Ultra-cool Dwarfs from Large Area Surveys

The $\textit{Gaia}$ Ultra-Cool Dwarf Sample $-$ III: Seven new multiple systems containing at least one $\textit{Gaia}$ DR2 ultra-cool dwarf

We present ten new ultra-cool dwarfs in seven wide binary systems discovered using $\textit{Gaia}$ DR2 data, identified as part of our $\textit{Gaia}$ Ultra-Cool Dwarf Sample project. The seven systems presented here include an L1 companion to the G5 IV star HD 164507, an L1: companion to the V478 Lyr AB system, an L2 companion to the metal-poor K5 V star CD-28 8692, an M9 V companion to the young variable K0 V star LT UMa, and three low-mass binaries consisting of late Ms and early Ls. In the era of modern digital sky surveys, uncertainties in the flux of stellar standards are commonly the dominant systematic error in photometric calibration and can often affect the results of higher-level experiments. We demonstrate the feasibility of determining parallaxes for nearby objects with theWide Field Camera on the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) using the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey as a first epoch. Ultra-cool white dwarfs are among the oldest stellar remnants in the Universe. Their efficient gravitational settling and low effective temperatures are responsible for the smooth spectra they exhibit. Discovery of a Candidate for the Coolest Known Brown Dwarf

We have used multi-epoch images from the Infrared Array Camera on board the Spitzer Space Telescope to search for substellar companions to stars in the solar neighborhood based on common proper motions. Through this work, we have discovered a faint companion to the white dwarf WD 0806-661. The comoving source has a projected separation of 130", corresponding to 2500 AU at the distance of the primary (19.2 pc). If it is physically associated, then its absolute magnitude at 4.5um is ~1 mag fainter than the faintest known T dwarfs, making it a strong candidate for the coolest known brown dwarf. T…

The First Ultra-Cool Brown Dwarf Discovered by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer

We report the discovery of the first new ultra-cool brown dwarf found with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). The object's preliminary designation is WISEPC J045853.90+643451.9. Follow-up spectroscopy with the LUCIFER instrument on the Large Binocular Telescope indicates that it is a very late-type T dwarf with a spectral type approximately equal to T9. Fits to an IRTF/SpeX 0.8-2.5 micron spectrum to the model atmospheres of Marley and Saumon indicate an effective temperature of approximately 600 K as well as the presence of vertical mixing in its atmosphere.
