The $γ$-ray emission observed in several classes of Galactic and extragalactic astrophysical sources appears to be linked to accreting black holes and rotational powered neutron stars. These systems are prodigious cosmic accelerators, and are also potential sources of the UHE cosmic rays detected by several experiments and VHE neutrinos. We review a recent progress in our understanding of these objects, and demonstrate how recent and future observations can be employed to probe the conditions in the sources.
Ultra-high energy photons (UHE, E > 10^19 eV) are inevitably produced during the propagation of 10^20 eV protons in extragalactic space. Their short interaction lengths (<20 Mpc) at these energies, combined with the impressive sensitivity of the Pierre Auger Observatory detector to these particles, makes them an ideal probe of nearby ultra-high-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) sources. We here discuss the particular case of photons from a single nearby (within 30 Mpc) source in light of the possibility that such an object might be responsible for several of the UHECR events published by the Auger col…
We study the prompt phase of low-luminosity Gamma-Ray Bursts (ll-GRBs) as potential source of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays and Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs). Within the internal shock model we choose parameters for the relativistic outflow such that our representative events have observed properties similar to GRBs 980425, 100316D and 120714B and self-consistently calculate the full spectral and temporal properties in a leptonic synchrotron self-Compton scenario. To investigate the conditions under which inverse Compton radiation may lead to a peak in the GeV--TeV range, we vary …
Cen A has been recently detected in the high-energy (HE) and very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray domain by Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. We review the observed characteristics and suggest a scenario where the VHE emission originates from the vicinity of the black hole. Motivated by the possible association of some ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic ray (CR) events with Cen A, we further analyze the acceleration efficiency for a number of a mechanisms (including shock and stochastic acceleration), showing that most of them (apart perhaps from shear) have serious difficulties in accelerating protons beyond a …
Interactions of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays in the surroundings of their accelerators can naturally explain the observed spectrum and composition of UHECRs, including the abundance of protons below the ankle. We show that astrophysical properties of the UHECR source environment such as the temperature, size, and magnetic field can be constrained by UHECR and neutrino data. Applying this to candidate sources with a simple structure shows that starburst galaxies are consistent with these constraints, but galaxy clusters may be in tension with them. For multi-component systems like AGNs and GRBs…
The association of at least a dozen ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) events with energy $\gtrsim 55$ EeV detected by the Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) from the direction of Centaurus-A, the nearest radio galaxy, supports the scenario of UHECR acceleration in the jets of radio galaxies. In this work, we model radio to very high energy (VHE,$\gtrsim 100$ \rm GeV) $γ$-ray emission from Cen A, including GeV hardness detected by Fermi-LAT and TeV emission detected by HESS. We consider two scenarios: (i) Two zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) and external-Compton (EC) models, (ii) Two zone SSC,…
Celestial sources emitting at high-energy (HE, E > 100 MeV) and at very high-energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-rays are of the order of a few thousands and a few hundreds, respectively. On the other hand, the number of sources emitting at ultra high-energy (UHE, E > several tens of TeV) gamma-rays are just a few dozens, and are currently being investigated by means of both ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) and particle shower arrays. These rare VHE and UHE sources represent a new frontier in astrophysics. An array composed of nine ASTRI Cherenkov telescopes is under c…
Interactions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) accelerated in specific astrophysical environments have been shown to shape the energy production rate of nuclei differently from that of the secondary neutrons escaping from the confinement zone. Here, we aim at testing a generic scenario of in-source interactions through a phenomenological modeling of the flux and composition of UHECRs. We fit a model in which nucleons and nuclei follow different particle energy distributions to the all-particle energy spectrum, proton spectrum below the ankle energy and distributions of maximum shower d…
MAGIC collaboration has recently analyzed data from a long-term multiwavelength campaign of the $γ$-ray blazar TXS 0506+056. In December 2018, it was flaring in the very-high-energy (VHE; $E>100$ GeV) $γ$-ray band, but no simultaneous neutrino event was detected. We model the observed spectral energy distribution (SED), using a one-zone leptohadronic emission. We estimate the neutrino flux through the restriction from observed X-ray flux on the secondary radiation due to hadronic cascade, initiated by protons with energy $E_p \lesssim 0.1$ EeV. We assume ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs; $…
TeV gamma-rays have been observed from blazars as well as from radio galaxies like M87 and Cen A. In leptonic models, gamma-rays above the pair production threshold can escape from the ultra-relativistic jet, since large Lorentz factors reduce the background photon densities compared to those required for isotropic emission. Here we discuss an alternative scenario, where VHE photons are generated as secondaries from UHECR interaction in the AGN core. We show that TeV gamma-rays can escape from the core despite large IR and UV backgrounds. For the special case of Cen A, we study if the various …
Relativistic winds of fast-spinning pulsars have been proposed as a potential site for cosmic-ray acceleration from very high energies (VHE) to ultrahigh energies (UHE). We re-examine conditions for high-energy neutrino production, considering the interaction of accelerated particles with baryons of the expanding supernova ejecta and the radiation fields in the wind nebula. We make use of the current IceCube sensitivity in diffusive high-energy neutrino background, in order to constrain the parameter space of the most extreme neutron stars as sources of VHE and UHE cosmic rays. We demonstrate …
We explain the observed multiwavelength photon spectrum of a number of BL Lac objects detected at very high energy (VHE, $E \gtrsim 30$ GeV), using a lepto-hadronic emission model. The one-zone leptonic emission is employed to fit the synchrotron peak. Subsequently, the SSC spectrum is calculated, such that it extends up to the highest energy possible for the jet parameters considered. The data points beyond this energy, and also in the entire VHE range are well explained using a hadronic emission model. The ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs, $E\gtrsim 0.1$ EeV) escaping from the source int…
The dip model assumes that the ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) above 10$^{18}$ eV consist exclusively of protons and is consistent with the spectrum and composition measure by HiRes. Here we present the range of cosmogenic neutrino fluxes in the dip-model which are compatible with a recent determination of the extragalactic very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray diffuse background derived from 2.5 years of Fermi/LAT data. We show that the largest fluxes predicted in the dip model would be detectable by IceCube in about 10 years of observation and are within the reach of a few years of observa…
The cosmic-ray (CR) accelerator at the galactic centre (GC) is not yet established by current observations. Here we investigate the radiative-inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) of Sagittarius A* (SgrA*) as a CR accelerator assuming acceleration by turbulent magnetic reconnection, and derive possible emission fluxes of CRs interacting within the RIAF (the central $\sim10^{13}$cm). The target environment of the RIAF is modelled with numerical, general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics (GRMHD) together with leptonic radiative transfer simulations. The acceleration of the CRs is not computed here.…

One of the most tantalizing questions in astronomy and astrophysics, namely the origin and the evolution of the cosmic accelerators that produce the highest energy cosmic rays (UHECR), may be best addressed through the observation of ultra high energy (UHE) cosmogenic neutrinos. Neutrinos travel from their source undeflected by magnetic fields and unimpeded by interactions with the cosmic microwave background. At high energies, neutrinos could be detected in dense, radio frequency (RF) transparent media via the Askaryan effect. The abundant cold ice covering the geographic South Pole, with its…
The photomeson production in ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) accelerators such as gamma-ray bursts and active galaxies may lead to ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-ray emission. We show that generation of UHE pairs in magnetized structured regions embedding the sources is inevitable, and accompanied >0.1 TeV synchrotron emission provides an important probe of UHECR acceleration. It would especially be relevant for powerful transient sources, and synchrotron pair echoes may be detected by future CTA via coordinated search for transients of duration ~0.1-1 yr for the structured regions with ~M…
We explore inferences on ultrahigh energy cosmic ray (UHECR) source environments -- constrained by the spectrum and composition of UHECRs and non-observation of extremely high energy neutrinos -- and their implications for the observed high energy astrophysical neutrino spectrum. We find acceleration mechanisms producing power-law CR spectra~$\propto E^{-2}$ are compatible with UHECR data, if CRs at high rigidities are in the quasi-ballistic diffusion regime as they escape their source environment. Both gas-dominated and photon-dominated source environments are able to account for UHECR observ…
We explore two generic hypotheses for tracing the sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) in the Universe: star formation rate density or stellar mass density. For each scenario, we infer a set of constraints for the emission mechanisms in the accelerators, for their energetics and for the abundances of elements at escape from their environments. From these constraints, we generate sky maps above 40~EeV expected from a catalog that comprises 410,761 galaxies out to 350 Mpc and provides a near-infrared flux-limited sample to map both stellar mass and star formation rate over the full …
The detection of ultrahigh-energy (UHE) neutrino sources would contribute significantly to solving the decades-old mystery of the origin of the highest-energy cosmic rays. We investigate the ability of a future UHE neutrino detector to identify the brightest neutrino point sources, by exploring the parameter space of the total number of observed events and the angular resolution of the detector. The favored parameter region can be translated to requirements for the effective area, sky coverage and angular resolution of future detectors, for a given source number density and evolution history. …
Recent observations of isotropic diffuse backgrounds by Fermi and IceCube allow us to get more insight into distant very-high-energy (VHE) and ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-ray/neutrino emitters, including cosmic-ray accelerators/sources. First, we investigate the contribution of intergalactic cascades induced by gamma-rays and/or cosmic rays (CRs) to the diffuse gamma-ray background (DGB) in view of the latest Fermi data. We identify a possible VHE Excess from the fact that the Fermi data are well above expectations for an attenuated power law, and show that cascades induced by VHE gamma rays…
Ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) above an energy threshold of tens of EeV might undergo only small deflections due to interstellar magnetic fields. Their arrival directions would then point to regions of possible hadronic acceleration processes, which are likely to be also sources of high energy neutrinos. To search for such cosmic accelerators, we present here the first high statistics analysis of directional correlations between neutrino candidates from the IceCube Observatory and UHECR events. Data taken with IceCube in a configuration of 22 strings provided the basis for using publish…
In this paper, we study the diffusive shock acceleration of cosmic-ray protons and nuclei, taking into account all the relevant interaction processes with photon backgrounds. We investigate how the competition between protons and nuclei is modified by the acceleration parameters such as the acceleration rate, its rigidity dependence, the photon density and the confinement capability of the sources. We find that in the case of interaction-limited acceleration processes protons are likely to be accelerated to higher energies than nuclei, whereas for confinement-limited acceleration nuclei are ac…

We review the importance of Centaurus A in high energy astrophysics as a nearby object with many of the properties expected of a major source of very high energy cosmic rays and gamma-rays. We examine observational techniques and the results so far obtained in the energy range from 200 GeV to above 100 EeV and attempt to fit those data with expectations of Centaurus A as an astrophysical source from VHE to UHE energies.
The origin of the ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) with energies above E > 1017eV, is still unknown. The discovery of their sources will reveal the engines of the most energetic astrophysical accelerators in the universe. This is a written version of a series of lectures devoted to UHECR at the 2013 CERN-Latin-American School of High-Energy Physics. We present an introduction to acceleration mechanisms of charged particles to the highest energies in astrophysical objects, their propagation from the sources to Earth, and the experimental techniques for their detection. We also discuss some…
The origin of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) is still unknown. However, great progress has been achieved in past years due to the good quality and large statistics in experimental data collected by the current observatories. The data of the Pierre Auger Observatory show that the composition of the UHECRs becomes progressively lighter starting from $10^{17}$ eV up to $\sim 10^{18.3}$ eV and then, beyond that energy, it becomes increasingly heavier. These analyses are subject to important systematic uncertainties due to the use of hadronic interaction models that extrapolate lower energy …
Supermassive black holes are believed to be the central power house of active galactic nuclei. Applying the pulsar outer-magnetospheric particle accelerator theory to black-hole magnetospheres, we demonstrate that an electric field is exerted along the magnetic field lines near the event horizon of a rotating black hole. In this particle accelerator (or a gap), electrons and positrons are created by photon-photon collisions and accelerated in the opposite directions by this electric field, efficiently emitting gamma-rays via curvature and inverse-Compton processes. It is shown that a gap arise…
The recent measurement by LHAASO of gamma-ray emission extending up to 100s of TeV from multiple Galactic sources represents a major observational step forward in the search for the origin of the Galactic cosmic rays. The burning question is if this ultra-high-energy emission is associated to acceleration of protons and/or nuclei to PeV energies, or can be associated to PeV-electron accelerators. A strong Klein-Nishina suppression of inverse Compton emission at these energies is unavoidable, nevertheless we show here that inverse Compton emission can provide a natural explanation of the measur…
Located in a dense complex environment, W51C provides an excellent scenario to probe accelerated protons in SNRs and their interaction with surrounding target material. Here we report the observation of extended Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the W51C supernova remnant (SNR) with MAGIC. Detections of extended gamma-ray emission in the same region have already been reported by the Fermi and H.E.S.S. collaborations. Fermi/LAT measured the source spectrum in the energy range between 0.2 and 50 GeV, which was found to be well fit by a hadronic neutral-pion decay model. The VHE obse…

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) and their relativistic jets belong to the most promising class of ultra-high-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) accelerators. This compact review summarises basic experimental findings by recent instruments, and discusses possible interpretations and astrophysical constraints on source energetics. Particular attention is given to potential sites and mechanisms of UHECR acceleration in AGNs, including gap-type particle acceleration close to the black hole, as well as first-order Fermi acceleration at trans-relativistic shocks and stochastic shear particle acceleration in la…
The detection of an astrophysical flux of high-energy neutrinos by IceCube is a major step forward in the search for the origin of cosmic rays, as this emission is expected to originate in hadronic interactions taking place in or near cosmic-ray accelerators. No neutrino point sources, or a significant correlation with known astrophysical objects, have been identified in the IceCube data so far that could reveal the location of the neutrino emission sites. The hadronic interactions responsible for the neutrino emission should also lead to the production of high-energy gamma rays from neutral p…
We study possible correlations between ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs), observed by Auger, AGASA and Yakutsk, and nearby active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and $Fermi$ sources. We consider the deflection effects by a Galactic magnetic field (GMF) model constrained by the most updated measurements. We found that the average deflection angles of UHECRs by the Galactic magnetic fields are less than $4^\circ$. A correlation between the Auger cosmic-ray events and nearby AGNs with a significance level of $\sim 4σ$ was found for the Auger UHECR data sets with or without deflection correction. No co…
We investigated the possibility of acceleration of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) in nearby active galactic nuclei (AGNs) using archival multi-wavelength observational data, and then we constrained their physical conditions, i.e., the luminosity of the synchrotron radiation and the size of the acceleration site. First, we investigated the spatial correlation between the arrival directions of UHECRs and the positions of nearby AGNs in the Fermi third gamma-ray source catalog. We selected 27 AGNs as candidates of accelerators of UHECRs. Then, we evaluated the physical conditions in the a…
Ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) provide a natural source of particles accelerated to energies beyond those that can be attained in the laboratory. UHECRs have been observed with energies exceeding $10^{20}$ eV, which is equivalent to 433 TeV in the center-of-momentum frame. Using this natural source of particles physicists can extend the measurement of the $pp$ cross section an order of magnitude above what is achievable in the lab, possibly identifying hints of new physics. The proton-air cross section and other properties of UHECR QCD physics are also important in their own right to t…
A deep X-ray observation of the unidentified very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray source HESS J1702-420, for the first time, was carried out by Suzaku. No bright sources were detected in the XIS field of view (FOV) except for two faint point-like sources. The two sources, however, are considered not to be related to HESS J1702-420, because their fluxes in the 2-10 keV band (~ 10^-14 erg s^-1 cm^-2) are ~ 3 orders of magnitude smaller than the VHE gamma-ray flux in the 1-10 TeV band (F_{TeV} = 3.1 x 10^-11 erg s^-1 cm^-2). We compared the energy spectrum of diffuse emission, extracted from the enti…
The flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) 4C +21.35 (PKS 1222+216) displays prominent nuclear infrared emission from ~1200 K dust. A 70 -- 400 GeV flare with ~10 min variations during half an hour of observations was found by the MAGIC telescopes, and GeV variability was observed on sub-day timescales with the Large Area Telescope on Fermi. We examine 4C +21.35, assuming that it is a source of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). UHECR proton acceleration in the inner jet powers a neutral beam of neutrinos, neutrons and gamma rays from photopion production. The radiative efficiency and producti…
A new mechanism for the acceleration of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) is presented here. It is based on the tunnel-ionization of neutral atoms approaching electrically charged stellar black holes and on the repulsion of the resulting positively charged atomic part by huge, long range electric fields. Energies above $10^{18}$ eV for these particles are calculated in a simple way by means of this one-by-one, all-electrical model. When this acceleration mechanism is combined with the supernova (SN) explosion in the galactic halo of the massive runaway stars expelled from the galactic dis…
The origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) has been widely regarded as one of the major questions in the frontiers of particle astrophysics. Gamma ray bursts (GRB), the most violent explosions in the universe second only to the Big Bang, have been a popular candidate site for UHECR productions. The recent IceCube report on the non-observation of GRB induced neutrinos therefore attracts wide attention. This dilemma requires a resolution: either the assumption of GRB as UHECR accelerator is to be abandoned or the expected GRB induced neutrino yield was wrong. It has been pointed out tha…
We present a study of the expectations for very-high-energy (VHE) to ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-ray and neutrino emission from interacting cosmic rays in our Galaxy as well as a comparison to the latest results for the Galactic UHE diffuse emission. We demonstrate the importance of properly accounting for both the mixed cosmic-ray composition and the gamma-ray absorption. We adopt the wounded-nucleon model of nucleus interactions and provide parameterisations of the resulting gamma-ray and neutrino production. Nucleon shielding due to clustering inside nuclei is shown to have a measurable e…
VERITAS, an array of atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes sensitive to gamma rays in the very-high-energy range (VHE, E > 100 GeV), carries out an extensive multimessenger program focused on the search for electromagnetic counterparts to high-energy neutrinos and gravitational waves. As both neutrinos and gamma rays are expected to be produced in hadronic interactions near cosmic ray accelerators, the detection of a gamma-ray source in temporal and spatial coincidence with the arrival of astrophysical neutrinos could reveal cosmic ray sources and provide insights into their properties. The detecti…
