The purpose of the present paper is to show few examples of nonlinear PDEs (mostly with strong geometric features) for which there is a hidden convex structure. This is not only a matter of curiosity. Once the convex structure is unrevealed, robust existence and uniqueness results can be unexpectedly obtained for very general data. Of course, as usual, regularity issues are left over as a hard post-process, but, at least, existence and uniqueness results are obtained in a large framework. The paper will address: THE MONGE-AMPERE EQUATION, THE EULER EQUATION, MULTIDIMENSIONAL HYPERBOLIC SCALAR CONSERVATION LAWS AND THE BORN-INFELD SYSTEM.
We obtain approximate convexity principles for solutions to some classes of nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations in convex domains involving approximately concave nonlinearities. Furthermore, we provide some applications to some meaningful special cases.
We develop a gradient-flow theory for time-dependent functionals defined in abstract metric spaces. Global well-posedness and asymptotic behavior of solutions are provided. Conditions on functionals and metric spaces allow to consider the Wasserstein space $\mathscr{P}_{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ and apply the results for a large class of PDEs with time- dependent coefficients like confinement and interaction potentials and diffusion. Our results can be seen as an extension of those in Ambrosio-Gigli-Savaré (2005)[2] to the case of time-dependent functionals. For that matter, we need to consider some…
We study compressible and incompressible nonlinear elasticity variational problems in a general context. Our main result gives a sufficient condition for an equilibrium to be a global energy minimizer, in terms of convexity properties of the pressure in the deformed configuration. We also provide a convex relaxation of the problem together with its dual formulation, based on measure-valued mappings, which coincides with the original problem under our condition.
We revisit the problem of approximating minimizers of certain convex functionals subject to a convexity constraint by solutions of fourth order equations of Abreu type. This approximation problem was studied in previous works of Carlier-Radice (Approximation of variational problems with a convexity constraint by PDEs of Abreu type. Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations. 58 (2019), no. 5, Art. 170) and the author (Singular Abreu equations and minimizers of convex functionals with a convexity constraint, arXiv:1811.02355v3, Comm. Pure Appl. Math., to appear), under the uniform convexity of b…
In this paper we consider two classes of resonant Hamiltonian PDEs on the circle with non-convex (respect to actions) first order resonant Hamiltonian. We show that, for appropriate choices of the nonlinearities we can find time-independent linear potentials that enable the construction of solutions that undergo a prescribed growth in the Sobolev norms. The solutions that we provide follow closely the orbits of a nonlinear resonant model, which is a good approximation of the full equation. The non-convexity of the resonant Hamiltonian allows the existence of fast diffusion channels along which…
In this paper we establish a rigorous gradient flow structure for one-dimensional Kimura equations with respect to some Wasserstein-Shahshahani optimal transport geometry. This is achieved by first conditioning the underlying stochastic process to non-fixation in order to get rid of singularities on the boundaries, and then studying the conditioned $Q$-process from a more traditional and variational point of view. In doing so we complete the work initiated in [Chalub et Al., Gradient flow formulations of discrete and continuous evolutionary models: a unifying perspective. Acta App Math., 171(1…
We develop an optimal regularity theory for $L^p$-viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations in nondivergence form whose gradient growth is described through a Hamiltonian function with measurable and possibly unbounded coefficients. Our approach treats both superlinear and sublinear gradient regimes in a unified way. We show $C^{0,α}$, $C^{0,\textrm{Log-Lip}}$, $C^{1,α}$, $ C^{1,\textrm{Log-Lip}}$ and $C^{2,α}$ regularity estimates, by displaying the growth allowed to the Hamiltonian in order to deal with an unbounded nonlinear gradient coefficient, whose integrabilit…
We discuss various representations of planar $p$-harmonic systems of equations and their solutions. For coordinate functions of $p$-harmonic maps we analyze signs of their Hessians, the Gauss curvature of $p$-harmonic surfaces, the length of level curves as well as we discuss curves of steepest descent. The isoperimetric inequality for the level curves of coordinate functions of planar $p$-harmonic maps is proven. Our main techniques involve relations between quasiregular maps and planar PDEs. We generalize some results due to P. Lindqvist, G. Alessandrini, G. Talenti and P. Laurence.
Interpolation inequalities play an essential role in Analysis with fundamental consequences in Mathematical Physics, Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations (PDEs), Markov Processes, etc., and have a wide range of applications in various other areas of Science. Research interests have evolved over the years: while mathematicians were originally focussed on abstract properties (for instance appropriate notions of functional spaces for the existence of weak solutions in PDEs), more qualitative questions (for instance, bifurcation diagrams, multiplicity of the solutions in PDEs and their qualita…
We describe some natural relations connecting contact geometry, classical Monge-Ampere equations and theory of singularities of solutions to nonlinear PDEs. They reveal the hidden meaning of Monge-Ampere equations and sheds new light on some aspects of contact geometry.
We study the Lie point symmetries of a general class of partial differential equations (PDE) of second order. An equation from this class naturally defines a second-order symmetric tensor (metric). In the case the PDE is linear on the first derivatives we show that the Lie point symmetries are given by the conformal algebra of the metric modulo a constraint involving the linear part of the PDE. Important elements in this class are the Klein--Gordon equation and the Laplace equation. We apply the general results and determine the Lie point symmetries of these equations in various general classe…
We establish uniqueness results for quasilinear elliptic problems through the criterion recently provided in \cite{DFMST}. We apply it to generalized $p$-Laplacian subhomogeneous problems that may admit multiple nontrivial nonnegative solutions. Based on a generalized hidden convexity result, we show that uniqueness holds among strongly positive solutions and nonnegative global minimizers. Problems involving nonhomogeneous operators as the so-called $(p,r)$-Laplacian are also treated.
We present the Maple package TDDS (Thomas Decomposition of Differential Systems). Given a polynomially nonlinear differential system, which in addition to equations may contain inequations, this package computes a decomposition of it into a finite set of differentially triangular and algebraically simple subsystems whose subsets of equations are involutive. Usually the decomposed system is substantially easier to investigate and solve both analytically and numerically. The distinctive property of a Thomas decomposition is disjointness of the solution sets of the output subsystems. Thereby, a s…
We study the reduction of the heat equation in Riemannian spaces which admit a gradient Killing vector, a gradient homothetic vector and in Petrov Type D,N,II and Type III space-times. In each reduction we identify the source of the Type II hidden symmetries. More specifically we find that a) If we reduce the heat equation by the symmetries generated by the gradient KV the reduced equation is a linear heat equation in the nondecomposable space. b) If we reduce the heat equation via the symmetries generated by the gradient HV the reduced equation is a Laplace equation for an appropriate metric.…
