for minimal supersymmetric standard model sector becomes the TeV scale, however, the gravitino mass scale becomes much higher than that of soft supersymmetry breaking. Such a hierarchical structure, which naturally avoids the gravitino problem, appears without introducing a new scale other than inflation scale.
We use a new mechanism for generating a Fayet-Iliopoulos term in supergravity, which is not associated to an R symmetry, to construct a semi-realistic theory of slow-roll inflation for a theory with the same Kähler potential and superpotential as the KKLT string background (without anti-D3 branes). In our model, supersymmetry must be broken at a high scale in a hidden sector to ensure that the cutoff of the effective field theory is above the Hubble scale of inflation. In this paper we review the appearance and utility of a nilpotent chiral multiplet in the context of supergravity, string theory and cosmology. Coupling a nilpotent chiral superfield to supergravity, one obtains what is called pure dS supergravity, a supergravity theory without scalar degrees of freedom that naturally has de Sitter (dS) solutions, and in which supersymmetry is non-linearly realized. Stable non-supersymmetric Anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacua of string theory are widely believed not to exist. In this letter, we analytically compute the full bosonic Kaluza-Klein spectrum around the ${\rm G_2}$-invariant non-supersymmetric $\textrm{AdS}_4$ solution of massive IIA supergravity, and show that it is perturbatively stable. We also provide evidence that six other non-supersymmetric $\textrm{AdS}_4$ solutions of massive IIA supergravity are perturbatively stable. We present a topological version of two dimensional dilaton supergravity. It is obtained by gauging an extension of the super-Poincaré algebra in two space-time dimensions. This algebra is obtained by an unconventional contraction of the super de Sitter algebra. Besides the generators of the super de Sitter algebra it has one more fermionic generator and two more bosonic generators one of them being a central charge. The gauging of this algebra is performed in the usual way. Unlike some proposals for a dilaton supergravity theory we obtain a model which is non-local in the gravitino field.

We study some aspects of Maldacena's large $N$ correspondence between N=4 superconformal gauge theory on D3-brane and maximal supergravity on AdS_5xS_5 by introducing macroscopic strings as heavy (anti)-quark probes. The macroscopic strings are semi-infinite Type IIB strings ending on D3-brane world-volume. We first study deformation and fluctuation of D3-brane when a macroscopic BPS string is attached. We continue the analysis of BPS bounds started in arXiv:1110.2688, extending it to the full class of N=2 gauged supergravity theories with arbitrary vector and hypermultiplets. We derive the general form of the asymptotic charges for asymptotically flat (M_4), anti-de Sitter (AdS_4), and magnetic anti-de Sitter (mAdS_4) spacetimes. Some particular examples from black hole physics are given to explicitly demonstrate how AdS and mAdS masses differ when solutions with non-trivial scalar profiles are considered.
It is challenging to construct explicit and controllable models that realize de Sitter solutions in string compactifications. This difficulty is the main motivation for the Refined de Sitter Conjecture and the Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture which forbid stable de Sitter solutions but allow metastable, unstable and rolling solutions in a theory consistent with quantum gravity. We present new anti-de Sitter black hole solutions of gauged N=8, SO(8) supergravity, which is the massless sector of the AdS_4\times S^7 vacuum of M-theory. By focusing on the U(1)^4 Cartan subgroup, we find non-extremal 1, 2, 3 and 4 charge solutions. In the extremal limit, they may preserve up to 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/8 of the supersymmetry, respectively. We determine the most general near-horizon geometry of a supersymmetric, asymptotically anti-de Sitter, black hole solution of five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity that admits two rotational symmetries. The near-horizon geometry is that of the supersymmetric, topologically spherical, black hole solution of Chong et al. This proves that regular supersymmetric anti-de Sitter black rings with two rotational symmetries do not exist in minimal supergravity.
