The application of quadrupole-devices with high field gradients and small apertures requires precise control over higher order multipole field components. We present a new scheme for performance control and tuning, which allows the illumination of most of the quadrupole-device aperture because of the reduction of higher order field components. Consequently, the size of the aperture can be minimized to match the beam size achieving field gradients of up to 500 T/m at good imaging quality. The characterization method based on a Hall probe measurement and a Fourier analysis was confirmed using the high quality electron beam at the Mainz Microtron MAMI.
For magnetic field calculations, cylindrical permanent magnets are often approximated as ideal, azimuthally symmetric solenoids. Despite the frequent usage of this approximation, research papers demonstrating the validity and limitations of this approach are scarcely available. In this paper, the experimentally derived magnetic field of a cylindrical permanent magnet is compared with the analytically calculated magnetic field of an ideal solenoid. An experimental setup for measuring the magnetic field distribution is demonstrated and employed for gathering the data. The proposed setup allows t…
A novel frequency modulated MEMS magnetometer is presented. The new device is inspired by the magnetic force microscopy technique, it combines standard MEMS technology with magnetic elements to obtain a magnetometer with potential for low power consumption and high performance. The analytical model and the characterization of the first proof-concept device are presented.
The Penning trap has been investigated as the basis of a small nuclear fusion reactor using a superconducting solenoid magnet. To extend this investigation, we designed, constructed, and evaluated a permanent magnet Penning trap. The device consists of a solenoid formed from an annular array of neodymium bar magnets between two iron pole pieces designed to give a uniform magnetic field in the central volume of the device. Critical to achieving the uniform solenoidal field is an iron equatorial ring supported within the annular array of magnets. A nonmagnetic titanium Penning trap with hyperbol…
We present a design for producing precisely adjustable and alternating single-axis magnetic fields based on nested Halbach dipole pairs consisting of permanent magnets only. Our design allows for three dimensional optical and mechanical access to a region with strong adjustable dipolar fields, is compatible with systems operating under vacuum, and does not effectively dissipate heat under normal operational conditions. We present a theoretical analysis of the properties and capabilities of our design, and construct a proof-of-concept prototype. Using our prototype, we demonstrate fields of up …
Magnetic fields are a standard tool in the toolbox of every physicist, and are required for the characterization of materials, as well as the polarization of spins in nuclear magnetic resonance or electron paramagnetic resonance experiments. Quite often a static magnetic field of sufficiently large, but fixed magnitude is suitable for these tasks. Here we present a permanent magnet assembly that can achieve magnetic field strengths of up to 1.5T over an air gap length of 7mm. The assembly is based on a Halbach array of neodymium (NdFeB) magnets, with the inclusion of the soft magnetic material…
We describe the design, assembly, and testing of a magnet intended to deflect beams of paramagnetic nanoclusters, molecules, and atoms. It is energized by high-grade permanent neodymium magnets. This offers a convenient option in terms of cost, portability, and scalability of the construction, while providing field and gradient values (1.1 T, 330 T/m) which are fully comparable with commonly used electromagnet deflectors.
Portable low-cost MRI systems have the potential to enable point-of-care and timely MRI diagnosis, and to make this imaging modality available to routine scans and to underdeveloped areas. With simplicity, no maintenance, no power consumption, and low cost, permanent magnets or arrays are attractive to use as a source of magnetic field to realize portability and low cost for a scanners. However, when taking the Fourier imaging approach and using linear gradient fields, homogeneous fields are required, thus either a bulky magnet is needed, or the imaging volume is too small to image an organ if…
We report on a 3/8" OD x 1/4" ID x 3/8" long NdFeB assembly of 1/16" thick annulars boasting half the 1/100 far field transverse decay distance compared to an ID Helholtz-spaced pair of similar annulars; and greater than 50% of ID collimated better than 1/1000. The device is applied to a He-3,-4 laser spectroscopy experiment.
Halbach magnets are a source of homogeneous magnetic field in an enclosed volume while keeping stray fields at a minimum. Here, we present the design, construction, and characterization for a 10 cm inner diameter double Halbach ring providing a homogeneous (<100 ppm over 1 x 1 x 0.5 cm3) magnetic field of around 105 mT, which will be used for a diamond based microwave-free widefield imaging setup. The final characterization is performed with a novel fiberized diamond-based sensor on a 3D translation stage documenting the high homogeneity of the constructed Halbach array and its suitability for…
