We discuss some experimental and theoretical results on single spin asymmetries (SSA) in high energy lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron reactions. In particular, recent results on meson SSA obtained by HERMES are considered in detail. We also discuss the SSA results obtained recently by COMPASS, as well as those from BRAHMS, PHENIX and STAR. Special attention is paid to a possible nonperturbative QCD mechanism that might be responsible for the observed meson SSA. This mechanism originates from the spin-flip quark-gluon chromomagnetic interaction induced by the complex topological structure of the QCD vacuum. We argue that in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering a large SSA is expected not only for mesons but also for baryons due to strong nonperturbative final state interactions between $ud$-diquark and $u$-quark in the fragmenting proton.
Some nonperturbative aspects of spin studies at RHIC are discussed and the predictions for single- and two-spin asymmetries are given. Among them are those which emphasize the role of angular orbital momentum in the spin structure of the constituent quarks.
We discuss the possibilities of testing of perturbative quantum chromodynamics through azimuthal asymmetries in polarized ep in the context of future collider and fixed target facilities, such as Electron Ion Collider and TESLA-N.
Recent experimental data on the radiative decays B -> V gamma, where V is a light vector meson, find small isospin violation in B -> K^* gamma while isospin asymmetries in B -> rho gamma are of order 20%, with large uncertainties. Using Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, we calculate isospin asymmetries in these radiative B decays up to O(1/m_b), also including O(v alpha_s) contributions from nonperturbative charming penguins (NPCP). In the absence of NPCP contributions, the theoretical predictions for the asymmetries are a few percent or less. Including the NPCP can significantly increase the i…
The effects of nonperturbatively generated ``quark sea'' have been investigated to determine the flavor structure of the octet baryons. The chiral constituent quark model ($χ$CQM), which is known to provide a satisfactory explanation of the proton spin and related issues in the nonperturbative regime, is able to explain the qualitative generation of the requisite amount of quark sea. The importance of quark sea has been studied at different values of the Bjorken scaling variable $x$ by including it phenomenologically in the sea quark distribution functions. The results for the quark sea asymme…
A new mechanism for single spin asymmetries in strong interaction is proposed. It is based on instanton-induced nonperturbative chromomagnetic quark-gluon interaction. We estimate the contribution of this interaction to single spin asymmetry in quark-quark scattering. It is shown, that interference between quark spin-flip amplitude induced by instantons and spin-nonflip amplitude, which is related to nonperturbative two gluon exchange, gives a large value for a single spin asymmetry. Due to strong increasing of the instanton-induced spin-flip amplitude with energy, this asymmetry does not vani…
This paper explores a new mechanism for B production in which a b quark combines with a light parton from the hard-scattering process before hadronizing into the B hadron. This recombination mechanism can be calculated within perturbative QCD up to a few nonperturbative constants. Though suppressed at large transverse momentum by a factor Lambda_QCD m_b/p_t^2 relative to b quark fragmentation production, it can be important at large rapidities. A signature for this heavy-quark recombination mechanism in proton-antiproton colliders is the presence of rapidity asymmetries in B cross sections. Gi…
We discuss a nonperturbative mechanism for generation of the single-spin asymmetries in hadron interactions. It is based on the chiral quark model combined with unitarity and impact parameter picture and provides explanation for the experimental regularities observed under the measurements of the spin asymmetries.
We discuss a nonperturbative mechanism for one-spin asymmetries in inclusive hadron production. The main role in generation of this asymmetry belongs to the orbital angular momentum of quark-antiquark cloud in internal structure of constituent quarks.
We will give convincing arguments to view transverse spin asymmetries in inclusive reactions, as very exciting observables, although there were considered as irrelevant for a long time. We look forward to new high energy data in the near future.
The observation of jets in a variety of hard-scattering processes has allowed the quantitative study of perturbative quantum chromodynamics (PQCD) by comparing detailed theoretical predictions with a wide range of experimental data. This paper examines how some important, nonperturbative, facets of QCD involving the internal dynamical structure of jets can be studied by measuring the spin orientation of Lambda particles produced in these jets. The measurement of the transverse polarization for an individual Lambda within a QCD jet permits the definition of spin-directed asymmetries in local qu…
We disscuss a new nonperturbative mechanism for spin effects in high energy reactions with hadrons. This mechanism is based on the existence of a large anomalous quark chromomagnetic moment (AQCM) induced by the nontrivial topological structure of QCD vacuum. As an example, we estimate the contribution of this interaction to the single spin asymmetry (SSA) in the inclusive pion production in the proton-proton scattering. We show that SSA induced by AQCM is large and its value is in qualitative agreement with experimental data.
The analysis of some effects caused by the spin--dependent pomeron couplings is presented. It is shown that the structure of pomeron--proton and quark--pomeron couplings can be tested in future polarized experiments on elastic $pp$ reactions and diffractive $Q \bar Q$ production.
Large - distance effects in the hadron wave function for the hadron-Pomeron vertex in the QCD -model are discussed. It is shown that they lead to the spin-flip part of the Pomeron coupling which can reach $10 ÷20 %$ with respect to the non-flip part. The obtained structure of the Pomeron coupling modifies spin asymmetries in high--energy diffractive reactions where the Pomeron structure becomes determinative. We study spin asymmetries in exclusive reactions and in the diffractive $Q \bar Q$ and $J/Ψ$ production. We have found that spin effects in these diffractive processes are sensitive to th…
We comment on theoretical aspects of the measurement of azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive charged particle production, made recently by the ZEUS Collaboration at HERA. By taking the ratio of the two measured asymmetries, we find good agreement between the perturbative QCD prediction and the experimental data. To separate the perturbative and nonperturbative contributions to the asymmetries, we suggest that the azimuthal asymmetries of the transverse energy flow be measured as a function of a variable $q_T$ related to the pseudorapidity of the energy flow.
It is shown that the longitudinal double spin asymmetry $A_{ll}$ in polarized diffractive $Q \bar Q$ production depends strongly on the spin structure of the quark-pomeron vertex. Relevant experiments will be possible at HERA with a polarized proton beam.
We show that the polarization of hyperons observed in high energy collisions using unpolarized hadron beams and unpolarized nucleon or nuclear targets is closely related to the left-right asymmetries observed in single spin inclusive hadron production processes. The relationship is most obvious for the production of the hyperons which have only one common valence quark with the projectile. Further implications of the existence of large polarization for hyperon which has two valence quarks in common with the projectile and their consequences are discussed. A comparison with the available data i…
It is shown that the contribution of the instantons to the fragmentation of quarks leads to the appearance of a imaginary part in diagrams of quark-quark scattering at large transfer momentum. The imaginary part comes from the analytical continuation of the instanton amplitudes from Euclidean to Minkowsky space-time and reflects quasiclassical origin of instanton solution of QCD equations of motion. This phenomenon and instanton--induced quark spin-flip give a new nonperturbative mechanism for the observed anomalous single-spin asymmetries in hadron-hadron and lepton-hadron interactions.
The effects of "quark sea" in determining the flavor structure of the octet baryons have been investigated in the chiral constituent quark model (\chiCQM). The \chiCQM is able to qualitatively generate the requisite amount of quark sea and is also known to provide a satisfactory explanation of the proton spin and related issues in the nonperturbative regime. The Bjorken scaling variable x has been included phenomenologically in the sea quark distribution functions to understand its implications on the quark sea asymmetries like \bar d(x)-\bar (x), \bar d(x)/\bar u(x) and Gottfried integral for…
We consider theoretical background for experimental measurements of single-spin asymmetries. We stress the non-perturbative QCD aspects of observed asymmetries in hadronic reactions.
It is shown that transverse momentum dependent azimuthal spin asymmetries suffer from suppression due to Sudakov factors, in the region where the transverse momentum is much smaller than the large energy scale Q^2. The size and Q^2 dependence of this suppression are studied numerically for two such asymmetries, both arising due to the Collins effect. General features are discussed of how the fall-off with Q^2 is affected by the nonperturbative Sudakov factor and by the transverse momentum weights and angular dependences that appear in different asymmetries. For a subset of asymmetries the asym…
The main focus of this paper is to introduce a new method to control perturbative calculations of CP asymmetric reaction rates in the Boltzmann equation. CP asymmetries in particle reactions are traditionally calculated in terms of complex couplings, Feynman integrals, and Cutkosky rules. We use an expansion of the $S$-matrix unitarity condition instead, obtaining a general expression for the asymmetries without reference to the imaginary part of the loops. Asymmetry cancelations implied by CPT and unitarity are manifested in a diagrammatic way and easy to track at any order of perturbation th…
We calculate the nonperturbative $J/Ψ-N$ and $Ψ'-N$ cross sections with the model of the stochastic vacuum which has been succesfully applied in many high energy reactions. We also give a quantitative discussion of pre-resonance formation and medium effects.
We propose a theoretical framework for analyzing three-body hadronic $B$ meson decays based on the perturbative QCD approach. The crucial nonperturbative input is a two-hadron distribution amplitude for final states, whose involved time-like form factor and rescattering phase are fit to relevant experimental data. Together with the short-distance strong phase from the $b$-quark decay kernel, we are able to make predictions for direct CP asymmetries in, for example, the $B^\pm \to π^+ π^- π^\pm$ and $π^+π^-K^\pm$ modes, which are consistent with the LHCb data in various localized regions of pha…
The study of two spin asymmetries in hadron-hadron collisions probes the details of fundamental particle interactions in ways infeasible to machines with unpolarized collisions. Within reach is how the proton spin is distributed among its constituents through $ΔG$ and $Δ\bar{q}$. Measuring couplings, furthering our understanding jet structure and uncovering new physics are all among the possibilities available at polarized colliders. Spin physics may also deepen our understanding of higher twist behavior and the transition between perturbative and nonperturbative physics. An overview of the do…
Double spin asymmetries in the diffractive $Q \bar Q$ and $J/Ψ$ leptoproduction are discussed. It is shown that the asymmetries for longitudinally polarized lepton and longitudinally or transversely polarized proton can be used to study spin dependent gluon distribution of the proton at small $x$.
This article presents a summary of overlapping presentations by the author to the QCD Evolution 2013 Workshop and to the Opportunities for Polarized Physics at Fermilab Workshop. It contains an introduction to the concept of Kane-Pumplin-Repko (KPR) factorization and descibes how this concept can be used in the analysis of high-precision measurements of parity-conserving transverse single-spin asymmetries. The discussion demonstrates that such measurements can not only probe directly for specific mechanisms that enhance our fundamental understanding of nonperturbative QCD but, because transver…
We present calculations of cross sections and spin asymmetries in single-inclusive reactions in pp scattering. We discuss next-to-leading order predictions as well as all-order soft-gluon threshold resummations.
We study single spin asymmetries at one-loop accuracy in semi-inclusive DIS with a transversely polarized hadron in the initial state. Two measurable spin observables are predicted in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. One of the spin observables is the Sivers weighted asymmetry, another one is the Collins weighted asymmetry. The prediction takes a form of convolutions of perturbative coefficient functions and nonperturbative functions, which are twist-2 transversity distributions, twist-3 parton distributions, twist-2- and twist-3 parton fragmentation functions. These nonperturbati…
We discuss a nonperturbative mechanism for the single-spin asymmetries (SSA) in the strong interaction. This mechanism is based on the existence of a large anomalous quark chromomagnetic moment (AQCM) induced by the nontrivial topological structure of QCD vacuum. Our estimations within the instanton liquid model for QCD vacuum show that AQCM generates very large SSA on the quark level. Therefore, this mechanism can be responsible for the anomalously large SSA observed in different high energy reactions with hadrons.
In this report diffractive high energy reactions are discussed in a functional integral approach where hadronic amplitudes are calculated from vacuum expectation values of lightlike Wegner-Wilson loops. In the first part we calculate elastic differential cross sections for high energy and small momentum transfer elastic proton-proton (pp) scattering which are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data. In the second part we consider exclusive $π^0$ production in ep-scattering. At high energies photon and odderon exchange contribute to this reaction. We show that odderon exchange leads …
Characteristics of the available data are briefly summarized. Different theoretical approaches are reviewed with special attention to a non-perturbative model which explicitly takes the orbital motion of the valence quarks into account. The connection between such asymmetries and hyperon polarization in unpolarized reactions is discussed.
Parity-conserving single-spin asymmetries provide a specific measure of coherent spin-orbit dynamics in quantum chromodynamics. The origin of these effects can be traced to the interplay of chiral dynamics and confinement in the theory. The most elegant display of the relevant mechanisms occurs in the Collins functions and the polarizing fragmentation functions and fracture functions for particles with spin. In the nucleon, these same dynamical mechanisms generate virtual quantum structures leading to the Boer-Mulders functions and orbital distributions. Two complementary formalisms for these …
Under the framework of soft-collinear effective theory, we analyze the charmless $B\to VV$ decays in a global way at leading power in $1/m_b$ and leading order in $α_s$ with $V$ denoting a light vector meson. In the flavor SU(3) symmetry, decay amplitudes for the 28 decay modes are expressed in terms of 8 nonperturbative parameters. With 35 experimental results, we fit these 8 nonperturbative parameters. Annihilation contributions are neglected due to power suppression in the $m_b\to \infty$ limit, so we include in the fit the nonperturbative charm penguins, which will play an important role i…
Light vector meson leptoproduction is analyzed on the basis of the generalized parton distributions. Our results on the cross section and spin effects are in good agrement with experiment at HERA, COMPASS and HERMES energies. Predictions for $A_{UT}$ asymmetry for various reactions are presented.
We study the two-body hadronic $D\to PV$ decays, where $P$ ($V$) denotes a pseudoscalar (vector) meson, in the factorization-assisted topological-amplitude approach proposed in our previous work. This approach is based on the factorization of short-distance and long-distance dynamics into Wilson coefficients and hadronic matrix elements of four-fermion operators, respectively, with the latter being parametrized in terms of several nonperturbative quantities. We further take into account the $ρ$-$ω$ mixing effect, which improves the global fit to the branching ratios involving the $ρ^0$ and $ω$…
It is shown that in reaction γγ\to\ell^+\ell^-+ν's at \sqrt{s}>200 GeV with polarized photons, large and well observable differences arise in the distribution of positive and negative charged leptons (\ell=μ^\pm, e^\pm), (charge asymmetry). The modification due to the contribution of the cascade processes with intermediate τ-lepton in γγ\to W^\pm\ell^\mp + ν's reaction is taken into account. This charge asymmetry is potentially sensitive to effects of physics beyond the standard model at the anticipated luminosity of the Photon Collider mode of the future international linear collider.
We discuss a possible explanation of the 25 year old mystery of the large transverse spin asymmetries found in many semi-inclusive hadron-hadron reactions. We obtain the first reliable information about the transverse polarized quark densities Delta_T q(x) and we find surprising implications for the usual, longitudinal, polarized DIS. The plan of the presentation is as follows: 1) A brief reminder about the internal structure of the nucleon. 2) The transverse asymmetries. 3) Why it is so difficult to explain the asymmetries. 4) Failure and then success using a new soft mechanism. 5) implicatio…
We consider several single spin asymmetries in inclusive, transversely polarized proton(antiproton) - proton processes as higher twist QCD contributions, taking into account spin and intrinsic transverse momentum effects in the quark distribution functions. This approach has been previously applied to the description of the single spin asymmetries observed in transversely polarized proton - proton -> pion + X reactions and all its parameters fixed: we give here predictions for new processes, which agree with experiments for which data are available, and suggest further possible measurements.
The asymmetries between charm and anticharm mesons observed in fixed-target photoproduction experiments are an order of magnitude larger than the asymmetries predicted by conventional perturbative QCD. We show that these charm meson asymmetries can be explained by a heavy-quark recombination mechanism for heavy meson production. In this process, a charm quark combines with a light antiquark from the hard-scattering process and they subsequently hadronize into a state including the charm meson. This recombination mechanism can be calculated within perturbative QCD up to some nonperturbative con…
The $γ^* γ\to πππ$ reaction is analysed in QCD at large photon virtuality Q and small hadronic mass W. Its amplitude factorizes in a $3 π$ generalized distribution amplitude and a hard subprocess $γ^* γ\to q \bar q$ or $γ^* γ\to g g$. The interference of this process with a Brehmsstrahlung process in e e or $e γ$ collisions gives rise to interesting single spin asymmetries, particularly when W is near the $ω$ mass.
The quark recombination mechanism is proposed to explain the asymmetry between production rates of $D^+$ and of $D^-$ in their inclusive productions, and also asymmetries for other charmed hadrons. These asymmetries are observed in experiment and are called as leading particle effects. In this work we give a general analysis for contributions of quark recombination to these asymmetries. The contributions consist of a perturbative- and nonperturbative part. We perform two types of factorization by considering the produced hadron with large transverse momentum and by taking charm quark as a heav…
Transverse single-spin asymmetries (SSA) in inclusive reactions are now considered to be directly related to the transverse momentum $k_{T}$ of the fundamental partons involved in the process. Several possible leading-twist QCD mechanisms have been proposed to explain the available data, in particular the Sivers effect which was resurrected recently. We show that from the measurement of transverse SSA in inclusive production of gauge bosons, one can learn more about the Sivers functions and possibly to achieve a reliable flavor separation.
CP violating effects in the single top quark production via flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) reactions $e^+e^- ->t bar{q}$ and $e^+e^- ->bar{t}q$ (here $q$ refers to charm and up quarks) are studied. The effective Lagrangian description of the FCNC interactions is used. A numerical analysis is performed for some next linear colliders. CP violating asymmetries for the number of $q$ and $\bar{q}$ quarks are obtained to be of order $10^{-2}-10^{-3}$ depending on the CM energy.
Charm asymmetries in fixed-target hadroproduction experiments are sensitive to power corrections to the QCD factorization theorem for heavy quark production. A power correction called heavy-quark recombination has recently been proposed to explain these asymmetries. In heavy-quark recombination, a light quark or antiquark participates in a hard scattering which produces a charm-anticharm quark pair. The light quark or antiquark emerges from the scattering with small momentum in the rest frame of the charm quark, and together they hadronize into a charm particle. The cross section for this proc…
An interplay of perturbative and nonperturbative effects in pomeron, odderon and reggeons dynamics is discussed. It is pointed out that experimental data on pion charge exchange reaction at high energies indicate to a dominance of the nonperturbative string-like dynamics up to rather large momentum transfer. Role of shadowing effects related to triple-pomeron interactions is investigated.
Transverse single-spin asymmetries (SSA) in inclusive reactions are now considered to be directly related to the transverse momentum ${\bf k}_{T}$ of the fundamental partons involved in the process. We find that the ideal probe to extract information on the gluon Sivers function is the transverse SSA of prompt photon production $p p^{\uparrow} \to γX$, at large $p_T$. The following related processes, $p p^{\uparrow} \to γ+ jet + X$, $p p^{\uparrow} \to γ^* + X \to μ^+ μ^- + X$ and $\bar{p} p^{\uparrow} \to γ+ X$ are also briefly discussed.
It is shown that single and double spin asymmetries in polarized diffractive $Q \bar Q$ production depend strongly on the spin structure of the quark-pomeron vertex. They can be studied in future spin experiments at HERA.
The polarization asymmetries of $t$, $\bar t$ quarks can be used in the reaction $e^+e^-\to t\bar tν_e\barν_e$ to measure the Higgs width, in the Standard Model or in its extensions, and to search for non-standard CP violating phases. As an application of the CPT theorem the Higgs width is monitored through a CP-even, $T_N$-odd, polarization asymmetry, $B_y$. CP violation manifests through interference at tree graph level with the resonant Higgs amplitude. Consequently, the asymmetries are all quite sizable and can be in the range of 10--50\% for a wide choice of the Higgs mass.
The Collins mechanism provides a non-perturbative explanation for the large single spin asymmetries found in hard semi-inclusive reactions involving a transversely polarized nucleon. However, there are seemingly convincing reasons to suspect that the mechanism vanishes, and indeed it does vanish in the naive parton model where a quark is regarded as an essentially 'free' particle. We give an intuitive analysis which highlights the difference between the naive picture and the realistic one, and shows how the Collins mechanism arises when the quark is described as an off-shell particle by a fiel…
Expressions for decay amplitudes of B0, B- and Bs mesons to two light pseudoscalar or vector mesons, including isosinglet mesons eta, eta', omega, phi, are obtained using Soft Collinear Effective Theory at LO in 1/mb. These are then used to predict unmeasured branching ratios, direct and indirect CP asymmetries in B0, B- and Bs decays into two light pseudoscalars, following a determination of nonperturbative SCET parameters from existing data using a chi-squared fit. A separate discussion of indirect CP asymmetries in penguin dominated B0 --> eta' K(S/L), pi0 K(S/L) decays is given.
We present Monte Carlo simulations of both the Sivers and the Boer-Mulders effects in the polarized Drell-Yan $π^\pm p^\uparrow \to μ^+ μ^- X$ process at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} \sim 14$ GeV reachable at COMPASS with pion beams of energy 100 GeV. For the Sivers effect, we adopt two different parametrizations for the Sivers function to explore the statistical accuracy required to extract unambiguous information on this parton density. In particular, we verify the possibility of checking its predicted sign change between Semi-Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) and Drell-Yan …
Theoretically there are two approaches to predict single spin azimuthal asymmetries. One is to take transverse momenta of partons into account by using transverse momentum dependent parton distributions, while another is to take asymmetries as a twist-3 effect. The nonperturbative effects in these approaches are parameterized with different matrix elements and predictions can be different. Recently, gauge invariant definitions of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions were derived. With these definitions it can be shown that there are relations between nonperturbative matrix elemen…
Partonic intrinsic transverse momentum can be essential for the explanation of large single spin asymmetries in hadronic reactions in the framework of perturbative QCD. The status of an ongoing program investigating in a consistent way the role of intrinsic transverse momentum both in unpolarized and polarized processes is discussed. We compute inclusive cross sections for hadron and photon production in hadronic collisions and for Drell-Yan processes; the results are compared with available experimental data in several different kinematical situations.
We discuss various ideas on the nonperturbative vacuum structure in QCD. The stochastic vacuum model of Dosch and Simonov is presented in some detail. We show how this model produces confinement. The model incorporates the idea of the QCD vacuum acting like a dual superconductor due to an effective chromomagnetic monopole condensate. We turn then to high energy, small momentum transfer hadron-hadron scattering. A field-theoretic formalism to treat these reactions is developed, where the basic quantities governing the scattering amplitudes are correlation functions of light-like Wegner-Wilson l…
A major experimental program is presently underway worldwide to determine the fundamental non-perturbative functions, the Sivers, Boer-Mulders and transversity distributions, which are vital for an understanding of the internal structure of the nucleon. However, at present, many simplifying assumptions are used in extracting these functions from the data. We demonstrate that if the binning of the data in Q^2 is small enough so that Q^2-evolution can be neglected inside a bin, then one can obtain stringent tests of these assumptions. Failure to satisfy these tests implies that the presently ext…
