The eigen-frequencies of the axial w-modes of oscillating neutron stars are studied using the continued fraction method with an Equation of State (EOS) partially constrained by the recent terrestrial nuclear laboratory data. It is shown that the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$ affects significantly both the frequencies and the damping times of these modes. Besides confirming the previously found universal behavior of the mass-scaled eigen-frequencies as functions of the compactness of neutron stars, we explored several alternative universal scaling functions. Moreover, the $w_{II}$-mode is found to exist only for neutron stars having a compactness of $M/R\geq 0.1078$ independent of the EOS used.
We discuss the dependence of the pulsation frequencies of the axial quasi-normal modes of a nonrotating neutron star upon the equation of state describing the star interior. The continued fraction method has been used to compute the complex frequencies for a set of equations of state based on different physical assumptions and spanning a wide range of stiffness. The numerical results show that the detection of axial gravitational waves would allow to discriminate between the models underlying the different equation of states, thus providing relevant information on both the structure of neutron…
Significant progress has been made in recent years in constraining the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy using terrestrial nuclear laboratory data. Around and below the nuclear matter saturation density, the experimental constraints start to merge in a relatively narrow region. At supra-saturation densities, there are, however, still large uncertainties. After summarizing the latest experimental constraints on the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy, we highlight a few recent studies examining imprints of nuclear symmetry energy on the binding energy, energy release durin…
Significant progress has been made in recent years in constraining nuclear symmetry energy at and below the saturation density of nuclear matter using data from both terrestrial nuclear experiments and astrophysical observations. However, many interesting questions remain to be studied especially at supra-saturation densities. In this lecture note, after a brief summary of the currently available constraints on nuclear symmetry energy near the saturation density we first discuss the relationship between the symmetry energy and the isopin and momentum dependence of the single-nucleon potential …
How does nature hold together protons and neutrons to form the wide variety of complex nuclei in the universe? Describing many-nucleon systems from the fundamental theory of quantum chromodynamics has been the greatest challenge in answering this question. The chiral effective field theory description of the nuclear force now makes this possible but requires certain parameters that are not uniquely determined. Defining the nuclear force needs identification of observables sensitive to the different parametrizations. From a measurement of proton elastic scattering on $^{10}$C at TRIUMF and ab i…
We examine further corrections to the time component of the axial vector coupling constant in a nuclear medium. The dominant correction is that of exchange currents. The corrections we examine make the remaining discrepancy worse.
Background: The nuclear symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$ encodes information about the energy necessary to make nuclear systems more neutron-rich. While its slope parameter L at the saturation density $ρ_0$ of nuclear matter has been relatively well constrained by recent astrophysical observations and terrestrial nuclear experiments, its curvature $K_{\rm{sym}}$ characterizing the $E_{sym}(ρ)$ around $2ρ_0$ remains largely unconstrained. Over 520 calculations for $E_{sym}(ρ)$ using various nuclear theories and interactions in the literature have predicted several significantly different $K_{\rm{sy…
Background: The density of most nuclei is constant in the central region and is smoothly decreasing at the surface. A depletion in the central part of the nuclear density can have nuclear structure effects leading to the formation of "bubble" nuclei. However, probing the density profile of the nuclear interior is, in general, very challenging. Purpose: The aim of this paper is to investigate the nuclear bubble structure, with nucleon-nucleus scattering, and quantify the effect that has on the nuclear surface profile. Method: We employed high-energy nucleon-nucleus scattering under the aegis of…
Extending previous work we study the constraints of QCD sum rules on mass and width of light vector and axial-vector mesons in vacuum and in a medium with finite nuclear density. For the latter case especially the effect of nuclear pions leading to vector-axial-vector mixing is included in the analysis.
The model, introduced in a previous paper, for the description of the octupole and quadrupole degrees of freedom in conditions close to the axial symmetry, is applied to situations of shape phase transitions where the quadrupole amplitude can reach zero. The transitional nuclei 224,226Ra and 224Th are discussed in the frame of this model. Their level schemes can be reasonably accounted for assuming a square-well potential in two dimensions. Electromagnetic transition amplitudes are also evaluated and compared with existing experimental data.
The dynamics of nuclear collective motion is investigated in the case of reflection-asymmetric shapes. The model is based on a new parameterization of the octupole and quadrupole degrees of freedom, valid for nuclei close to the axial symmetry. Amplitudes of oscillation in other degrees of freedom different from the axial ones are assumed to be small, but not frozen to zero. The case of nuclei which already possess a permanent quadrupole deformation is discussed in some more detail and a simple solution is obtained at the critical point of the phase transition between harmonic octupole oscilla…

Applying an equation of state (EOS) with its symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) contribution and low-density symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$ constrained by heavy-ion reaction data, we calculate the dimensionless tidal deformability $Λ$ of neutron stars in coalescing binary systems. Corresponding to the partially constrained EOS that previously predicted a radius of 11.5 km $\leq R_{1.4} \leq$ 13.6 km for canonical neutron-star configurations, $Λ$ is found to be in the range of 292 $\leqΛ_{1.4}\leq$ 680, consistent with the very recent observation of the GW170817 event. We investigate the effect of th…
Cross sections for neutron capture in the range of unresolved resonances are predicted for more than 140 spin-0 target nuclei with A > 50. Allowing the breaking of spherical and axial symmetry in nearly all these nuclei a combined parameterization for both, level density and photon strength is obtained which employs a surprisingly small number of parameters only. The strength functions used are based on a global fit to IVGDR shapes by the sum of three Lorentzians. They are based on theoretical predictions for the A-dependence of pole energies and spreading widths and add up to the TRK sum rule…
Although most nuclear spectroscopy as well as atomic hyperfine structure data do not deliver accurate information on nuclear axiality the ad-hoc assumption of symmetry about one axis found widespread use in nuclear model calculations. In the theoretical interpretation of nuclear properties as well as in the analysis of experimental data triaxiality was considered - if at all - only for some, often exotic, nuclides. A breaking of axial symmetry combined to a spin-independent moment of inertia results in a surprisingly simple heuristic triaxial parametrization of the yrast sequence in all heavy …
We consider the counter-term describing isoscalar axial two-body currents in the nucleon-nucleon interaction, L1A, in the effective field theory approach. We determine this quantity using the solar neutrino data. We investigate the variation of L1A when different sets of data are used.
The important role played by chiral symmetry and axial anomaly in QCD in nuclear physics is reviewed. Some recent topics on possible chiral restoration in hot and/or dense matter are picked up. We also discuss so called {\em effective} restoration of chiral anomaly hot and/or dense matter, as may be seen in a character change of $η'$ meson.
Starting from the axial heavy meson exchange currents, constructed earlier in conjunction with the Bethe--Salpeter equation, we first present the axial $ρ$--, $ω$-- and $a_1$ meson exchange Feynman amplitudes that satisfy the partial conservation of the axial current. Employing these amplitudes, we derive the corresponding weak axial heavy meson exchange currents in the leading order in the 1/M expansion ($M$ is the nucleon mass), suitable for the nuclear physics calculations beyond the threshold energies and with wave functions obtained by solving the Schrödinger equation with one--boson exch…
Neutrino nuclear responses associated with medium momentum transfer of q=20-80 MeV for astro neutrinos and double beta decays were studied by using charge exchange reactions on Te128 and Te130. Gamow-Teller and spin dipole nuclear matrix elements are found to be reduced with respect to the pnQRPA matrix elements by the coefficient of around 0.35. The reduction is discussed in terms of the quenching of axial vector coupling (g_A).
We calculate shell-model matrix elements of the axial-charge exchange current operators that have been obtained up to the next-to-leading order from heavy-fermion chiral perturbation theory. It is found that loop corrections to the soft one-pion-exchange contribution are small (around 10 \%) and have no significant dependence on the nuclear mass number or on the valence-nucleon orbits. These results render further support to the chiral-filtering conjecture.
We present the complete derivation of the nuclear axial charge and current operators as well as the pseudoscalar operators to fourth order in the chiral expansion relative to the dominant one-body contribution using the method of unitary transformation. We demonstrate that the unitary ambiguity in the resulting operators can be eliminated by the requirement of renormalizability and by matching of the pion-pole contributions to the nuclear forces. We give expressions for the renormalized single-, two- and three-nucleon contributions to the charge and current operators and pseudoscalar operators…
Two-nucleon axial charge and current operators are derived in chiral effective field theory up to one loop. The derivation is based on time-ordered perturbation theory, and accounts for cancellations between the contributions of irreducible diagrams and the contributions due to non-static corrections from energy denominators of reducible diagrams. Ultraviolet divergencies associated with the loop corrections are isolated in dimensional regularization. The resulting axial current is finite and conserved in the chiral limit, while the axial charge requires renormalization. A complete set of cont…
We have studied the effect of free space nucleon radius on the nuclear matter and slowly rotating neutron star properties within a relativistic mean field model with the inclusion of omega-rho mixing nonlinear term. We use the same density dependent radius as in our previous work. However, in the present work we utilize the parameter sets with more proper symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) predictions for a number of different nucleon radii. To this end, the isoscalar parameters in each parameter set and the cutoff parameter $β$ are adjusted by fitting the corresponding SNM properties at sub-satur…
We show the necessity of two-nucleon axial currents and associated pion emission/ absorption operators for the partial conservation of the axial current (PCAC) nuclear matrix elements with arbitrary nuclear dynamics described by a nonrelativistic Schroedinger equation. As examples we construct such nonrelativistic axial two-body currents in the linear- and heterotic (g_A = 1.26) sigma models, with an optional isoscalar vector (omega) meson exchange. The nuclear matrix elements obey PCAC only if the nuclear wave functions used in the calculation are solutions to the Schroedinger equation with t…
The effect of mixing of the vector and axial vector correlation functions in the nuclear medium arising from the interaction of nuclear pions with corresponding interpolating currents is considered. It is shown that the mass difference between $ρ$ and $a_1$ meson gets smaller with the increase of the nuclear density reflecting the phenomena of partial restoration of chiral symmetry whereas the absolute values of meson masses may both decrease and increase in nuclear medium depending on the model used for the phenomenological spectral density.
The nuclear symmetry energy plays a key role in determining the equation of state of dense, neutron-rich matter, which governs the properties of both terrestrial nuclear matter as well as astrophysical neutron stars. A recent measurement of the neutron skin thickness from the PREX collaboration has lead to new constraints on the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy, L, which can be directly compared to inferences from gravitational-wave observations of the first binary neutron star merger inspiral, GW170817 In this paper, we explore a new regime for potentially constraining the slope, L, of th…
New hidden particles could potentially be emitted and discovered in rare nuclear transitions. In this work we investigate the production of hidden vector bosons with primarily axial couplings to light quarks in nuclear transitions, and we apply our results to the recent anomaly seen in $^8$Be decays. The relevant matrix elements for $^8{\rm Be}^*(1^+) \rightarrow ^8{\rm Be} (0^+)$ transitions are calculated using ${\it ab \, initio}$ methods with inter-nucleon forces derived from chiral effective field theory and the in-medium similarity renormalization group. We find that the emission of a li…
In this work we shall investigate the mass modifications of scalar mesons $\left( D_{0}, B_{0}\right)$,vector mesons $\left( D^{\ast}, B^{\ast}\right)$ and axial-vector mesons $\left(D_{1}, B_{1}\right)$ at finite density and temperature of the nuclear medium. The above mesons are modified in the nuclear medium through themodification of quark and gluon condensates. We shall find the medium modification of quark and gluon condensates within chiral SU(3) model through the medium modification of scalar-isoscalar fields $σ$ and $ζ$ at finite density and temperature. These medium modified quark an…
Using a chirally invariant effective Lagrangian, we calculate the density and isospin dependences of the in-medium axial coupling, $g_A^*$, in spatially uniform matter present in core collapse supernovae and neutron stars. The quenching of $g_A^*$ with density in matter with different proton fractions is found to be similar. However, our results suggest that the quenching of the nucleon's $g_A^*$ in matter with hyperons is likely to be significantly greater than in matter with nucleons only.
The in-medium property of the axial-vector coupling constant $g_A$ in nuclei and dense baryonic matter, a long standing problem in nuclear physics, is reformulated in terms of the recently constructed scale-invariant hidden local symmetric ($bs$HLS) Lagrangian that encompasses the physics of baryon density ranging from nuclear matter $n_0$ to that of massive compact stars, $\sim 6n_0$. It is shown that unlike the pion decay constant $f_π$ that slides with the vacuum change induced by, and dropping with, increasing density, the axial-current constant $g_A$ should remain more or less unaffected …
We study the modification of the nucleon axial form factor in nuclear matter. The internal quark substructure of the nucleon is self-consistently described by the quark meson coupling model. We find that the axial form factor of the bound nucleon is quenched considerably from that of the free nucleon. The axial vector coupling constant is reduced by roughly 10% at normal nuclear matter density and the axial form factor varies within 8% for moderate momentum transfer.
Axial breathing modes are studied within the nuclear energy--density--functional theory to discuss the modification of the nucleon effective mass produced beyond the mean--field approximation. This analysis is peformed with the subtracted second random--phase--approximation (SSRPA) model applied to two nuclei, $^{48}$Ca and $^{90}$Zr. Analyzing the centroid energies of axial breathing modes obtained with the mean--field--based random--phase approximation and with the beyond--mean--field SSRPA model, we estimate the modification (enhancement) of the effective mass which is induced beyond the me…
By incorporating hidden scale symmetry and hidden local symmetry in nuclear effective field theory, combined with double soft-pion theorem, we predict that the Gamow-Teller operator coming from the space component of the axial current should remain unaffected by the QCD vacuum change caused by baryonic density whereas the first forbidden beta transition operator coming from the time component should be strongly enhanced. While the latter has been confirmed since some time, the former is given a support by a powerful recent {\it ab initio} quantum Monte Carlo calculation in light nuclei, also c…
We present a microscopic calculation of the 6He beta-decay into the ground state of 6Li. To this end, we use chiral perturbation theory at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order to describe the nuclear weak-currents. The nuclear wave functions are derived from the J-matrix inverse scattering nucleon-nucleon potential (JISP), and the Schroedinger equation is solved using the hyperspherical-harmonics expansion. Our calculation brings the theoretical decay-rate within 3% of the measured one. This success is attributed to the use of chiral-perturbation-theory based mesonic currents, whose contribut…
Weak-interaction currents are studied in a recently proposed effective field theory of the nuclear many-body problem. The Lorentz-invariant effective field theory contains nucleons, pions, isoscalar scalar ($σ$) and vector ($ω$) fields, and isovector vector ($ρ$) fields. The theory exhibits a nonlinear realization of $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ chiral symmetry and has three desirable features: it uses the same degrees of freedom to describe the axial-vector current and the strong-interaction dynamics, it satisfies the symmetries of the underlying theory of quantum chromodynamics, and its paramete…
We investigate meson and nucleon dynamics at finite baryon density and temperature by coupling the nucleon field and the omega meson to the three-flavor linear sigma model and calculate hadronic properties around the nuclear liquid-gas transition. We apply the functional renormalization group method, and find that mesonic fluctuations increase the strength of the coefficient of the $U_A(1)$ breaking determinant operator as a function of the chiral condensate. As a consequence, we find that the actual value of the anomaly increases discontinuously at the first order nuclear liquid-gas transitio…
Charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering is studied in the quasielastic region with the KIDS (Korea-IBS-Daegu-SKKU) nuclear energy density functional. We focus on the uncertainties stemming from the axial mass and the in-medium effective mass of the nucleon. Comparing the result of theory to the state-of-the-art data from MiniBooNE, T2K, and MINER$ν$A, we constrain the axial mass and the effective mass that are compatible with the data. We find that the total cross section is insensitive to the effective mass, so the axial mass could be determined independently of the uncertainty in the eff…
The basic parameters for calculations of radiative neutron capture , photon strength functions and nuclear level densities near the neutron separation energy are determined based on experimental data without an ad-hoc assumption about axial symmetry - at variance to previous analysis. Surprisingly few global fit parameters are needed in addition to information on nuclear deformation, taken from Hartree Fock Bogolyubov (HFB) calculations with the Gogny force, and the generator coordinator method (GCM) assures properly defined angular momentum. For a large number of nuclei the GDR shapes and the…
The axial-vector coupling constant in nuclear medium is systematically studied using chiral perturbation theory. For normal nuclear matter, the first non-trivial corrections are estimated based on the independent particle approximation taking into account nuclear correlations in nuclear medium. The one-pion-exchange (OPE) two-body interactions turn out to enhance the coupling constant by $δg_A/g_A\simeq (0.09 \sim 0.15)$. The role of the four-nucleon contact interaction, whose low-energy constants are yet to be determined, is analyzed in connection with the empirical quenching factor of $δg_A/…
We observed the impact of finite magnetic field on the in-medium mass and decay constant of isospin averaged vector $D^*(D^{*^+},D^{*^0})$ and axial-vector $D_1(D^+_1, D^0_1)$ mesons. The quark and gluon condensates of the nuclear medium at finite magnetic field, temperature, isospin asymmetry, and density have been obtained by the meson exchange scalar fields within the chiral SU(3) model. The medium attributes modify the scalar and vector density of nuclear medium and this variation reflects in the in-medium mass and decay constant of spin 1 $D$ mesons. We calculate these observables by comp…
Complete flavour decompositions of the scalar, axial and tensor charges of the proton, deuteron, diproton and $^3$He at SU(3)-symmetric values of the quark masses corresponding to a pion mass $m_π\sim806$ MeV are determined using lattice QCD. At the physical quark masses, the scalar charges constrain mean-field models of nuclei and the low-energy interactions of nuclei with potential dark matter candidates. The axial and tensor charges of nuclei constrain their spin content, integrated transversity and the quark contributions to their electric dipole moments. External fields are used to direct…
As a first step towards a realistic phenomenological description of vector and axial-vector mesons in nuclear matter, we calculate the spectral functions of the $ρ$ and the $a_1$ meson in a chiral baryon-meson model as a low-energy effective realization of QCD, taking into account the effects of fluctuations from scalar mesons, nucleons, and vector mesons within the Functional Renormalization Group (FRG) approach. The phase diagram of the effective hadronic theory exhibits a nuclear liquid-gas phase transition as well as a chiral phase transition at a higher baryon-chemical potential. The in-m…
Chiral perturbation theory in heavy-fermion formalism is developed for meson-exchange currents in nuclei and applied to nuclear axial- charge transitions. Calculation is performed to the next-to-leading order in chiral expansion which involves graphs up to one loop. The result turns out to be very simple. The previously conjectured notion of "chiral filter mechanism" in the time component of the nuclear axial current and the space component of the nuclear electromagnetic current is verified to that order. As a consequence, the phenomenologically observed soft-pion dominance in the nuclear proc…
The model, introduced in a previous paper, for the description of the octupole and quadrupole degrees of freedom in conditions close to the axial symmetry, is used to describe the negative-parity band based on the first octupole vibrational state in nuclei close to the critical point of the U(5) to SU(3) phase transition. The situation of 150Nd and 152Sm is discussed in detail. The positive parity levels of these nuclei, and also the in-band E2 transitions, are reasonably accounted for by the X(5) model. With simple assumptions on the nature of the octupole vibrations, it is possible to descri…
An increasing number of experimental data indicates the breaking of axial symmetry in many heavy nuclei already in the valley of stability: Multiple Coulomb excitation analysed in a rotation invariant way, gamma transition rates and energies in odd nuclei, mass predictions, the splitting of Giant Resonances (GR), the collective enhancement of nuclear level densities and Maxwellian averaged neutron capture cross sections. For the interpretation of these experimental observations the axial symmetry breaking shows up in nearly all heavy nuclei as predicted by Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) calcula…
Describing the hyperonic and quark phases of neutron stars with an isospin- and momentum-dependent effective interaction for the baryon octet and the MIT bag model, respectively, and using the Gibbs conditions to construct the mixed phase, we study the energy release due to the hadron-quark phase transition. Moreover, the frequency and damping time of the first axial $w$-mode of gravitational waves are studied for both hyperonic and hybrid stars. We find that the energy release is much more sensitive to the bag constant than the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Also, the freq…
We consider the response of the QCD ground state at finite baryon density to a strong magnetic field B. We point out the dominant role played by the coupling of neutral Goldstone bosons, such as pi^0, to the magnetic field via the axial triangle anomaly. We show that, in vacuum, above a value of B ~ m_pi^2/e, a metastable object appears - the pi^0 domain wall. Because of the axial anomaly, the wall carries a baryon number surface density proportional to B. As a result, for B ~ 10^{19} G a stack of parallel pi^0 domain walls is energetically more favorable than nuclear matter at the same densit…
Charged-current cross sections are calculated for quasielastic neutrino and antineutrino scattering using a relativistic meson-nucleon model. We examine how nuclear-structure effects, such as relativistic random-phase-approximation (RPA) corrections and momentum-dependent nucleon self-energies, influence the extraction of the axial form factor of the nucleon. RPA corrections are important only at low-momentum transfers. In contrast, the momentum dependence of the relativistic self-energies changes appreciably the value of the axial-mass parameter, $M_A$, extracted from dipole fits to the axial…
The generator coordinate method (GCM) is an important tool of choice for modeling large-amplitude collective motion in atomic nuclei. The computational complexity of the GCM increases rapidly with the number of collective coordinates. It imposes a strong restriction on the applicability of the method. In this work, we propose a subspace-reduction algorithm that employs optimal statistical ML models as surrogates for exact quantum-number projection calculations for norm and Hamiltonian kernels. The model space of the original GCM is reduced to a subspace relevant for nuclear low energy spectra …
Calculations of the axial-vector component to the radiative correction for superallowed Fermi $0^+ \rightarrow 0^+$ nuclear beta decay are here modified with quenched rather than free-nucleon coupling constants for the axial-vector and electromagnetic interactions with nucleons. The result increases the deduced value of $V_{ud}$ but does not restore unitarity in the CKM matrix.
In this review the quenching of the weak axial-vector coupling strength, $g_{\rm A}$, is discussed in nuclear $β$ and double-$β$ decays. On one hand, the nuclear-medium and nuclear many-body effects are separated, and on the other hand the quenching is discussed from the points of view of different many-body methods and different $β$-decay and double-$β$-decay processes. Both the historical background and the present status are reviewed and contrasted against each other. The theoretical considerations are tied to performed and planned measurements, and possible new measurements are urged, when…
The projected shell model is used to study the multi-quasiparticle and collective excitations of 178Hf. With an axially symmetric basis, the spin-16 isomer at 2.4 MeV appears to be well separated in energy/spin space from other configurations. However, projected energy surface calculations suggest that 178Hf has significant softness to axially asymmetric shapes, which can strongly modify the level distribution. The implications for photodeexitation of the isomer are discussed.
The charged-current double differential neutrino cross section, measured by the MiniBooNE Collaboration, has been analyzed using a microscopical model that accounts for, among other nuclear effects, long range nuclear (RPA) correlations and multinucleon scattering. We find that MiniBooNE data are fully compatible with the world average of the nucleon axial mass in contrast with several previous analyses which have suggested an anomalously large value. We also discuss the reliability of the algorithm used to estimate the neutrino energy.
In this article, we review the status of the calculation of nuclear currents within chiral effective field theory. After formal discussion of the unitary transformation technique and its application to nuclear currents we will give all available expressions for vector, axial-vector currents. Vector and axial-vector currents will be discussed up to order $Q$ with leading-order contribution starting at order $Q^{-3}$. Pseudoscalar and scalar currents will be discussed up to order $Q^0$ with leading-order contribution starting at order $Q^{-4}$. This is a complete set of expressions in next-to-ne…
