We describe some of the forms of freeness of group actions on noncommutative C*-algebras that have been used, with emphasis on actions of finite groups. We give some indications of their strengths, weaknesses, applications, and relationships to each other. The properties discussed include the Rokhlin property, K-theoretic freeness, the tracial Rokhlin property, pointwise outerness, saturation, hereditary saturation, and the requirement that the strong Connes spectrum be the entire dual.
We characterize semicircular distribution by the freeness of linear and quadratic forms in noncommutative random variables from a tracial $W^*$-probability space with relaxed moment conditions.
Let $Γ$ be a discrete group satisfying the approximation property (AP). Let $X$, $Y$ be $Γ$-spaces and $π\colon Y \to X$ be a proper factor map which is injective on the non-free part. We prove the one-to-one correspondence between intermediate ${\rm C}^\ast$-algebras of $C_0(X) \rtimes_r Γ\subset C_0(Y) \rtimes Γ$ and intermediate $Γ$-${\rm C}^\ast$-algebras of $C_0(X) \subset C_0(Y)$. This is a generalization of Suzuki's theorem that proves the statement for free actions.
It is shown that topological freeness of Rieffel's induced representation functor implies that any $C^*$-algebra generated by a faithful covariant representation of a Hilbert bimodule $X$ over a $C^*$-algebra $A$ is canonically isomorphic to the crossed product $A\rtimes_X \mathbb{Z}$. An ideal lattice description and a simplicity criterion for $A\rtimes_X \mathbb{Z}$ are established.
We define spectral freeness for actions of discrete groups on C*-algebras. We relate spectral freeness to other freeness conditions; an example result is that for an action of a finite group, spectral freeness is equivalent to strong pointwise outerness, and also to the condition that the strong Connes spectrum of the action of the integers generated by a nontrivial group element is always nontrivial. We then prove permanence results for reduced crossed products by exact spectrally free actions, for crossed products by arbitrary actions of the two element group, and for extensions, direct limi…
We study conditions that ensure uniqueness theorems of Cuntz-Krieger type for relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras $\mathcal{O}(J,X)$ associated to a $C^*$-correspondence $X$ over a $C^*$-algebra $A$. We give general sufficient conditions phrased in terms of a multivalued map $\widehat{X}$ acting on the spectrum $\widehat{A}$ of $A$. When $X(J)$ is of Type I we construct a directed graph dual to $X$ and prove a uniqueness theorem using this graph. When $X(J)$ is liminal, we show that topological freeness of this graph is equivalent to the uniqueness property for $\mathcal{O}(J,X)$, as well as to an…
We prove several results asserting that the action of a Banach-Lie group on Hilbert spaces of holomorphic sections of a holomorphic Hilbert space bundle over a complex Banach manifold is multiplicity free. These results require the existence of compatible antiholomorphic bundle maps and certain multiplicity freeness assumptions for stabilizer groups. For the group action on the base, the notion of an $(S,σ)$-weakly visible action (generalizing T.Koboyashi's visible actions) provides an effective way to express the assumptions in an economical fashion. In particular, we derive a version for gro…
To every $C^*$ correspondence over a $C^*$-algebra one can associate a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra generalizing crossed product constructions, graph $C^*$-algebras, and a host of other classes of operator algebras. Cuntz-Pimsner algebras come equipped with a `gauge action' by the circle group and its finite subgroups. For unital Cuntz-Pimsner algebras, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the gauge actions (by either the circle or its closed subgroups) to be free.
We generalise various non-triviality conditions for group actions to Fell bundles over discrete groups and prove several implications between them. We also study sufficient criteria for the reduced section C*-algebra C_r(B) of a Fell bundle (B_g) to be strongly purely infinite. If the unit fibre A=B_e contains an essential ideal that is separable or of Type I, then the Fell bundle is aperiodic if and only if it is topologically free. If, in addition, G=Z or G=Z/p for a square-free number p, then these equivalent conditions are satisfied if and only if A detects ideals in C_r(B), if and only if…
Pimsner introduced the C*-algebra O_X generated by a Hilbert bimodule X over a C*-algebra A. We look for additional conditions that X should satisfy in order to study simplicity and, more generally, the ideal structure of O_X when X is finite projective. We introduce two conditions: `(I)-freeness' and `(II)-freeness', stronger than the former, in analogy with [J. Cuntz, W. Krieger, Invent. Math. 56, 251-268] and [J. Cuntz, Invent. Math. 63, 25-40] respectively. (I)-freeness comprehend the case of the bimodules associated with an inclusion of simple C*-algebras with finite index, real or pseudo…
We consider the limiting distribution of $U_NA_NU_N^*$ and $B_N$ (and more general expressions), where $A_N$ and $B_N$ are $N \times N$ matrices with entries in a unital C$^*$-algebra $\mathcal B$ which have limiting $\mathcal B$-valued distributions as $N \to \infty$, and $U_N$ is a $N \times N$ Haar distributed quantum unitary random matrix with entries independent from $\mathcal B$. Under a boundedness assumption, we show that $U_NA_NU_N^*$ and $B_N$ are asymptotically free with amalgamation over $\mathcal B$. Moreover, this also holds in the stronger infinitesimal sense of Belinschi-Shlyak…
We introduce and systematically study the notion of Rokhlin dimension (with and without commuting towers) for compact group actions on $C^*$-algebras. This notion generalizes the one introduced by Hirshberg, Winter and Zacharias for finite groups, and contains the Rokhlin property as the zero dimensional case. We show, by means of an example, that commuting towers cannot always be arranged, even in the absence of $K$-theoretic obstructions. For a compact Lie group action on a compact Hausdorff space, freeness is equivalent to finite Rokhlin dimension of the induced action. We compare the notio…
A countable family of $*$-commuting surjective, non-injective local homeomorphisms of a compact Hausdorff space $X$ gives rise to an action $θ$ of a countably generated, free abelian monoid $P$. For such a triple $(X,P,θ)$, which we call an irreversible $*$-commutative dynamical system, we construct a universal $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{O}[X,P,θ]$. Within this setting we show that the following four conditions are equivalent: $(X,P,θ)$ is topologically free, $C(X) \subset \mathcal{O}[X,P,θ]$ has the ideal intersection property, the natural representation of $\mathcal{O}[X,P,θ]$ on $\ell^2(X)$ is…
In this paper, we consider the following question and variants thereof: given $\mathbf D:=\big(a_{1;i}\otimes\cdots\otimes a_{K;i}:i\in I\big)$, a collection of elementary tensor non-commutative random variables in the tensor product of probability spaces $(\mathcal A_1\otimes\cdots\otimes\mathcal A_K,ϕ_1\otimes\cdots\otimesϕ_K)$, when is $\mathbf D$ $*$-free? (See Section 1.2 for a precise formulation of this problem.) Settling whether or not freeness occurs in tensor products is a recurring problem in operator algebras, and the following two examples provide a natural motivation for the abov…
We introduce a generalisation of Condition (K) to finitely separated graphs and show that it is equivalent to essential freeness of the associated partial action as well as the exchange property of any of the associated tame algebras. As a consequence, we can show that any tame separated graph algebra with the exchange property is separative.
We study an extension of Bernstein's theorem to the setting of quantum groups. For a d-tuple of free, identically distributed random variables we consider a problem of preservation of freeness under the action of a quantum subset of the free orthogonal quantum group. For a subset not contained in the hyperoctahedral quantum group we prove that preservation of freeness characterizes Wigner's semicircle law. We show that freeness is always preserved if the quantum subset is contained in the hyperoctahedral quantum group. We provide examples of quantum subsets which show that our result is an ext…
We investigate possible generalizations of the de Finetti theorem to bi-free probability. We first introduce a twisted action of the quantum permutation groups corresponding to the combinatorics of bi-freeness. We then study properties of families of pairs of variables which are invariant under this action, both in the bi-noncommutative setting and in the usual noncommutative setting. We do not have a completely satisfying analogue of the de Finetti theorem, but we have partial results leading the way. We end with suggestions concerning the symmetries of a potential notion of n-freeness.
To a large class of graphs of groups we associate a C*-algebra universal for generators and relations. We show that this C*-algebra is stably isomorphic to the crossed product induced from the action of the fundamental group of the graph of groups on the boundary of its Bass-Serre tree. We characterise when this action is minimal, and find a sufficient condition under which it is locally contractive. In the case of generalised Baumslag-Solitar graphs of groups (graphs of groups in which every group is infinite cyclic) we also characterise topological freeness of this action. We are then able t…
We provide a systematic and in-depth study of compact group actions with the Rokhlin property. It is show that the Rokhlin property is generic in some cases of interest; the case of totally disconnected groups being the most satisfactory one. One of our main results asserts that the inclusion of the fixed point algebra induces an order-embedding on K-theory, and that it has a splitting whenever it is restricted to finitely generated subgroups. We develop new results in the context of equivariant semiprojectivity to study actions with the Rokhlin property. For example, we characterize when the …
Using Voiculescu's notion of a matricial microstate we introduce fractal dimensions and entropies for finite sets of selfadjoint operators in a tracial von Neumann algebra. We show that they possess properties similar to their classical predecessors. We relate the new quantities to free entropy and free entropy dimension and show that a modified version of free Hausdorff dimension is an algebraic invariant. We compute the free Hausdorff dimension in the cases where the set generates a finite dimensional algebra or where the set consists of a single selfadjoint. We show that the free Hausdorff …
We show that outer approximately represenbtable actions of a finite cyclic group on UCT Kirchberg algebras satisfy a certain quasi-freeness type property if the corresponding crossed products satisfy the UCT and absorb a suitable UHF algebra tensorially. More concretely, we prove that for such an action there exists an inverse semigroup of homogeneous partial isometries that generates the ambient C*-algebra and whose idempotent semilattice generates a Cartan subalgebra. We prove a similar result for actions of finite cyclic groups with the Rokhlin property on UCT Kirchberg algebras absorbing a…
Let F be a field, G a finite group, and Map(G,F) the Hopf algebra of all set-theoretic maps G->F. If E is a finite field extension of F and G is its Galois group, the extension is Galois if and only if the canonical map resulting from viewing E as a Map(G,F)-comodule is an isomorphism. Similarly, a finite covering space is regular if and only if the analogous canonical map is an isomorphism. In this paper we extend this point of view to actions of compact quantum groups on unital C*-algebras. We prove that such an action is free if and only if the canonical map (obtained using the underlying H…
A collection of partial isometries whose range and initial projections satisfy a specified set of conditions often gives rise to a partial representation of a group. The C*-algebra generated by the partial isometries is thus a quotient of the universal C*-algebra for partial representations of the group, from which it inherits a crossed product structure, of an abelian C*-algebra by a partial action of the group. Questions of faithfulness of representations, simplicity, and ideal structure of these C*-algebras can then be addressed in a unified manner from within the theory of partial actions.…
Let $G$ be a finite group. Noncommutative geometry of unital $G$-algebras is studied. A geometric structure is determined by a spectral triple on the crossed product algebra associated with the group action. This structure is to be viewed as a representative of a noncommutative orbifold. Based on a study of classical orbifold groupoids, a Morita equivalence for the crossed product spectral triples is developed. Noncommutative orbifolds are Morita equivalence classes of the crossed product spectral triples. As a special case of this Morita theory one can study freeness of the $G$-action on the …
We define the decomposition property for partial actions of discrete groups on $C^*$-algebras. Decomposable partial systems appear naturally in practice, and many commonly occurring partial actions can be decomposed into partial actions with the decomposition property. For instance, any partial action of a finite group is an iterated extension of decomposable systems. Partial actions with the decomposition property are always globalizable and amenable, regardless of the acting group, and their globalization can be explicitly described in terms of certain global sub-systems. A direct computatio…
