Planetary nebulae (PNe) are circumstellar gas ejected during an intense mass-losing phase in the the lives of asymptotic giant branch stars. PNe have a stunning variety of shapes, most of which are not spherically symmetric. The debate over what makes and shapes the circumstellar gas of these evolved, intermediate mass stars has raged for two decades. Today the community is reaching a consensus that single stars cannot trivially manufacture PNe and impart to them non spherical shapes and that a binary companion, possibly even a sub-stellar one, might be needed in a majority of cases. This theoretical conjecture has however not been tested observationally. In this review we discuss the problem both from the theoretical and observational standpoints, explaining the obstacles that stand in the way of a clean observational test and ways to ameliorate the situation. We also discuss indirect tests of this hypothesis and its implications for stellar and galactic astrophysics.
We conduct three dimensional hydrodynamical numerical simulations of planetary nebula (PN) shaping and show that jets that precede the ejection of the main PN shell can form the morphological feature of ears. Ears are two opposite protrusions from the main nebula that are smaller than the main nebula and with a cross section that decreases monotonically from the base of an ear at the shell to its far end. Only a very small fraction of PNe has ears. The short-lived jets, about a year in the present simulations, interact with the regular asymptotic giant branch (AGB) wind to form the ears, while…
Close binary interactions perform a key role in the formation and shaping of planetary nebulae. However only a small fraction of Galactic planetary nebulae are known to host close binary systems. Many such systems are detectable through photometric variability. We searched recently published epoch photometry data from Gaia DR3 for planetary nebula central stars with periodic photometric variability indicative of binarity, uncovering four previously unknown close binaries.
Born-again planetary nebulae (PNe) are extremely rare cases in the evolution of solar-like stars. It is commonly accepted that their central stars (CSPN) experienced a very late thermal pulse (VLTP), ejecting H-deficient material inside the evolved H-rich PN. Given the short duration of this event and the fast subsequent evolution of the CSPN, details of the mass ejection are unknown. We present the first morpho-kinematic model of the H-deficient material surrounding a born-again PN, namely A30. New San Pedro Mártir observations with the Manchester Echelle Spectrograph were recently obtained t…
The iconic planetary nebula (PN) NGC 7027 is bright, nearby (D ~ 1 kpc), highly ionized, intricately structured, and well observed. This nebula is hence an ideal case study for understanding PN shaping and evolution processes. Accordingly, we have conducted a comprehensive imaging survey of NGC 7027 comprised of twelve HST Wide Field Camera 3 images in narrow-band and continuum filters spanning the wavelength range 0.243--1.67 microns. The resulting panchromatic image suite reveals the spatial distributions of emission lines covering low-ionization species such as singly ionized Fe, N, and Si,…

OB stars powering stellar bowshock nebulae (SBNe) have been presumed to have large peculiar velocities. We measured peculiar velocities of SBN central stars to assess their kinematics relative to the general O star population using $Gaia$ EDR3 data for 267 SBN central stars and a sample of 455 Galactic O stars to derive projected velocities $v_{\rm 2D}$. For a subset of each sample we obtained new optical spectroscopy to measure radial velocities and identify multiple-star systems. We find a minimum multiplicity fraction of 36$\pm$6% among SBN central stars, consistent with $>$28% among runawa…
We investigated the physical and chemical properties of the gas and dust components in a carbon-rich planetary nebula (PN) IC2165 using two-dimensional (2-D) emission-line maps with superior resolution. The extinction map is generated in a self-consistent and assumption-free manner. The circumstellar gas-to-dust mass ratio (GDR) map ranges radially from 1210 in the central nebula filled with hot gas plasma to 120 near the ionisation front. The determined GDR is comparable to ~400, which is commonly adopted for carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, and ~100 for ISM. Except for the in…
One of the major puzzles in the study of stellar evolution is the formation process of bipolar and multi-polar planetary nebulae. There is growing consensus that collimated jets create cavities with dense walls in the slowly-expanding (10--20 ~km~s$^{-1}$) envelope ejected in previous evolutionary phases, leading to the observed morphologies. However, the launching of the jet and the way it interacts with the circumstellar material to create such asymmetric morphologies have remained poorly known. Here we present for the first time CO emission from the asymptotic giant branch star W43A that tr…
We use the stellar evolution code MESA-binary and follow the evolution of three exoplanets and two brown dwarfs (BDs) to determine their potential role in the future evolution of their parent star on the red giant branch (RGB) and on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). We limit this study to exoplanets and BDs with orbits that have semi-major axis of 1AU<a0<20AU, a high eccentricity, e0>0.25, and having a parent star of mass M>1Mo. We find that the star HIP 75458 will engulf its planet HIP 75458 b during its RGB phase. The planet will remove the envelope and terminate the RGB evolution, leaving…

(abridged) The role of magnetic field in the shaping of Planetary Nebulae (PNe), either directly or indirectly after being enhanced by binary interaction, has long been a topic of debate. Large scale magnetic fields around pre-PNe have been inferred from polarisation observations of masers. However, because masers probe very specific regions, it is still unclear if the maser results are representative of the intrinsic magnetic field in the circumstellar envelope (CSE). Molecular line polarisation can provide important information about the magnetic field. A comparison between the field morphol…
