We have obtained spectra of the W Sgr system with the STIS spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. The spectra resolve the system into a distant companion B which is the hottest star in the system and the spectroscopic binary (A = Aa + Ab). A and B are separated by 0.16". We have extracted the spectra of both of these. We see no flux in the Aa + Ab spectrum which cannot be accounted for by the Cepheid, and put an upper limit on the spectral type and mass of the companion Ab of F5 V and $\leq$1.4Msun. Using the orbit from HST FGS measurements from Benedict, et al., this results in an upper limit to the mass of the Cepheid of $\leq$5.4Msun. We also discuss two possible distant companions. Based on photometry from the 2MASS Point Source Catalog, they are not physical companions of the W Sgr system.
V350 Sgr is a classical Cepheid suitable for mass determination. It has a hot companion which is prominent in the ultraviolet and which is not itself a binary. We have obtained two high resolution echelle spectra of the companion at orbital velocity maximum and minimum with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) in the 1320 to 1510 Å\/ region. By cross-correlating these spectra we obtained the orbital velocity amplitude of the companion with an uncertainty in the companion amplitude of 1.9 km sec$^{-1}$. This provides a mass ratio of the Cepheid to the com…
We aim at detecting and characterizing the main-sequence companions of a sample of known and suspected Galactic binary Cepheids. We used the multi-telescope interferometric combiners MIRC and PIONIER to detect and measure the astrometric positions of the high-contrast companions orbiting 16 bright Galactic Cepheids. We made use of the CANDID algorithm to search for the companions and set detection limits. We also present new high-precision RVs which were used to fit radial pulsation and orbital velocities. We report the detection of the companions orbiting the Cepheids U Aql, BP Cir, and S Mus…
Context. The multiplicity of classical Cepheids (CCs) and RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) is still imperfectly known, particularly for RRLs. Aims. In order to complement the close-in short orbital period systems presented in Paper I, our aim is to detect the wide, spatially resolved companions of the targets of our reference samples of Galactic CCs and RRLs. Methods. Angularly resolved common proper motion pairs were detected using a simple progressive selection algorithm to separate the most probable candidate companions from the unrelated field stars. Results. We found 27 resolved, high probability gr…
Classical Cepheids (CCs) and RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) are important classes of variable stars used as standard candles to estimate galactic and extragalactic distances. Their multiplicity is imperfectly known, particularly for RRLs. Astoundingly, to date only one RRL has convincingly been demonstrated to be a binary, TU UMa, out of tens of thousands of known RRLs. Our aim is to detect the binary and multiple stars present in a sample of Milky Way CCs and RRLs. In the present article, we combine the Hipparcos and Gaia DR2 positions to determine the mean proper motion of the targets, and we search …
We report new CHARA/MIRC interferometric observations of the Cepheid archetype $δ$ Cep, which aimed at detecting the newly discovered spectroscopic companion. We reached a maximum dynamic range $ΔH $ = 6.4, 5.8, and 5.2 mag, respectively within the relative distance to the Cepheid $r < 25$ mas, $25 < r < 50$ mas and $50 < r < 100$ mas. Our observations did not show strong evidence of a companion. We have a marginal detection at $3σ$ with a flux ratio of 0.21\%, but nothing convincing as we found other possible probable locations. We ruled out the presence of companion with a spectral type earl…
The distance to pulsating stars is classically estimated using the parallax-of-pulsation (PoP) method, which combines spectroscopic radial velocity measurements and angular diameter estimates to derive the distance of the star. An important application of this method is the determination of Cepheid distances, in view of the calibration of their distance scale. However, the conversion of radial to pulsational velocities in the PoP method relies on a poorly calibrated parameter, the projection factor (p-factor). We aim to measure empirically the value of the p-factors of a homogeneous sample of …
X-ray observations have been made of a sample of 20 classical Cepheids, including two new observations (Polaris and {\it l} Car) reported here. The occurrence of X-ray flux around the pulsation cycle is discussed. Three Cepheids are detected ($δ$ Cep, $β$ Dor, and Polaris). X-rays have also been detected from the low--mass F, G, and K companions of 4 Cepheids (V473 Lyr, R Cru, V659 Cen, and W Sgr), and one hot companion (S Mus). Upper limits on the X-ray flux of the remaining Cepheids provide an estimate that 28\% have low mass companions. This fraction of low--mass companions in intermediate …
The VELOCE modulation zoo III. Detecting additional pulsation modes in optical spectra of classical Cepheids using semi-partial distance correlation periodograms
We use time-resolved spectra from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) to examine the distribution of radial velocity (RV) variations in 249 stars identified as members of the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy by Hayes et al (2020). We select Milky Way (MW) stars that have stellar parameters ($log(g)$, $T_{eff}$, and $[Fe/H]$) similar to those of the Sagittarius members by means of a k-d tree of dimension 3. We find that the shape of the distribution of RV shifts in Sgr dSph stars is similar to that measured in their MW analogs, but the total fract…
We present the results of a multiplicity survey for a magnitude-limited sample of 31 classical Be stars conducted with the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer and the Mark III Stellar Interferometer. The interferometric observations were used to detect companions in ten previously known binary systems. For two of these sources (66 Oph and $β$ Cep) new orbital solutions were obtained, while for a third source ($\upsilon$ Sgr) our observations provide the first direct, visual detection of the hot sdO companion to the Be primary star. Combining our interferometric observations with an extensive…
Discovering wide companions of stellar systems allows us to constrain the dynamical environment and age of the latter. We studied four probable wide companions of four different stellar systems. The central stars are V4046 Sgr, HIP 74865, HIP 65426, and HIP 73145, and their probable wide companions are 2MASS J18152222-3249329, 2MASS J15174874-3028484, 2MASS J13242119-5129503, and 2MASS J14571503-3543505 respectively. V4046 Sgr is a member of $β$-Pictoris Moving Group while the rest of the stellar systems are acknowledged as members of the Scorpius-Centaurus association. The selected stellar sy…
