We investigate Bloch oscillations of interacting cold atoms in a mean-field framework. In general, atom-atom interaction causes dephasing and destroys Bloch oscillations. Here, we show that Bloch oscillations are persistent if the interaction is modulated harmonically with suitable frequency and phase. For other modulations, Bloch oscillations are rapidly damped. We explain this behavior in terms of collective coordinates whose Hamiltonian dynamics permits to predict a whole family of stable solutions. In order to describe also the unstable cases, we carry out a stability analysis for Bogoliubov excitations. Using Floquet theory, we are able to predict the unstable modes as well as their growth rate, found to be in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.
We prove the multi-band Bloch oscillation and Stark ladder in the $nk$ and site representation from the Floquet theorem. The proof is also possible from the equivalence between the Floquet system, Bloch oscillation, and the rotator with spin. We also exactly solve the periodically driven two level atom and two band Bloch oscillation in terms of Heun function.
We analyse Bloch oscillations (i.e., oscillations induced by a static force) of strongly interacting Bose atoms {\em beyond} the hard-core bosons model. It is shown that residual interactions between the atoms modulate Bloch oscillations, where the type of modulations depends on the magnitude of the static force.
The paper studies the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a 1D parabolic optical lattice, and excited by a sudden shift of the lattice center. Depending on the magnitude of the initial shift, the condensate undergoes either dipole or Bloch oscillations. The effects of dephasing and of atom-atom interactions on these oscillations are discussed.
We study the dynamics of few interacting bosons in a one-dimensional lattice with dc bias. In the absence of interactions the system displays single particle Bloch oscillations. For strong interaction the Bloch oscillation regime reemerges with fractional Bloch periods which are inversely proportional to the number of bosons clustered into a bound state. The interaction strength is affecting the oscillation amplitude. Excellent agreement is found between numerical data and a composite particle dynamics approach. For specific values of the interaction strength a particle will tunnel from the in…
We study the Bloch dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate of cold atoms by using the formalism of the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equation. Depending on the static force magnitudes the system is shown to exhibit two qualitatively different regimes of Bloch oscillations - exponential decay for the static force magnitude less than some critical value (defined by the condensate density) and quasiperiodic oscillations in the opposite case. The relation of these regimes to the onset of chaos in the system is discussed.
We show that Bloch oscillations of ultracold fermionic atoms in the periodic potential of an optical lattice can be used for a sensitive measurement of forces at the micrometer length scale, e.g. in the vicinity of dielectric surface. In particular, the proposed approach allows to perform a local and direct measurement of the Casimir-Polder force which is, for realistic experimental parameters, as large as 10^-4 gravity.
We report on the control of interaction-induced dephasing of Bloch oscillations for an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice under the influence of gravity. When tuning the strength of the interaction towards zero by means of a Feshbach resonance, the dephasing time is increased from a few to more than twenty thousand Bloch oscillation periods. We quantify the dephasing in terms of the width of the quasi-momentum distribution and measure its dependence on time for different values of the scattering length. Minimizing the dephasing allows us to realize a BEC-based atom interfero…
We investigate the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in a tilted one-dimensional periodic lattice within the mean-field (Gross-Pitaevskii) description. Unlike in the linear case the Bloch oscillations decay because of nonlinear dephasing. Pronounced revival phenomena are observed. These are analyzed in detail in terms of a simple integrable model constructed by an expansion in Wannier-Stark resonance states. We also briefly discuss the pulsed output of such systems for stronger static fields.
We investigate both experimentally and theoretically disorder induced damping of Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices. The spatially inhomogeneous force responsible for the damping is realised by a combination of a disordered optical and a magnetic gradient potential. We show that the inhomogeneity of this force results in a broadening of the quasimomentum spectrum, which in turn causes damping of the centre-of-mass oscillation. We quantitatively compare the obtained damping rates to the simulations using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our results are relevant fo…
We report on experiments studying transport properties of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice of spatial period $λ/2n$, where $n$ is an integer, realized with the dispersion of multiphoton Raman transitions. We observe Bloch oscillations, as a clear effect of quantum transport, in the sub-wavelength scale periodicity lattice. The unusually strong localisation of atoms is evident from the measured effective mass. Future prospects of the novel lattice structures are expected in the search for new quantum phases in tailored lattice structures up to quantum computing in optica…
We introduce a new method to achieve long lived Bloch oscillations and dynamical localization of matter wave gap solitons in optical lattices. The method is based on time dependent modulations of the nonlinearity which can be experimentally implemented by means of the Feshbach resonance technique. In particular, we show that the width of the wave packet is preserved if time modulations of the nonlinearity are taken proportional to the curvature of the linear band spectrum which for most typical experimental settings are well approximated by harmonic time modulations of proper frequencies.
Defects in tight-binding lattices generally destroy the onset of Bloch oscillations (BOs) and the periodic self-imaging of the wave packet due to the lack of an equally-spaced Wannier-Stark ladder spectrum. Here it is shown that localized and extended defects in the lattice can be engineered to be transparent for BOs. Such lattices are synthesized from the defect-free lattice by the technique of intertwining operators generally employed in supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The energy spectrum of the synthesized lattices differs from the Wannier-Stark ladder of the defect-free lattice because o…
Quantum dynamics of a charged particle in a 2D lattice subject to magnetic and electric fields is a rather complicated interplay between cyclotron oscillations (the case of vanishing electric field) and Bloch oscillations (zero magnetic field), details of which has not yet been completely understood. In the present work we suggest to study this problem by using cold atoms in optical lattices. We introduce a 1D model which can be easily realized in laboratory experiments with quasi 1D optical lattices and show that this model captures many features of the cyclotron-Bloch dynamics of the quantum…
We demonstrate the existence of Bloch oscillations of acoustic fields in sound propagation through a superlattice of water cavities and layers of methyl methacrylate. To obtain the acoustic equivalent of a Wannier-Stark ladder, we have employed a set of cavities with different thicknesses. Bloch oscillations are observed as time-resolved oscillations of transmission in a direct analogy to electronic Bloch oscillations in biased semiconductor superlattices. Moreover, for a particular gradient of cavity thicknesses, an overlap of two acoustic minibands occurs, which results in resonant Zener-lik…
Bloch oscillations (BO) in complex lattices with PT symmetry are theoretically investigated with specific reference to optical BO in photonic lattices with gain/loss regions. Novel dynamical phenomena with no counterpart in ordinary lattices, such as non-reciprocal BO related to violation of the Friedel's law of Bragg scattering in complex potentials, are highlighted.
It is shown that by properly designing the spatial dependence of the nonlinearity it is possible to induce long-living Bloch oscillations of a localized wavepacket in a periodic potential. The results are supported both by analytical and numerical investigations and are interpreted in terms of matter wave dynamics displaying dozens of oscillation periods without any visible distortion of the wave packet.
We examine the behavior of single photons at multiport devices and inquire if coherent effects are possible. In particular we study how single photons need to be manipulated in order to study coherent phenomena. We show that single photons need to be produced in W states which lead to vanishing mean amplitude but nonzero correlations between the inputs at different ports. Such correlations restore coherent effects with single photons. As a specific example we demonstrate Bloch oscillations with single photons and thus provide strict analog of Bloch oscillation of electrons.
We present a detailed analysis of the dynamics of Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates in disordered lattice potentials. Due to the disorder and the interparticle interactions these oscillations undergo a dephasing, reflected in a damping of the center of mass oscillations, which should be observable under realistic experimental conditions. The interplay between interactions and disorder is far from trivial, ranging from an interaction-enhanced damping due to modulational instability for strong interactions, to an interaction-reduced damping due to a dynamical screening of the disor…
We show that when photons in N-particle path entangled |N,0> + |0,N> state undergo Bloch oscillations, they exhibit a periodic transition between spatially bunched and antibunched states. The transition occurs even when the photons are well separated in space. We study the scaling of the bunching-antibunching period, and show it is proportional to 1/N.
We find the exact Bloch oscillations in zigzag arrays of curved optical waveguides under the influence of arbitrary long-range coupling. The curvature induces a linear transverse potential gradient in the equations of the light evolution. In the case of arrays with second-order coupling, steady states can be obtained as linear combinations of Bessel functions of integer index. The corresponding eigenvalues are equally spaced and form the well-known Wannier-Stark ladder, the spacing being independent of the second-order coupling. We also solve exactly the wave packet dynamics and compare it wit…
The paper presents results of numerical experiments simulating Bloch oscillations of solitons in a deformable molecular chain in a constant electric field. By the example of a homogeneous polynucleotide chain it is shown that the system under consideration can demonstrate complicated dynamical regimes when at the field intensities less than a certain critical value, a soliton as a whole exhibits oscillations, while at the field intensities exceeding the threshold, a soliton turns to a breather which oscillates. It is shown that the motion of a charge in a deformable chain is infinite as contra…
Using the Crank-Nicholson method, we study the evolution of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice and harmonic trap. The condensate is excited by displacing it from the center of the harmonic trap. The mean field plays an important role in the Bloch-like oscillations that occur after sufficiently large initial displacement. We find that a moderate mean field significantly suppresses the dispersion of the condensate in momentum space. When the mean field becomes large, soliton and vortex structures appear in the condensate wavefunction.
We exploit theoretically the occurrence and tunability of photonic Bloch oscillations (PBOs) in one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) containing nonlinear composites. Because of the enhanced third-order nonlinearity (Kerr type nonlinearity) of composites, photons undergo oscillations inside tilted photonic bands, which are achieved by the application of graded external pump electric fields on such PCs, varying along the direction perpendicular to the surface of layers. The tunability of PBOs (including amplitude and period) is readily achieved by changing the field gradient. With an appropri…
This work provides a convenient and powerful means towards the engineering of Floquet bands via Bloch oscillations, by adding a tilted linear potential to periodically driven lattice systems. The added linear field not only restricts the spreading of a time-evolving wavepacket but also, depending on the ratio between the Bloch oscillation frequency and the modulation frequency of the periodic driving, dramatically modifies the band profile and topology. Specifically, we consider a driven Aubry-André-Harper model as a working example, in the presence of a linear field. Almost flat Floquet bands…
Under a perfect periodic potential, the electric current density induced by a constant electric field may exhibit nontrivial oscillations, so-called Bloch oscillations, with an amplitude that remains nonzero in the large system size limit. Such oscillations have been well studied for nearly noninteracting particles and observed in experiments. In this work, we revisit Bloch oscillations in strongly interacting systems. By analyzing the spin-1/2 XXZ chain, which can be mapped to a model of spinless electrons, we demonstrate that the current density at special values of the anisotropy parameter …
