We computed a Lennard Jones frozen liquid with a free surface using classical molecular dynamics. The structure factor curves on the free surface of this sample was calculated for different depths knowing that we have periodic boundary conditions on the other parts of the sample. The resulting structure factor curves show an horizontal shift of their first peak depending on how deep in the sample the curves are computed. We analyze our resulting curves in the light of spatial correlation functions during melting and at when the liquid is frozen. The conclusion is that near the free surface the sample is less dense than in the bulk and that the frozen liquid surface has a spatial correlation which does not differ very much from that of the bulk. This result is intrinsic to the melting of the Lennard Jones liquid and does not depend on any other parameter.
We find through computer simulations that the fractional volume change on freezing of polydisperse Lennard-Jones liquid decreases with increasing polydispersity and approaches zero near a terminal polydispersity of 0.11, independent of temperature. The transition however remains first order at terminal polydispersity. Average inherent structure (IS) energy of the crystalline phase increases nearly quadratically with polydispersity indices (δ) and marked by a crossover to nearly constant IS energy in the amorphous phase.
At density 1.2 the Kob-Andersen binary Lennard-Jones liquid partly crystallizes in the temperature interval [0.39, 0.44] after typically 10-100 microseconds (Argon units). The crystallization is initiated by a phase separation where the large (A) particles cluster in a volume void of B particles. We investigate a modification of the Kob-Andersen system where the attraction between particles of the same type is removed, thus disfavoring phase separation. We have not been able to crystallize this new system.
We study a three-dimensional system of self-propelled Lennard-Jones particles using Brownian Dynamics simulations. Using recent theoretical results for active matter, we calculate the pressure and report equations of state for the system. Additionally, we chart the vapour-liquid coexistence and show that the coexistence densities can be well described using simple power laws. Lastly, we demonstrate that our out-of-equilibrium system shows deviations from both the law of rectilinear diameters and the law of corresponding states.
Using simulations, we construct the effective dynamics in metabasin space for a Lennard-Jones glass-former. Metabasins are identified via a scheme that measures transition rates between inherent structures, and generates clusters of inherent structures by drawing in branches that have the largest transition rates. The effective dynamics is shown to be Markovian but differs significantly from the simplest trap models. We specifically show that retaining information about the connectivity in metabasin space is crucial for reproducing the slow dynamics observed in this system.
Monte Carlo simulation studies are performed for the Lennard-Jones like two Yukawa (LJ2Y) potential to show how properties of this model fluid depend on the replacement of the soft repulsion by the hard-core repulsion. Different distances for the positioning of hard core have been explored. We have found, that for temperatures that are slightly lower and slightly higher of the critical point temperature for the Lennard-Jones fluid, placing the hard core at distances that are shorter than zero-potential energy is well justified by thermodynamic properties that are practically the same as in ori…
We argue that recently proposed [Melnyk et al., Fluid Phase Equilibr., 2009, Vol. 279, 1] a criterion to split the pair interaction energy into two parts, one of which is forced to be responsible the most accurate as possible for excluded volume energy in the system, results in expressions for the virial coefficients that improve the performance of the virial equation of state in general, and at subcritical temperatures, in particular. As an example, application to the Lennard-Jones-like hard-core attractive Yukawa fluid is discussed.
We study structural transitions in a system of interacting particles arranged as a crystalline bilayer, as a function of the density $ρ$ and the distance $d$ between the layers. As $d$ is decreased a sequence of transitions involving triangular, rhombic, square and centered rectangular lattices is observed. The sequence of phases and the order of transitions depends on the nature of interactions.
We report molecular-dynamics simulations on a three-dimensional two-component Lennard-Jones fluid. We identify two distinct static length scales. The longer length scale, which diverges at low temperatures, is continuous with the high-temperature static correlation length. The shorter length scale reflects static clusters that form below a T_mc of approximately 2 well above an apparent melting point T_m of approximately 1.08. We partially visualize the clusters; their maximum radius is temperature-independent. Cluster static and dynamic properties match Kivelson's model (S. A. Kivelson, et al.…
We analyze the structure diagram for binary clusters of Lennard-Jones particles by means of a global optimization approach for a large range of cluster sizes, compositions and interaction energies and present a publicly accessible database of 180,000 minimal energy structures (http://softmattertheory.lu/clusters.html). We identify a variety of structures such as core-shell clusters, Janus clusters and clusters in which the minority species is located at the vertices of icosahedra. Such clusters can be synthesized from nanoparticles in agglomeration experiments and used as building blocks in co…
Self-assembly of Janus (or `patchy') particles is dependent on the precise interaction between neighbouring particles. Here, the orientations of two amphiphilic Janus spheres within a dimer in an explicit fluid are studied with high geometric resolution. Molecular dynamics simulations and first-principles energy calculations are used with hard- and soft-sphere Lennard-Jones potentials, and temperature and hydrophobicity are varied. The most probable centre-centre-pole angles are in the range 40° to 55°, with pole-to-pole alignment not observed due to orientational entropy. Angles near 90° are …
We study a three-dimensional system of self-propelled Brownian particles interacting via the Lennard-Jones potential. Using Brownian Dynamics simulations in an elongated simulation box, we investigate the steady states of vapour-liquid phase coexistence of active Lennard-Jones particles with planar interfaces. We measure the normal and tangential components of the pressure tensor along the direction perpendicular to the interface and verify mechanical equilibrium of the two coexisting phases. In addition, we determine the non-equilibrium interfacial tension by integrating the difference of the…
Using extensive molecular dynamics simulations of an equilibrium, glass-forming Lennard-Jones mixture, we characterize in detail the local atomic motions. We show that spatial correlations exist among particles undergoing extremely large (``mobile'') or extremely small (``immobile'') displacements over a suitably chosen time interval. The immobile particles form the cores of relatively compact clusters, while the mobile particles move cooperatively and form quasi-one-dimensional, string-like clusters. The strength and length scale of the correlations between mobile particles are found to grow …
A spherocylinder-like molecule with a Lennard-Jones type interaction is proposed as a model of smectic-A (Sm-A) liquid crystals, which can form a free-standing film. By means of Gibbs ensemble simulations, the isotropic, nematic, and Sm-A phases of the model fluid are found to coexist with a vapor phase; and the coexistence conditions of the liquid crystal phases with the vapor phase are determined. For a set of the interaction-parameters of the model molecule, the Sm-A free-standing film is produced below the bulk isotropic--Sm-A phase transition temperature by using Monte Carlo simulations. …
This series of papers is devoted to identifying and explaining the properties of strongly correlating liquids, i.e., liquids with more than 90% correlation between their virial W and potential energy U fluctuations in the NVT ensemble. Paper IV [N. Gnan et al., J. Chem. Phys. v131, 234504 (2009)] showed that strongly correlating liquids have "isomorphs", which are curves in the phase diagram along which structure, dynamics, and some thermodynamic properties are invariant in reduced units. In the present paper, using the fact that reduced-unit radial distribution functions are isomorph invarian…
We formulate a straightforward scheme of statistical mechanics for inhomogeneous systems that includes the virial series in powers of the activity for the grand free energy and density distributions. There, cluster integrals formulated for inhomogeneous systems play a main role. We center on second order terms that were analyzed in the case of hard-wall confinement, focusing in planar, spherical and cylindrical walls. Further analysis was devoted to the Lennard-Jones system and its generalization the 2k-k potential. For this interaction potentials the second cluster integral was evaluated anal…
The crucial problem for better understanding the nature of glass transition and related relaxation phenomena is to find proper interrelations between molecular dynamics and thermodynamics of viscous systems. To gain this aim the recently observed density scaling of viscous liquid dynamics has been very intensively and successfully studied for last years. However, previous attempts at related scaling of volumetric data yielded results inconsistent with those found from the density scaling of molecular dynamics. In this Letter, we show that volumetric data obtained from simulations in simple mol…
The classic Kob-Andersen (KA) binary Lennard-Jones mixtures which are designed to prevent crystallization has been extensively studied in simulation of slow dynamics. Although crystallization can occur if a liquid system is cooled slowly, so far the KA model has not been crystallized. Here we report using molecular simulation the observation of crystal growth in the supercooled KA liquids. The onset of crystallization is observed occurring at temperature $T_c= 0.55$ which is higher than the glass transition temperature of $T_g=0.40$. We further examine the statistical distribution of single pa…
We report on a computer simulation study of a Lennard-Jones liquid confined in a narrow slit pore with tunable attractive walls. In order to investigate how freezing in this system occurs, we perform an analysis using different order parameters. Although some of the parameters indicate that the system goes through a hexatic phase, other parameters do not. This shows that to be certain whether a system has a hexatic phase, one needs to study not only a large system, but also several order parameters to check all necessary properties. We find that the Binder cumulant is the most reliable one to …
We reanalyse the cell theory of Lennard-Jones and Devonshire and find that in addition to the critical point originally reported for the 12-6 potential (and widely quoted in standard textbooks), the model exhibits a further critical point. We show that the latter is actually a more appropriate candidate for liquid-gas criticality than the original critical point.
We generalize previous approach of Khrapak and Morfill [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 134}, 094108 (2011)] to construct simple and sufficiently accurate freezing and melting equations for the conventional Lennard-Jones (LJ) system to $n$-6 LJ systems, using the accurate results for the triple points of these systems published by Sousa {\it et al.} [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 136}, 174502 (2012)].
We reaccess the droplet condensation-evaporation transition of a three-dimensional Lennard-Jones system upon a temperature change. With the help of parallel multicanonical simulations we obtain precise estimates of the transition temperature and the width of the transition for systems with up to 2048 particles. This allows us to supplement previous observations of finite-size scaling regimes with a clearer picture also for the case of a continuous particle model.
We calculate the density of states of a binary Lennard-Jones glass using a recently proposed Monte Carlo algorithm. Unlike traditional molecular simulation approaches, the algorithm samples distinct configurations according to self-consistent estimates of the density of states, thereby giving rise to uniform internal-energy histograms. The method is applied to simulate the equilibrium, low-temperature thermodynamic properties of a widely studied glass former consisting of a binary mixture of Lennard-Jones particles. We show how a density-of-states algorithm can be combined with particle identi…
We introduce a nonequilibrium off--lattice model for anisotropic phenomena in fluids. This is a Lennard--Jones generalization of the driven lattice--gas model in which the particles' spatial coordinates vary continuously. A comparison between the two models allows us to discuss some exceptional, hardly realistic features of the original discrete system --which has been considered a prototype for nonequilibrium anisotropic phase transitions. We thus help to clarify open issues, and discuss on the implications of our observations for future investigation of anisotropic phase transitions.
We present a computer simulation study of a (6,12)-Lennard-Jones fluid confined to a slit pore, formed by two uniform planes. These interact via a (3,9)-Lennard-Jones potential with the fluid particles. When the fluid approaches the liquid-to-solid transition we first observe layering parallel to the walls. In order to investigate the nature of the freezing transition, we performed a detailed analysis of the bond-orientational order parameter in the layers. Changing the distance between the slit wall, we studied howthe behaviour changes from a quasi-2d crystallization without hysteresis and an…
A four-time correlation function was calculated using a computer simulation of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture. The information content of the four-time correlation function is similar to that of four-time correlation functions measured in NMR experiments. The correlation function selects a sub-ensemble and analyzes its dynamics after some waiting time. The lifetime of the sub-ensemble selected by the four-time correlation function is calculated, and compared to the lifetimes of slow sub-ensembles selected using two different definitions of mobility, and to the $α$ relaxation time.
We investigate by Molecular Dynamics simulation a system of $N$ particles moving on the surface of a two-dimensional sphere and interacting by a Lennard-Jones potential. We detail the way to account for the changes brought by a nonzero curvature, both at a methodological and at a physical level. When compared to a two-dimensional Lennard-Jones liquid on the Euclidean plane, where a phase transition to an ordered hexagonal phase takes place, we find that the presence of excess defects imposed by the topology of the sphere frustrates the hexagonal order. We observe at high density a rapid increa…
We present a quantitative comparison at equivalent thermodynamical conditions of bulk and confined dynamical properties of a Lennard Jones binary mixture upon supercooling. Both systems had been previously found to display a behavior in agreement with the Mode Coupling theory of the evolution of glassy dynamics. Differences and analogies of behavior are discussed focusing in particular on the role of hopping in reducing spatially correlated dynamics in the confined system with respect to the bulk.
Non-equilibrium Molecular Dynamics (NEMD) calculations of the bulk viscosity of the triple point Lennard-Jones fluid are performed with the aim of investigating the origin of the observed disagreement between Green-Kubo estimates and previous NEMD data. We show that a careful application of the Doll's perturbation field, the dynamical NEMD method, the instantaneous form of the perturbation and the "subtraction technique" provides a NEMD estimate of the bulk viscosity at zero field in full agreement with the value obtained by the Green-Kubo formula. As previously reported for the shear viscosit…
To describe short-time (picosecond) and small-scale (nanometre) transport in fluids, a Green's function approach was recently developed. This approach relies on an expansion of the distribution of single particle displacements around a Gaussian function, yielding an infinite series of correction terms. Applying a recent theorem [Van Zon and Cohen, J. Stat. Phys. 123, 1-37 (2006)] shows that for sufficiently small times the terms in this series become successively smaller, so that truncating the series near or at the Gaussian level might provide a good approximation. In the present paper, we de…
It is demonstrated that the crossover between gas- and liquid-like regions on the phase diagram of the Lennard-Jones system occurs at a fixed value of the density divided by its value at the freezing point, $ρ/ρ_{\rm fr}\simeq 0.35$. This definition is consistent with other definitions proposed recently. As a result a very simple practical expression for the gas-to-liquid crossover line emerges.
Melting temperatures at ambient pressure of systems of isosceles Lennard-Jones trimers with angles ranging from 70 degrees to 100 degrees are determined. Two crystal structures are considered: a distorted body centered cubic structure and a distorted face centered cubic structure with preferred angles of 77 and 96 degrees, respectively. Liquid dynamics are slowed down when the angle is increased. A trimer angle of 83 degrees yields the largest distance between isochrones and the melting temperature, suggesting that this value gives the optimal glass-forming ability. It is conjectured that bett…
We reveal the existence of systematic variations of isobaric fragility in different supercooled Lennard-Jones binary mixtures by performing molecular dynamics simulations. The connection between fragility and local structures in the bulk is analyzed by means of a Voronoi construction. We find that clusters of particles belonging to locally preferred structures form slow, long-lived domains, whose spatial extension increases by decreasing temperature. As a general rule, a more rapid growth, upon supercooling, of such domains is associated to a more pronounced super-Arrhenius behavior, hence to …
We apply the recently developed adaptive ensemble optimization technique to simulate dense Lennard-Jones fluids and a particle-solvent model by broad-histogram Monte Carlo techniques. Equilibration of the simulated fluid is improved by sampling an optimized histogram in radial coordinates that shifts statistical weight towards the entropic barriers between the shells of the liquid. Interstitial states in the vicinity of these barriers are identified with unprecedented accuracy by sharp signatures in the quickly converging histogram and measurements of the local diffusivity. The radial distribu…
We numerically investigated the connection between isobaric fragility and the properties of high-order stationary points of the potential energy surface in different supercooled Lennard-Jones mixtures. The increase of effective activation energies upon supercooling appears to be driven by the increase of average potential energy barriers measured by the energy dependence of the fraction of unstable modes. Such an increase is sharper, the more fragile is the mixture. Correlations between fragility and other properties of high-order stationary points, including the vibrational density of states …
We use the results derived in the framework of the replica approach to study the liquid-glass thermodynamic transition. The main results are rederived without using replicas and applied to the study of the Lennard-Jones binary mixture introduced by Kob and Andersen. We find that there is a phase transition due to the entropy crisis. We compute both analytically and numerically the value of the phase transition point $T_{K}$ and the specific heat in the low temperature phase.
A slab based long range correction approach for multi-site Lennard-Jones models is presented for systems with a planar film geometry that is based on the work by Janecek, J. Phys. Chem. B 110: 6264 (2006). It is efficient because it relies on a center-of-mass cutoff scheme and scales in terms of numerics almost perfectly with the molecule number. For validation, a series of simulations with the two-center Lennard-Jones model fluid, carbon dioxide and cyclohexane is carried out. The results of the present approach, a site-based long range correction and simulations without any long range correc…
We investigate solid-solid and solid-liquid transitions of elastic flexible off-lattice polymers with Lennard-Jones monomer-monomer interaction and anharmonic springs by means of sophisticated variants of multicanonical Monte Carlo methods. We find that the low-temperature behavior depends strongly and non-monotonically on the system size and exhibits broad similarities to unbound atomic clusters. Particular emphasis is dedicated to the classification of icosahedral and non-icosahedral low-energy polymer morphologies.
We conduct a numerical investigation of structural order in the shifted-force Lennard-Jones system by calculating metrics of translational and bond-orientational order along various paths in the phase diagram covering equilibrium solid, liquid, and vapor states. A series of non-equilibrium configurations generated through isochoric quenches, isothermal compressions, and energy minimizations are also considered. Simulation results are analyzed using an ordering map representation [Torquato et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2064 (2000); Truskett et al., Phys. Rev. E 62, 993 (2000)] that assigns to bo…
Lennard-Jones glasses (made on a computer by quenching from liquid state coordinates) are studied in harmonic approximation. Vibrational eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors are found by exact diagonalization for models with periodic boundaries and N=(500, 2048, and 6980) atoms. We analyze the density of states, mobility edge, and bond-stretching character of the normal modes. In agreement with older work of Grest, Nagel, and Rahman, the upper 7% of modes are localized, and the rest, delocalized. We find that modes can not be differentiated by any property or quantum number except their eigenfreq…
The off-equilibrium dynamics of a monatomic Lennard-Jones glass is investigated after sudden isothermal density jumps (crunch) from well equilibrated liquid configurations towards the glassy state. The generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation has been studied and the temperature dependence of the violation factor m is found in agreement with the one step replica symmetry breaking scenario, i.e. at low temperature m(T) is found proportional to T up to an off-equilibrium effective temperature T_eff, where m(T_eff)=1. We report T_eff as a function of the density and compare it with the glass …
Liquids displaying strong virial-potential energy correlations conform to an approximate density scaling of their structural and dynamical observables. This scaling property does not extend to the entire phase diagram, in general. The validity of the scaling can be quantified by a correlation coefficient. In this work a simple scheme to predict the correlation coefficient and the density-scaling exponent is presented. Although this scheme is exact only in the dilute gas regime or in high dimension d, a comparison with results from molecular dynamics simulations in d = 1 to 4 shows that it repr…
Results for the kinetics of vapor-liquid phase transition have been presented from the molecular dynamics simulations of a single component two-dimensional Lennard-Jones fluid. The phase diagram for the model, primary prerequisite for this purpose, has been obtained via the Monte Carlo simulations. Our focus is on the region very close to the vapor branch of the coexistence curve. Quenches to such region provide morphology that consists of disconnected circular liquid clusters in the vapor background. We identified that these clusters exhibit diffusive motion and grow via sticky collisions amo…
We investigate the jump motion among potential energy minima of a Lennard-Jones model glass former by extensive computer simulation. From the time series of minima energies, it becomes clear that the energy landscape is organized in superstructures, called metabasins. We show that diffusion can be pictured as a random walk among metabasins, and that the whole temperature dependence resides in the distribution of waiting times. The waiting time distribution exhibits algebraic decays: $τ^{-1/2}$ for very short times and $τ^{-α}$ for longer times, where $α\approx2$ near $T_c$. We demonstrate that…
We present a computer simulation study of a (6,12)-Lennard-Jones fluid confined to a slit pore, formed by two uniform planes. These interact via (3,9)-Lennard-Jones potential with the fluid particles. When the fluid approaches the liquid-to-solid transition we first observe layering parallel to the walls. In order to investigate the nature of the freezing transition we performed a detailed analysis of the bond-orientational order parameter in the layers. We found no signs of hexatic order which would indicate a melting scenario of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type. An analysis of the mean-square di…
The manner in which the intermolecular potential u(r) governs structural relaxation in liquids is a long standing problem in condensed matter physics. Herein we show that diffusion coefficients for simulated Lennard-Jones m-6 liquids (8<m<36) in normal and moderately supercooled states are a unique function of the variable rho^g/T, where rho is density and T is temperature. The scaling exponent g is a material specific constant whose magnitude is related to the steepness of the repulsive part of u(r), evaluated around the distance of closest approach between particles probed in the supercooled…
Longitudinal and transverse sound velocities of Lennard-Jones systems are calculated at the liquid-solid coexistence using the additivity principle. The results are shown to agree well with the ``exact'' values obtained from their relations to excess energy and pressure. Some consequences, in particular, in the context of the Lindemann's melting rule and Stokes-Einstein relation between the self-diffusion and viscosity coefficients are discussed. Comparison with available experimental data on the sound velocities of solid argon at melting conditions is provided.
We analyze one thousand independent equilibrium trajectories of a system of 155 Lennard Jones particles to separate in a model-free approach the role of temperature and the role of the explored potential energy landscape basin depth in the particle dynamics. We show that the diffusion coefficient $D$ can be estimated as a sum over over contributions of the sampled basins, establishing a connection between thermodynamics and dynamics in the potential energy landscape framework. We provide evidence that the observed non-linearity in the relation between local diffusion and basin depth is respons…
We have established the surface tension relaxation time in the liquid-solid interfaces of Lennard-Jones (LJ) liquids by means of direct measurements in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The main result is that the relaxation time is found to be weakly dependent on the molecular structures used in our study and lies in such a range that in slow hydrodynamic motion the interfaces are expected to be at equilibrium. The implications of our results for the modelling of dynamic wetting processes and interpretation of dynamic contact angle data are discussed.
The previous paper [Veldhorst et al., J. Chem. Phys. 141, 054904 (2014)] demonstrated that the isomorph theory explains the scaling properties of a liquid of flexible chains consisting of ten Lennard-Jones particles connected by rigid bonds. We here investigate the same model with harmonic bonds. The introduction of harmonic bonds almost completely destroys the correlations in the equilibrium fluctuations of the potential energy and the virial. According to the isomorph theory, if these correlations are strong a system has isomorphs, curves in the phase diagram along which structure, dynamics …
Solvent-mediated interactions emerge from complex mechanisms that depend on the solute structure, its wetting properties and the nature of the liquid. While numerous studies have focused on the two first influences, here, we compare results from water and Lennard-Jones liquid in order to reveal to what extent solvent-mediated interactions are universal with respect to the nature of the liquid. Besides the influence of the liquid, results were obtained with classical density functional theory and brute-force molecular dynamics simulations which allows us to contrast these two numerical techniqu…
The existence and origin of line tension has remained controversial in literature. To address this issue we compute the shape of Lennard-Jones nanodrops using molecular dynamics and compare them to density functional theory in the approximation of the sharp kink interface. We show that the deviation from Young's law is very small and would correspond to a typical line tension length scale (defined as line tension divided by surface tension) similar to the molecular size and decreasing with Young's angle. We propose an alternative interpretation based on the geometry of the interface at the mol…
The ground-state of two-dimensional (2D) systems of classical particles interacting pairwisely by the generalized Lennard-Jones potential is studied. Taking the surface area per particle $A$ as a free parameter and restricting oneself to periodic Bravais lattices with one particle per unit cell, Bétermin L [2018 Nonlinearity {\bf 31} 3973] proved that the hexagonal, rhombic, square and rectangular structures minimize successively the interaction energy per particle as $A$ increases. We show here that the second-order transitions between the rhombic/square and square/rectangular phases are of m…
Analyzing three approximate methods to locate liquid-solid coexistence in simple systems, an observation is made that all of them predict the same functional dependence of the temperature on density at freezing and melting of the conventional Lennard-Jones system. The emerging equations can be written as $T={\mathcal A}ρ^4+{\mathcal B}ρ^2$ in normalized units. We suggest to determine the values of the coefficients ${\mathcal A}$ at freezing and melting from the high-temperature limit, governed by the inverse twelfth power repulsive potential. The coefficients ${\mathcal B}$ can be determined f…
Properties of local minima as a function of density are studied in a binary Lennard-Jones system for kinetic equipartition temperatures $T=1.0$ (normal liquid), 0.5 (supercooled liquid), and 0.4 (glass), in reduced units. The number of different local minima sampled, energy, pressure, normal mode angular frequencies, mean distance between all pairs of local minima and partial radial distribution functions are presented. In agreement with previous studies by Sastry [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 85}, 590 (2000)] a limiting density is found at $ρ_l=1.06$ with negative pressure, below which the local str…
In a recent paper [S. Khrapak, Molecules {\bf 25}, 3498 (2000)] the longitudinal and transverse sound velocities of conventional Lennard-Jones systems at the liquid-solid coexistence were calculated. It was shown that the sound velocities remain almost invariant along the liquid-solid coexistence boundary lines and that their magnitudes are comparable with those of repulsive soft sphere and hard sphere models at the fluid-solid phase transition. This implies that attraction does not affect the magnitude of sound velocities at the fluid-solid phase transition. This paper provides further eviden…
It is demonstrated that properly reduced transport coefficients (self-diffusion, shear viscosity, and thermal conductivity) of Lennard-Jones fluids along isotherms exhibit quasi-universal scaling on the density divided by its value at the freezing point. Moreover, this scaling is closely related to the density scaling of transport coefficients of hard-sphere fluids. The Stokes-Einstein relation without the hydrodynamic diameter is valid in the dense fluid regime. The lower density boundary of its validity can serve as a practical demarcation line between gas-like and liquid-like regimes.
We describe short-time kinetic and steady-state properties of the non--equilibrium phases, namely, solid, liquid and gas anisotropic phases in a driven Lennard-Jones fluid. This is a computationally-convenient two-dimensional model which exhibits a net current and striped structures at low temperature, thus resembling many situations in nature. We here focus on both critical behavior and details of the nucleation process. In spite of the anisotropy of the late--time spinodal decomposition process, earlier nucleation seems to proceed by Smoluchowski coagulation and Ostwald ripening, which are k…
