The crystallographic structure of CdSe nanoparticles attached to carbon nanotubes has been elucidated by means of high resolution transmission electron microscopy and high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy tomography. CdSe rod-like nanoparticles, grown in solution together with carbon nanotubes, undergo a morphological transformation and become attached to the carbon surface. Electron tomography reveals that the nanoparticles are hexagonal-based with the (001) planes epitaxially matched to the outer graphene layer.
Insights to the mechanism of CdSe nanoparticle attachment to carbon nanotubes following the hot injection method are discussed. It was observed that the presence of water improves the nanotube coverage while Cl containing media are responsible for the shape transformation of the nanoparticles and further attachment to the carbon lattice. The experiments also show that the mechanism taking place involves the right balance of several factors, namely, low passivated nanoparticle surface, particles with well-defined crystallographic facets, and interaction with an organics-free sp2 carbon lattice.…
Novel applications in nanotechnology rely on the design of tailored nano-architectures. For this purpose, carbon nanotubes and nanoparticles are intensively investigated. In this work we study the influence of non-functionalized carbon nanotubes on the synthesis of CdSe nanoparticles by means of organometallic colloidal routes. This new synthesis methodology does not only provide an effective path to attach nanoparticles non-covalently to carbon nanotubes but represents also a new way to control the shape of nanoparticles.
There is a strong interest to attach nanoparticles non-covalently to one-dimensional systems like boron nitride nanotubes to form composites. The combination of those materials might be used for catalysis, in solar cells, or for water splitting. Additionally, the fundamental aspect of charge transfer between the components can be studied in such systems. We report on the synthesis and characterization of nanocomposites based on semiconductor nanoparticles attached directly and non-covalently to boron nitride nanotubes. Boron nitride nanotubes were simply integrated into the colloidal synthesis…
The attachment of semiconducting nanoparticles to carbon nanotubes is one of the most challenging subjects in nanotechnology. Successful high coverage attachment and control over the charge transfer mechanism and photo-current generation opens a wide field of new applications such as highly effective solar cells and fibre-enhanced polymers. In this work we study the charge transfer in individual double-wall carbon nanotubes highly covered with uniform ZnO nanoparticles. The synthetic colloidal procedure was chosen to avoid long-chained ligands at the nanoparticle-nanotube interface. The result…
The functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with luminescent sp$^{3}$ defects has greatly improved their performance in applications such as quantum light sources and bioimaging. Here, we report the covalent functionalization of purified semiconducting SWCNTs with stable organic radicals (perchlorotriphenylmethyl, PTM) carrying a net spin. This model system allows us to use the near-infrared photoluminescence arising from the defect-localized exciton as a highly sensitive probe for the short-range interaction between the PTM radical and the SWCNT. Our results point toward …
The formation of monodisperse, tunable sized, alloyed nanoparticles of Ni, Co, or Fe with Pt and pure Pt nanoparticles attached to carbon nanotubes has been investigated. Following homogeneous nucleation, nanoparticles attach directly to non-functionalized singlewall and multiwall carbon nanotubes during nanoparticle synthesis as a function of ligand nature and the nanoparticle work function. These ligands do not only provide a way to tune the chemical composition, size and shape of the nanoparticles but also control a strong reversible interaction with carbon nanotubes and permit controlling …
CdSe quantum dots (QDs) with different organic linker molecules are attached to ZnO nanowires (NWs) to study the luminescence dynamics and the electron tunneling from the QDs to the nanowires in time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) and photoconductivity measurements. The PL transients of the QD luminescence indicate two different recombination channels: the direct recombination inside the QD core and the recombination via QD surface defect states. After linking the QDs to the ZnO NW surface, photo-induced electron tunneling from an excited state of the QD into the conduction band of the nanowi…
We present a detailed study of the geometry, structure and energetics of carbon nanotube caps. We show that the structure of a cap uniquely determines the chirality of the nanotube that can be attached to it. The structure of the cap is specified in a geometrical way by defining the position of six pentagons on a hexagonal lattice. Moving one (or more) pentagons systematically creates caps for other nanotube chiralities. For the example of the (10,0) tube we study the formation energy of different nanotube caps using ab-initio calculations. The caps with isolated pentagons have an average form…
The design of efficient electrocatalysts for electrochemical water splitting with minimal amount of precious metal is crucial to attain renewable and sustainable energy conversion. Here, we report the use of a network of CdSe branched colloidal nanocrystals, made of a CdSe core and eight CdSe pods (so-called octapods), able to host on their pods Pt particles, and thus catalyzing water splitting reactions. Thanks to the octapod shape, the resulting Pt-hosting network is mechanically trapped onto carbon nanotube buckypaper, providing mechanically flexible and binder-free electrodes. We found tha…
In order to accommodate an increasing demand for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with desirable characteristics one has to understand the origin of helicity of their structures. Here, through in situ microscopy we demonstrate that the nucleation of a carbon nanotube is initiated by the formation of the carbon cap. Nucleation begins with the formation of a graphene embryo that is bound between opposite step-edges on the nickel catalyst surface. The embryo grows larger as the step-edges migrate along the surface, leading to the formation of a curved carbon cap when the steps flow across the edges of adj…
We demonstrate the procedure of Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) conductive probe fabrication with a single multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) on a silicon cantilever pyramid. The nanotube bundle reliably attached to the metal-covered pyramid is formed using electrophoresis technique from the MWNT suspension. It is shown that the dimpled aluminium sample can be used both for shortening/modification of the nanotube bundle by applying pulse voltage between the probe and the sample, and for controlling the probe shape via Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) imaging the sample. It allows to fabricate a …
Analytic results for the conductance of a molecular wire attached to mesoscopic tubule leads are obtained. They permit to study linear transport in presence of low dimensional leads in the whole range of parameters. In particular contact effects can be addressed in detail. By focusing on the specificity of the lead-wire contact, we show that the geometry of this hybrid system supports a mechanism of channel selection, which is a distinctive hallmark of the mesoscopic nature of the electrodes.
Highly active, durable and cost-effective electrocatalysts for water oxidation to evolve oxygen gas hold a key to a range of renewable energy solutions including water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Here, we report the synthesis of ultrathin nickel iron layered double hydroxide nanoplates on mildly oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Incorporation of Fe into the nickel hydroxide induced the formation of NiFe-layered double hydroxide. The nanoplates were covalently attached to a network of nanotubes, affording excellent electrical wiring to the nanoplates. The ultra-thin Ni…
We report the functionalization of carbon nanotubes with two azobenzene-based chromophores with large internal dipole moments and opposite dipole orientations. The molecules are attached to the nanotubes non-covalently via a pyrene tether. A combination of characterization techniques shows uniform molecular coverage on the nanotubes, with minimal aggregation of excess chromophores on the substrate. The large on/off ratios and the sub-threshold swings of the nanotube-based field-effect transistors (FETs) are preserved after functionalization, and different shifts in threshold voltage are observ…
We have investigated the effects of the interfacial bond arrangement on the electronic transport features of metal-nanotube-metal systems. The transport properties of finite, defect-free armchair and zigzag single-walled carbon nanotubes attached to Au(111) metallic contacts have been calculated by means of the non-equilibrium Green functional formalism with the Tight-Binding and the Extended Huckel Hamiltonians. Our calculations show that the electrode material is not the only factor which rules contact transparency. Indeed, for the same electrode, but changing nanotube helicities, we have ob…
We study the effects of covalent functionalization of single wall carbon nanotubes (CNT) on their elastic properties. We consider simple organic molecules -NH, -NH2, -CH2, -CH3, -OH attached to CNTs' surface at various densities. The studies are based on the first principles calculations in the framework of density functional theory. We have determined the changes in the geometry and the elastic moduli of the functionalized CNTs as a function of the density of adsorbed molecules. It turns out that elastic moduli diminish with increasing concentration of adsorbands, however, the functionalized …
The controlled functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes with luminescent sp3-defects has created the potential to employ them as quantum-light sources in the near-infrared. For that, it is crucial to control their spectral diversity. The emission wavelength is determined by the binding configuration of the defects rather than the molecular structure of the attached groups. However, current functionalization methods produce a variety of binding configurations and thus emission wavelengths. We introduce a simple reaction protocol for the creation of only one type of luminescent defect…
We show that single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) decorated with sugar functionalized poly (propyl ether imine) (PETIM) dendrimer is a very sensitive platform to quantitatively detect carbohydrate recognizing proteins, namely, lectins. The changes in electrical conductivity of SWNT in field effect transistor device due to carbohydrate - protein interactions form the basis of present study. The mannose sugar attached PETIM dendrimers undergo charge - transfer interactions with the SWNT. The changes in the conductance of the dendritic sugar functionalized SWNT after addition of lectins in varyi…
A detailed understanding of energy transduction is crucial for achieving precise control of energy flow in complex, integrated systems. In this context, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are intriguing model systems due to their rich, chirality-dependent electronic and optical properties. Here, we study the quenching of fluorescence from isolated quantum dots (QDs) upon approach of individual CNTs attached to atomic force microscope probes. Precision measurements of many different CNT/QD pairs reveal behavior consistent with resonant energy transfer between QD and CNT excitons via a Fohrster-like dipole…
Although individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are superior as constituents to polymer chains, the mechanical and thermal properties of CNT fibers (CNTFs) remain inferior to commercial synthetic fibers due to the lack of synthesis methods to embed CNTs effectively in superstructures. The application of conventional techniques for mechanical enhancement resulted in a mild improvement of target properties while achieving parity at best on others. In this work, a Double-Drawing technique is developed to deform continuously grown CNTFs and rearrange the constituent CNTs in both mesoscale and nanoscal…
