Progress in the study of the peripheral nuclear interactions in $^{14}N$ dissociation at $2.1A GeV$ in nuclear emulsion is outlined. The leading role of the multiple fragmentations in the most peripheral nucleus interactions is discussed. The production of unusual states, for which a regrouping of nucleons beyond the $α$-particle clustering is needed, is identified for this channel.
The role played by the heaviest fragment in partitions of multifragmenting hot nuclei is emphasized. Its size/charge distribution (mean value, fluctuations and shape) gives information on properties of fragmenting nuclei and on the associated phase transition.
Recent advancement on the knowledge of multifragmentation and phase transition for hot nuclei is reported. It concerns i) the influence of radial collective energy on fragment partitions and the derivation of general properties of partitions in presence of such a collective energy, ii) a better knowledge of freeze-out properties obtained by means of a simulation based on all the available experimental information and iii) the quantitative study of the bimodal behaviour of the heaviest fragment charge distribution for fragmenting hot heavy quasi-projectiles which allows, for the first time, to …
Experimental data on multi-fragmentation of residual krypton nuclei created in the interactions of the krypton nuclei with photoemulsion nuclei at the energy of 0.9 GeV per nucleon are presented in a comparison with the analogous data on fragmentation of gold residual nuclei at the energy of 10.7 GeV/nucleon. It is shown for the first time that there are two regimes of nuclear multifragmentation: the former is when less than one-half of nucleons of projectile nucleus are knocked out, the latter is when more than one-half of nucleons are knocked out. Residual nuclei with closed masses created a…
Recent important progress on the knowledge of multifragmentation and phase transition for hot nuclei, thanks to the high detection quality of the INDRA array, is reported. It concerns i) the radial collective energies involved in hot fragmenting nuclei/sources produced in central and semi- peripheral collisions and their influence on the observed fragment partitions, ii) a better knowledge of freeze-out properties obtained by means of a simulation based on all the available experimental information and iii) the quantitative study of the bimodal behaviour of the heaviest fragment distribution f…
This review article is focused on the tremendous progress realized during the last fifteen years in the understanding of multifragmentation and its relationship to the liquid-gas phase diagram of nuclei and nuclear matter. The explosion of the whole nucleus, early predicted by Bohr [N. Bohr, Nature 137 (1936) 351], is a very complex and rich subject which continues to fascinate nuclear physicists as well as theoreticians who extend the thermodynamics of phase transitions to finite systems.
The use of emulsions for studying nuclear clustering in light nucleus fragmentation processes at energies higher than 1A GeV is discussed. New results on the topologies of relativistic Li-7 and B-10 nucleus fragmentation in peripheral interactions are given. A program of research of the cluster structure in stable and radioactive nuclei is suggested.
The fragment production in multifragmentation of finite nuclei is affected by the critical temperature of nuclear matter. We show that this temperature can be determined on the basis of the statistical multifragmentation model (SMM) by analyzing the evolution of fragment distributions with the excitation energy. This method can reveal a decrease of the critical temperature that, e.g., is expected for neutron-rich matter. The influence of isospin on fragment distributions is also discussed.
Thermal multifragmentation of hot nuclei is interpreted as the nuclear liquid-fog phase transition inside the spinodal region. The experimental data for p(8.1GeV) + Au collisions are analyzed within the framework of the statistical multifragmentation model (SMM) for the events with emission of at least two IMFs. It is found that the partition of hot nuclei is specified after expansion to a volume equal to Vt = (2.6+-0.3) Vo, with Vo as the volume at normal density. However, the freeze-out volume is found to be twice as large: Vf = (5+-1) Vo.
Thermal multifragmentation of hot nuclei is interpreted as the nuclear liquid--fog phase transition deep inside the spinodal region. The experimental data for p(8.1GeV) + Au collisions are analyzed. It is concluded that the decay process of hot nuclei is characterized by two size parameters: transition state and freeze-out volumes. The similarity between dynamics of fragmentation and ordinary fission is discussed. The IMF emission time is related to the mean rupture time at the multi-scission point, which corresponds to the kinetic freeze-out configuration.
Multifragmentation reactions are dominating processes for the decomposition of highly excited nuclei leading to the fragment production in heavy-ion collisions. At high energy reactions strange particles are abundantly produced. We present a novel development of the Statistical multifragmentation model (SMM) as its generalization for the hyper-matter which is formed after the hyperon capture. In this way, it is possible to describe its disintegration into normal and hyper-nuclei. Some properties of hyper-nuclei and their binding energies can be determined from the comparison of the isotope yie…
The analysis of experimental production cross-sections of intermediate-mass fragments (IMF) of several nuclear reactions at relativistic energy, measured at the FRS, GSI Darmstadt, revealed a very strong and complex even-odd staggering. The origin of this effect is related to the condensation process of hot nuclei while cooling down by evaporation. The characteristics of the staggering correlate strongly with the lowest particle separation energy of the final experimentally observed nuclei, but not with the binding energy. The study confirms the important role of the de-excitation process in m…
In nuclear reactions induced by hadrons and ions of high energies, nuclei can disintegrate into many fragments during a short time (~100 fm/c). This phenomenon known as nuclear multifragmentation was under intensive investigation last 20 years. It was established that multifragmentation is an universal process taking place in all reactions when the excitation energy transferred to nuclei is high enough, more than 3 MeV per nucleon, independently on the initial dynamical stage of the reactions. Very known compound nucleus decay processes (sequential evaporation and fission), which are usual for…
Multiple emission of intermediate-mass fragments has been studied for the collisions of p, $^4$He and $^{12}$C on Au with the $4π$ setup FASA. The mean IMF multiplicities (for the events with at least one IMF) are saturating at the value of $2.2\pm0.2$ for the incident energies above 6 GeV. The observed IMF multiplicities cannot be described in a two-stage scenario, a fast cascade followed by a statistical multifragmentation. Agreement with the measured IMF multiplicities is obtained by introducing an intermediate phase and modifying empirically the excitation energies and masses of the remnan…
For nuclei in five different mass regions the critical temperatures, at which the surface tension vanishes, are derived from information on the liquid branch of the coexistence curve. These critical temperatures increase with increasing mass and, for higher masses are well above recently reported critical temperatures obtained from Fisher Droplet model and percolation model analyses. However, for the lowest mass region nuclei, with 30<A<60, this analysis indicates that nucleonic matter has been produced essentially at the critical point, characterized by Tc and rho_c.
Theoretical calculations are performed to investigate the angular momentum and Coulomb effects on fragmentation and multifragmentation in peripheral heavy-ion collisions at Fermi energies. Inhomogeneous distributions of hot fragments in the freeze-out volume are taken into account by microcanonical Markov chain calculations within the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM). Including an angular momentum and a long-range Coulomb interaction between projectile and target residues leads to new features in the statistical fragmentation picture. In this case, one can obtain specific correlation…
Multifragmentation is the dominant decay mode of heavy nuclear systems with excitation energies near their binding energies and is characterized by a multiple production of nuclear fragments with intermediate mass. At relativistic bombarding energies, multifragmentation may be observed in peripheral collisions of heavy symmetric systems or more central collisions of mass asymmetric systems. The decay properties indicate a high degree of equilibration and are well described by statistical multifragmentation models. Multifragmentation has been linked to the liquid-gas phase transition in finite …
We give an overview of results and prospects of nuclear clustering studies on the grounds of the observations of interactions of light stable and radioactive nuclei with an initial energy above 1 A GeV in nuclear emulsions. Thank to the best spatial resolution and the full solid angle acceptance provided by nuclear emulsions, such an approach allows one to obtain unique and evident observations reecting cluster-like features in light nuclear structures. New results on dissociation of $^7$Be in very peripheral interactions with emulsion nuclei are presented. The importance of this research for …
Thermal multifragmentation of hot nuclei is interpreted as the nuclear liquid-fog phase transition. The charge distributions of the intermediate mass fragments produced in p(3.6 GeV) + Au and p(8.1 GeV) + Au collisions are analyzed within the statistical multifragmentation model with the critical temperature for the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition Tc as a free parameter. The analysis presented here provides strong support for a value of Tc > 15 MeV.
Isospin properties of fragments measured in multifragmentation of 136Xe and 124Xe projectiles in mid-peripheral collisions with a lead target at 1 A GeV were studied within the statistical approach describing the liquid-gas nuclear phase transition. By analyzing the isoscaling phenomenon and the mean N-over-Z ratio of the fragments with Z=10-13 we have concluded that the symmetry energy of hot fragments produced in multifragment environment at subnuclear densities at high temperatures decreases in comparison with cold nuclei.
Some characteristics of midvelocity emissions in semiperipheral heavy-ion collisions at Fermi energies are discussed in the framework of a multifragmenting scenario. We report on binary dissipative collisions of 93Nb + 93Nb at 38AMeV in which we measured an abundant emission of particles and fragments not originated from the usual evaporative decay of hot primary fragments. We checked the compatibility of these emissions with the multifragmentation of a source which forms in the overlap region. One can fairly well reproduce the data assuming a hot and dilute source, possibly more n-rich than t…
Recent analyses of multifragmentation in terms of Fisher's model and the related construction of a phase diagram brings forth the problem of the true existence of the vapor phase and the meaning of its associated pressure. Our analysis shows that a thermal emission picture is equivalent to a Fisher-like equilibrium description which avoids the problem of the vapor and explains the recently observed Boltzmann-like distribution of the emission times. In this picture a simple Fermi gas thermometric relation is naturally justified. Low energy compound nucleus emission of intermediate mass fragment…
Nuclear multifragmentation is an important phenomenon, the study of which can throw light on reaction mechanism in heavy ion collisions at intermediate and high energies. Based on statistical and dynamical model studies, this thesis is concentrated mainly on, the following three aspects of nuclear multifragmentation reactions namely (i) production of exotic nuclei which are normally not available in the laboratory (ii) nuclear symmetry energy from heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies and (iii) Nuclear liquid-gas phase transition. In addition to these equivalence of statistical ensembl…
We point out similarity of thermodynamic conditions reached in intermediate energy nuclear collisions and in supernova explosions. We show that a statistical approach, which has been previously applied for nuclear multifragmentation reactions, can be very useful for description of electro-neutral stellar matter. Then properties of hot unstable nuclei extracted from analysis of multifragmentation data can be used for construction of a realistic equation of state of supernova matter.
A sample of `single-source' events, compatible with the multifragmentation of very heavy fused systems, are isolated among well-measured 155Gd+natU 36AMeV reactions by examining the evolution of the kinematics of fragments with Z>=5 as a function of the dissipated energy and loss of memory of the entrance channel. Single-source events are found to be the result of very central collisions. Such central collisions may also lead to multiple fragment emission due to the decay of excited projectile- and target-like nuclei and so-called `neck' emission, and for this reason the isolation of single-so…
Isotopic distributions for light particles and intermediate mass fragments have been measured for 112Sn+112Sn, 112Sn+124Sn, 124Sn+112Sn and 124Sn+124Sn collisions at E/A=50 MeV. Isotope, isotone and isobar yield ratios are utilized to obtain an estimate of the isotopic composition of the gas phase, i.e., the relative abundance of free neutrons and protons at breakup. Within the context of equilibrium calculations, these analyses indicate that the gas phase is enriched in neutrons relative to the liquid phase represented by bound nuclei.
Isoscaling and isobaric yield ratio parameters are compared from canonical and grand canonical ensembles when applied to multifragmentation of finite nuclei. Source dependence of isoscaling parameters and source and isospin dependence of isobaric yield ratio parameters are examined in the framework of the canonical and the grand canonical models. It is found that as the nucleus fragments more, results from both the ensembles converge and observables calculated from the canonical ensemble coincide more with those obtained from the formulae derived using the grand canonical ensemble.
The process of nuclear multifragmentation has been implemented, together with evaporation and fission channels of the disintegration of excited remnants in nucleus-nucleus collisions using percolation theory and the intranuclear cascade model. Colliding nuclei are treated as face--centered--cubic lattices with nucleons occupying the nodes of the lattice. The site--bond percolation model is used. The code can be applied for calculation of the fragmentation of nuclei in spallation and multifragmentation reactions.
We present a brief overview of nuclear multifragmentation reaction. Basic formalism of canonical thermodynamical model based on equilibrium statistical mechanics is described. This model is used to calculate basic observables of nuclear multifragmentation like mass distribution, fragment multiplicity, isotopic distribution and isoscaling. Extension of canonical thermodynamical model to a projectile fragmentation model is outlined. Application of the projectile fragmentation model for calculating average number of intermediate mass fragments and the average size of largest cluster at different …
The data on investigation of inelastic interactions of $16^O$ nuclei with a proton at 3.25 A GeV/c momentum by the bubble chamber method are presented. The separate characteristics as fragments isotopic composition and as topo-logical cross sections of fragmentation channels are given. The processes of light fragments formation and breakup of $16^O$ nucleus on multicharge fragments have been investigated. The comparison of experimental data with the calculations by statistical multifragmentation model was conducted.
In highly dissipative collisions between heavy ions, the optimal conditions to investigate different de-excitation channels of hot nuclei such as evaporation, fission or multifragmentation are well known. One crucial issue remains the excitation energy region where fission gives way to multifragmentation. In this paper, the onset of multi-fragment exit channels is investigated in terms of sequential fission. For the first time, the dynamical approach based on solving Langevin transport equations in multidimensional collective coordinate space is used to follow the de-excitation of highly excit…
This paper presents part of an internal LANL Progress Report on completion of the "S" and "G" versions of the improved Cascade-Exciton Model (CEM03.01) and the Los Alamos Quark-Gluon String Model (LAQGSM.03.01) codes. The "S" versions consider fragmentation of compound nuclei produced after the preequilibrium stage of reactions for excitation energies above 2A MeV using the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM) by Botvina et al. ("S" stands for SMM), while the "G" versions describe evaporation/fission stages of reactions using the fission-like binary-decay model GEMINI of Charity et al. (…
Clustering is a relatively widespread phenomena which takes on many guises across the nuclear landscape. Selected topics concerning the study of halo systems and clustering in light, neutron-rich nuclei are discussed here through illustrative examples taken from the Be isotopic chain.
We point out that during the supernova II type explosion the thermodynamical condition of stellar matter between the protoneutron star and the shock front corresponds to the nuclear liquid-gas phase coexistence region, which can be investigated in nuclear multifragmentation reactions. We have demonstrated, that neutron-rich hot heavy nuclei can be produced in this region. The production of these nuclei may influence dynamics of the explosion and contribute to the synthesis of heavy elements.
Status and prospects of nuclear clustering studies by dissociation of relativistic nuclei in nuclear track emulsion are presented. The unstable $^{8}$Be and $^{9}$B nuclei are identified in dissociation of the isotopes $^{9}$Be, $^{10}$B, $^{10}$C and $^{11}$C, and the Hoyle state in the cases $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O. On this ground searching for the Hoyle state and more complex $α$-particle states in the dissociation of the heavier nuclei is suggested. A detailed study of a low-density baryonic matter arising in dissociation of the heaviest nuclei is forthcoming long-term problem. An analysis o…
The fragmentation of quasi-projectiles from the nuclear reaction 40Ca + 12C at 25 MeV/nucleon was used to produce alpha-emission sources. From a careful selection of these sources provided by a complete detection and from comparisons with models of sequential and simultaneous decays, strong indications in favour of $α$-particle clustering in excited 16O, 20Ne and 24}Mg are reported.
A great many observables seen in intermediate energy heavy ion collisions can be explained on the basis of statistical equilibrium. Calculations based on statistical equilibrium can be implemented in microcanonical ensemble (energy and number of particles in the system are kept fixed), canonical ensemble (temperature and number of particles are kept fixed) or grand canonical ensemble (fixed temperature and a variable number of particles but with an assigned average). This paper deals with calculations with canonical ensembles. A recursive relation developed recently allows calculations with ar…
The fragment yields from the multifragmentation of gold, lanthanum and krypton nuclei obtained by the EOS Collaboration are examined in terms of Fisher's droplet formalism modifed to account for Coulomb energy. The critical exponents sigma and tau and the surface energy coefficient c0 are obtained. Estimates are made of the pressure-temperature and temperature-density coexistence curves of finite neutral nuclear matter as well as the location of the critical point.
The dissociation features in nuclear track emulsion of $^9$Be, $^{9,10}$C, and $^{12}$N nuclei of 1.2 A GeV energy are presented. The data presented for the nucleus $^9$Be can be considered as evidence that there is a core in its structure in the form of 0$^+$ and 2$^+$ states of the $^8$Be nucleus having roughly equal weights. Events of coherent dissociation $^9$C$\rightarrow 3^3$He associated with the rearrangement of the nucleons outside the $α$-clustering are identified. A pattern of the charge fragment topology in the dissociation of $^{10}$C and $^{12}$N nuclei is obtained for the first …
Recent studies of clustering in light nuclei with an initial energy above 1 A GeV in nuclear treack emulsion are overviewed. The results of investigations of the relativistic $^9$Be nuclei fragmentation in emulsion, which entails the production of He fragments, are presented. It is shown that most precise angular measurements provided by this technique play a crucial role in the restoration of the excitation spectrum of the $α$ particle sysytem. In peripheral interactions $^9$Be nuclei are dissociated practically totally through the 0$^+$ and 2$^+$ states of the $^8$Be nucleus. The results of …
The production mechanism of highly excited nuclei in the Fermi energy domain is investigated. A phenomenological approach, based on the exciton model, is used for the description of pre-equilibrium emission. A model of deep inelastic transfer is employed for the peripheral collisions in the post-pre-equilibrium stage. An approach to describe more central collisions is proposed. A geometric overlap formula is employed in a way suitable for given energy domain. A simple geometric approach describing the interaction of participant and spectator zones is used to determine the incomplete fusion cha…
We have demonstrated that the isospin of nuclei influences the fragment production during the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition. We analyzed the behavior of the critical exponent tau with the excitation energy and its dependence on the critical temperature. Relative yields of fragments were classified with respect to the mass number of the fragments in the transition region. In this way, we have demonstrated that nuclear multifragmentat…

Reactions of nuclear multifragmentation of excited finite nuclei can be interpreted as manifestation of the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition. During this process the matter at subnuclear density clusterizes into hot primary fragments, which are located in the vicinity of other nuclear species. In recent experiments there were found evidences that the symmetry and surface energies of primary fragments change considerably as compared to isolated cold or low-excited nuclei. The new modified properties of primary fragments should be taken into account during their secondary de-excitation.
What is the origin of nuclear clustering and how does it emerge from the nuclear interaction? While there is ample experimental evidence for this phenomenon, its theoretical characterization directly from nucleons as degrees of freedom remains a challenge, making it difficult to improve nuclear forces using clustering observables. In this work, a simple ratio of energies based on effective scale arguments is proposed to assess the quality of nuclear forces on alpha clustering (${ {}^{4}\text{He} }$) in bound and narrow ground-state nuclei. The proposed clustering ratio is parameter-free and co…
The relativistic invariant approach is applied to analyzing the 3.3 A GeV $^{22}$Ne fragmentation in a nuclear track emulsion. New results on few-body dissociations have been obtained from the emulsion exposures to 2.1 A GeV $^{14}$N and 1.2 A GeV $^{9}$Be nuclei. It can be asserted that the use of the invariant approach is an effective means of obtaining conclusions about the behavior of systems involving a few He nuclei at a relative energy close to 1 MeV per nucleon. The first observations of fragmentation of 1.2 A GeV $^{8}$B and $^{9}$C nuclei in emulsion are described. The presented resu…
The N/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at the GSI Schwerionen Synchrotron (SIS). Stable and radioactive Sn and La beams with an incident energy of 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. For the interpretation of the data, calculations with the statistical multifragmentation model for a properly chosen ensemble of excited sources were performed. The parameters of the ensemble, representing the variety of excited spectator nuclei expected in a participant-…
In the present paper, experimental observations of the multifragmentation processes of light relativistic nuclei carried out by means of emulsions are reviewed. Events of the type of "white" stars in which the dissociation of relativistic nuclei is not accompanied by the production of mesons and the target-nucleus fragments are considered. A distinctive feature of the charge topology in the dissociation of the Ne, Mg, Si, and S nuclei is an almost total suppression of the binary splitting of nuclei to fragments with charges higher than 2. The growth of the nuclear fragmentation degree is revea…

The connection between molecular resonance phenomena in light heavy-ion collisions, alpha-clustering and extremely deformed states in light $α$-like nuclei is discussed. For example, the superdeformed bands recently discovered in light N=Z nuclei such as $^{36}$Ar, $^{40}$Ca, $^{48}$Cr, and $^{56}$Ni by $γ$-ray spectroscopy may have a special link with resonant states in collisions with $α$-like nuclei. The resonant reactions involving identical bosons such as $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C, $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O $^{24}$Mg+$^{24}$Mg and $^{28}$Si+$^{28}$Si are of interest. For instance, a butterfly mode of vib…
Starting from experimental studies on alpha-clustering in excited self-conjugate nuclei (from $^{16}$O to $^{28}$Si), temperature and density conditions for such a clustering are determined. Measured temperatures have been found in the range of 5.5 - 6.0 MeV whereas density values of 0.3 - 0.4 times the saturation density are deduced, i.e., 0.046 to 0.062 $fm^{-3}$. Such a density domain is also predicted by constrained self-consistent mean field calculations. These results constitute a benchmark for alpha clustering from self-conjugate nuclei in relation to descriptions of stellar evolution a…
The clustering of nucleons in nuclei is a widespread but elusive phenomenon for study. Here, we wish to highlight the variety of theoretical approaches, and demonstrate how they are mutually supportive and complementary. On the experimental side, we describe recent advances in the study of the classic cluster nucleus 24Mg. Also, recent studies of clustering in nuclei approaching the neutron drip line are described. In the region near N/Z=2, both theory and experiment now suggest that multi-centre cluster structure is important, in particular for the very neutron rich beryllium isotopes.

It is noted that in single j-shell calculations certain odd-spin states in even--even nuclei lie in a narrow energy band; likewise certain states in odd--odd nuclei.
I present an ab initio calculation of the spectrum of carbon-12, including also the famous Hoyle state. Its structure is discussed and a new interpretation of clustering in nuclear physics is given.
A theoretical approach was developed to describe secondary particle emission in heavy ion collisions, with special regards to pre-equilibrium α-particle production. Griffin's model of non-equilibrium processes is used to account for the first stage of the compound system formation, while a Monte Carlo statistical approach was used to describe the further decay from a hot source at thermal equilibrium. The probabilities of neutron, proton and α-particle emission have been evaluated for both the equilibrium and pre-equilibrium stages of the process. Fission and γ-ray emission competition were al…
We measure cross sections for residual nuclide formation in the mass range 6 < A < 97 caused by bombardment with protons and deuterons of 3.65 GeV/nucleon energy of enriched tin isotopes (112-Sn, 118-Sn, 120-Sn, 124-Sn). The experimental data are compared with calculations by the codes FLUKA, LAHET, CEM03, and LAQGSM03. Scaling behavior is observed for the whole mass region of residual nuclei, showing a possible multifragmentation mechanism for the formation of light products (6 < A < 31). Our analysis of the isoscaling dependence also shows a possible contribution of multifragmentation to the…
Photon-nuclear reaction in a transport model frame, namely an Extended Quantum Molecular Dynamics (EQMD) model, has been realised at the photon energy of 70-140 MeV in the quasi-deuteron (QD) regime. For an important application, we pay a special focus on photonuclear reactions of $^{12}$C($γ$,np)$^{10}$B where $^{12}$C is considered as different configurations including $α$-clustering. Obvious differences for some observables have been observed among different configurations, which can be attributed to spatial-momentum correlation of a neutron-proton pair inside nucleus, and therefore it give…
The determination of absolute branching ratios for high-energy states in light nuclei is an important and useful tool for probing the underlying nuclear structure of individual resonances: for example, in establishing the tendency of an excited state towards $α$-cluster structure. Difficulty arises in measuring these branching ratios due to similarities in available decay channels, such as ($\mathbf{^{18}}$O,$\mathbf{n}$) and ($\mathbf{^{18}}$O,$\mathbf{2n}$), as well as differences in geometric efficiencies due to population of bound excited levels in daughter nuclei. Methods are presented us…
