The construction of massless Majorana fermions with chiral Yukawa couplings on the lattice is considered. We find topological obstructions tightly linked to those underlying the Nielsen-Ninomiya no-go theorem. In contradistinction to chiral fermions the obstructions originate only from the combination of the Dirac action and the Yukawa term. These findings are used to construct a chirally invariant lattice action. We also show that the path integral of this theory is given by the Pfaffian of the corresponding Dirac operator. As an application of the approach set-up here we construct a CP-invariant lattice action of a chiral gauge theory, based on a lattice adaptation of charge conjugation and parity transformation in the continuum.

CP invariance of chiral gauge theories and Majorana-Yukawa couplings on the lattice

The construction of CP-invariant lattice chiral gauge theories and the construction of lattice Majorana fermions with chiral Yukawa couplings is subject to topological obstructions. In the present work we suggest lattice extensions of charge and parity transformation for Weyl fermions. This enables us to construct lattice chiral gauge theories that are CP invariant. For the construction of Majorana-Yukawa couplings, we discuss two models with symplectic Majorana fermions: a model with two symplectic doublets, and one with an auxiliary doublet.

Lattice chiral symmetry, CP-violation and Majorana fermions

A brief summary of lattice fermions defined by the general Ginsparg-Wilson algebra is first given. It is then shown that those general class of fermion operators have a conflict with CP invariance in chiral gauge theory and with the definition of Majorana fermions in the presence of chiral-symmetric Yukawa couplings. The same conclusion holds for the domain-wall fermion also.

A Wilson-Majorana Regularization for Lattice Chiral Gauge Theories

We discuss the regularization of chiral gauge theories on the lattice introducing only physical degrees of freedom. This is obtained by writing the Wilson term in a Majorana form, at the expense of the U(1) symmetry related to fermion number conservation. The idea of restoring chiral invariance in the continuum by introducing a properly chosen set of counterterms to be added to the tree level action is checked against one-loop perturbative calculations.

Lattice fermions with Majorana couplings

We analyse stability of almost massless Dirac mode in gauge models with boundary (domain wall) fermions, and consider the possibility of decoupling one of its chiral component by giving it a Majorana mass of the order of the inverse lattice spacing. We argue that the chiral spectrum in such models is always uncharged, so they can be implemented for defining the Weyl fermions only in the real representation of the gauge group, for instance, in SUSY models.

Exact Chiral Invariance at Finite Density on Lattice

A new lattice action is proposed for the overlap Dirac matrix with nonzero chemical potential. It is shown to preserve the full chiral invariance for all values of lattice spacing exactly. Domain wall fermions with Majorana couplings

We examine the lattice boundary formulation of chiral fermions with either an explicit Majorana mass or a Higgs-Majorana coupling introduced on one of the boundaries. We demonstrate that the low-lying spectrum of the models with an explicit Majorana mass of the order of an inverse lattice spacing is chiral at tree level. Chiral Invariance and Species Doublers in Generic Fermion Models on the Lattice

Discussions are made on the structures of chirally invariant lattice actions without any restriction of hermiticity. With the help of the Ward-Takahashi identity a general conclusion can be derived that there must be species doublers in any chirally invariant model provided that the model is chosen as well-regularized, that is, there is no singularity in the propagator after introducing fermion mass on the lattice. Various examples are discussed to pick up better models defined in the sense that the number of species doubler is smaller than that of the naive Dirac action.

Gauge Anomaly associated with the Majorana Fermion in $8k+1$ dimensions

Using an elementary method, we show that an odd number of Majorana fermions in $8k+1$ dimensions suffer from a gauge anomaly that is analogous to the Witten global gauge anomaly. This anomaly cannot be removed without sacrificing the perturbative gauge invariance. Our construction of higher-dimensional examples ($k geq1$) makes use of the SO(8) instanton on $S^8$.

Abelian chiral gauge theories on the lattice with exact gauge invariance

It is shown that U(1) chiral gauge theories with anomaly-free multiplets of Weyl fermions can be put on the lattice without breaking the gauge invariance or violating any other fundamental principle. The Ginsparg-Wilson relation plays a key role in this construction, which is non-perturbative and includes all topological sectors of the theory in finite volume. In particular, the cancellation of the gauge anomaly and the absence of global topological obstructions can be established on the basis of this relation and the lattice symmetries alone.

Overlap formulation of Majorana--Weyl fermions

An overlap method for regularizing Majorana--Weyl fermions interacting with gauge fields is presented. A mod(2) index is introduced in relation to the anomalous violation of a discrete global chiral symmetry. Global obstructions to gauge-invariance in chiral gauge theory on the lattice

It is shown that certain global obstructions to gauge-invariance in chiral gauge theory, described in the continuum by Alvarez-Gaume and Ginsparg, are exactly reproduced on the lattice in the Overlap formulation at small non-zero lattice spacing (i.e. close to the classical continuum limit). As a consequence, the continuum anomaly cancellation condition $d_R^{abc}=0$ is seen to be a necessary (although not necessarily sufficient) condition for anomaly cancellation on the lattice in the Overlap formulation.
