The electromagnetic properties of the baryon decuplet are calculated in quenched QCD on a 20^3 x 40 lattice with a lattice spacing of 0.128 fm using the fat-link irrelevant clover (FLIC) fermion action with quark masses providing a pion mass as low as 300 MeV. Magnetic moments and charge radii are extracted from the electric and magnetic form factors for each individual quark sector. From these, the corresponding baryon properties are constructed. We present results for the higher order moments of the spin-3/2 baryons, including the electric quadrupole moment E2 and the magnetic octupole moment M3. The world's first determination of a non-zero M3 form factor for the Delta baryon is presented. With these results we provide a conclusive analysis which shows that decuplet baryons are deformed. We compare the decuplet baryon results from a similar lattice calculation of the octet baryons. We establish that the environment sensitivity is far less pronounced in the case of the decuplet baryons compared to that in the octet baryons. A surprising result is that the charge radii of the decuplet baryons are generally smaller than that of the octet baryons. The magnetic moment of the Delta^+ reveals a turn over in the low quark mass region, making it smaller than the proton magnetic moment. These results are consistent with the expectations of quenched chiral perturbation theory. A similar turn over is also noticed in the magnetic moment of the Sigma^*0, but not for Xi^* where only kaon loops can appear in quenched QCD. The electric quadrupole moment of the Omega^- baryon is positive when the negative charge factor is included, and is equal to 0.86 +- 0.12 x 10^-2 fm^2, indicating an oblate shape.
We present work designed to compute baryon masses on $N_f = 2 + 1$ CLS ensembles including isospin-breaking effects due to non-degenerate light quark masses and electromagnetic interactions. These effects are determined at leading order via a perturbative expansion around the iso-symmetric theory. We furthermore apply a group-theoretical operator construction for the various interpolators describing the different members of the baryon octet and decuplet based on a classification by spin, parity, and flavor content.
The spectra of octet and decuplet baryons are studied using SU(3) lattice QCD at the quenched level. As an implementation to reduce the statistical fluctuation, we employ the anisotropic lattice with $O(a)$ improved quark action. In relation to $Λ(1405)$, we measure also the mass of the SU(3) flavor-singlet negative-parity baryon, which is described as a three quark state in the quenched lattice QCD, and its lowest mass is measured about 1.6 GeV. Since the experimentally observed negative-parity baryon $Λ(1405)$ is much lighter than 1.6 GeV, $Λ(1405)$ may include a large component of a $N \bar…
A lattice QCD study of the strong decay width and coupling constant of decuplet baryons to an octet baryon - pion state is presented. The transfer matrix method is used to obtain the overlap of lattice states with decuplet baryon quantum numbers on the one hand and octet baryon-pion quantum numbers on the other as an approximation to the matrix element of the corresponding transition. By making use of leading order effective field theory, the coupling constants, as well as the widths for the various decay channels are determined. The transitions studied are $ Δ\to π\,N$, $Σ^* \to Λ\,π$, $Σ^* \…
We report a new analysis of the isospin splittings within the decuplet baryon spectrum. Our numerical results are based upon five ensembles of dynamical QCD+QED lattices. The analysis is carried out within a flavour-breaking expansion which encodes the effects of breaking the quark masses and electromagnetic charges away from an approximate SU(3) symmetric point. The results display total isospin splittings within the approximate SU(2) multiplets that are compatible with phenomenological estimates. Further, new insight is gained into these splittings by separating the contributions arising fro…
We study the isospin symmetry breaking and mass splittings of the eight lowest-lying baryons. We consider three kinds of baryon mass terms, including the bare mass term, the electromagnetic terms and the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking terms. We include the mixing term between flavor-octet and flavor-decuplet baryons. This assumes that the lowest-lying Sigma and Xi baryons contain a few decuplet components and so are not purely flavor-octet. We achieve a good fitting that the difference between every fitted mass and its experimental value is less than 0.2 MeV.
We calculate the coupling constant and decay width of the decuplet to octet baryon transitions in lattice QCD using the transfer matrix method. The transition amplitude is related to the coupling constant and via the Fermi's Golden Rule to the decay width. The method is applicable for near-degeneracy of the energy levels of initial and final states and, when this condition is fulfilled, yields a good estimate of the decay width. We present results using a hybrid action with domain wall valence quarks on a staggered sea with $350$ MeV pion mass as well as for a domain wall fermion action with $…
The axial-vector form factors and axial-vector constants of the baryon decuplet are investigated within a pion mean-field approach, which is also known as the chiral quark-soliton model. Given an axial-vector current with a specified flavor, there are four different form factors of a decuplet baryon. When we consider the singlet, triplet, and octet axial-vector currents, we have twelve different form factors for each member of the baryon decuplet. We compute all these axial-vector form factors of the baryon decuplet, taking into account the rotational $1/N_c$ corrections and effects of flavor …
The masses of the spin-3/2 baryons are calculated to next-to-next-to-leading order in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and partially quenched heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The calculation is performed for three light flavors in the isospin limit. These results are necessary for extrapolating QCD and partially quenched QCD lattice calculations of the decuplet baryon masses.
We calculate decuplet contributions to the s-wave pseudoscalar meson octet-baryon scattering lengths to the third order in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HB$χ$PT). Using experimental pion-nucleon and kaon-nucleon scattering lengths as inputs, we determine low-energy constants and predict other meson-baryon scattering lengths. Numerically we consider three cases: (1) the case with only baryon octet contributions; (2) with decuplet contributions and (3) in the large N_c limit. Hopefully, the analytical expressions and the predictions are helpful to future investigations of the meson-ba…
We determine the electromagnetic properties of decuplet resonances using chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order. Utilizing a partially quenched charge matrix, we isolate and remove the quark disconnected contractions. This allows us to compare the physical meson loop contributions to the connected contributions, of which the latter are currently calculated using lattice QCD. Finally we determine linear combinations of decuplet resonance and hyperon electromagnetic properties that are exactly independent of disconnected contractions in the isospin limit.
We have systematically investigated the magnetic moments and magnetic form factors of the decuplet baryons to the next-to-next-leading order in the framework of the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Our calculation includes the contributions from both the intermediate decuplet and octet baryon states in the loops. We also calculate the charge and magnetic dipole form factors of the decuplet baryons. Our results may be useful to the chiral extrapolation of the lattice simulations of the decuplet electromagnetic properties.
We extend an earlier study of the baryon magnetic moments in chiral perturbation theory by the explicit inclusion of the spin-3/2 decuplet resonances. We find that the corrections induced by these heavier degrees of freedom are relatively small in a covariant framework where unphysical spin-1/2 modes are removed. Consequently, implementing the leading SU(3)-breaking corrections given by both the baryon and decuplet contributions, we obtain a description of the baryon-octet magnetic moments that is better than the Coleman-Glashow relations. Finally, we discuss the uncertainties and compare betw…
We present an analysis of the lowest-lying decuplet baryon masses in the covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with the extended-on-mass-shell scheme up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. In order to determine the $14$ low-energy constants, we perform a simultaneous fit of the $n_f=2+1$ lattice QCD data from the PACS-CS, QCDSF-UKQCD, and HSC Collaborations, taking finite-volume corrections into account self-consistently. We show that up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order one can achieve a good description of the lattice QCD and experimental data. Surprisingly, we note that t…
We compute the octet baryon charge radii to O(1/Heavy^3) in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We examine the effect of including the decuplet of spin-3/2 baryons explicitly. We find that it does no t improve the level of agreement between the HBchiPT and experimental values for the Sigma^- charge radius.
We calculate baryon decuplet to octet electromagnetic transition form factors in quenched and partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. We work in the isospin limit of SU(3) flavor, up to next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, and to leading order in the heavy baryon expansion. Our results are necessary for proper extrapolation of lattice calculations of these transitions. We also derive expressions for the case of SU(2) flavor away from the isospin limit.
We extend a previous analysis of the lowest-lying octet baryon masses in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) by explicitly taking into account the contribution of the virtual decuplet baryons. Up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO), the effects of these heavier degrees of freedom are systematically studied. Their effects on the light-quark mass dependence of the octet baryon masses are shown to be relatively small and can be absorbed by the available low-energy constants up to N$^3$LO. Nevertheless, a better description of the finite-volume corrections of the latt…
The magnetic moment - a function of the electric charge form factor $F_{1}(q^{2})$ and the magnetic dipole form factor $F_{2}(q^{2})$ at zero four-momentum transfer $q^{2}$-of the ground-state $J^{P}=(3/2)^{+}$ baryon decuplet magnetic moments have been studied for many years with limited success. At present, only the magnetic moment of the $Ω^{-}$ has been accurately determined. We calculate nonperturbatively the magnetic moments of the \emph{physical baryon decuplet $J^{P}=(3/2)^{+}$} members and in particular, we obtain $μ_{Δ^{++}}= (+3.67 \pm 0.07) μ_{N}$, $μ_{Δ^{+}}= (+1.83 \pm 0.04) μ_{N…
We have systematically investigated the decuplet (T) to octet (B) baryon ($T\rightarrow Bγ$) transition magnetic moments to the next-to-next-to-leading order and electric quadruple moments to the next-to-leading order in the framework of the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Our calculation includes the contributions from both the intermediate decuplet and octet baryon states in the loops. Our results show reasonably good convergence of the chiral expansion and agreement with the experimental data. The analytical expressions may be useful to the chiral extrapolation of the lattice simul…
We calculate electromagnetic properties of the decuplet baryons in quenched and partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. We work at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, leading order in the heavy baryon expansion, and obtain expressions for the magnetic moments, charge radii, and electric quadrupole moments. The quenched calculation is shown to be pathological since only quenched chiral singularities are present at this order. We present the partially quenched results for both the SU(2) and SU(3) flavor groups and use the isospin limit in the latter. These results are necessary…
We compute the quark-mass dependence of the baryon octet and decuplet masses within the $χ$-MS scheme at the one-loop level. The results are confronted with recent lattice QCD simulations of the MILC collaboration. A fair reproduction of the quark-mass dependence as suggested by the lattice simulations is obtained up to pion masses of about 700 MeV. Based on the chiral one-loop results we predict that the dependence of the baryon octet and decuplet masses on the quark-masses is discontinuous. Typically the pion-mass dependence is smooth up to about 300 MeV only. This is a consequence of self c…
We investigate the axial-vector transition form factors of the baryon octet to the baryon decuplet within the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model, with the effects of flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking included. We consider the rotational $1/N_c$ corrections and regard the strange current quark mass as a perturbation. We compare the present results for the $Δ\to N$ axial-vector transition with those from other models and lattice QCD. We also compute all possible axial-vector transitions from the baryon decuplet to the octet with the strangeness changed, i.e., $|ΔS|=1$. We obtain the value …
The properties of the ground state $U$-Spin $={3/2}$ baryon decuplet magnetic moments $Δ^{-}$, $Ξ^{* -}$, $Σ^{* -}$ and $Ω^{-}$ and their ground state spin 1/2 cousins $p$, $n$, $Λ$, $Σ^{+}$, $Σ^{0}$, $Σ^{-}$, $Ξ^{+}$, and $Ξ^{-}$ have been studied for many years with a modicum of success. The magnetic moments of many are yet to be determined. Of the decuplet baryons, only the magnetic moment of the $Ω^{-}$ has been accurately determined. We calculate the magnetic moments of the \emph{physical} decuplet $U$-Spin $={3/2}$ quartet members without ascribing any specific form to their quark struct…
We study decuplet baryons from meson-baryon interactions, in particular, $Δ$ and $Ω$ baryons from P-wave $I=3/2$ $Nπ$ and $I=0$ $Ξ\bar{K}$ interactions, respectively. The interaction potentials are calculated in the HAL QCD method using 3-quark-type source operators at $m_π \approx 410~\textrm{MeV}$. We use the conventional stochastic estimation of all-to-all propagators combined with the all-mode averaging to reduce statistical fluctuations. We have found that two potentials have quite similar behaviors, suggesting that a mass difference between $Δ$ and $Ω$ comes mainly from a difference of k…
We study negative-parity baryon spectra in quenched anisotropic lattice QCD. The negative-parity baryons are measured as the parity partner of the ground-state baryons. In addition to the flavor octet and decuplet baryons, we pay much attention to the flavor-singlet negative-parity baryon as a three-quark state and compare it with the Lambda(1405) baryon. Numerical results of the flavor octet and decuplet negative-parity baryon masses are close to experimental values of lowest-lying negative-parity baryons, while the flavor-singlet baryon is much heavier than Lambda(1405). This indicates that …
We investigate the electromagnetic transition form factors of the baryon decuplet to the baryon octet, based on the self-consistent SU(3) chiral quark-soliton model, taking into account the effects of explicit breaking of flavor SU(3) symmetry. We emphasize the $Q^2$ dependence of the electromagnetic $N\to Δ$ transition form factors and the ratios of $E2/M1$ and $C2/M1$ in comparison with the experimental and empirical data. In order to compare the present results of the electromagnetic transition form factors of the $N\to Δ$ with those from lattice QCD, we evaluate the form factors with the p…
In the approach to hadronic flavour symmetries based on the q-algebras U_q(su_N) and proved to be realistic, the known construction of U_q(su_N) in terms of anyonic oscillators residing on 2d lattice is utilized. Anyonic Fock-like realization of basis state vectors is given for baryons (3/2)^+ from the 10-plet of U_q(su_3) embedded, via 20-plet of U_q(su_4), into the "dynamical" representation [4000] of U_q(su_5). Within the anyonic picture, we reobtain the universal q-deformed decuplet mass relation M_Ω-M_{Ξ^*}+M_{Σ^*}-M_Δ=[2]_q (M_{Ξ^*}-M_{Σ^*}), where [2]_q=q+q^{-1}=2 cosθ. Consistency with…
A continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in quantum field theory, employing parametrisations of the necessary kernel elements, is used to compute the spectrum and Poincaré-covariant wave functions for all flavour-$SU(3)$ octet and decuplet baryons and their first positive-parity excitations. Such analyses predict the existence of nonpointlike, dynamical quark-quark (diquark) correlations within all baryons; and a uniformly sound description of the systems studied is obtained by retaining flavour-antitriplet--scalar and flavour-sextet--pseudovector diquarks. Thus cons…
We study the octet to decuplet baryon electromagnetic transitions using the covariant spectator quark model, and predict the transition magnetic dipole form factors for those involving the strange baryons. Utilizing SU(3) symmetry, the valence quark contributions are supplemented by the pion cloud dressing based on the one estimated in the $γ^\ast N \to Δ$ reaction. Although the valence quark contributions are dominant in general, the pion cloud effects turn out to be very important to describe the experimental data. We also show that, other mesons besides the pion in particular the kaon, may …
We present a calculation of the leading SU(3)-breaking $\mathcal{O}(p^3)$-corrections to the electromagnetic moments and charge radius (CR) of the lowest-lying decuplet resonances in covariant chiral perturbation theory. In particular, the magnetic dipole moment (MDM) of the members of the decuplet is predicted fixing the only low-energy constant (LEC) present up to this order with the well measured MDM of the $Ω^-$. We predict $μ_Δ^{++}=6.04(13)$ and $μ_Δ^+=2.84(2)$ which agree well with the current experimental information. For the electric quadrupole moment (EQM) and the CR we use state-of-…
We study finite-volume effects on the masses of the ground-state octet baryons using covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) up to next-to-leading order by analyzing the latest $n_f=2+1$ lattice Quantum ChromoDynamics (LQCD) results from the NPLQCD collaboration. Contributions of virtual decuplet baryons are taken into account using the "consistent" coupling scheme. We compare our results with those obtained from heavy baryon ChPT and show that, although both approaches can describe well the lattice data, the underlying physics is different: In HBChPT, virtual decuplet baryons play …
We review the quark-mass dependence of the baryon octet and decuplet masses as obtained from recent lattice simulations of the BMW, PACS-CS, LHPC, HSC and QCDSF-UKQCD groups. Our discussion relies on the relativistic chiral Lagrangian and large-$N_c$ sum rule estimates of the counter terms relevant for the baryon masses at N$^3$LO. A partial summation is implied by the use of physical baryon and meson masses in the one-loop contributions to the baryon self energies. In our analysis the physical masses are reproduced exactly by means of a suitable set of linear constraints. A quantitative and s…
Anti-decuplet penta-quark baryon is studied with the quenched anisotropic lattice QCD for accurate measurement of the correlator. Both the positive and negative parity states are studied using a non-NK type interpolating field with I=0 and J=1/2. After the chiral extrapolation, the lowest positive parity state is found at m_{Theta} \simeq 2.25 GeV, which is too massive to be identified with the experimentally observed Theta^+(1540). The lowest negative parity state is found at m_{Theta}\simeq 1.75 GeV, which is rather close to the empirical value. To confirm that this state is a compact 5Q res…
We compute the strangeness content of the baryon octet and decuplet states based on an analysis of recent lattice simulations of the BMW, PACS, LHPC and HSC groups for the pion-mass dependence of the baryon masses. Our results rely on the relativistic chiral Lagrangian and large-$N_c$ sum rule estimates of the counter terms relevant for the baryon masses at N$^3$LO. A partial summation is implied by the use of physical baryon and meson masses in the one-loop contributions to the baryon self energies. A simultaneous description of the lattice results of the BMW, LHPC, PACS and HSC groups is ach…
Magnetic properties of octet baryons are investigated within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. Utilizing a power counting for large magnetic fields, the Landau levels of charged mesons are treated exactly giving rise to baryon energies that depend non-analytically on the strength of the magnetic field. In the small-field limit, baryon magnetic moments and polarizabilities emerge from the calculated energies. We argue that the magnetic polarizabilities of hyperons provide a testing ground for potentially large contributions from decuplet pole diagrams. In external magnetic fields, su…
We obtain from the quark-gluon dynamics, the Gell'Mann-Ne'eman eightfold way baryons in an imaginary-time functional integral formulation of 3+1 lattice QCD in the strong coupling regime (small hopping parameter $κ>0$). The model has ${\rm SU}(3)_c$ gauge and global ${\rm SU}(3)_f$ flavor symmetries. In the subspace of the physical Hilbert space of vectors with an odd number of quarks, the baryons are associated with isolated dispersion curves in the energy-momentum spectrum. The spin 1/2 octet and spin 3/2 decuplet baryons have asymptotic mass $-3\lnκ$ and for each baryon there is an antibary…
We perform a chiral extrapolation of the baryon octet and decuplet masses in a relativistic formulation of chiral perturbation theory. A partial summation is assumed as implied by the use of physical baryon and meson masses in the one-loop diagrams. Upon a chiral expansion, our results are consistent with strict chiral perturbation theory at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. All counter terms are correlated by a large-$N_c$ operator analysis. Our results are confronted with recent results of unquenched three-flavor lattice simulations. We adjust the parameter set to the pion-mass depe…
