Quantum measurements are considered for optimal control of quantum dynamics with instantaneous and continuous observations utilized to manipulate population transfer. With an optimal set of measurements, the highest yield in a two-level system can be obtained. The analytical solution is given for the problem of population transfer by measurement-assisted coherent control in a three-level system with a dynamical symmetry. The anti-Zeno effect is recovered in the controlled processes. The demonstrations in the paper show that suitable observations can be powerful tools in the manipulation of quantum dynamics.
In the history of quantum mechanics, various types of uncertainty relationships have been introduced to accommodate different operational meanings of Heisenberg uncertainty principle. We derive an optimized entropic uncertainty relation (EUR) that quantifies an amount of quantum uncertainty in the scenario of successive measurements. The EUR characterizes the limitation in the measurability of two different quantities of a quantum state when they are measured through successive measurements. We find that the bound quantifies the information between the two measurements and imposes a condition …
Von Neumann projections are the main operations by which information can be extracted from the quantum to the classical realm. They are however static processes that do not adapt to the states they measure. Advances in the field of adaptive measurement have shown that this limitation can be overcome by "wrapping" the von Neumann projectors in a higher-dimensional circuit which exploits the interplay between measurement outcomes and measurement settings. Unfortunately, the design of adaptive measurement has often been ad hoc and setup-specific. We shall here develop a unified framework for desi…
Recently, an entropic uncertainty relation for multiple measurements has been proposed by Liu et al. in [Phys. Rev. A 91, 042133 (2015)]. However, the lower bound of the relation is not always tight with respect to different measurements. Herein, we improve the lower bound of the entropic uncertainty relation for multiple measurements, termed as simply constructed bound (SCB). We verify that the SCB is tighter than Liu et al.'s result for arbitrary mutually unbiased basis measurements, which might play a fundamental and crucial role in practical quantum information processing. Moreover, we opt…
A two-step detection strategy is suggested for the precise measurement of the optical phase-shift. In the first step an unsharp, however, unbiased joint measurement of the phase and photon number is performed by heterodyning the signal field. Information coming from this step is then used for suitable squeezing of the probe mode to obtain a sharp phase distribution. Application to squeezed states leads to a phase sensitivity scaling as $Δϕ\simeq N^{-1}$ relative to the total number of photons impinged into the apparatus. Numerical simulations of the whole detection strategy are also also prese…
Currently, quantum reservoir computing is one of the most promising and experimentally accessible techniques for hybrid, quantum-classical machine learning. However, its applications are limited due to practical restrictions on the size of quantum systems and the influence of noise. Here we propose a novel approach to connect two quantum reservoirs in a network to overcome these issues and enhance their computing performance. To transfer information between quantum reservoirs, we perform optimized two-qubit non-selective measurements. We suggest a general heuristic optimization strategy based …
We describe an optimized, self-correcting procedure for the Bayesian inference of pure quantum states. By analyzing the history of measurement outcomes at each step, the procedure returns the most likely pure state, as well as the optimal basis for the measurement that is to follow. The latter is chosen to maximize, on average, the fidelity of the most likely state after the measurement. We also consider a practical variant of this protocol, where the available measurement bases are restricted to certain limited sets of bases. We demonstrate the success of our method by considering in detail t…
We analyze a direct parity measurement of the state of three superconducting qubits in circuit quantum electrodynamics. The parity is inferred from a homodyne measurement of the reflected/transmitted microwave radiation and the measurement is direct in the sense that the parity is measured without the need for any quantum circuit operations or for ancilla qubits. Qubits are coupled to two resonant cavity modes, allowing the steady state of the emitted radiation to satisfy the necessary conditions to act as a pointer state for the parity. However, the transient dynamics violates these condition…
We study an optimized measurement which discriminates N mixed quantum states occurring with given prior robabilities. The measurement yields the maximum achievable confidence for each of the N conclusive outcomes, thereby keeping the overall probability of inconclusive outcomes as small as possible. It corresponds to optimum unambiguous discrimination when for each outcome the confidence is equal to unity. Necessary and sufficient optimality conditions are derived and general properties of the optimum measurement are obtained. The results are applied to the optimized maximum-confidence discrim…
We propose a method of optimally controlling the tradeoff of speed and fidelity of state transfer through a noisy quantum channel (spin-chain). This process is treated as qubit state-transfer through a fermionic bath. We show that dynamical modulation of the boundary-qubits levels can ensure state transfer with the best tradeoff of speed and fidelity. This is achievable by dynamically optimizing the transmission spectrum of the channel. The resulting optimal control is robust against both static and fluctuating noise in the channel's spin-spin couplings. It may also facilitate transfer in the …
We suggest an interferometric scheme assisted by squeezing and linear feedback to realize the whole class of field-quadrature quantum nondemolition measurements, from Von Neumann projective measurement to fully non-destructive non-informative one. In our setup, the signal under investigation is mixed with a squeezed probe in an interferometer and, at the output, one of the two modes is revealed through homodyne detection. The second beam is then amplitude-modulated according to the outcome of the measurement, and finally squeezed according to the transmittivity of the interferometer. Using str…
Constructing high-fidelity control fields that are robust to control, system, and/or surrounding environment uncertainties is a crucial objective for quantum information processing. Using the two-state Landau-Zener model for illustrative simulations of a controlled qubit, we generate optimal controls for π/2- and π-pulses, and investigate their inherent robustness to uncertainty in the magnitude of the drift Hamiltonian. Next, we construct a quantum-control protocol to improve system-drift robustness by combining environment-decoupling pulse criteria and optimal control theory for unitary oper…
Numerically we simulate the effect of optimized coherent control pulses with a finite duration on a qubit in a bath of spins. The pulses of finite duration are compared with ideal instantaneous pulses. In particular, we show that properly designed short pulses can approximate ideal instantaneous pulses up to a certain order in the shortness of the pulse. We provide examples of such pulses, quantify the discrepancy from the ideal case and compare their effect for various ranges of the coupling constants.
We present an efficient method to control the spatial modes of entangled photons produced through SPDC process. Bi-photon beam propagation is controlled by a deformable mirror, that shapes a 404nm CW diode laser pump interacting with a nonlinear BBO type-I crystal. Thanks to adaptive optical system, the propagation of 808nm SPDC light produced is optimized over a distance of 2m. The whole system optimization is carried out by a feedback between deformable mirror action and entangled photon coincidence counts. We also demonstrated the improvement of the two-photon coupling into single mode fibe…
Minimizing phase and other errors in experimental quantum gates allows higher fidelity quantum processing. To quantify and correct for phase errors in particular, we have developed a new experimental metrology --- amplified phase error (APE) pulses --- that amplifies and helps identify phase errors in general multi-level qubit architectures. In order to correct for both phase and amplitude errors specific to virtual transitions and leakage outside of the qubit manifold, we implement "half derivative" an experimental simplification of derivative reduction by adiabatic gate (DRAG) control theory…
We propose a systematic procedure to optimize quantum state tomography protocols for continuous variable systems based on excitation counting preceded by a displacement operation. Compared with conventional tomography based on Husimi or Wigner function measurement, the excitation counting approach can significantly reduce the number of measurement settings. We investigate both informational completeness and robustness, and provide a bound of reconstruction error involving the condition number of the sensing map. We also identify the measurement settings that optimize this error bound, and demo…
Error correcting codes use multi-qubit measurements to realize fault-tolerant quantum logic steps. In fact, the resources needed to scale-up fault-tolerant quantum computing hardware are largely set by this task. Tailoring next-generation processors for joint measurements, therefore, could result in improvements to speed, accuracy, or cost -- accelerating the development large-scale quantum computers. Here, we motivate such explorations by analyzing an unconventional surface code based on multi-body interactions between superconducting transmon qubits. Our central consideration, Hardware Optim…
We derive a phase-entanglement criterion for two bosonic modes which is immune to number fluc- tuations, using the generalized Moore-Penrose inverse to normalize the phase-quadrature operator. We also obtain a phase-squeezing criterion that is immune to number fluctuations using similar techniques. These are utilized to obtain an operational definition of relative phase-measurement sensitivity, via analysis of phase measurement in interferometry. We show that these measures are proportional to enhanced phase-measurement sensitivity. The phase-entanglement criterion is a hallmark for a new type…
High-dimensional quantum entanglement is drawing attention because it enables us to perform quantum information tasks that are robust against noises. To test the nonlocality of entangled qudits, the Collins-Gisin-Linden-Massar-Popescu (CGLMP) inequality has been proposed and demonstrated using qudits based on orbital angular momentum, time-energy uncertainty, and frequency bins. Here, we report the generation and observation of time-bin entangled ququarts. We implemented a measurement for the CGLMP inequality test using cascaded delay Mach-Zehnder interferometers fabricated by using planar lig…
We propose an eavesdropping experiment with linear optical 1-3 phase-covariant quantum cloner. In this paper, we have designed an optical circuit of the cloner and shown how the eavesdropper (Eve) utilizes her clones. We have also optimized the measurement scheme for Eve by numerical calculation. The optimized measurement is easy to implement with liner optics.
Reliable long-time storage of arbitrary quantum states is a key element for quantum information processing. In order to dynamically decouple a spin or quantum bit from a dephasing environment, we introduce an optimized sequence of $N$ control pulses of finite durations $τ\pp$ and finite amplitudes. The properties of this sequence of length $T$ stem from a mathematically rigorous derivation. Corrections occur only in order $T^{N+1}$ and $τ\pp^3$ without mixed terms such as $T^Nτ\pp$ or $T^Nτ\pp^2$. Based on existing experiments, a concrete setup for the verification of the properties of the adv…
We investigate phase and frequency estimation with different measurement strategies under the effect of collective phase noise. First, we consider the standard linear estimation scheme and present an experimentally realisable optimization of the initial probe states by collective rotations. We identify the optimal rotation angle for different measurement times. Second, we show that sub-shot noise sensitivity - up to the Heisenberg limit - can be reached in presence of collective phase noise by using differential interferometry, where one part of the system is used to monitor the noise. For thi…
We address the experimentally relevant problem of robust mitigation of dephasing noise acting on a qubit. We first present an extension of a method for representing $1/ω^α$ noise developed by Kuopanportti et al. to the efficient representation of arbitrary Markovian noise. We then add qubit control pulses to enable the design of numerically optimized, two-dimensional control functions with bounded amplitude, that are capable of decoupling the qubit from the dephasing effects of a broad variety of Markovian noise spectral densities during arbitrary one qubit quantum operations. We illustrate th…
Spectator qubits (SQs) are a tool to mitigate noise in hard-to-access data qubits. The SQ, designed to be much more sensitive to the noise, is measured frequently, and the accumulated results used rarely to correct the data qubits. For the hardware-relevant example of dephasing from random telegraph noise, we introduce a Bayesian method employing complex linear maps which leads to a plausibly optimal adaptive measurement and control protocol. The suppression of the decoherence rate is quadratic in the SQ sensitivity, establishing that the SQ paradigm works arbitrarily well in the right regime.
We report on transport operations with linear crystals of 40Ca+ ions by applying complex electric time-dependent potentials. For their control we use the information obtained from the ions' fluorescence. We demonstrate that by means of this feedback technique, we can transport a predefined number of ions and also split and unify ion crystals. The feedback control allows for a robust scheme, compensating for experimental errors as it does not rely on a precisely known electrical modeling of the electric potentials in the ion trap beforehand. Our method allows us to generate a self-learning volt…

Two recent developments in quantum control, concatenation and optimization of pulse intervals, are combined to yield a strategy to suppress unwanted couplings in quantum systems to high order. Longitudinal relaxation and transverse dephasing can be suppressed so that systems with a small splitting between their energy levels can be kept isolated from their environment. The required number of pulses grows exponentially with the desired order but is only the square root of the number needed if only concatenation is used. An approximate scheme even brings the number down to polynomial growth. The…
We propose an efficient strategy to find optimal control functions for state-to-state quantum control problems. Our procedure first chooses an input state trajectory, that can realize the desired transformation by adiabatic variation of the system Hamiltonian. The shortcut-to-adiabaticity (STA) formalism then provides a control Hamiltonian that realizes the reference trajectory exactly but on a finite time scale. As the final state is achieved with certainty, we define a cost functional that incorporates the resource requirements and a perturbative expression for robustness. We optimize this f…
Quantum sensors based on single solid-state spins promise a unique combination of sensitivity and spatial resolution. The key challenge in sensing is to achieve minimum estimation uncertainty within a given time and with a high dynamic range. Adaptive strategies have been proposed to achieve optimal performance but their implementation in solid-state systems has been hindered by the demanding experimental requirements. Here we realize adaptive d.c. sensing by combining single-shot readout of an electron spin in diamond with fast feedback. By adapting the spin readout basis in real time based o…
Quantum computers are traditionally operated by programmers at the granularity of a gate-based instruction set. However, the actual device-level control of a quantum computer is performed via analog pulses. We introduce a compiler that exploits direct control at this microarchitectural level to achieve significant improvements for quantum programs. Unlike quantum optimal control, our approach is bootstrapped from existing gate calibrations and the resulting pulses are simple. Our techniques are applicable to any quantum computer and realizable on current devices. We validate our techniques wit…
High-dimensional encoding schemes have emerged as a novel way to perform quantum information tasks. For high dimensionality, temporal and transverse spatial modes of photons are the two paradigmatic degrees of freedom commonly used in such experiments. Nevertheless, general devices for multi-outcome measurements are still needed to take full advantage of the high-dimensional nature of encoding schemes. We propose a general full-field mode sorting scheme consisting only of up to two optimized phase elements based on evolutionary algorithms that allows for joint sorting of azimuthal and radial m…
