Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been often proposed for generating nonlinear optical effects at the single photon level; in particular, as a means to effect a quantum non-demolition measurement of a single photon field. Previous treatments have usually considered homogeneously broadened samples, but realisations in any medium will have to contend with inhomogeneous broadening. Here we reappraise an earlier scheme [Munro \textit{et al.} Phys. Rev. A \textbf{71}, 033819 (2005)] with respect to inhomogeneities and show an alternative mode of operation that is preferred in an inhomogeneous environment. We further show the implications of these results on a potential implementation in diamond containing nitrogen-vacancy colour centres. Our modelling shows that single mode waveguide structures of length $200 μ\mathrm{m}$ in single-crystal diamond containing a dilute ensemble of NV$^-$ of only 200 centres are sufficient for quantum non-demolition measurements using EIT-based weak nonlinear interactions.
We propose a new method for efficient storage and recall of non-stationary light fields, e.g. single photon time-bin qubits, in optically dense atomic ensembles. Our approach to quantum memory is based on controlled, reversible, inhomogeneous broadening. We briefly discuss experimental realizations of our proposal.
We study the evolution of an inverted spin ensemble coupled to a cavity. The inversion itself presents an inherent instability of the system; however, the inhomogeneous broadening of spin-resonance frequencies presents a stabilizing mechanism, and a stability criterion is derived. The detailed behavior of mean values and variances of the spin components and of the cavity field is accounted for under both stable and unstable conditions.
Spontaneous Raman emission in atomic gases provides an attractive source of photon pairs with a controllable delay. We show how this technique can be implemented in solid state systems by appropriately shaping the inhomogeneous broadening. Our proposal is eminently feasible with current technology and provides a realistic solution to entangle remote rare-earth doped solids in a heralded way.
We present a detailed analysis of a quantum memory for photons based on controlled and reversible inhomogeneous broadening (CRIB). The explicit solution of the equations of motion is obtained in the weak excitation regime, making it possible to gain insight into the dependence of the memory efficiency on the optical depth, and on the width and shape of the atomic spectral distributions. We also study a simplified memory protocol which does not require any optical control fields.
A new scheme of photon echo based quantum memory in the optimal optical QED cavity with off-resonant Raman atomic transition is proposed. The scheme employs the atomic ensembles characterized by an optically thin resonant transition and natural inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant line composed of the arbitrary narrow homogeneous spectral components. The scheme provides robust and quite simple coherent control of the light-atoms dynamics that can be implemented by using an existing optical technique and opens a practical way for realization of the efficient long-lived multi-mode optical qu…
A long-lived qubit is usually well-isolated from all other systems and the environments, and so is not easy to couple with measurement apparatus. It is sometimes difficult to implement reliable projective measurements on such a qubit. One potential solution is spin amplification with many ancillary qubits. Here, we propose a spin amplification technique, where the ancillary qubits state change depending on the state of the target qubit. The technique works even in the presence of inhomogeneous broadening. We show that fast and accurate amplification is possible even if the coupling and frequen…
In a recent paper [Gorshkov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 123601 (2007)] and in the two preceding papers [Gorshkov et al., Phys. Rev. A 76, 033804 (2007); 76, 033805 (2007)], we used a universal physical picture to optimize and demonstrate equivalence between a wide range of techniques for storage and retrieval of photon wave packets in homogeneously broadened Lambda-type atomic media, including the adiabatic reduction of the photon group velocity, pulse-propagation control via off-resonant Raman techniques, and photon-echo-based techniques. In the present paper, we generalize this treatment to…

We analyze the creation of spin squeezed atomic ensembles by simultaneous dispersive interactions with several optical frequencies. A judicious choice of optical parameters enables optimization of an interferometric detection scheme that suppresses inhomogeneous light shifts and keeps the interferometer operating in a balanced mode that minimizes technical noise. We show that when the atoms interact with two-frequency light tuned to cycling transitions the degree of spin squeezing $ξ^2$ scales as $ξ^2\sim 1/d$ where $d$ is the resonant optical depth of the ensemble. In real alkali atoms there …
In order to better understand the underlying fundamental physical processes in nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, and to realize improvements in the use of this system for technological applications, it is imperative to gain new insight into the origins of the apparent inhomogeneous broadening. In this work we make use of a novel type of spectroscopy developed specifically for this task. The pump-probe spectroscopy closely follows Doppler-free spectroscopy used in atomic vapor. We show that the origin of inhomogeneous broadening comes from local magnetic field variations in the diamond latti…
It is shown that inhomogeneous broadening of the spectral line of active impurities may sustain simultaneously parity (P) and time (T) symmetries of a medium, in a finite range of field frequencies, what is forbidden by the causality principle in media without broadening. If a spectral width of a propagating pulse is less than the inhomogeneous broadening, the medium for such a pulse becomes quasi-PT symmetric. The effect of the broadband quasi-PT symmetry in a finite frequency domain, is illustrated on examples of unidirectional diffraction of pulses in Bragg and Laue geometries, propagating …
We examine the effect of inhomogeneous broadening on the collective response of a planar metamaterial consisting of asymmetric split ring resonators. We show that such a response leads to a transmission resonance that can persist when the broadening of individual meta-atom resonance frequencies is roughly one half the frequency characterizing the split ring asymmetry. We also find that larger degrees of inhomogeneous broadening can drastically alter the cooperative response, destroying this resonance. The reduced effect of cooperative response due to inhomogeneous broadening may find applicati…
Inhomogeneous broadening of energy levels is one of the principal limiting factors for achieving "slow" or "stationary" light in solid state media by means of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), a quantum version of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP). Stark-shift-chirped rapid-adiabatic-passage (SCRAP) has been shown to be far less sensitive to inhomogeneous broadening than STIRAP, a population transfer technique to which it is closely related. We further optimise the pulses used in SCRAP to be even less sensitive to inhomogeneous broadening in a lambda-type three-level sy…
A transducer of single photons between microwave and optical frequencies can be used to realize quantum communication over optical fiber links between distant superconducting quantum computers. A promising scalable approach to constructing such a transducer is to use ensembles of quantum emitters interacting simultaneously with electromagnetic fields at optical and microwave frequencies. However, inhomogeneous broadening in the transition frequencies of the emitters can be detrimental to this collective action. In this article, we utilise a gradient-based optimization strategy to design the te…
We present a method for performing quantum state reconstruction on qubits and qubit registers in the presence of decoherence and inhomogeneous broadening. The method assumes only rudimentary single qubit rotations as well as knowledge of decoherence and loss mechanisms. We show that full state reconstruction is possible even in the case where single qubit rotations may only be performed imperfectly. Furthermore we show that for ensemble quantum computing proposals, quantum state reconstruction is possible even if the ensemble experiences inhomogeneous broadening and if only imperfect qubit man…
We show that atoms from wide velocity interval can be concurrently involved in Doppler-free two-photon resonant far from frequency degenerate four-wave mixing with the aid of auxiliary electromagnetic field. This gives rise to substantial enhancement of the output radiation generated in optically thick medium. Numerical illustrations addressed to typical experimental conditions are given.
We study photon emission by an ensemble of two-level systems, with strong inhomogeneous broadening and coupled to a cavity mode whose frequency has linear time-dependence. The analysis shows that, regardless the distribution of energy level splittings, a sharp phase transition occurs between the weak and strong cooperative emission phases near a critical photonic frequency sweeping rate. The associated scaling exponent is determined. We suggest that this phase transition can be observed in an ensemble of negatively charged NV centers in diamond interacting with a microwave half-wavelength cavi…
In large ensembles of identical atoms or spins, the interaction with a mode of the electromagnetic radiation field concentrates in a single superradiant degree of freedom with a collectively enhanced coupling. Given a controllable inhomogeneous broadening, such ensembles may be used for multi-mode storage of quantum states of the radiation field with applications in quantum communication networks and quantum computers. In this paper we analyze how the width and shape of the inhomogeneous broadening influence the collective enhancement and the dynamics of the cavity-ensemble system with focus o…
In this work we obtain a family of quantum nondemolition variables for the case of a particle moving in an inhomogeneous gravitational field. Afterwards, we calculate the corresponding propagator, and deduce the probabilitites associated with the possible measurements outputs. The comparison, with the case in which the position is being monitored, will allow us to find the differences with respect to the case of a quantum demolition measuring process.
We demonstrate precision measurement and control of inhomogeneous broadening in a multi-ion clock consisting of three $^{176}$Lu$^+$ ions. Microwave spectroscopy between hyperfine states in the $^3D_1$ level is used to characterise differential systematic shifts between ions, most notably those associated with the electric quadrupole moment. By appropriate alignment of the magnetic field, we demonstrate suppression of these effects to the $\sim 10^{-17}$ level relative to the $^1S_0\leftrightarrow{}^3D_1$ optical transition frequency. Correlation spectroscopy on the optical transition demonstr…
Collective effects in the interaction of light with ensembles of identical scatterers play an important role in many fields of physics. However, often the term ``identical'' is not accurate due to the presence of hyperfine fields which induce inhomogeneous transition shifts and splittings. Here we develop a formalism based on the Green function method to model the linear response of such inhomogeneous ensembles in one-dimensional waveguides. We obtain a compact formula for the collective spectrum, which exhibits deviations from the uniform frequency shift and broadening expected of two level s…
We study, theoretically and experimentally, electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in two different solid-state systems. Unlike many implementations in homogeneously broadened media, these systems exhibit inhomogeneous broadening of their optical and spin transitions typical of solid-state materials. We observe EIT lineshapes typical of atomic gases, including a crossover into the regime of Autler-Townes splitting, but with the substitution of the inhomogeneous widths for the homogeneous values. We obtain quantitative agreement between experiment and theory for the width of the transpa…
We experimentally demonstrate optical trapping of 87Rb atoms using a two-color evanescent field around an optical nanofiber. In our trapping geometry, a blue-detuned traveling wave whose polarization is nearly parallel to the polarization of a red-detuned standing wave produces significant vector light shifts that lead to broadening of the absorption profile of a near-resonant beam at the trapping site. A model that includes scalar, vector, and tensor light shifts of the probe transition $5S_{1/2}$-$5P_{3/2}$ from the trapping beams, weighted by the temperature-dependent position of the atoms …
We demonstrate photon echoes in Eu$^{3+}$:Y$_{2}$SiO$_{5}$ by controlling the inhomogeneous broadening of the Eu$^{3+}$ $^{7}$F$_{0}\leftrightarrow^{5}$D$_{0}$ optical transition. This transition has a linear Stark shift and we induce inhomogeneous broadening by applying an external electric field gradient. After optical excitation, reversing the polarity of the field rephases the ensemble, resulting in a photon echo. This is the first demonstration of such a photon echo and its application as a quantum memory is discussed.
We investigate theoretically the coupling of a cavity mode to a continuous distribution of emitters. We discuss the influence of the emitters inhomogeneous broadening on the existence and on the coherence properties of the polaritonic peaks. We find that their coherence depends crucially on the shape of the distribution and not only on its width. Under certain conditions the coupling to the cavity protects the polaritonic states from inhomogeneous broadening, resulting in a longer storage time for a quantum memory based on emitters ensembles. When two different ensembles of emitters are couple…
Here we propose a solid-state quantum memory that does not require spectral holeburning, instead using strong rephasing pulses like traditional photon echo techniques. The memory uses external broadening fields to reduce the optical depth and so switch off the collective atom-light interaction when desired. The proposed memory should allow operation with reasonable efficiency in a much broader range of material systems, for instance Er3+ doped crystals which have a transition at 1.5 um. We present analytic theory supported by numerical calculations and initial experiments.
We propose a multi-mode quantum memory protocol able to store the quantum state of the field in a microwave resonator into an ensemble of electronic spins. The stored information is protected against inhomogeneous broadening of the spin ensemble by spin-echo techniques resulting in memory times orders of magnitude longer than previously achieved. By calculating the evolution of the first and second moments of the spin-cavity system variables for realistic experimental parameters, we show that a memory based on NV center spins in diamond can store a qubit encoded on the |0> and |1> Fock states …
Ensembles of solid state defects in diamond make promising quantum sensors with high sensitivity and spatiotemporal resolution. The inhomogeneous broadening and drive amplitude variations across such ensembles have differing impacts on the sensitivity depending on the sensing scheme used, adding to the challenge of choosing the optimal sensing scheme for a particular sensing regime. In this work, we numerically investigate and compare the predicted sensitivity of schemes based on continuous-wave (CW) optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy, pi-pulse ODMR and Ramsey interferom…
Based on the recent experiments on the hybrid quantum system of a superconducting microwave cavity coupling strongly to an inhomogeneous broadening spin ensemble under an external driving field, we use the exact master equation approach to investigate its non-Markovian decoherence dynamics. Here the spin ensemble is made by negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defects in diamond. Our exact master equation theory for open systems depicts the experimental decoherence results and reveals the mechanism how the decoherence induced by the inhomogeneous broadening is suppressed in the strong-coup…

We propose a scheme for sensing of an oscillating field in systems with large inhomogeneous broadening and driving field variation by applying sequences of phased, adiabatic, chirped pulses. The latter act as a double filter for dynamical decoupling, where the adiabatic changes of the mixing angle during the pulses rectify the signal and partially remove frequency noise. The sudden changes between the pulses act as instantaneous $π$ pulses in the adiabatic basis for additional noise suppression. We also use the pulses' phases to correct for other errors, e.g., due to non-adiabatic couplings. O…
We study the dynamics of a spin ensemble strongly coupled to a single-mode resonator driven by external pulses. When the mean frequency of the spin ensemble is in resonance with the cavity mode, damped Rabi oscillations are found between the spin ensemble and the cavity mode which we describe very accurately, including the dephasing effect of the inhomogeneous spin broadening. We demonstrate that a precise knowledge of this broadening is crucial both for a qualitative and a quantitative understanding of the temporal spin-cavity dynamics. On this basis we show that coherent oscillations between…
We show that far field diffraction image of spontaneously scattered Stokes photons can be used for detection of spin entanglement and for metrology of fields gradients in cold atomic ensembles. For many-body states with small or maximum uncertainty in spin-excitation number, entanglement is simply witnessed by the presence of a sharp diffraction peak or dip. Gradient vector of external fields is measured by the displacement of a diffraction peak due to inhomogeneous spin precessions, which suggests a new possibility for precision measurement beyond the standard quantum limit without entangleme…
We demonstrate active control of inhomogeneous dephasing and rephasing for single collective atomic spin excitations (spin-waves) created by spontaneous Raman scattering in a quantum memory based on cold $^{87}$Rb atoms. The control is provided by a reversible external magnetic field gradient inducing an inhomogeneous broadening of the atomic hyperfine levels. We demonstrate experimentally that active rephasing preserves the single photon nature of the retrieved photons. Finally, we show that the control of the inhomogeneous dephasing enables the creation of time-separated spin-waves in a sing…
The possibility of using a solid medium to store few-photon laser pulses as coupled excitations between light and matter is investigated. The role of inhomogeneous broadening and nonadiabaticity are considered, and conditions governing the feasibility of the scheme are derived. The merits of a number of classes of solid are examined.
Continuous change of the propagation direction of a classical control field in the process of its off-resonant Raman interaction with a weak signal field in a three-level atomic medium is suggested for quantum storage of a single-photon wave packet. It is shown that due to phase matching condition such an angular control allows one to reversibly map the single-photon wave packet to the Raman spatial coherence grating. Thus, quantum storage and retrieval can be realized without using inhomogeneous broadening of the atomic transitions or manipulating the amplitude of the control field. Under som…
We perform spectroscopy on the hyperfine splitting of $^{85}$Rb atoms trapped in far-off-resonance optical traps. The existence of a spatially dependent shift in the energy levels is shown to induce an inherent dephasing effect, which causes a broadening of the spectroscopic line and hence an inhomogeneous loss of atomic coherence at a much faster rate than the homogeneous one caused by spontaneous photon scattering. We present here a number of approaches for reducing this inhomogeneous broadening, based on trap geometry, additional laser fields, and novel microwave pulse sequences. We then sh…
We have analyzed an efficient integration of the multi-qubit echo quantum memory into the quantum computer scheme on the atomic resonant ensembles in quantum electrodynamics cavity. Here, one atomic ensemble with controllable inhomogeneous broadening is used for the quantum memory node and other atomic ensembles characterized by the homogeneous broadening of the resonant line are used as processing nodes. We have found optimal conditions for efficient integration of multi-qubit quantum memory modified for this analyzed physical scheme and we have determined a specified shape of the self tempor…
Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is a phenomenon that can provide strong and robust interfacing between optical signals and quantum coherence of electronic spins. In its archetypical form, mainly explored with atomic media, it uses a (near-)homogeneous ensemble of three-level systems, in which two low-energy spin-1/2 levels are coupled to a common optically excited state. We investigate the implementation of EIT with c-axis divacancy color centers in silicon carbide. While this material has attractive properties for quantum device technologies with near-IR optics, implementing EI…
Photon-echo based quantum memories use inhomogeneously broadened, optically thick ensembles of absorbers to store a weak optical signal and employ various protocols to rephase the atomic coherences for information retrieval. We study the application of two consecutive, frequency-chirped control pulses for coherence rephasing in an ensemble with a 'natural' inhomogeneous broadening. Although propagation effects distort the two control pulses differently, chirped pulses that drive adiabatic passage can rephase atomic coherences in an optically thick storage medium. Combined with spatial phase mi…
We study the processes in a quantum dot and its surrounds under resonant excitation with the addition of weak non-resonant light. We observe a decrease in inhomogeneous emission linewidth, as well as previously observed enhancement of resonant fluorescence (RF). Scanning excitation and detection frequencies, we distinguish between homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening. Monte Carlo simulations model the enhanced RF only if we include charge-carrier loss from the quantum dot induced by the resonant laser. The cause of the linewidth narrowing is predominantly independent of the enhanced RF.
A very promising recent trend in applied quantum physics is to combine the advantageous features of different quantum systems into what is called "hybrid quantum technology". One of the key elements in this new field will have to be a quantum memory enabling to store quanta over extended periods of time. Systems that may fulfill the demands of such applications are comb-shaped spin ensembles coupled to a cavity. Due to the decoherence induced by the inhomogeneous ensemble broadening, the storage time of these quantum memories is, however, still rather limited. Here we demonstrate how to overco…
The realization of a high-efficiency microwave single photon detector is a long-standing problem in the field of microwave quantum optics. Here we propose a quantum non-demolition, high-efficiency photon detector that can readily be implemented in present state-of-the-art circuit quantum electrodynamics. This scheme works in a continuous fashion, gaining information about the arrival time of the photon as well as about its presence. The key insight that allows to circumvent the usual limitations imposed by measurement back-action is the use of long-lived dark states in a small ensemble of inho…
We characterize the positively charged exciton (X1+) in single InGaAs quantum dots using resonant laser spectroscopy. Three samples with different dopant species (Be or C as acceptors, Si as a donor) are compared. The p-doped samples exhibit larger inhomogeneous broadening (x3) and smaller absorption contrast (x10) than the n-doped sample. For X1+ in the Be-doped sample, a dot dependent non-linear Fano effect is observed, demonstrating coupling to degenerate continuum states. However, for the C-doped sample the X1+ lineshape and saturation broadening follows isolated atomic transition behaviou…
A robust process for fabricating intrinsic single-photon emitters in silicon nitride has been recently established. These emitters show promise for quantum applications due to room-temperature operation and monolithic integration with the technologically mature silicon nitride photonics platform. Here, the fundamental photophysical properties of these emitters are probed through measurements of optical transition wavelengths, linewidths, and photon antibunching as a function of temperature from 4.2K to 300K. Important insight into the potential for lifetime-limited linewidths is provided throu…
