We demonstrate that the scatter in the luminosity relations of astrophysical objects can be used to search for axion-like-particles (ALPs). This analysis is applied to observations of active galactic nuclei, where we find evidence strongly suggestive of the existence of a very light ALP.
If the dark matter is made of ultra-light axions, stable solitonic cores form at the centers of virialized halos. In some range for the mass $m$ of the axion particle, these cores are sufficiently compact and can mimic supermassive black holes (SMBH) residing at galactic nuclei. We use the solitonic core--halo mass relation, validated in numerical simulations, to constrain a new range of allowed axion mass from measurements of the SMBH mass in (pseudo)bulge and bulgeless galaxies. These limits are based on observations of galactic nuclei on scales smaller than 10 pc. Our analysis suggests that…
We show that the interaction of an axion field, or in general a pseudoscalar field, with the axial-vector current generated by an electron through a derivative-type coupling can give rise to a time-dependent mixing of opposite-parity states in atomic and molecular systems. Likewise, the analogous interaction of an axion field with the axial-vector current generated by a nucleon can give rise to time-dependent mixing of opposite-parity states in nuclear systems. This mixing can induce oscillating electric dipole moments, oscillating parity non-conservation effects and oscillating anapole moment…
The extragalactic background light (EBL) is comprised of the cumulative radiation from all galaxies and active galactic nuclei over the cosmic history. In addition to point sources, EBL also contains information from diffuse sources of radiation. The angular power spectra of the near-infrared intensities could contain additional signals and a complete understanding of the nature of the IR background is still lacking in the literature. Here we explore the constraints that can be placed on particle decays, especially candidate dark matter models involving axions that trace dark matter halos of g…
New particles coupled to the Standard Model can equilibrate in stellar cores if they are sufficiently heavy and strongly coupled. In this work, we investigate the astrophysical consequences of such a scenario for massive stars by incorporating new contributions to the equation of state into a state of the art stellar structure code. We focus on axions in the "cosmological triangle", a region of parameter space with $300{\rm\,keV} \lesssim m_a \lesssim 2$ MeV, $g_{aγγ}\sim 10^{-5}$ GeV$^{-1}$ that is not presently excluded by other considerations. We find that for axion masses $m_a \sim m_e $, …

Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) are predicted by several Beyond the Standard Model theories, in particular, string theory. In the presence of an external magnetic field perpendicular to the direction of propagation, ALPs can couple to photons. Therefore, if an X-ray source is viewed through a magnetised plasma, such as a luminous quasar in a galaxy cluster, we may expect spectral distortions that are well described by photon-ALP oscillations. We present a $571 \ \mathrm{ks}$ combined High and Low Energy Transmission Grating (HETG/LETG) Chandra observation of the powerful radio-quiet quasar H1821+6…
The tight inter-band correlation and the lag-wavelength relation among UV/optical continua of active galactic nuclei have been firmly established. They are usually understood within the widespread reprocessing scenario, however, the implied inter-band lags are generally too small. Furthermore, it is challenged by new evidences, such as the X-ray reprocessing yields too much high frequency UV/optical variations as well as it fails to reproduce the observed timescale-dependent color variations among {\it Swift} lightcurves of NGC 5548. In a different manner, we demonstrate that an upgraded inhom…
