Possible existence of the primordial magnetic fields has affected the structure formation of the universe. In this paper it is shown that the initial conditions for density perturbations with magnetic fields derived in previous works are inconsistent with Einstein equations. We find that this inconsistency arises due to the unwanted cancellation of contributions from the magnetic fields and primordial radiations. A complete set of equations and consistent initial conditions in the long wavelength limit are given with an explicit derivation in the covariant approach with CDM frame, by newly taking into account a non-relativistic matter contribution in the radiation dominated era. By solving these equations numerically, we derive the angular spectrum of cosmic microwave background anisotropies and the matter power spectrum with magnetic fields. We find that the amplitude of the angular power spectrum of CMB anisotropies can alter at most a order of magnitude at $l \lesssim 4000$ compared with the previous results in the literature.
We study limits on a primordial magnetic field arising from cosmological data, including that from big bang nucleosynthesis, cosmic microwave background polarization plane Faraday rotation limits, and large-scale structure formation. We show that the physically-relevant quantity is the value of the effective magnetic field, and limits on it are independent of how the magnetic field was generated.
The observables of the perturbed universe, CMB anisotropy and large structures, depend on a set of cosmological parameters, as well as, the assumed nature of primordial perturbations. In particular, the shape of the primordial power spectrum (PPS) is, at best, a well motivated assumption. It is known that the assumed functional form of the PPS in cosmological parameter estimation can affect the best fit parameters and their relative confidence limits. In this paper, we demonstrate that a specific assumed form actually drives the best fit parameters into distinct basins of likelihood in the spa…
Experimentally distinguishing different primordial universe paradigms that lead to the Big Bang model is an outstanding challenge in modern cosmology and astrophysics. We show that a generic type of signals that exist in primordial universe models can be used for such purpose. These signals are induced by tiny oscillations of massive fields and manifest as features in primordial density perturbations. They are capable of recording the time-dependence of the scale factor of the primordial universe, and therefore provide direct evidence for specific paradigm.
In the presence of the primordial magnetic field, initial vector (vorticity) perturbations produce cosmological Alfven waves and leave imprints on cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropy. We have investigated imprints of cosmological Alfven waves in CMB anisotropy. For data constraints, we have used the power spectrum of the recent CMB observations, and correlations estimated from WMAP Internal Linear Combination (ILC) maps. Our analysis shows 3 sigma evidence of cosmological Alfven waves. Using the 3 sigma limit from our analysis and the Alfven velocity limit…
In a recent article R. T. Cahill claims that the cosmological model based on his "new physics of a dynamical 3-space" resolves the CMB-BBN Lithium-7 and Helium-4 abundance anomalies. In this note it is shown that this conclusion is wrong, resulting from a misunderstanding. In fact, primordial nucleosynthesis in this non-standard cosmological model exacerbates the LIthium-7 problem and creates new problems for primordial Helium-4 and Deuterium.
We study, by numerical methods, the time evolution of scalar perturbations in radiation era of Randall-Sundrum braneworld cosmology. Our results confirm an existence of the enhancement of perturbation amplitudes (near horizon crossing), discovered recently. We suggest the approximate solution of equations of the perturbation theory in the high energy regime, which predicts that the enhancement factor is asymptotically constant, as a function of scale. We discuss the application of this result for the problem of primordial black hole production in braneworld cosmology.
We study the contribution to the primordial curvature perturbation on observational scales generated by the reheating field in massless preheating. To do so we use lattice simulations and a recent extension to the $δN$ formalism. The work demonstrates the functionality of these techniques for calculating the observational signatures of models in which non-perturbative reheating involves a light scalar field.
During its early evolution the Universe provided a laboratory to probe fundamental physics at high energies. Relics from those early epochs, such as the light elements synthesized during primordial nucleosynthesis when the Universe was only a few minutes old, and the cosmic background photons, last scattered when the protons (and alphas) and electrons (re)combined some 400 thousand years later, may be used to probe the standard models of cosmology and of particle physics. The internal consistency of primordial nucleosynthesis is tested by comparing the predicted and observed abundances of the …
The standard nonlinear perturbation theory of the gravitational instability is extended to incorporate the nonlocal bias, redshift-space distortions, and primordial non-Gaussianity. We show that local Eulerian bias is not generally compatible to local Lagrangian bias in nonlinear regime. The Eulerian and Lagrangian biases are nonlocally related order by order in the general perturbation theory. The relation between Eulerian and Lagrangian kernels of density perturbations with biasing are derived. The effects of primordial non-Gaussianity and redshift-space distortions are also incorporated in …
Future galaxy redshift surveys aim at probing the clustering of the cosmic large-scale structure with unprecedented accuracy, thus complementing cosmic microwave background experiments in the quest to deliver the most precise and accurate picture ever of our Universe. Analyses of such measurements are usually performed within the context of the so-called vanilla LCDM model - the six-parameter phenomenological model which, for instance, emerges from best fits against the recent data obtained by the Planck satellite. Here, we show that such an approach is prone to subtle systematics when the Gau…
A claimed detection of cosmological tensor perturbations from inflation via B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background requires distinguishing other possible B-mode sources. One such potential source of confusion is primordial magnetic fields. For sufficiently low-amplitude B-mode signals, the microwave background temperature and polarization power spectra from power-law tensor perturbations and from a power-law primordial magnetic field are indistinguishable. However, we show that such a magnetic field will induce a small-scale Faraday rotation which is detectable using four-point…
The possibility that a relevant fraction of the dark matter might be comprised of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) has been seriously reconsidered after LIGO's detection of a $\sim 30 M_{\odot}$ binary black holes merger. Despite the strong interest in the model, there is a lack of studies on possible cosmological implications and effects on cosmological parameters inference. We investigate correlations with the other standard cosmological parameters using cosmic microwave background observations, finding significant degeneracies, especially with the tilt of the primordial power spectrum and the …
We show a primordial non-linear "f_NL" term may produce unphysically large CMB anisotropy for a red-tilted primordial power spectrum (n<1), because of coupling to primordial fluctuation on the largest scale. We consider a primordial power spectrum models of a running spectral index, and a transition at very low wavenumbers. We find that only negative running spectral index models are allowed, provided that there is no transition at a low wavenumbers (i.e. k<<1). For models of a constant spectral index, we find log(k_c/k_0)> -184, at 1 sigma level, on the transition scale of sharp cut-off model…
The redshift dependence of the abundance of galaxy clusters is very sensitive to the statistical properties of primordial density perturbations. It can thus be used to probe small deviations from Gaussian initial conditions. Such deviations constitute a very important signature of many inflationary scenarios, and are thus expected to provide crucial information on physical processes which took place in the very early Universe. We have determined the biases which may be introduced in the estimation of cosmological parameters by wrongly assuming the absence of primordial non-Gaussianities. Altho…
It is well known that CMB temperature anisotropies and polarization can be used to probe the metric perturbations in the early universe. Presently, there exist neither any observational detection of tensor modes of primordial metric perturbations nor of primordial non-Gaussianity. In such a scenario, primordial power spectrum of scalar metric perturbations is the only correlation function of metric perturbations (presumably generated during inflation) whose effects can be directly probed through various observations. To explore the possibility of any deviations from the simplest picture of the…
5D models with one 3D brane and one infinite extra dimension are studied. Matter is confined to the brane, gravity extends to the bulk. Models with positive and negative tension of the brane are studied. Cosmological solutions on the brane are obtained by solving the generalized Friedmann equation. As the input in cosmological solutions we use the present-time observational cosmological parameters. We find constraints on dimensionless combinations of scales of 5D models which follow from the requirement that the models reproduce the data on production of ${}^4 He$ in primordial nucleosynthesis…
We study the effect of the nonlinear relation between density and curvature perturbations on the formation of PBHs. By calculating the variance and skewness of the density perturbation we derive the non-Gaussian property. As a criterion for PBH formation, the compaction function is used and it is found that larger curvature perturbations are required due to the nonlinear effect. We estimate the PBH abundance based on the Press-Schechter formalism with non-Gaussian probability density function during Radiation dominated era. It is found that the nonlinear effect slightly suppresses the PBH form…
The best-fit values of the density parameter and the amplitude of the linear density power spectrum obtained from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature field scanned by the Planck satellite are found to notably disagree with those estimated from the abundance of galaxy clusters observed in the local universe. Basically, the observed cluster counts are significantly lower than the prediction of the standard flat LambdaCDM model with the key cosmological parameters set at the Planck best-fit values. We show that this inconsistency between the local and the early universe can be well …
The properties of primordial curvature perturbations on small scales are still unknown while those on large scales have been well probed by the observations of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies and the large scale structure. In this paper, we propose the reconstruction method of primordial curvature perturbations on small scales through the merger rate of binary primordial black holes, which could form from large primordial curvature perturbation on small scales.
We consider the stochastic background of gravitational waves produced during the radiation-dominated hot big bang as a constraint on the primordial density perturbation on comoving length scales much smaller than those directly probed by the cosmic microwave background or large-scale structure. We place weak upper bounds on the primordial density perturbation from current data. Future detectors such as BBO and DECIGO will place much stronger constraints on the primordial density perturbation on small scales.
We show that primordial black holes can be produced from the collapse of large isocurvature perturbations of the cold dark matter. We develop a novel procedure to compute the resulting black hole abundance by studying matched perturbations of matter-only universes, and we use our procedure to translate observational constraints on black hole abundances into model-independent constraints on cold dark matter isocurvature perturbations over a wide range of scales. The constraint on the typical amplitude of the primordial perturbations weakens slightly slower than linearly on small scales.
The cosmological background of higher order vector modes can be generated by the first order scalar perturbations. We investigate the second order and the third order vector modes systematically. The explicit expressions of two point functions $\langle V^{(n),λ}V^{(n),λ'} \rangle$$\left(n=2,3\right)$ and power spectra corresponded are presented. In the case of a monochromatic primordial power spectrum, the second order vector modes do not exist. However, the third order vector modes can be generated by a monochromatic primordial power spectrum. And it is found that the third order vector modes…
Recently we have proposed a novel method to probe primordial gravitational waves from upper bounds on the abundance of primordial black holes (PBHs). When the amplitude of primordial tensor perturbations generated in the early Universe is fairly large, they induce substantial scalar perturbations due to their second-order effects. If these induced scalar perturbations are too large when they reenter the horizon, then PBHs are overproduced, their abundance exceeding observational upper limits. That is, primordial tensor perturbations on superhorizon scales can be constrained from the absence of…
Primordial black holes and secondary gravitational waves can be used to probe the small scale physics at very early time. For secondary gravitational waves produced after the horizon reentry, we derive an analytical formula for the time integral of the source and analytical behavior of the time dependence of the energy density of induced gravitational waves is obtained. By proposing a piecewise power law parametrization for the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations, we use the observational constraints on primordial black hole dark matter to obtain an upper bound on the power sp…
We study the generation of the primordial curvature perturbation in multi-field inflation. Considering both the evolution of the perturbation during inflation and the effects generated at the end of inflation, we present a general formula for the curvature perturbation. We provide the analytic expressions of the power spectrum, spectral tilt and non-Gaussianity for the separable potentials of two inflaton scalars, and apply them to some specific models.
Primordial black holes (PBHs) could account for all or part of dark matter, as well as for some LIGO events. We discuss the spins of primordial black holes produced in different cosmological scenarios, with the emphasis on recently discovered possibilities. PBHs produced as a horizon-size collapse of density perturbations are known to have very small spins. In contrast, PBHs resulting from assembly of matterlike objects (particles, Q-balls, oscillons, etc.) can have large or small spins depending on their formation history and the efficiency of radiative cooling. We show that scalar radiation …
Constraints on the main cosmological parameters using CMB or large scale structure data are usually based on power-law assumption of the primordial power spectrum (PPS). However, in the absence of a preferred model for the early universe, this raises a concern that current cosmological parameter estimates are strongly prejudiced by the assumed power-law form of PPS. In this paper, for the first time, we perform cosmological parameter estimation allowing the free form of the primordial spectrum. This is in fact the most general approach to estimate cosmological parameters without assuming any p…
We briefly review the need to perform renormalization of inflationary perturbations to properly work out the physical power spectra. We also summarize the basis of (momentum-space) renormalization in curved spacetime and address several misconceptions found in recent literature on this subject.
We observationally examine cosmological models based on primordial power spectra with quantized wavevectors. Introducing a linearly quantized power spectrum with $k_0=3.225\times10^{-4}\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ and spacing $Δk = 2.257 \times 10^{-4} \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ provides a better fit to the Planck 2018 observations than the concordance baseline, with $Δχ^2 = -8.55$. Extending the results of Lasenby et al [1], we show that the requirement for perturbations to remain finite beyond the future conformal boundary in a universe containing dark matter and a cosmological constant results in a linearly …
As a candidate bound for the Binary Black Hole (BBH) merger events detected by LIGO/Virgo, Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) provide a useful tool to investigate the primordial curvature perturbations on small scales. Using the GWTC-1 to GWTC-3 catalogs, under the scenario that PBHs originate from large primordial curvature perturbations on small scales during inflationary epoch, we for the first time reconstruct the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations on small scales. It is found that the value of the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum is enhanced to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-2})…
Primordial black holes may have formed in the radiative era of the early Universe from the collapse of large enough amplitude perturbations of the metric. These correspond to non linear energy density perturbations characterized by an amplitude larger than a certain threshold, measured when the perturbations reenter the cosmological horizon. The process of primordial black hole formation is studied here within spherical symmetry, using the gradient expansion approximation in the long wavelength limit, where the pressure gradients are small, and the initial perturbations are functions only of a…
In this paper we study the generation of primordial perturbation with a modified dispersion relation in various cosmological evolutions. We stress that the formation of the power spectrum is strongly dependent on the background. Working in a bounce model with a matter-like contracting phase, we obtain a red tilt spectrum due to the modified dispersion relation.
We propose a novel method to probe primordial gravitational waves by means of primordial black holes (PBHs). When the amplitude of primordial tensor perturbations on comoving scales much smaller than those relevant to Cosmic Microwave Background is very large, it induces scalar perturbations due to second-order effects substantially. If the amplitude of resultant scalar perturbations becomes too large, then PBHs are overproduced to a level that is inconsistent with a variety of existing observations constraining their abundance. This leads to upper bounds on the amplitude of initial tensor per…
Phase transitions in the early universe can readily create an observable stochastic gravitational wave background. We show that such a background necessarily contains anisotropies analogous to those of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) of photons, and that these too may be within reach of proposed gravitational wave detectors. Correlations within the gravitational wave anisotropies and their cross-correlations with the CMB can provide new insights into the mechanism underlying primordial fluctuations, such as multi-field inflation, as well as reveal the existence of non-standard ``hidden s…
Scaler and tensor perturbations couple nonlinearly with each other in the Einstein-Hilbert action. We show that such interaction naturally leads to the quantum decoherence of the primordial perturbations during inflation at horizon crossing. The dominant interaction Hamiltonian contributing to decoherence is identified and the master equation responsible for the decohering process is derived.
There is a growing expectation that the gravitational wave detectors will start probing the stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds in the following years. We explore the spectral shapes of gravitational waves induced to second order by scalar perturbations and presumably have been produced in the early universe. We calculate the gravitational wave spectra generated during radiation and kination eras together with the associated primordial black hole counterpart. We employ power spectra for the primordial curvature perturbation generated by $α$-attractors and nonminimal derivative coupling i…
Compared to primordial perturbations on large scales, roughly larger than $1$ megaparsec, those on smaller scales are not severely constrained. We revisit the issue of probing small-scale primordial perturbations using gravitational waves (GWs), based on the fact that, when large-amplitude primordial perturbations on small scales exist, GWs with relatively large amplitudes are induced at second order in scalar perturbations, and these induced GWs can be probed by both existing and planned gravitational-wave projects. We use accurate methods to calculate these induced GWs and take into account …
Dark matter(DM) is the only possible candidate which would be apart from the thermal equilibrium before Big Bang nucleosynthesis(BBN) in accordance with current DM searches. In this work, we report a generic scenario that primordial perturbation of dark matter(PPDM) can be, effectively, generated and encoded with primordial information of very early universe up to the reheating era. We present an analytical solution of the whole evolution of PPDM. A novel and strong constraint on the reheating process imposed by primordial gravitational wave(PGW) is obtained for the first time. It indicates th…
We consider the process of primordial black hole (PBH) formation originated from primordial curvature perturbations produced during waterfall transition (with tachyonic instability), at the end of hybrid inflation. It is known that in such inflation models, rather large values of curvature perturbation amplitudes can be reached, which can potentially cause a significant PBH production in the early Universe. The probability distributions of density perturbation amplitudes in this case can be strongly non-Gaussian, which requires a special treatment. We calculated PBH abundances and PBH mass spe…
The observational data of primordial black holes and scalar-induced gravitational waves can constrain the primordial curvature perturbation at small scales. We parameterize the primordial curvature perturbation by a broken power law form and find that it is consistent with many inflation models that can produce primordial black holes, such as nonminimal derivative coupling inflation, scalar-tensor inflation, Gauss-Bonnet inflation, and K/G inflation. The constraints from primordial black holes on the primordial curvature power spectrum with the broken power law form are obtained, where the fra…
We study effects on the luminosity distance of a local inhomogeneity seeded by primordial curvature perturbations of the type predicted by the inflationary scenario and constrained by the cosmic microwave background radiation. We find that a local underdensity originated from a one, two or three standard deviations peaks of the primordial curvature perturbations field can induce corrections to the value of a cosmological constant of the order of $0.6%,1%,1.5%$ respectively. These effects cannot be neglected in the precision cosmology era in which we are entering. Our results can be considered …
We present a novel mechanism to generate the cosmic perturbation from evaporation of primordial black holes. A mass of a field is fluctuated if it is given by a vacuum expectation value of a light scalar field because of the quantum fluctuation during inflation. The fluctuated mass causes variations of the evaporation time of the primordial black holes. Therefore provided the primordial black holes dominate the universe when they evaporate, primordial cosmic perturbations are generated. We find that the amplitude of the large scale curvature perturbation generated in this scenario can be consi…
We investigate the relation between the non-Gaussianities of the primordial perturbations and the sound speed of the tensor perturbations, that is, the propagation speed of the gravitational waves. We find that the sound speed of the tensor perturbations is directly related not to the auto-bispectrum of the tensor perturbations but to the cross-bispectrum of the primordial perturbations, especially, the scalar-tensor-tensor bispectrum. This result is in sharp contrast with the case of the scalar (curvature) perturbations, where their reduced sound speed enhances their auto-bispectrum. Our find…
One of the important light elements created during the big bang nucleosynthesis is Be-7 which then decays to Li-7 by electron capture when recombination becomes effective but well before the Saha equilibrium recombination is reached. This means that Be-7 should wait until its recombination epoch even though the half-life of the hydrogenic beryllium atom is only 106.4 days. We calculate when the conversion from primordial Be-7 to Li-7 occurs taking into account the population of the hyperfine structure sublevels and solving the kinetic equations for recombination, photoionization and conversion…
