Remarks on Finite Subset Spaces

This paper expands on and refines some known and less well-known results about the finite subset spaces of a simplicial complex $X$ including their connectivity and their top homology groups. It also discusses the inclusion of the singletons into the three fold subset space and shows that this subspace is weakly contractible but generally non-contractible unless $X$ is a co-$H$ group. Some homological calculations are provided.

Remarks on the homotopy type of intersections of two real Bruhat cells

In a companion manuscript, we introduce a stratification of intersections of a top dimensional real Bruhat cells with another arbitrary cell. This intersection is naturally identified with a subset of the lower triangular group: these subsets are labeled by elements of a finite group, the lift to the spin group of the intersection of a Coxeter group with the special orthogonal group. In this note we give an improvement of our proof of $[G, L]=0$ for a compact framed Lie group $(G, L)$, which depends heavily on the choice of a circle subgroup $S\subset G$. We attempt here to make a more suitable choice of this circle subgroup.

Two remarks on Wall's D2 problem

If a finite group $G$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of $SO(3)$, then $G$ has the D2-property. Let $X$ be a finite complex satisfying Wall's D2-conditions. A remark on the higher torsion invariants for flat vector bundles with finite holonomy

We show that the Igusa-Klein topological torsion and the Bismut-Lott analytic torsion are equivalent for any flat vector bundle whose holonomy is a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Q})$. Our proof uses Artin's induction theorem in representation theory to reduce the problem to the special case of trivial flat line bundles, which is a recent result of Puchol, Zhu and the second author. The idea of using Artin's induction theorem appeared in a paper of Ohrt on the same topic, of which our present work is an improvement.

Remarks on the cohomology of finite fundamental groups of 3-manifolds

Computations based on explicit 4-periodic resolutions are given for the cohomology of the finite groups G known to act freely on S^3, as well as the cohomology rings of the associated 3-manifolds (spherical space forms) M = S^3/G. Chain approximations to the diagonal are constructed, and explicit contracting homotopies also constructed for the cases G is a generalized quaternion group, the binary tetrahedral group, or the binary octahedral group. Some applications are briefly discussed.
