We calculate the bound-state beta^- decay rate of the free neutron. We show that hydrogen in the final state of the decay is produced with a probability of about 99% in the hyperfine state with zero orbital l = 0 and atomic angular momentum F = 0.
We analyse the sensitivity of all experimentally observable asymmetries and energy distributions for the neutron beta-decay with a polarised neutron and unpolarised decay proton and electron and the lifetime of the neutron to contributions of order 10^(-4) of interactions beyond the Standard model (SM).
In the Standard Model of electroweak interactions and in the tree--approximation we calculate the rate and branching ratio of the neutron radiative beta decay with one-real photon emission by taking into account the contributions of the weak magnetism and proton recoil to order 1/m_p of the large proton mass m_p expansion. We find that the obtained contributions of the weak magnetism and proton recoil increase the rate and branching ratio of the neutron radiative beta decay by about 0.70%. This is large compared with the contribution of the weak magnetism and proton recoil of about 0.16% to th…
We analyse the continuum-state and bound-state beta^-decay rates of the neutron. For the calculation of theoretical values of the decay rates we use the new value for the axial coupling constant g_A = 1.2750(9), obtained recently by H. Abele (Progr. Part. Nucl. Phys., 60, 1 (2008)) from the fit of the experimental data on the neutron spin-electron correlation coefficient of the electron energy spectrum of the continuum-state beta^- decay of the neutron. We take into account the contribution of radiative corrections and the scalar and tensor weak couplings. We define correlation coefficients of…
The experimental determination of V_{ud} from neutron beta decay requires accurate values of the neutron lifetime and the ratio of the weak axial-vector to vector coupling constants of the nucleon. The latter is derived from measurements of angular correlation coefficients in the differential decay probability, such as the beta asymmetry parameter A, the neutrino-electron angular correlation coefficient a, or the parameter C of the proton asymmetry. As a probe free from nuclear structure corrections the decay of the free neutron has the potential to provide the most accurate value of V_{ud}. T…
We give a precision analysis of the correlation coefficients of the electron-energy spectrum and angular distribution of the beta decay and radiative beta decay of the neutron with polarized neutron and electron to order 10^(-3). The calculation of correlation coefficients is carried out within the Standard model with contributions of order 10^(-3), caused by the weak magnetism and proton recoil, taken to next-to-leading order in the large proton mass expansion, and with radiative corrections of order "alpha/pi ~ 10^(-3", calculated to leading order in the large proton mass expansion. The obta…
Although well studied, the neutron still offers a unique laboratory for precise tests of Standard Model (SM) predictions. Neutron decay is free of nuclear structure corrections present in nuclear beta decays, and, with a $10^8$ times larger branching ratio than the theoretically cleaner pion beta decay, it is more readily accessible to experimental study than the latter. Measurements at sufficient precision of the neutron lifetime, and of correlations in free neutron beta decay, offer several stringent tests of the SM, including the weak quark couplings (quark-lepton universality), and certain…
We calculate the contributions of weak magnetism and proton recoil of order O(E^2_e/m^2_N)~10^{-5}, i.e. to next-to-next-to-leading order in the large nucleon mass expansion, to the neutron lifetime and correlation coefficients of the neutron beta decay, where E_e and m_N are the electron energy and the nucleon mass, respectively. We analyze the electron-energy and angular distribution for the neutron beta decay with a polarized neutron, a polarized electron and an unpolarized proton. Together with Wilkinson's corrections (Nucl. Phys. A 377, 474 (1982) and radiative corrections of order O(alph…
Low-energy experiments studying single beta decay can serve as sensitive probes of Lorentz invariance that can complement interferometric searches for deviations from this spacetime symmetry. Experimental signatures of a dimension-three operator for Lorentz violation that are unobservable in neutrino oscillations are described for the decay the polarized and unpolarized neutrons as well as for measurements of the spectral endpoint in beta decay.
In the Standard Model (SM) we calculate the decay rate of the neutron radiative beta decay to order "O(α^2/π^2 ~ 10^{-5})", where "α$"is the fine--structure constant, and radiative corrections to order "O(α/π~ 10^{-3})". The obtained results together with the recent analysis of the neutron radiative beta decay to next-to-leading order in the large proton-mass expansion, performed by Ivanov et al. Phys. Rev. D95, 033007 (2017), describe recent experimental data by the RDK II Collaboration (Bales et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 242501 (2016)) within 1.5 standard deviations. We argue a substantial …
Measurements of neutron beta decay observables required to determine $|V_{ud}|$ are reaching the 0.1% accuracy. In this paper we review the calculation of the decay rate of this process, discuss its relevant uncertainties, and obtain an expression that is precise at the $10^{-4}$ level. Our analysis clearly shows the necessity of measurements of $λ$, the ratio of axial/vector couplings. The current situation in neutron beta decay is that one cannot yet quote a single consistent value for $|V_{ud}|$ from it. We also discuss the region of parameter space in the $|V_{ud}|$--$λ$ plane where new ph…
In the minimal supersymmetric extension to the Standard Model, a non-zero lepton number violating coupling lambda'_111 predicts both neutrinoless double beta decay and resonant single slepton production at the LHC. We show that, in this case, if neutrinoless double beta decay is discovered in the next generation of experiments, there exist good prospects to observe single slepton production at the LHC. Neutrinoless double beta decay could otherwise result from a different source (such as a non-zero Majorana neutrino mass). Resonant single slepton production at the LHC can therefore discriminat…
In this talk I review the New Physics reach of semileptonic beta decay experiments, and their interplay with LHC searches. Assuming the new particles are heavy enough we can use an Effective Field Theory approach to analyze the LHC searches, what allows us to perform a direct and model-independent comparison with low-energy experiments.
Limits from neutron beta decay on parameters describing physics beyond the Standard Model are presented. New Physics is described by the most general Lorentz invariant effective Hamiltonian involving vector, scalar and tensor operators and Standard Model fields only. Two-parameter fits to the decay parameters measured in free neutron beta decay have been done, in some cases indicating rather big dependence of the results on g_A/g_V ratio of nucleon form factors at zero four-momentum transfer.
We discuss the effect of the recent change of $V_{\rm us}$ by three standard deviations on the standard model predictions for neutron beta decay observables. We also discuss the effect the experimental error bars of $V_{\rm us}$ have on such predictions. Refined precision tests of the standard model will be made by a combined effort to improve measurements in neutron beta decay and in strangeness-changing decays. By itself the former will yield very precise measurements of $V_{\rm ud}$ and make also very precise predictions for $V_{\rm us}$.
We consider radiative β--decay of the neutron in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory, with an extension including explicit Δdegrees of freedom. We compute the photon energy spectrum as well as the photon polarization; both observables are dominated by the electron bremsstrahlung contribution. Nucleon-structure effects not encoded in the weak coupling constants g_A and g_V are determined at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, and enter at the {\cal O}(0.5%)-level, making a sensitive test of the Dirac structure of the weak currents possible.
In the framework of the Standard Model (SM) a theoretical description of the neutron beta decay is given at the level of 10^{-5}. The neutron lifetime and correlation coefficients of the neutron beta decay for a polarized neutron, a polarized electron and an unpolarized proton are calculated at the account for i) the radiative corrections of order O(αE_e/m_N) ~ 10^{-5} to Sirlin's outer and inner radiative corrections of order O(α/π), ii) the corrections of order O(E^2_e/m^2_N) ~ 10^{-5}, caused by weak magnetism and proton recoil, and iii) Wilkinson's corrections of order 10^{-5} (Wilkinson, …
The potential of large scale Yb-loaded liquid scintillators as proposed for solar neutrino spectroscopy are investigated with respect to double beta decay. The potential for beta-beta- - decay of 176Yb as well as the beta+/EC - decay for 168Yb is discussed. Not only getting for the first time an experimental half-life limit on 176Yb - decay, this will even be at least comparable or better than existing ones from other isotopes. Also for the first time a realistic chance to detect beta+/EC - decay exists. Effects of MeV-neutrinos are discussed as well.
The interest, the status and the perspectives of various experiments in neutron and nuclear beta-decay, muon-decay and pion-decays are discussed. The talk is segmented into a discussion of the decay-rates and of the energy-spectra and correlations. The impact on various scenarios of "new physics" is briefly mentioned; left-right symmetric models are discussed in more detail and the informations gained from the considered experiments is compared to those from other sources.
Bounds and presence of manifest right handed currents in neutron beta decay are reviewed. Assuming the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, current experimental situation imposes very stringent limits on the mixing angle, $-0.00077<ζ<0.00089$, and on the mass eigenstate, $M_2({\rm GeV})\in(291.4,439.9)$, in contradiction with the established lower bound on $M_2$.
We analyse the proton recoil energy and angular distribution of the radiative beta-decay of the neutron to leading order in the large baryon mass expansion by taking into account the contributions of the proton-photon correlations. We show that the account for the proton-photon correlations does not contradict the description of the radiative corrections to the lifetime of the neutron and the proton recoil energy spectrum of the neutron beta-decay in terms of the functions (α/π) g_n(E_e) and (α/π) f_n(E_e), where E_e is the electron energy. In addition we find that the contributions of the pro…
We present a calculation of full one-loop radiative corrections, including the constant term, to the asymmetry parameter of polarised neutron beta decay. This gives the radiative correction to the axial coupling constant $g_A$ extracted from the beta asymmetry so that it ties to $g_A$ that appears in neutron decay lifetime in a consistent renormalisation scheme. We find that the ratio of axial-vector to vector couplings determined from the beta asymmetry, after taking account of the outer radiative correction, is related to the bare value as $G_A/G_V=1.0012 G_A^0/G_V^0$.
The matrix element \Vud of the CKM matrix can be determined by two independent measurements in neutron decay: the neutron lifetime $τ_n$ and the ratio of coupling constants $λ=g_A/g_V$, which is most precisely determined by measurements of the beta asymmetry angular correlation coefficient~$A$. We present recent progress on the determination of these coupling constants.
A complete analysis of proton recoil asymmetry in neutron decay in the first order of radiative and recoil corrections is presented. The possible contributions from new physics are calculated in terms of low energy coupling constants, and the sensitivity of the measured asymmetry to models beyond the Standard model are discussed.
We improve the current predictions of the standard model for neutron beta decay observables and compare them with the currently available ones. Next we study their implications in the possible detection of new physics. We discuss where the limitations are and where further efforts should be directed.
A formalism for the study of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) effects is discussed and used to analyze the effects of charge symmetry breaking on neutron beta decay. The effect of including CSB reduces the beta decay matrix element by an amount on the order of $10^{-4}$, a value much larger than the previous estimate. A much smaller contribution due to proton recoil is treated as well, which is found to be on the order of $10^{-6}$. The current uncertainty in the value of $V_{ud}$ is also of order $10^{-4}$. An improvement of that uncertainty by an order of magnitude would require that charge sy…
We perform a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) statistical analysis of a number of measured ground-state-to-ground-state single $β^+$/electron-capture and $β^-$ decays in the nuclear mass range A = 62 - 142. The corresponding experimental comparative half-lives (log ft values) are compared with the theoretical ones obtained by the use of the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) with G-matrix based effective interactions. The MCMC analysis is performed separately for 47 isobaric triplets and 28 more extended isobaric chains of nuclei to extract values and uncertainties…
The correlation coefficients a, A, and B in neutron beta-decay are proportional to the ratio of the axial-vector to vector weak coupling constants, g_A/g_V, to leading recoil order. With the advent of the next generation of neutron decay experiments, the recoil-order corrections to these expressions become experimentally accessible, admitting a plurality of Standard Model (SM) tests. The measurement of both a and A, e.g., allows one to test the conserved-vector-current (CVC) hypothesis and to search for second-class currents (SCC) independently. The anticipated precision of these measurements …
We propose to use charged-current neutrino-nucleus interactions as a probe of the many virtual transitions involved in neutrinoless double-beta decay. By performing neutrino and anti-neutrino interaction studies on the initial and final nucleus respectively, one can get information on the two branches involved in the double-beta decay process. The measurement of such reactions could help to further constrain double-beta decay predictions on the half-lives.
Within the standard V - A theory of weak interactions, Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and the linear sigma-model (LsM) of strong low-energy hadronic interactions we analyse gauge and infrared properties of hadronic structure of the neutron and proton in the neutron beta decay to leading order in the large nucleon mass expansion. We show that the complete set of Feynman diagrams describing radiative corrections of order O(α/π), induced by hadronic structure of the nucleon, to the rate of the neutron beta decay is gauge non-invariant and unrenormalisable. We show that a gauge non-invariant contri…
Within the standard V - A theory of weak interactions, Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and the linear sigma-model (LsM) of strong low-energy hadronic interactions we analyse gauge properties of hadronic structure of the neutron and proton in the neutron radiative beta-decay. We show that the Feynman diagrams, describing contributions of hadronic structure to the amplitude of the neutron radiative beta-decay in the tree-approximation for strong low-energy interactions in the LsM, are gauge invariant. In turn, the complete set of Feynman diagrams, describing the contributions of hadron-photon inte…
Within the standard V - A theory of weak interactions, Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and the linear sigma-model (LsM) of strong low-energy hadronic interactions we analyse infrared properties of hadronic structure of the neutron and proton in the neutron beta decays to leading order in the large nucleon mass expansion. We confirm validity and high confidence level of contributions of hadronic structure of the nucleon to the radiative corrections, calculated by Sirlin (Phys. Rev. 164, 1767 (1967)) to leading order in the large nucleon mass expansion. At the level of order 10^{-5} relative to Si…
Deviations from Lorentz and CPT invariance in the neutrino sector and their observable effects in double beta decay are studied. For two-neutrino double beta decay, a spectral distortion and its properties are characterized for different isotopes. Majorana couplings for Lorentz violation are studied and shown to trigger neutrinoless double beta decay even for negligible Majorana mass. Existing data are used to obtain first limits of $5 \times 10^{-9}$ for 18 individual coefficients and attainable sensitivities in current and future experiments are presented.
In a previous article [Phys. Rev. D 79, 053001 (2009)] we estimated the correlated uncertainties associated to the nuclear matrix elements (NME) of neutrinoless double beta decay (0 nu beta beta) within the quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA). Such estimates encompass recent independent calculations of NMEs, and can thus still provide a fair representation of the nuclear model uncertainties. In this context, we compare the claim of 0 nu beta beta decay in Ge-76 with recent negative results in Xe-136 and in other nuclei, and we infer the lifetime ranges allowed or excluded at 90% C.…
We explore the possibility that the weak interaction violates Lorentz, and in particular rotational, invariance in neutron and allowed nuclear beta decay. A broad class of Lorentz-violating effects is considered, in which the standard propagator of the W-boson acquires an additional Lorentz-violating tensor. The general decay rate for allowed beta decay that incorporates such a modified propagator is derived. The resulting Lorentz-violating signals are discussed for the different types of beta-decay transitions, Fermi, Gamow-Teller, and mixed. We study the implications of our formalism for ded…
We calculate the correlation coefficients of the electron-energy and electron-antineutrino angular distribution of the neutron beta decay with polarized electron and unpolarised neutron and proton. The calculation is carried out within the Standard Model (SM) with the contributions, caused by the weak magnetism, proton recoil and radiative corrections of order of 10^{-3}, Wilkinson's corrections of order 10^{-5}$(Wilkinson, Nucl. Phys. A377, 474 (1982) and Ivanov et al., Phys. Rev. C95, 055502 (2017)) and the contributions of interactions beyond the SM. The obtained results can be used for the…
We investigate the contribution to the angular correlation coefficients of the neutron beta decay within the R-parity violating (RPV) minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). The RPV effects contribute to the scalar interaction at the tree level. The effective scalar interaction of the neutron beta decay is constructed by making use of the relation between isospin asymmetries and the proton-neutron mass difference. On the basis of the recent update of the analyses of the superallowed Fermi transitions and the recent measurement of transverse polarization of the emitted electrons at PSI, w…
We analyse the electron--energy and angular distribution of the neutron beta decay with polarized neutron and electron and unpolarized proton, calculated in Phys. Rev. C 95, 055502 (2017) within the Standard Model (SM), by taking into account the contributions of interactions beyond the SM. After the absorption of vector and axial vector contributions by the axial coupling constant and Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element (Bhattacharya et al., Phys. Rev. D 85, 054512 (2012) and so on) these are the contributions of scalar and tensor interactions only. The neutron lifetime, correlatio…
We compute the electromagnetic corrections to neutron beta decay using a low-energy hadronic effective field theory. We identify and compute new radiative corrections arising from virtual pions that were missed in previous studies. The largest correction is a percent-level shift in the axial charge of the nucleon proportional to the electromagnetic part of the pion-mass splitting. Smaller corrections, comparable to anticipated experimental precision, impact the $β$-$ν$ angular correlations and the $β$-asymmetry. We comment on implications of our results for the comparison of the experimentally…
We show that the commonly used criterion for beta equilibrium in neutrino-transparent dense nuclear matter becomes invalid as temperatures rise above 1 MeV. Such temperatures are attained in neutron star mergers. By numerically computing the relevant weak interaction rates we find that the correct criterion for beta equilibrium requires an isospin chemical potential that can be as large as 10-20 MeV, depending on the temperature at which neutrinos become trapped.
We start from a Left-Right Symmetric Model and we analyze the beta decay of the free neutron $n\to p+e^{-}+\barν_{e}$. We applied this model to incorporate the right currents, whereby we propose an amplitude whose leptonic part contains the parameter $λ$ defined as left-right asymmetry parameter which measures the parity violation. The analysis consists of seeing how the spectrum of energy of the electrons, the total rate of decay, and the lifetime $τ$ of the neutron are affected by the left-right asymmetry parameter, besides taking into account corrections of mass, that is, $m_{e}\neq 0$, $m_…
The sensitivity for double beta decay studies of Xe-134 and Xe-124 is investigated assuming a potential large scale Xe experiment developed for dark matter searches depleted in Xe-136. The opportunity for an observation of the 2nu double beta decay of Xe-134 is explored for various scenarios. A positive observation should be possible for all calculated nuclear matrix elements. The detection of 2$ν$ ECEC of Xe-124 can be probed in all scenarios covering the theoretical predicted half-life uncertainties and a potential search for Xe-126 is discussed. The sensitivity to beta+/EC decay of Xe-124 i…
We calculate the cross section of the inverse beta decay process, $ν_e+n\to p+e$, in a background magnetic field which is much smaller than $m_p^2/e$. Using exact solutions of the Dirac equation in a constant magnetic field, we find the cross section for arbitrary polarization of the initial neutrons. The cross section depends on the direction of the incident neutrino even when the initial neutron is assumed to be at rest and has no net polarization. Possible implications of the result are discussed.
The contribution of the R-parity violating minimal supersymmetric standard model to the neutron beta decay at the one-loop level is investigated. It is found that the baryon number and R-parity violating interactions contribute to the D correlation through one-loop corrections, while the tree level prediction is vanishing. The Fierz interference term is also investigated at the one-loop level by considering the lepton number and R-parity violating interactions. We show that future experimental progress can provide us with better constraints on some of the combinations of R-parity violating cou…
We assess the ability of future neutron beta decay measurements of up to O(10^{-4}) precision to falsify the standard model, particularly the V-A law, and to identify the dynamics beyond it. To do this, we employ a maximum likelihood statistical framework which incorporates both experimental and theoretical uncertainties. Using illustrative combined global fits to Monte Carlo pseudodata, we also quantify the importance of experimental measurements of the energy dependence of the angular correlation coefficients as input to such efforts, and we determine the precision to which ill-known "second…
We analyze the contributions of the one-pion-pole (OPP) exchange, caused by strong low-energy interactions, and the pseudoscalar interaction beyond the Standard Model (BSM) to the correlation coefficients of the neutron beta-decays for polarized neutrons, polarized electrons and unpolarized protons. The strength of contributions of pseudoscalar interactions is defined by the effective coupling constant C_ps = C^(OPP)_ps + C^(BSM)_ps. We show that the contribution of the OPP exchange is of order C^(OPP)_ps ~ - 10^(-5). The effective coupling constant C^(BSM)_ps of the pseudoscalar interaction B…
The inverse $β$-decay reaction, anti-nu_e + p --> e^+ + n, for low-energy anti-neutrinos coming from nuclear reactors is of great current interest in connection with high-precision measurements of the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$. We have previously derived analytic expressions, up to next-to-leading order in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory, for the radiative corrections (RCs) and the nucleon-recoil corrections both for this reaction and for the related neutron $β$-decay process. We investigate here the numerical consequences of these analytic expressions. We show that the recoil cor…
Starting with the basic Lagrangian of the Standard Model, the radiative corrections to the neutron beta-decay are acquired. The electroweak interactions are consistently taken into consideration amenably to the Weinberg-Salam theory. The effect of the strong quark-quark interactions on the neutron beta-decay is parameterized by introducing the nucleon electromagnetic form factors and the nucleon weak transition current specified by the form factors g_V, g_A, ... The radiative corrections to the total decay probability W and to the asymmetry coefficient of the electron momentum distribution A o…
As we have pointed out in (arXiv:1806.10107 [hep-ph]), the existence of neutron dark matter decay modes "n -> chi + anything", where "chi" is a dark matter fermion, for the solution of the neutron lifetime problem changes priorities and demands to describe the neutron lifetime "tau_n = 888.0(2.0)s", measured in beam experiments and defined by the decay modes "n -> p + anything", in the Standard Model (SM). The latter requires the axial coupling constant "lambda" to be equal to "lambda = - 1.2690" (arXiv:1806.10107 [hep-ph]). Since such an axial coupling constant is excluded by experimental dat…
The proton asymmetry parameter C in neutron decay describes the correlation between neutron spin and proton momentum. In this Letter, the first measurement of this quantity is presented. The result C=-0.2377(26) agrees with the Standard Model expectation. The coefficient C provides an additional parameter for new and improved Standard Model tests. From a differential analysis of the same data (assuming the Standard Model), we obtain lambda=-1.275(16) as ratio of axial-vector and vector coupling constant.
A method for the general analysis of the sensitivities of neutron beta-decay experiments to manifestations of possible deviations from the Standard model is proposed. In a consistent fashion, we take into account all known (radiative and recoil) corrections which are incorporated within the Standard Model to provide a description of angular correlations in neutron decay in the first order of approximation, or down to the level of $\sim 10^{-5}$. The contributions from models beyond the Standard model are, for low energy neutron decay, parameterized in terms of vector, axial-vector, scalar and …
We analyze the constraints on neutrino mass spectra with extra sterile neutrinos as implied by the LSND experiment. The various mass related observables in neutrinoless double beta decay, tritium beta decay and cosmology are discussed. Both neutrino oscillation results as well as recent cosmological neutrino mass bounds are taken into account. We find that some of the allowed mass patterns are severely restricted by the current constraints, in particular by the cosmological constraints on the total sum of neutrino masses and by the non-maximality of the solar neutrino mixing angle. Furthermore…
The universal radiative corrections common to neutron and super-allowed nuclear beta decays (also known as ``inner'' corrections) are revisited in light of a recent dispersion relation study that found $+2.467(22)\%$, i.e.~about $2.4σ$ larger than the previous evaluation. For comparison, we consider several alternative computational methods. All employ an updated perturbative QCD four-loop Bjorken sum rule (BjSR) defined QCD coupling supplemented with a nucleon form factor based Born amplitude to estimate axial-vector induced hadronic contributions. In addition, we now include hadronic contrib…
In this brief review we discuss the generation of Majorana neutrino masses through the see-saw mechanism, the theory of neutrinoless double-beta decay, the implications of neutrino oscillation data for the effective Majorana mass, taking into account the recent Daya Bay measurement of theta_13, and the interpretation of the results of neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments.
Radiative corrections to the lifetime and angular correlation coefficients of neutron beta-decay are evaluated in effecitive field theory. We also evaluate the lowest order nucleon recoil corrections, including weak-magnetism. Our results agree with those of the long-range and model-independent part of previous calculations. In an effective theory the model-dependent radiative corrections are replaced by well-defined low-energy constants. The effective field theory allows a systematic evaluation of higher order corrections to our results to the extent that the relevant low-energy constants are…
We assess how well next generation neutrinoless double beta decay and normal neutrino beta decay experiments can answer four fundamental questions. 1) If neutrinoless double beta decay searches do not detect a signal, and if the spectrum is known to be inverted hierarchy, can we conclude that neutrinos are Dirac particles? 2) If neutrinoless double beta decay searches are negative and a next generation ordinary beta decay experiment detects the neutrino mass scale, can we conclude that neutrinos are Dirac particles? 3) If neutrinoless double beta decay is observed with a large neutrino mass el…
The physics potential of neutrinoless double beta decay is discussed. Furthermore, experimental considerations are presented as well as the current status of experiments. Finally an outlook towards the future, work on nuclear matrix elements and alternative processes is given.
The relativistic theory of the inverse beta-decay of polarized neutron, $ν_{e} + n \to p + e ^{-}$, in strong magnetic field is developed. For the proton wave function we use the exact solution of the Dirac equation in the magnetic filed that enables us to account exactly for effects of the proton momentum quantization in the magnetic field and also for the proton recoil motion. The effect of nucleons anomalous magnetic moments in strong magnetic fields is also discussed. We examine the cross section for different energies and directions of propagation of the initial neutrino accounting for ne…
