Heat capacity, resistivity, and magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm bulk superconductivity in single crystals of BaIr$_2$P$_2$ (T$_c$=2.1K) and BaRh$_2$P$_2$ (T$_c$ = 1.0 K). These compounds form in the ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ (122) structure so they are isostructural to both the Ni and Fe pnictides but not isoelectronic to either of them. This illustrates the importance of structure for the occurrence of superconductivity in the 122 pnictides. Additionally, a comparison between these and other ternary phosphide superconductors suggests that the lack of interlayer $P-P$ bonding favors superconductivity. These stoichiometric and ambient pressure superconductors offer an ideal playground to investigate the role of structure for the mechanism of superconductivity in the absence of magnetism.
We report the discovery of a family of ternary platinum phosphides APt3P (A = Ca, Sr and La), which crystallize in an antiperovskite-based structure closely related to that of the heavy fermion superconductor CePt3Si. All three phosphides showed superconductivity at low temperatures and the highest critical temperature Tc = 8.4 K was observed for SrPt3P. The analysis of specific heat C(T) for SrPt3P shows clear evidence for very strong coupling s-wave superconductivity with a large ratio between superconducting gap D0 and Tc, 2D0/kBTc ~ 5, and the presence of low-energy phonons. The presence o…
We report the discovery of a bulk superconducting transition at 3.4 K in the ternary phosphide, ScIrP, which crystallizes in a hexagonal ZrNiAl-type structure without spatial inversion symmetry. On the basis of heat capacity data in a zero magnetic field, ScIrP is suggested to be a weakly-coupled Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor. Alternatively, experimental results under magnetic fields indicate that this material is a type-II superconductor with an upper critical field Hc2 at magnetic fields above 5 T at zero temperature. This moderately high Hc2 does not violate the Pauli limit, but …
The search for non-centrosymmetric superconductors that may exhibit unusual physical properties and unconventional superconductivity has yielded the synthesis of a non-centrosymmetric phosphide Mg$_2$Rh$_3$P with an Al$_2$Mo$_3$C-type structure. Although stoichiometric Mg$_2$Rh$_3$P does not exhibit superconductivity at temperatures above 2 K, we found that an Mg deficiency of approximately 5 at.% in the Mg$_2$Rh$_3$P induced superconductivity at 3.9 K. Physical properties such as the lattice parameter a = 0.70881 nm, Sommerfeld constant $γ_n$ = 5.36 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$, specific heat jump …
In this study, we succeeded in synthesizing new antiperovskite phosphides $M$Pd$_3$P ($M$ = Ca, Sr, Ba) and discovered the appearance of a superconducting phase (0.17 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.55) in a solid solution (Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$)Pd$_3$P. Three perovskite-related crystal structures were identified in (Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$)Pd$_3$P and a phase diagram was built on the basis of experimental results. The first phase transition from centrosymmetric ($Pnma$) to non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic ($Aba$2) occurred in CaPd$_3$P near room temperature. The phase transition temperature decreased as Ca$^{2+}$ wa…
The exploration of superconductivity dominated by structural units is of great interest in condense matter physics. MgB2, consisting of graphene-like B, becomes a typical representative of traditional superconductors. Phosphorus demonstrates diverse non-planar motifs through sp3 hybridization in allotropes and phosphides. Here, we report that a pressure-stabilized LaP2, isostructural to MgB2, shows superconductivity with a predicted Tc of 22.2 K, which is the highest among already known transition metal phosphides. Besides electron-phonon coupling of graphene-like P, alike the role of B layer …
Topological semimetal, a novel state of quantum matter hosting exotic emergent quantum phenomena dictated by the non-trivial band topology, has emerged as a new frontier in condensed-matter physics. Very recently, a coexistence of triply degenerate points of band crossing and Weyl points near the Fermi level was theoretically predicted and immediately experimentally verified in single crystalline molybdenum phosphide (MoP). Here we show in this material the high-pressure electronic transport and synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, combined with density functional theory (DFT) cal…
Superconductivity in binary ruthenium pnictides occurs proximal to and upon suppression of a mysterious non-magnetic ground state, preceded by a pseudogap phase associated with Fermi surface instability, and its critical temperature, T$_{c}$, is maximized around the pseudogap quantum critical point. By analogy with isoelectronic iron based counterparts, antiferromagnetic fluctuations became "usual suspects" as putative mediators of superconducting pairing. Here we report on a high temperature local symmetry breaking in RuP, the parent of the maximum-Tc branch of these novel superconductors, re…
We report a systematic NMR study on [Sr$_4$Sc$_2$O$_6$]Fe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$, for which the local lattice parameters of the iron-pnictogen (Fe$Pn$) layer are similar to those of the series LaFe(As$_{1-x'}$P$_{x'}$)O, which exhibit two segregated antiferromagnetic (AFM) order phases, AFM1 at $x'$=0-0.2 and AFM2 at $x'$=0.4-0.7. Our results revealed that the parent AFM1 phase at $x$=0 disappears at $x$=0.3-0.4, corresponding to a pnictogen height ($h_{pn}$) from the Fe-plane of 1.3-1.32 Å, which is similar to that of LaFe(As$_{1-x'}$P$_{x'}$)O and various parent Fe-pnictides. By contrast, …
Superconductivity in LaNiPO is disrupted by small (~5%) amounts of non-stoichiometry on the lanthanum site, even though the electronic contribution to the heat capacity increases with increasing non-stoichiometry. All samples also exhibit specific heat anomalies consistent with the presence of ferromagnetic spin fluctuations (Tsf ~ 14 K). Comparison of layered nickel phosphide and nickel borocarbide superconductors reveals different structure-property correlations in the two families.
This paper reviews quantum oscillation studies of iron-pnictide superconductors and related materials. These measurements give unique information regarding the full three dimensional topology of the Fermi surfaces and the renormalisation of the quasi-particle masses. The review will cover measurements of the 122 arsenide end members, XFe_2As_2 (X = Ba, Sr, Ca) which have a spin density wave ground state, but will concentrate on the phosphide end members (LaFePO and XFe2P2) which have a paramagnetic ground state and a Fermi surface topology which is similar to the higher Tc superconducting iron…
The recently discovered quaternary arsenide oxide superconductor La[O1-xFx]FeAs with the superconducting critical transition temperature (Tc) of 26 K [1], has been quickly expanded to another high-Tc superconducting system beyond copper oxides by the replacement of La with other rare earth elements, such as Sm, Ce, and Pr etc. [2-4], and the Pr[O1-xFx]FeAs has become to be the first non-cuprate superconductor that holding a Tc above 50 K. All these arsenide (including phosphide) superconductors formed in a same tetragonal layered structure with the space group P4/nmm which has an alternant sta…
In several iron-arsenide superconductors there is strong evidence for a fully gapped superconducting state consistent with either a conventional s-wave symmetry or an unusual $s_\pm$ state where there the gap changes sign between the electron and hole Fermi surface sheets. Here we report measurements of the penetration depth $λ(T)$ in very clean samples of the related iron-phosphide superconductor, LaFePO, at temperatures down to $\sim$ 100 mK. We find that $λ(T)$ varies almost perfectly linearly with $T$ strongly suggesting the presence of gap nodes in this compound. Taken together with other…
We examine the possibility of high temperature superconductivity from two-dimensional semiconductor without antiferromagnetic fluctuations. The weak coupling BCS theory is applied, especially where the Fermi level is near the bottom of the conduction band. Due to screening, the attractive interaction is local in k-space. The density of states(DOS) does not have a peak near the bottom of the band, but k-dependent contribution to DOS has a diverging peak at the bottom. These features lead to high temperature superconductivity which may explain the possible superconductivity of WO_3.
The traditional symmetries that protect superconductivity are time-reversal and inversion. Here, we examine the minimal symmetries protecting superconductivity in two dimensions and find that time-reversal symmetry and inversion symmetry are not required, and having a combination of either symmetry with a mirror operation on the basal plane is sufficient. We classify superconducting states stabilized by these two symmetries, when time-reversal and inversion symmetries are not present, and provide realistic minimal models as examples. Interestingly, several experimentally realized systems, such…
Superconductivity with $T_{\rm c}$ $\simeq$ 2 K was discovered in the intermetallic binary compounds Rh$_2$Ga$_9$ and Ir$_2$Ga$_9$. This is the first observation of superconductivity in the Rh-Ga and Ir-Ga binary systems. Both compounds crystallize in a distorted Co$_2$Al$_9$-type structure (monoclinic, space group: $Pc$), which lacks spatial inversion symmetry. Specific heat measurements revealed that both compounds are weak-coupling BCS superconductors having an isotropic superconducting gap. Measurements in magnetic fields indicated type-I superconductivity with a critical field $H_{\rm c}(…
Antiperovskites are a promising candidate structure for the exploration of new materials. We discovered an antiperovskite phosphide, LaPd$_{3}$P, following our recent synthesis of $A$Pd$_{3}$P ($A$ = Ca, Sr, Ba). While $A$Pd$_{3}$P and (Ca,Sr)Pd$_{3}$P were found to be tetragonal or orthorhombic systems, LaPd$_{3}$P is a new prototype cubic system ($a$ = 9.0317(1) A) with a noncentrosymmetric space group ($I-43m$). LaPd$_{3}$P exhibited superconductivity with a transition temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) of 0.28 K. The upper critical field, Debye temperature, and Sommerfeld constant ($γ$) were det…
We investigated systemically YBa2Cu3-x(Fe, Co, Al, Zn)xO7-δ (x=0.0\sim0.5) cuprates through the XRD, the test of superconductivity, oxygen contents, positron annihilation technology and simulated calculations. The experimental results and theoretic calculations support such a conclusion that the Tc does not depend directly on the density of valence electron in the samples. Moreover, whether or not it may imply some correlations between Fe-oxide superconductors and cuprates that Fe doped Y123 samples show some unique characteristics.
While multi-layer systems can possess global inversion centers, they can have regions with locally broken inversion symmetry. This can modify the superconducting properties of such a system. Here we analyze two dimensional multi-layer systems yielding spatially modulated antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (ASOC) and discuss superconductivity with mixed parity order parameters. In particular, the influence of ASOC on the spin susceptibility is investigated at zero temperature. For weak inter-layer coupling we find an enhanced spin susceptibility induced by ASOC, which hints the potential importa…
The occurrence of retarded (with glue) and unretarded (without glue) pairing is thoroughly discussed in cuprates. We analyze some aspects of this problem in the context of the t-J-V model in a large-N approximation. When 1/N renormalizations are neglected the mean-field result is recovered, where the unretarded d-wave superconducting pairing triggered by the spin-exchange interaction J is obtained. However, the presence of a non-negligible nearest-neighbors Coulomb interaction V(q) kills superconductivity. If the non-double-occupancy constraint and its fluctuations are considered, the situatio…
Here we report a new class of superconductors prepared by high pressure synthesis in the quaternary family ReFeAsO1-delta (Re = Sm, Nd, Pr, Ce, La) without fluorine doping. The onset superconducting critical temperature (Tc) in these compounds increases with the reduction of Re atom size, and the highest Tc obtained so far is 55 K in SmFeAsO1-delta. For the NdFeAsO1-delta system with different oxygen concentration a dome-shaped phase diagram was found.
Electron pairing is central to modern concepts of superconductivity, and provides a basis for the ubiquitous presence of h/2e in the theory and phenomenology. However, the lack of a consistent real-space picture of phonon-mediated pairing suggests that the pairing interpretation may be incomplete or even misleading. Alternatively, the present picture refers back to an old proposal by Frohlich, whereby superconductivity is based on an induced electron charge density wave coupled to a one-dimensional static lattice distortion. In the new picture, dynamic three-dimensional charge-density waves co…
Majorana Fermions, strange particles that are their own antiparticles, were predicted in 1937 and have been sought after ever since. In condensed matter they are predicted to exist as vortex core or edge excitations in certain exotic superconductors. These are topological superconductors whose order parameter phase winds non-trivially in momentum space. In recent years, a new and promising route for realizing topological superconductors has opened due to advances in the field of topological insulators. Current proposals are based on semiconductor heterostructures, where spin-orbit coupled band…
The symmetry properties and the general overview of the superconductivity theory in the itinerant ferromagnets and in materials without space parity are presented. The basic notions of unconventional superconductivity are introduced in broad context of multiband superconductivity which is inherent property of ferromagnetic metals or metals without centre of inversion.
Resistivities of single-crystalline as well as poly-crystalline samples of CeOBiS2 without fluorine doping were measured at temperatures down to 0.13 K, and were compared with those of poly-crystalline LaOBiS2 and PrOBiS2. Both poly-crystalline and single-crystalline CeOBiS2 exhibited zero resistivity below 1.2 K while poly-crystalline LaOBiS2 and PrOBiS2 did not show zero resistivity down to 0.13 K. Superconducting transition temperature of CeOBiS2 was reduced by increasing the applied current density. The superconductivity of CeOBiS2 without chemical doping is likely triggered by the carrier…
Local superconducting gap structure is studied as a function of nanoscale depth in electric-field-induced surface superconductivity such as in SrTiO3. We examine solutions of Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation in two limiting confinement potential cases of electric field with and without screening effects. As unique properties different from bulk superconductivity, there appear in-gap states even for isotropic s-wave pairing, due to multiple gap structure of sub-band dependent surface superconductivity. These determine the depth-dependence of local superconductivity.
A Green functions approach is used to study superconductivity in nanofilms and nanowires. We show that the superconducting condensate results from the multimodal entanglement, or internal Josephson coupling, of the subcondensates associated with the manifold of Fermi surface subparts resulting from size-quantisation. This entanglement is of critical importance in these systems, since without it superconductivity would be extremely weak, if not completely negligible. Further, the multimodal character of the condensate generally results in multigap superconductivity, with great quantitative cons…
The search for a Majorana Fermion has been an area of intense interest in condensed matter research of late. This elusive particle, predicted to exist in 1937, has been sought after for both fundamental and practical reasons. On the fundamental level, no particle to date has been observed to be a Majorana fermion, meanwhile on the practical level a Majorana fermion, if found, would represent a non-abelian anyon and could thus be used to build a quantum computer. The search for a Majorana Fermion has recently shifted to topological superconductivity. Topological superconductors are categorized …
Recently, Bi-based compounds have attracted attentions because of the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In this work, we figured out the role of SOC in ABi$_{3}$ (A=Sr and Ba) by theoretical investigation of the band structures, phonon properties, and electron-phonon coupling. Without SOC, strong Fermi surface nesting leads to phonon instabilities in ABi$_{3}$. SOC suppresses the nesting and stabilizes the structure. Moreover, without SOC the calculation largely underestimates the superconducting transition temperatures ($T_{c}$), while with SOC the calculated $T_{c}$ are very close to those d…
Using the standard Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory, we revise microscopic derivation of the superconductor-insulator boundary conditions for the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) model. We obtain a negative contribution to free energy in the form of surface integral. Boundary conditions for the conventional superconductor have the form $\textbf{n} \cdot \nabla ψ= \text{const} ψ$. These are shown to follow from considering the order parameter reflected in the boundary. The boundary conditions are also derived for more general GL models with higher-order derivatives and pair-density-wave states. It sh…
A new ternary platinum phosphide CePt$_{3}$P was synthesized and characterized by means of magnetic, thermodynamic and transport measurements. The compound crystallizes in an antiperovskite tetragonal structure similar to that in the canonical family of platinum-based superconductors $A$Pt$_{3}$P ($A$ = Sr, Ca, La) and closely related to the noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductor CePt$_{3}$Si. In contrast to all the superconducting counterparts, however, no superconductivity is observed in CePt$_{3}$P down to 0.5 K. Instead, CePt$_{3}$P displays a coexistence of antiferromagnetic orde…
The theory of paramagnetic limit of superconductivity in metals without inversion center is developed. There is in general the paramagnetic suppression of superconducting state. The effect is strongly dependent on field orientation in respect to crystal axes. The reason for this is that the degeneracy of electronic states with opposite momenta forming of Cooper pairs is lifted by magnetic field but for some field directions this lifting can be small or even absent.
We study the superconductivity in typical $d$-band elemental superconductors V and Nb with the recently developed non-empirical computational scheme based on the density functional theory for superconductors. The effect of ferromagnetic fluctuation (paramagnon) on the superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$), which in principle suppress the $s$-wave superconducting pairing, is quantified without any empirical parameter. We show that the strong paramagnon effect cancels the $T_{\rm c}$-enhancing effects of the phonon-mediated pairing and dynamical screened Coulomb interaction.
We report the synthesis, electronic properties, and electronic structure of ullmannite-type PtSbS, which has a cubic crystal structure without space inversion symmetry. Electrical resistivity and magnetization measured at low temperatures suggested that this compound is a bulk superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature of Tc = 0.15 K. First principles calculations indicated that Fermi surfaces of PtSbS include strongly nested hole pockets, which can make this compound interesting if they contribute to the emergence of superconductivity.
The Josephson-like interband couplings in multi-band superconductivity exhibit degenerate energy minima, which support states with kinks in phase of superconductivity. When the interband couplings in systems of three or more components are frustrated, the time-reversal symmetry (TRS) can be broken, which generates another type of phase kink between the two time-reversal-symmetry breaking (TRSB) pair states. In this work, we focus on these novel states of phase kinks, and investigate their stability, similarity, differences and physical consequences. Main results are summarized as follows: (1) …
Fe-based superconductors exhibit a diverse interplay between charge, orbital, and magnetic ordering1-4. Variations in atomic geometry affect electron hopping between Fe atoms5,6 and the Fermi surface topology, influencing magnetic frustration and the pairing mechanism through changes of orbital overlap and occupancies7-11. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a systematic approach to realize superconductivity without chemical doping in BaFe2As2, employing geometric design within an epitaxial heterostructure. We control both tetragonality and orthorhombicity in BaFe2As2 through superlattice engi…
In topological materials, Dirac fermions can split into two Weyl fermions with opposite chiralities due to the breaking of space inversion symmetry, while in non-centrosymmetric superconductors, novel superconducting electron pairing mechanisms arise because of the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling. In this work, we report the pressure-introduced superconductivity in a typical noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetal LaAlX (X=Si and Ge). Superconductivity was observed at around 65 GPa without structural phase transition. A typical dome-shape phase diagram is obtained with the maximum Tc of 2.5 K (2.1…
High temperature superconductivity is often found in the vicinity of antiferromagnetism. This is also true in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ ($x \leq$ 0.2) and many other iron-based superconductors, which leads to proposals that superconductivity is mediated by fluctuations associated with the nearby magnetism. Here we report the discovery of a new superconductivity dome without low-energy magnetic fluctuations in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ with 0.25$\leq x \leq$0.75, where the maximal critical temperature $T_c$ at $x_{opt}$ = 0.5$\sim$0.55 is even higher than that at $x \leq$ 0.2. By nuclear magnetic res…
We report a microscopic model wherein the unconventional superconductivity emerges from an incoherent `Cooper-pair glass' state. Driven by the pair-pair interaction, a new type of quasi-Bose phase transition is at work. The interaction leads to the unconventional coupling of the quasiparticles to excited pair states, or `super-quasiparticles', with a non-retarded energy-dependent gap. The model describes quantitatively the quasiparticle excitation spectra of both cuprates and pnictides, including the universal `peak-dip-hump' signatures, and for the pseudogap phase above $T_c$. The results sho…
Stimulated by recent studies of superconductivity and magnetism with local and global broken inversion symmetry, we investigate the superconductivity in magnetic multipole states in locally noncentrosymmetric metals. We consider a one-dimensional zigzag chain with sublattice-dependent antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling and suppose three magnetic multipole orders: monopole order, dipole order, and quadrupole order. It is demonstrated that the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state, the pair-density wave (PDW) state, and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state are stabilized by these multipole…
The theory of hole superconductivity explains high temperature superconductivity in cuprates as driven by pairing of hole carriers in oxygen $pπ$ orbitals in the highly negatively charged $Cu-O$ planes. The pairing mechanism is hole undressing and is Coulomb-interaction driven. We propose that the planes of $B$ atoms in $Mg B_2$ are akin to the $Cu-O$ planes without $Cu$, and that the recently observed high temperature superconductivity in $Mg B_2$ arises similarly from undressing of hole carriers in the planar boron $p_{x,y}$ orbitals in the negatively charged $B^-$ planes. Doping $Mg B_2$ wi…
We demonstrate that the formation of a chiral d-density wave (CDDW) state generates a Topological Meissner effect (TME) in the absence of any kind of superconductivity. The TME is identical to the usual superconducting Meissner effect but it appears only for magnetic fields perpendicular to the plane while it is absent for in plane fields. The observed enhanced diamagnetic signals in the non-superconducting pseudogap regime of the cuprates may find an alternative interpretation in terms of a TME, originating from a chiral d-density wave pseudogap.
A superconducting (SC) mixed state occurs in type-II superconductors where the upper critical field Hc2 is higher than the thermodynamic critical field Hc. When an applied field is in between these fields, the free energy depends weakly on the order parameter which therefore can be small (SC state) or zero (normal state) at different parts of the sample. In this paper we demonstrate how a normal state along a line traversing a superconductor can be turned on and off externally in zero field. The concept is based on a long, current-carrying excitation coil, piercing a ringshaped superconductor.…
Unlike the widely studied ReFeAsO series, the newly discovered iron-based superconductor ThFeAsN exhibits a remarkably high critical temperature of 30 K, without chemical doping or external pressure. Here we investigate in detail its magnetic and superconducting properties via muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques and show that ThFeAsN exhibits strong magnetic fluctuations, suppressed below 35 K, but no magnetic order. This contrasts strongly with the ReFeAsO series, where stoichiometric parent materials order antiferromagnetically and supercondu…
The theoretical description and the survey of physical properties of superconducting states in the uranium ferromagnetic materials are presented. On the basis of microscopic theory is shown that the coupling between the electrons in these ferromagnetic metals by means of magnetization fluctuations gives rise the triplet pairing superconducting state and the general form of the order parameter dictated by the symmetry is established. The theory allows to explain some specific observations including peculiar phenomenon of reentrant superconductivity in URhGe in magnetic field perpendicular to th…
Superconductivity is a phenomena where an external-feeding current flows through the system without voltage drop. This indicates the existence of an energy minimum under the current feeding boundary condition. Although it is believed that superconductivity is explained by the BCS theory that attributes the origin of superconductivity to the electron pair formation, such an energy minimum has never been obtained by it. We have found such a minimum in the system exhibiting spin twisting itinerant motion of electrons with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, but without referring to the electron pa…
We argue the emergence of nodal excitations due to the coupling with static antiferromagnetic order in fully-gapped superconducting states in both cases with and without inversion symmetry. This line node structure is not accompanied with the sign change of the superconducting gap, in contrast to usual unconventional Cooper pairs with higher angular momenta. In the case without inversion symmetry, the stability of the nodal excitations crucially depends on the direction of the antiferromagnetic staggered magnetic moment. A possible realization of this phenomenon in CePt$_3$Si is discussed.
We present a novel route for attaining unconventional superconductivity (SC) in a strongly correlated system without doping. In a simple model of a correlated band insulator (BI) at half-filling we demonstrate, based on a generalization of the projected wavefunctions method, that SC emerges when e-e interactions and the bare band-gap are both much larger than the kinetic energy, provided the system has sufficient frustration against the magnetic order. As the interactions are tuned, SC appears sandwiched between the correlated BI followed by a paramagnetic metal on one side, and a ferrimagneti…
Topological superconductivity is the quantum condensate of paired electrons with an odd parity of the pairing function. One of the candidates is the triplet pairing superconductor derived from topological insulator Bi2Se3 by chemical doping. Theoretically it was predicted that a two-fold superconducting order parameter may exist in this kind of bulk topological superconductor. Earlier experiments by nuclear magnetic resonance and angle-resolved magnetocaloric measurements seem to support this picture. By using a Corbino-shape like electrode configuration, we measure the c-axis resistivity with…
As a half-metal is spin-polarized at its Fermi level by definition, it was conventionally thought to have little proximity effect to an s-wave superconductor. Here we show that, with interface spin-orbit coupling, $p_x +ip_y$ superconductivity without spin degeneracy is induced on the half-metal, and we give an estimate of its bulk energy gap. Therefore a single-band half-metal can give us a topological superconductor with a single chiral Majorana edge state. Our band calculation shows that two atomic layers of VTe or CrO$_2$ is a single-band half-metal for a wide range ($\sim$0.1eV) of Fermi …
We report on novel superconducting characteristics of the heavy fermion (HF) superconductor CePt3Si without inversion symmetry through 195Pt-NMR study on a single crystal with T_c= 0.46 K that is lower than T_c= 0.75 K for polycrystals. We show that the intrinsic superconducting characteristics inherent to CePt3Si can be understood in terms of the unconventional strong-coupling state with a line-node gap below T_c= 0.46 K. The mystery about the sample dependence of T_c is explained by the fact that more or less polycrystals and single crystals inevitably contain some disordered domains, which …
The electronic states and superconductivity in iron pnictides are studied on the basis of the 16 band $d$-$p$ model which includes both the onsite Coulomb interaction between Fe $d$ electrons and the intersite one between Fe $d$ and pnictogen $p$ electrons. The model well accounts for experimentally observed two fluctuations: the $d$-$d$ interaction-enhanced antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuation and the $d$-$p$ interaction-enhanced ferro-orbital (FO) fluctuation responsible for the $C_{66}$ elastic softening. The AFM fluctuation induces the repulsive pairing interaction for $\bm{q}\sim \bm{Q}_{\…
We investigate the superconducting gap function of topological superconductor PbTaSe$_2$. Temperature, magnetic field, and three-dimensional (3D) field-angle dependences of the specific heat prove that the superconductivity of PbTaSe$_2$ is fully-gapped, with two isotropic $s$-wave gaps. The pair-breaking effect is probed by systematically increasing non-magnetic disorders through H$^+$-irradiations. The superconducting transition temperature, $T_{\rm{c}}$, is found to be robust against disorders, which suggests that the pairing should be sign-preserved rather than sign-reversed.
All the iron-based superconductors identified to date share a square lattice composed of Fe atoms as a common feature, despite having different crystal structures. In copper-based materials, the superconducting phase emerges not only in square lattice structures but also in ladder structures. Yet iron-based superconductors without a square lattice motif have not been found despite being actively sought out. Here, we report the discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in the iron-based spin-ladder material BaFe2S3, a Mott insulator with striped-type magnetic ordering below ~120 K. On the…
The kagome metal CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ features an unusual competition between the charge-density-wave (CDW) order and superconductivity. Evidence for time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) inside the CDW phase has been accumulating. Hence, the superconductivity in CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ emerges from a TRSB normal state, potentially resulting in an exotic superconducting state. To reveal the pairing symmetry, we first investigate the effect of nonmagnetic impurity. Our results show that the superconducting critical temperature is insensitive to disorder, pointing to conventional $s$-wave superconductiv…
The particular shape of the Fermi surface can give rise to a number of collective quantum phenomena in solids, such as density wave orderings or even superconductivity. In many new iron superconductors this shape, the 'nested' Fermi surface, is indeed observed, but its role in the formation of spin-density waves or superconductivity is not clear. We have studied the electronic structure of the non-magnetic LiFeAs (Tc~18K) superconductor using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find a notable absence of the Fermi surface nesting, strong renormalization of the conduction bands by a fa…
This Chapter gives a brief introduction to some basic aspects metals and superconductors in crystal without inversion symmetry. In a first part we analyze some normal state properties which arise through antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling existing in non-centrosymmetric materials and show its influence on the de Haas-van Alphen effect. For the superconducting phase we introduce a multi-band formulation which naturally arises due the spin splitting of the bands by spin-orbit coupling. It will then be shown how the states can be symmetry classified and their relation to the original classificatio…
