We examine the changes in kinetic energy dissipation of a turbulent channel flow caused by a spanwise magnetic field. The numerical study is based on our simulation data from [Krasnov, Zikanov, Schumacher, Boeck, Phys. Fluids 20, 095105 (2008)] obtained by direct and large eddy simulations. We find that the Joule dissipation can exceed the viscous dissipation in the weakly dissipative bulk region, but remains comparatively small in the turbulence-generating near-wall region.
The effect of a uniform spanwise magnetic field on a turbulent channel flow is investigated for the case of low magnetic Reynolds number. DNS and LES computations are performed for two values of the hydrodynamic Reynolds number (10^4 and 2\times 10^4) and the Hartmann number varying in a wide range. It is shown that the main effect of the magnetic field is the suppression of turbulent velocity fluctuations and momentum transfer in the wall-normal direction. This leads to drag reduction and transformation of the mean flow profile. The centerline velocity grows, the mean velocity gradients near …
A three-dimensional, steady, laminar shear-layer flow spatially developing under a boundary-layer approximation with mixing, chemical reaction, and imposed normal strain is analyzed. The imposed strain creates a counterflow that stretches the vorticity in the spanwise direction. The equations are reduced to a two-dimensional form for three velocity components. The non-reactive and reactive cases of the two-dimensional form of the governing equations are solved numerically, with consideration of the several of parameter inputs such as Damköhler number, Prandtl number, chemical composition, and …
We consider the influence of transverse confinement on the instability properties of velocity and density distributions reminiscent of those pertaining to exchange flows in stratified inclined ducts, such as the recent experiment of Lefauve et al. (J. Fluid Mech. 848, 508-544, 2018). Using a normal mode streamwise and temporal expansion for flows in ducts with various aspect ratios $B$ and non-trivial transverse velocity profiles, we calculate two-dimensional (2D) dispersion relations with associated eigenfunctions varying in the 'crosswise' direction, in which the density varies, and the span…
The question of optimal spanwise-periodic modification for the stabilisation of spanwise-invariant flows is addressed. A 2nd-order sensitivity analysis is conducted for the linear temporal stability of parallel flows U0 subject to small-amplitude spanwise-periodic modification e*U1, e<<1. Spanwise-periodic modifications have a quadratic effect on stability, i.e. the 1st-order eigenvalue variation is zero. A 2nd-order sensitivity operator is computed from a 1D calculation, allowing one to predict how eigenvalues are affected by any U1, without actually solving for modified eigenvalues/eigenmode…
Through high-fidelity numerical simulation, the effect of the arrangement of micropillars on the flow characteristics and momentum transport has been extensively investigated. The surface friction due to the complex flow characteristics and momentum transport mechanism has also been studied in depth. The micropillars are arranged in a quadrilateral, and different arrangements are acquired by changing the streamwise and spanwise distances between pillar rows. The results show that the streamwise and spanwise pillar distances have their own different influences. When the streamwise pillar distan…
An oscillating spanwise pressure gradient is imposed numerically to control the flow separation and reduce the drag of a turbulent flow in a channel with square bars. The transverse flow produces a maximum drag reduction of 25\%, due to lower pressure and skin-friction drag forces. The pressure drag reduction reaches a maximum of 22\% and is due to a decrease of the positive high pressure in front of the bars and an increase of the low negative pressure behind the bars. The skin-friction drag reduction is caused by a lower wall-shear stress along the cavity between the bars where the flow is f…
This article presents direct numerical simulations of the growth of turbulent spots in the transitional regime of plane Couette flow. A quantitative description of the growth process and of the detail of the quadrupolar flow around the spot is given. Focus is put on formation of spanwise vorticity in the velocity streaks that resembles a secondary shear instability. The main features of the instability (coherence lengths, advection velocity) are studied in the context of the turbulent spot, below and above the threshold Reynolds number of appearance of the oblique turbulent bands of plane Coue…
This article investigates the formation of spanwise vorticity in the velocity streaks of the oblique laminar- turbulent bands of plane Couette flow (PCF) by mean of Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS). The spanwise vorticity is created by a roll-up type development of the streamwise-wall normal shear layer of the velocity streaks. It is advected by the large scale flow along the bands. We propose a criterion on spanwise vorticity which detects these events in order to perform systematic measurements. Beside of the streamwise and spanwise correlation lengths of the rolls, their advection velocit…
Parallel shear flows come with continuous symmetries of translation in the downstream and spanwise direction. As a consequence, flow states that differ in their spanwise or downstream location but are otherwise identical are dynamically equivalent. In the case of travelling waves, this trivial degree of freedom can be removed by going to a frame of reference that moves with the state, thereby turning the travelling wave in the laboratory frame to a fixed point in the comoving frame of reference. We here discuss a general method by which the translational displacements can be removed also for m…
The present work investigates sidewall effects on the characteristics of three-dimensional (3D) compressible flows over a rectangular cavity with aspect ratios of $L/D=6$ and $W/D=2$ at $Re_D=10^4$ using large eddy simulations (LES). For the spanwise-periodic cavity flow, large pressure fluctuations are present in the shear layer and on the cavity aft wall due to spanwise vortex roll-ups and flow impingement. For the finite-span cavity with sidewalls, pressure fluctuations are reduced due to interference to the vortex roll-ups from the sidewalls. Flow oscillations are also reduced by increasin…
This paper aims to numerically verify the large Reynolds number asymptotic theory of magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) flows proposed in the companion paper Deguchi (2019). To avoid any complexity associated with the chaotic nature of turbulence and flow geometry, nonlinear steady solutions of the viscous-resistive magneto-hydrodynamic equations in plane Couette flow have been utilised. Two classes of nonlinear MHD states, which convert kinematic energy to magnetic energy effectively, have been determined. The first class of nonlinear states can be obtained when a small spanwise uniform magnetic fiel…
Recent research has shed light on the role of coherent structures in forming layers when stably stratified turbulence is forced with horizontal shear (Lucas, Caulfield & Kerswell, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 832, 2017, pp. 409-437). Here we extend our previous work to investigate the effect of rigid boundaries on the dynamics by studying stably-stratified plane Couette flow with gravity oriented in the spanwise direction. We observe near-wall layering and associated new mean flows in the form of large scale spanwise-flattened streamwise rolls. The layers exhibit the expected buoyancy scaling $l_z\sim…
Turbulent characteristics within shear layer have been studied, recently, within vegetative canopy, buildings, dunes. Kevin-Helmholtz instability triggered hairpin vortex shedding has been widely concluded as the "signature" of mixing layer analogy. However, convoluted roughness types complicate the observing practice of turbulent evolving progress. To simplify that, spanwise homogeneous roughness has been adopted in this work to capture the streamwise flow alternations under different streamwise roughness element distances. Streamwise successive object distance $λ_x$ is used to show the rough…
We investigate three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics turbulence in the presence of both a large-scale velocity and non-uniform magnetic field. By assuming a turbulence driven by an external forcing with both helical and non-helical spectra, we investigate the combined effect of these two shears on turbulence intensity and turbulent transport represented by turbulent diffusivities (turbulent viscosity, $α$ and $β$ effect) in analogy with Reynolds. We show that turbulence viscosity and diffusivity are quenched for strong flow shear and magnetic field in the limits of weak and strong magnetic fi…
This article presents a modelling of the formation of spanwise vorticity in the turbulent streaks of the oblique bands and spots of transitional plane Couette flow. A functional model is designed to mimic the coherent flow in the streaks. The control parameters of the model are extracted from Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) statistical data. A Reynolds stress is proposed to study the effect on the instability of this additional force maintaining the baseflow. Local (quasi-parallel) temporal stability analysis is performed on that model to investigate the linear development of the spanwise v…
Three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of an incompressible open square cavity flow are conducted. Features of the permanent (non-linear) regime together with the linear stability analysis of a two-dimensional steady base flow are discussed. Spanwise boundary conditions are periodic and control parameters set such that the shear layer is stable against Kelvin-Helmholtz modes. Three branches of destabilising modes are found. The most destabilising branch is associated with steady modes, over a finite range of spanwise wavenumbers. The two other branches provide unsteady modes. Features …
The present paper studies the effects of thermal radiation and mass diffusion on MHD flow over a vertical plate that applies time dependent shear to the fluid. This study is meant to provide framework for improved thermal system where induced automated shear on chemical (fluid) will in- crease velocity of fluid and hence enhances the smooth flow. This study will also throw light on an important aspect of controlling temperature of thermal system in the context of emitting thermal radiation. Exact expressions for velocity field, temperature and mass concentration corresponding to the radiative …
The effect of streamwise-traveling waves of spanwise wall velocity (StTW) on the quasi-streamwise vortices (QSV) populating the near-wall region of turbulent channels is studied via a conditional averaging technique applied to flow snapshots obtained via Direct Numerical Simulation. The analysis by A. Yakeno, Y. Hasegawa, N. Kasagi, "Modification of quasi-streamwise vortical structure in a drag-reduced turbulent channel flow with spanwise wall oscillation", Phys. Fluids 26, 085109 (2014), where the special case of spatially uniform wall oscillation (OW) was considered, is extended to the gener…
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are performed to study the turbulent shear flow of an electrically conducting fluid in a cylindrical container. The flow is driven by the interaction between the radial electric currents ($I$) injected through a large number of small electrodes at the bottom wall and an axial magnetic field. All the numerical parameters, including the geometry of the container, the total injcected currents and the magnetic field, are in line with the experiment performed in J. Fluid Mech. 456, 137-159. First, witth laminar Hartmann layers, three dimensional simulations recove…
Simulations of turbulent fluid flow around long cylindrical structures are computationally expensive because of the vast range of length scales, requiring simplifications such as dimensional reduction. Current dimensionality reduction techniques such as strip-theory and depth-averaged methods do not take into account the natural flow dissipation mechanism inherent in the small-scale three-dimensional (3-D) vortical structures. We propose a novel flow decomposition based on a local spanwise average of the flow, yielding the spanwise-averaged Navier-Stokes (SANS) equations. The SANS equations in…
We present a reduced model for the transition to turbulence in shear flow that is simple enough to admit a thorough numerical investigation while allowing spatio-temporal dynamics that are substantially more complex than those allowed in previous modal truncations. Our model allows a comparison of the dynamics resulting from initial perturbations that are localised in the spanwise direction with those resulting from sinusoidal perturbations. For spanwise-localised initial conditions the subcritical transition to a `turbulent' state (i) takes place more abruptly, with a boundary between laminar…
This study deals with the investigation of MHD flow of Williamson fluid over an infinite rotating disk with the effects of Soret, Dufour, and anisotropic slip. The anisotropic slip and the Soret and Dufour effects are the primary features of this study, which greatly influence the flow, heat and mass transport properties. In simultaneous appearance of heat and mass transfer in a moving fluid, the mass flux generated by temperature gradients is known as the thermal-diffusion or Soret effect and the energy flux created by a composition gradient is called the diffusion-thermo or Dufour effect, ho…
We derive a limit on energy savings in controlled channel flow. For flow in a channel driven by pressure, shear, or any combination of the two, and controlled via wall transpiration or spanwise wall motion, the uncontrolled laminar state requires the least net energy (accounting for the energetic cost of control). Thus, the optimal control solution is to laminarize the flow. Additionally, we raise the possibility of beating this limit. By simultaneously applying wall transpiration and spanwise wall motion, we show that it may be possible to attain sustained sub-laminar energy expenditure in a …
Data from direct numerical simulation of open channel flow over a geometrically rough wall at a bulk Reynolds number of 2900, generated by Chan-Braun et al. ["Force and torque acting on particles in a transitionally rough open-channel flow", J. Fluid Mech. 684, 441--474 (2011), 10.1017/jfm.2011.311] are further analysed with respect to the time and length scales of force and torque acting on the wall-mounted spheres. For the two sizes of spheres in a square arrangement (11 and 49 wall units in diameter, yielding hydraulically smooth and transitionally rough flow, respectively), the spatial str…
A fundamental problem in the field of turbulent skin-friction drag reduction is to determine the performance of the available control techniques at high values of the Reynolds number $Re$. We consider active, predetermined strategies based on spanwise forcing (oscillating wall and streamwise-traveling waves applied to a plane channel flow), and explore via Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) up to $Re_τ=2100$ the rate at which their performance deteriorates as $Re$ is increased. To be able to carry out a comprehensive parameter study, we limit the computational cost of the simulations by adjust…
Rational large Reynolds number matched asymptotic expansions of three-dimensional nonlinear magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) states are concerned. The nonlinear MHD states, assumed to be predominantly driven by a unidirectional shear, can be sustained without any linear instability of the base flow and hence are responsible for subcritical transition to turbulence. Two classes of nonlinear MHD states are found. The first class of nonlinear states emerged out of a nice combination of the purely hydrodynamic vortex/wave interaction theory by Hall \& Smith (1991) and the resonant absorption theories on…
The evolution of turbulent spots in a parallel shear flow is studied by means of full three-dimensional numerical simulations. The flow is bounded by free surfaces and driven by a volume force. Three regions in the spanwise spot cross-section can be identified: a turbulent interior, an interface layer with prominent streamwise streaks and vortices and a laminar exterior region with a large scale flow induced by the presence of the spot. The lift-up of streamwise streaks which is caused by non-normal amplification is clearly detected in the region adjacent to the spot interface. The spot can be…

Turbulent mixed convection in channel flows with heterogeneous surfaces is studied using direct numerical simulations. The relative importance between buoyancy and shear effects, characterized by the bulk Richardson number $Ri_b$, is varied in order to cover the flow regimes of forced, mixed and natural convection, which are associated with different large-scale flow organization. The heterogeneous surface consists of streamwise-aligned ridges, which are known to induce secondary motion in case of forced convection. The large-scale streamwise rolls emerging under smooth-wall mixed convection c…
A statistically stationary turbulence with a mean shear gradient is realized in a flow driven by suitable body forces. The flow domain is periodic in downstream and spanwise directions and bounded by stress free surfaces in the normal direction. Except for small layers near the surfaces the flow is homogeneous. The fluctuations in turbulent energy are less violent than in the simulations using remeshing, but the anisotropy on small scales as measured by the skewness of derivatives is similar and decays weakly with increasing Reynolds number.
The interacting vorticity wave formalism for shear flow instabilities is extended here to the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) setting, to provide a mechanistic description for the stabilising and destabilising of shear instabilities by the presence of a background magnetic field. The interpretation relies on local vorticity anomalies inducing a non-local velocity field, resulting in action-at-a-distance. It is shown here that the waves supported by the system are able to propagate vorticity via the Lorentz force, and waves may interact; existence of instability then rests upon whether the choice of …
The large-scale dynamics of plasmas is well described within the framework of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). However, whenever the ion density of the plasma becomes sufficiently low, the Hall effect is likely to become important. The role of the Hall effect has been studied in several astrophysical plasma processes, such as magnetic reconnection, magnetic dynamo, MHD turbulence or MHD instabilities. In particular, the development of small-scale instabilities is essential to understand the transport properties in a number of astrophysical plasmas. The magneto-rotational instability, which takes pl…
Our goal is to gain new insights into the physics of wave overreflection phenomenon in MHD nonuniform/shear flows changing the existing trend/approach of the phenomenon study. The performed analysis allows to separate from each other different physical processes, grasp their interplay and, by this way, construct the basic physics of the overreflection in incompressible MHD flows with linear shear of mean velocity, ${\bf U}_0=(Sy,0,0)$, that contain two different types of Alfv${\rm \acute{e}}$n waves. These waves are reduced to pseudo- and shear shear-Alfv${\rm \acute{e}}$n waves when wavenumbe…
The separating and reattaching turbulent flow past a rectangular cylinder is studied to describe how small and large scales contribute to the sustaining mechanism of the velocity fluctuations. The work is based on the Anisotropic Generalised Kolmogorov Equations (AGKE), exact budget equations for the second-order structure function tensor in the space of scales and in the physical space. Scale-space energy fluxes show that forward and reverse energy transfers simultaneously occur in the flow, with interesting modelling implications. Over the longitudinal cylinder side, the Kelvin-Helmholtz ins…
