This paper, a continuation of [3], involves a closer study of polynomials of supertropical semirings and their version of tropical geometry in which we introduce the concept of relatively prime polynomials and resultants, with the aid of some topology. Polynomials in one indeterminant are seen to be relatively prime iff they do not have a common tangible root, iff their resultant is tangible. The Frobenius property yields a morphism of supertropical varieties; this leads to a supertropical version of Bézout's theorem. Also, a supertropical variant of factorization is introduced which yields a more comprehensive version of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz than the one given in [3].
Supertropical matrix theory was investigated in [6], whose terminology we follow. In this work we investigate eigenvalues, characteristic polynomials and coefficients of characteristic polynomials of supertropical matrices and their powers, and obtain the analog to the basic property of matrices that any power of an eigenvalue of a matrix is an eigenvalue of the corresponding power of the matrix.
We develop the algebraic polynomial theory for "supertropical algebra," as initiated earlier over the real numbers by the first author. The main innovation there was the introduction of "ghost elements," which also play the key role in our structure theory. Here, we work somewhat more generally over an ordered monoid, and develop a theory which contains the analogs of several basic theorems of classical commutative algebra. This structure enables one to develop a Zariski-type algebraic geometric approach to tropical geometry, viewing tropical varieties as sets of roots of (supertropical) polyn…
Generalizing supertropical algebras, we present a "layered" structure, "sorted" by a semiring which permits varying ghost layers, and indicate how it is more amenable than the "standard" supertropical construction in factorizations of polynomials, description of varieties, properties of the resultant, and for mathematical analysis and calculus, in particular with respect to multiple roots of polynomials. Explicit examples and comparisons are given for various sorting semirings such as the natural numbers and the positive rational numbers, and we see how this theory relates to some recent devel…
The only invertible matrices in tropical algebra are diagonal matrices, permutation matrices and their products. However, the pseudo-inverse $A^\nabla$, defined as $\frac{adj(A)}{det(A)}$, with $det(A)$ being the tropical permanent (also called the tropical determinant) of a matrix $A$, inherits some classical algebraic properties and has some surprising new ones. Defining $B$ and $B'$ to be tropically similar if $B' =A^\nabla BA$, we examine the characteristic (max-)polynomials of tropically similar matrices as well as those of pseudo-inverses. Other miscellaneous results include a new proof …
We describe the ideals, especially the prime ideals, of semirings of polynomials over layered domains, and in particular over supertropical domains. Since there are so many of them, special attention is paid to the ideals arising from layered varieties, for which we prove that every prime ideal is a consequence of finitely many binomials. We also obtain layered tropical versions of the classical Principal Ideal Theorem and Hilbert Basis Theorem.
We give a bracket polynomial expression for intermediate terms between discriminant and resultant for pair of binary forms. As an application of the bracket polynomial expression, we give an algebraic proof of the algebraic independence of intermediate terms, which was shown in the theory of dynamical systems.

In this paper, the result of applying iterative univariate resultant constructions to multivariate polynomials is analyzed. We consider the input polynomials as generic polynomials of a given degree and exhibit explicit decompositions into irreducible factors of several constructions involving two times iterated univariate resultants and discriminants over the integer universal ring of coefficients of the entry polynomials. Cases involving from two to four generic polynomials and resultants or discriminants in one of their variables are treated. The decompositions into irreducible factors we g…
We fix the supports A=(A_1,...,A_k) of a list of tropical polynomials and define the tropical resultant TR(A) to be the set of choices of coefficients such that the tropical polynomials have a common solution. We prove that TR(A) is the tropicalization of the algebraic variety of solvable systems and that its dimension can be computed in polynomial time. The tropical resultant inherits a fan structure from the secondary fan of the Cayley configuration of A and we present algorithms for the traversal of TR(A) in this structure. We also present a new algorithm for recovering a Newton polytope fr…
We characterize polynomials having the same set of nonzero cyclic resultants. Generically, for a polynomial $f$ of degree $d$, there are exactly $2^{d-1}$ distinct degree $d$ polynomials with the same set of cyclic resultants as $f$. However, in the generic monic case, degree $d$ polynomials are uniquely determined by their cyclic resultants. Moreover, two reciprocal (``palindromic'') polynomials giving rise to the same set of nonzero cyclic resultants are equal. In the process, we also prove a unique factorization result in semigroup algebras involving products of binomials. Finally, we discu…
We present a theorem about irreducibility of a polynomial that is the resultant of two others polynomials. The proof of this fact is based on the field theory. We also consider the converse theorem and some examples.
Given a system of n homogeneous polynomials in n variables which is equivariant with respect to the canonical actions of the symmetric group of n symbols on the variables and on the polynomials, it is proved that its resultant can be decomposed into a product of several smaller resultants that are given in terms of some divided differences. As an application, we obtain a decomposition formula for the discriminant of a multivariate homogeneous symmetric polynomial.
Let n be a positive integer. We consider the Sylvester Resultant of f and g, where f is a generic polynomial of degree 2 or 3 and g is a generic polynomial of degree n. If f is a quadratic polynomial, we find the resultant's height. If f is a cubic polynomial, we find tight asymptotics for the resultant's height.
The Rémond resultant attached to a multiprojective variety and a sequence of multihomogeneous polynomials is a polynomial form in the coefficients of the polynomials, which vanishes if and only if the polynomials have a common zero on the variety. We demonstrate that this resultant can be computed as a Cayley determinant of a multigraded Koszul complex, proving a key stabilization property with the aid of local Hilbert functions and the notion of filter-regular sequences. Then we prove that the Rémond resultant vanishes, under suitable hypotheses, with order at least equal to the number of com…
Resultants and Gröbner bases are crucial tools in studying polynomial elimination theory. We investigate relations between the variety of the resultant of two polynomials and the variety of the ideal they generate. Then we focus on the bivariate case, in which the elimination ideal is principal. We study - by means of elementary tools - the difference between the multiplicity of the factors of the generator of the elimination ideal and the multiplicity of the factors of the resultant.
We show that if two monic polynomials with integer coefficients have square-free resultant, then all positive divisors of the resultant arise as the greatest common divisor of the values of the two polynomials at a suitable integer.
Let R be a complete discrete valuation ring with maximal ideal generated by pi. Let f(X) in R[X] be a monic polynomial with nonzero discriminant Delta(f). Let s >= v_pi(Delta(f)) + 1. Suppose given a factorisation of f(X) in (R/pi^s R)[X] into several factors, not necessarily coprime in (R/pi R)[X]. We lift it uniquely to a factorisation of f(X) in R[X]. This generalises the Hensel-Rychlik Lemma, which covers the case of two factors. We work directly with lifts of factorisations into several factors and avoid having to iterate factorisations into two factors. For this purpose we define a resul…
The resultant of two univariate polynomials is an invariant of great importance in commutative algebra and vastly used in computer algebra systems. Here we present an algorithm to compute it over Artinian principal rings with a modified version of the Euclidean algorithm. Using the same strategy, we show how the reduced resultant and a pair of Bézout coefficient can be computed. Particular attention is devoted to the special case of $\mathbf{Z}/n\mathbf{Z}$, where we perform a detailed analysis of the asymptotic cost of the algorithm. Finally, we illustrate how the algorithms can be exploited …
The amoeba of a Laurent polynomial is the image of the corresponding hypersurface under the coordinatewise log absolute value map. In this article, we demonstrate that a theoretical amoeba approximation method due to Purbhoo can be used efficiently in practice. To do this, we resolve the main bottleneck in Purbhoo's method by exploiting relations between cyclic resultants. We use the same approach to give an approximation of the Log preimage of the amoeba of a Laurent polynomial using semi-algebraic sets. We also provide a SINGULAR/SAGE implementation of these algorithms, which shows a signifi…
Effective computation of resultants is a central problem in elimination theory and polynomial system solving. Commonly, we compute the resultant as a quotient of determinants of matrices and we say that there exists a determinantal formula when we can express it as a determinant of a matrix whose elements are the coefficients of the input polynomials. We study the resultant in the context of mixed multilinear polynomial systems, that is multilinear systems with polynomials having different supports, on which determinantal formulas were not known. We construct determinantal formulas for two kin…
We present an exact and complete algorithm to isolate the real solutions of a zero-dimensional bivariate polynomial system. The proposed algorithm constitutes an elimination method which improves upon existing approaches in a number of points. First, the amount of purely symbolic operations is significantly reduced, that is, only resultant computation and square-free factorization is still needed. Second, our algorithm neither assumes generic position of the input system nor demands for any change of the coordinate system. The latter is due to a novel inclusion predicate to certify that a cert…
Let $p$ be a fixed prime, and let $v(a)$ stand for the exponent of $p$ in the prime factorization of the integer $a$. Let $f$ and $g$ be two monic polynomials with integer coefficients and nonzero resultant $r$. Write $S$ for the maximum of $v(\gcd (f(n), g(n)))$ over all integers $n$. It is known that $S \le v(r)$. We give various lower and upper bounds for the least possible value of $v(r)-S$ provided that a given power $p^s$ divides both $f(n)$ and $g(n)$ for all $n$. In particular, the least possible value is $ps^2-s$ for $s\le p$ and is asymptotically $(p-1)s^2$ for large $s$.
