Recently, it has been reported that as one goes from oxygen to fluorine, just the addition of one more proton, provides extraordinary stability to fluorine which can bind six more neutrons beyond what oxygen can. It is shown here that this surprising stability can be understood if neutron rich nuclei, $^{24}O$ and $^{27}F$ are treated as bound states of eight and nine-tritons respectively. Also the recently discovered $^{42}Si$ is predicted to have a bound state structure of fourteen tritons.
We present a summary of the recent results obtained with the novel hadron resonance gas model with the multicomponent hard-core repulsion which is extended to describe the mixtures of hadrons and light (anti-, hyper-)nuclei. A very accurate description is obtained for the hadronic and the light nuclei data measured by STAR at the collision energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =200$ GeV and by ALICE at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =2.76$ TeV. The most striking result discussed here is that for the most probable chemical freeze-out scenario for the STAR energy the found parameters allow us to reproduce the values of the exp…
We apply the effective field theory approach to the three-nucleon system. In particular, we consider S=1/2 neutron-deuteron scattering and the triton. We show that in this channel a unique nonperturbative renormalization takes place which requires the introduction of a single three-body force at leading order. With one fitted parameter we find a good description of low-energy data. Invariance under the renormalization group explains some universal features of the three-nucleon system ---such as the Thomas and Efimov effects and the Phillips line--- and the origin of SU(4) symmetry in nuclei.
The idea of treating the trinucleon systems as elementary entities in the elementary particle model (EPM) as an Effective Field Theory has been a success in explaining the weak charge-changing processes in nuclei. The EPM results are found to be as good as those obtained from nuclear microscopic models using two- and three-body forces. We extend this concept to investigate the validity of the elemental nature of $A=3$ nuclei through studies of nuclear structure of neutron-rich nuclei. By treating neutron-rich nuclei as primarily made up of tritons as its building blocks, we extract one- and tw…
Based on the framework of the Isospin-Dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics (IQMD) model in which the initial neutron and proton densities are sampled according to the droplet model, the correlation between triton-to-$^{3}$He yield ratio (R(t/$^{3}$He)$=$Yield(t)/Yield($^{3}$He)) and neutron skin thickness ($δ_{np}$) in neutron-rich projectile induced reactions is investigated. By changing the diffuseness parameter of neutron density distribution in the droplet model for the projectile to obtain different $δ_{np}$, the relationship between $δ_{np}$ and the corresponding R(t/$^{3}$He) in semi-pe…
The method of group theory is applied to investigate the ground and the excited states of the triton and helium nuclei by using the translation invariant shell model with basis functions corresponding to even number of quanta of excitations in the range 0 less than or equal to N less than or equal to 20. Accordingly, the ground and first excited state wave functions and energies, the S, P and D state probabilities, the root mean square radius and the magnetic dipole moment of triton have been investigated. Also, the energies and wave functions of the ground and the even parity excited states a…
Our model, based on Quantum Chromodynamics, emphasizes the role of triton clustering in nuclei. As there is good empirical support of triton clustering in nuclei, we may even treat this as a good phenomenological working hypothesis as well. Here we show how our model finds remarkable success in being able to provide a consistent and interconnected understanding of such diverse empirical realities as the missing electric-charge in quasielastic electron scattering, and simultaneously, also the puzzling data within the studies of exotic nuclei. This gives us confidence, that our model should be t…
An effective field theory is used to describe light nuclei, calculated from quantum chromodynamics on a lattice at unphysically large pion masses. The theory is calibrated at leading order to two available data sets on two- and three-body nuclei for two pion masses. At those pion masses we predict the quartet and doublet neutron-deuteron scattering lengths, and the alpha-particle binding energy. For $m_π=510~$MeV we obtain, respectively, $^4a_{\rm nD}=2.3\pm 1.3~$fm, $^2a_{\rm nD}=2.2\pm 2.1~$fm, and $B_α^{}=35\pm 22~$MeV, while for $m_π=805~$MeV $^4a_{\rm nD}=1.6\pm 1.3~$fm, $^2a_{\rm nD}=0.6…
Alpha clustering in nuclei, at present is a well studied and reasonably well accepted property of the nucleus. Less well appreciated and more ambiguous is the role of A=3 clustering, i.e. helion and triton, in nuclei. Here we try to place A=3 clustering in nuclei into its proper perspective, first by pointing out strong experimental evidences which indicate its clear presence in nuclei and secondly showing as to how to include these A=3 clusters in a proper and consistent theoretical understanding of the nuclear phenomenon.
Coupling of cluster and deformed structures are important for dynamics of nuclear structure. Threshold energy has been discussed to explain cluster structures coupling to deformed states but relation between threshold energy and excitation energy has open problems. Negative-parity superdeformed (SD) states were observed by a $γ$-spectroscopy experiment in $^{35}$Cl but its detailed structure is unclear. By analyzing coupling of cluster structures in deformed states and high-lying cluster states in $^{35}$Cl, cluster structures coupling to deformed states and excitation energy of high-lying clu…
We study the transverse momentum spectra of light nuclei (deuteron, anti-deuteron and triton) produced in Gold-Gold (Au-Au) collisions in different centrality bins by the blast wave model with Tsallis statistics. The model results are in agreement with the experimental data measured by STAR Collaboration in special transverse momentum ranges. We extracted the kinetic freezeout temperature, transverse flow velocity and kinetic freezeout volume. It is observed that kinetic freezeout temperature and transverse flow velocity increases initially, and then saturates from 14.5-39 GeV, while the kinet…
Light (anti-)nuclei in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are considered to be formed by the coalescence mechanism of (anti-)nucleons in the present work. Using a dynamical phase-space coalescence model coupled with a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model, we explore the formation of light clusters such as deuteron, triton and their anti-particles in different centralities for $^{197}$Au + $^{197}$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 39$ GeV. The calculated transverse momentum spectra of protons, deuterons, and tritons are comparable to those of experimental data from the RHIC-STAR collaboration. Bot…
We calculate the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the nuclei $^7$Li and $^{11}$B in the cluster model with $α$ ($^4$He) and triton ($^3$H) clusters as degrees of freedom. The $^7$Li and $^{11}$B nuclei are treated in the two- and three-body problem, respectively, using the Gaussian expansion method, assuming the one-meson exchange P, CP-odd nuclear forces. We find that $^7$Li and $^{11}$B have larger sensitivity to the CP violation than the deuteron. It is also suggested that the EDMs of $^7$Li and $^{11}$B, together with those of $^6$Li, $^9$Be and the $1/2^+_1$ excited state of $^{13}$C, obey…
We find the threshold structure of the two- and three-nucleon systems, with the deuteron and 3H/3He as the only bound nuclei, sufficient to predict a pair of four-nucleon states: a deeply bound state which is identified with the helium-4 ground state, and a shallow, unstable state at an energy 0.38(25) MeV above the triton-proton threshold which is consistent with data on the first excited state of helium-4. The analysis employs the framework of Pionless EFT at leading order with a generalized regulator prescription which probes renormalization-group invariance of the two states with respect t…
We present the results of lattice QCD calculations of the magnetic moments of the lightest nuclei, the deuteron, the triton and ${}^3$He, along with those of the neutron and proton. These calculations, performed at quark masses corresponding to $m_π\sim 800$ MeV, reveal that the structure of these nuclei at unphysically heavy quark masses closely resembles that at the physical quark masses. In particular, we find that the magnetic moment of ${}^3$He differs only slightly from that of a free neutron, as is the case in nature, indicating that the shell-model configuration of two spin-paired prot…
The nuclear equation of state is explored with the constrained HFB approach for self conjugate nuclei. It is found that beyond a certain low, more or less universal density, those nuclei spontaneously cluster into A/4 alpha particles with A the nucleon number. The energy at the threshold density increases linearly with the number of alpha particles as does the experimental threshold energy. Taking off the spurious c.o.m. energy of each alpha particle almost gives agreement between theory and experiment. The implications of these results with respect to alpha clustering and the nuclear EOS at l…

According to microscopic calculations with antisymmetrized molecular dynamics, we studied cluster features in stable and unstable nuclei. A variety of structure was found in stable and unstable nuclei in the $p$-shell and $sd$-shell regions. The structure of excited states of $^{12}$Be was investigated, while in $sd$-shell nuclei we focused on molecular states and deformed states. The deformed states in $^{28}$Si and $^{40}$Ca were discussed in connection with the high-lying molecular states. Appealing molecular states in $^{36}$Ar and $^{24}$Mg were suggested. The results signified that both …
We investigate the localization and clustering features in $^{20}$Ne ($N=Z$) and neutron-rich $^{32}$Ne nuclei at zero and finite temperatures. The finite temperature Hartree-Bogoliubov theory is used with the relativistic density-dependent meson-nucleon coupling functional DD-ME2. It is shown that clustering features gradually weaken with increasing temperature and disappear when the shape phase transition occurs. Considering thermal fluctuations in the density profiles, the clustering features vanish at lower temperatures, compared to the case without thermal fluctuations. The effect of the …
We present a review of recent works on clustering phenomena in unstable nuclei studied by antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD). The AMD studies in these decades have uncovered novel types of clustering phenomena brought about by the excess neutrons. Among them, this review focuses on the molecule-like structure of unstable nuclei. One of the earliest discussions on the clustering in unstable nuclei was made for neutron-rich Be and B isotopes. AMD calculations predicted that the ground state clustering is enhanced or reduced depending on the number of excess neutrons. Today, the experiments…
Starting with a quark model of nucleon structure in which the valence quarks are strongly correlated within a nucleon, the light nuclei are constructed by assuming similar correlations of the quarks of neighboring nucleons. Applying the model to larger collections of nucleons reveals the emergence of the face-centered cubic (FCC) symmetry at the nuclear level. Nuclei with closed shells possess octahedral symmetry. Binding of nucleons are provided by quark loops formed by three and four nucleon correlations. Quark loops are responsible for formation of exotic (borromean) nuclei, as well. The mo…
Structures of $p$- and $sd$-shell nuclei are studied with the deformed-basis antisymmetrized molecular dynamics method using the Gogny D1S and Skyrme SLy7 forces as effective interactions. By the energy variation with a constraint, energy curves as functions of quadrupole deformation parameter $β$ are obtained. The energy curves for $sd$-shell nuclei show structure change as a function of $β$, and suggest shape coexistence. Nuclear structures in the deformed region are discussed focusing on deformations and clustering. It is found that the deformations often involve cluster structures. Effecti…
It is shown that the hole in the centre of $ ^{3}H $, $ ^{3}He $ and $ ^{4}He $, the neutron halos in nuclei, the $ α- $ and other clustering effects in nuclei and the nuclear molecules all basically arise due to the same underlying effect. We shall show that all these ground state properties of nuclei are manifestations of quark effects. The role of triton clustering in very neutron rich nuclei is emphasized. All these require the concept of hidden colour states which arise from confinement ideas of QCD for the multi-quark systems. This provides comprehensive understanding of diverse nuclear …
We present a phenomenological theory of nuclei that incorporates clustering at the nuclear surface in a general form. The theory explains the recently extracted large symmetry energy by Natowitz et al. at low densities of nuclear matter and is fully consistent with the static properties of nuclei. In phenomenological way clusters of all sizes, shapes along with medium modifications are included. Symmetric nuclear matter properties are discussed in detail. Arguments are given that lead to an equation of state of nuclear matter consistent with clustering in the low density region. We also discus…
Using the framework of nuclear energy density functionals we examine the conditions for single-nucleon localization and formation of cluster structures in finite nuclei. We propose to characterize localization by the ratio of the dispersion of single-nucleon wave functions to the average inter-nucleon distance. This parameter generally increases with mass and describes the gradual transition from a hybrid phase in light nuclei, characterized by the spatial localization of individual nucleon states that leads to the formation of cluster structures, toward the Fermi liquid phase in heavier nucle…
A new symplectic-based shell-model approach to clustering in atomic nuclei is proposed by considering the simple system $^{20}$Ne. Its relation to the collective excitations of this system is mentioned as well. The construction of the Pauli allowed Hilbert space of the cluster states with maximal permutational symmetry is given for the $^{16}$O+$^{4}$He $\rightarrow$ $^{20}$Ne channel in the case of one-component many-particle nuclear system. The equivalence of the obtained cluster model space to that of the semi-microscopic algebraic cluster model is demonstrated.
We study the clustering structure and the internal or sub-structure of clusters in $^{112-122}$Ba nuclei within the framework of relativistic mean field theory in an axially deformed cylindrical co-ordinate. We calculate the total density distribution, and the individual neutrons and protons density distributions. From the analysis of the clustering confugurations of the density distributions of various shapes, we find different sub-structures inside the Ba nuclei considered here. The important step, carried out for the first time, is the counting of number of protons and neutrons present in t…
We explore possible observable signatures of $α$ clustering of light nuclei in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions involving ${}^{7,9}$Be, ${}^{12}$C, and ${}^{16}$O. The clustering leads to specific spatial correlations of the nucleon distributions in the ground state, which are manifest in the earliest stage of the ultra-high energy reaction. The formed initial state of the fireball is sensitive to these correlations, and the effect influences, after the collective evolution of the system, the hadron production in the final stage. Specifically, we study effects on the harmonic flow in coll…
What is the origin of nuclear clustering and how does it emerge from the nuclear interaction? While there is ample experimental evidence for this phenomenon, its theoretical characterization directly from nucleons as degrees of freedom remains a challenge, making it difficult to improve nuclear forces using clustering observables. In this work, a simple ratio of energies based on effective scale arguments is proposed to assess the quality of nuclear forces on alpha clustering (${ {}^{4}\text{He} }$) in bound and narrow ground-state nuclei. The proposed clustering ratio is parameter-free and co…
Nucleonic matter displays a quantum liquid structure, but in some cases finite nuclei behave like molecules composed of clusters of protons and neutrons. Clustering is a recurrent feature in light nuclei, from beryllium to nickel. For instance, in $^{12}$C the Hoyle state, crucial for stellar nucleosynthesis, can be described as a nuclear molecule consisting of three alpha-particles. The mechanism of cluster formation, however, has not yet been fully understood. We show that the origin of clustering can be traced back to the depth of the confining nuclear potential. By employing the theoretica…
We discuss emulators from the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell-model framework for studying the formation of alpha clustering and collective properties without effective charges. We present a new type of an emulator, one that utilizes the eigenvector continuation technique but is based on the use of symplectic symmetry considerations. This is achieved by using physically relevant degrees of freedom, namely, the symmetry-adapted basis, which exploits the almost perfect symplectic symmetry in nuclei. Specifically, we study excitation energies, point-proton root-mean-square radii, along w…

One of the outstanding problems in modern nuclear physics is to determine the properties of nuclei from the fundamental theory of the strong force, quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Skyrmions offer a novel approach to this problem by considering nuclei as solitons of a low energy effective field theory obtained from QCD. Unfortunately, the standard theory of Skyrmions has been plagued by two significant problems, in that it yields nuclear binding energies that are an order of magnitude larger than experimental nuclear data, and it predicts intrinsic shapes for nuclei that fail to match the cluster…
A systematic analysis of the $α$ + core structure is performed in the ground state bands of even-even nuclei of the $22 \leq Z \leq 42$ region in terms of the Local Potential Model. The $α$ + core interaction is described by the nuclear potential of (1 + Gaussian)$\times$(W.S. + W.S.$^3$) shape with 2 free parameters. Properties such as energy levels, reduced $α$-widths, $B(E2)$ transition rates and rms charge radii are calculated and compared with experimental data. A good agreement with the experimental data is obtained in general, even for the nuclei without the $α$ + {doubly closed shell c…
The nucleonic localization function has been used for a decade to study the formation of alpha-particles in nuclei, by providing a measure of having nucleons of a given spin in a single place. However, differences in interpretation remain, compared to the nucleonic density of the nucleus. In order to better understand the respective role of the nucleonic localization function and the densities in the alpha-particle formation in cluster states or in alpha-decay mechanism, both an analytic approximation and microscopic calculations, using energy density functionals, are undertaken. The nucleonic…

The theory explains the recently extracted large symmetry energy at low densities of nuclear matter and is consistent with the static properties of nuclei. In phenomenological way clusters of all sizes, shapes along with medium modifications are included. The importance of quartic term in symmetry energy is demonstrated at and below the equilibrium density in nuclear matter. It is shown that it is related both to clustering as well as to the contribution of three-nucleon inter…

We argue that many features of the structure of nuclei emerge from a strictly perturbative expansion around the unitarity limit, where the two-nucleon S waves have bound states at zero energy. In this limit, the gross features of states in the nuclear chart are correlated to only one dimensionful parameter, which is related to the breaking of scale invariance to a discrete scaling symmetry and set by the triton binding energy. Observables are moved to their physical values by small, perturbative corrections, much like in descriptions of the fine structure of atomic spectra. We provide evidence…
We investigate the magnetic dipole moments in even-even self-conjugate nuclei from ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}$ to ${}^{44}\mathrm{Ti}$. For the latter, the measured gyromagnetic factors of excited states turn out to assume the same value of $g \approx + 0.5$ within statistical errors. This peculiar feature can be interpreted on the basis of collective excitations of $α$-clusters. Analogously, the behaviour of the same observable is studied for all isotopes obtained by adding one or two neutrons to the considered self-conjugate nuclei. It is found that for the $N = Z + 1$ isotopes the $α$-cluster struc…
Nuclear density functional theory (DFT) is the tool of choice in describing properties of complex nuclei and intricate phases of bulk nucleonic matter. It is a microscopic approach based on an energy density functional representing the nuclear interaction. An attractive feature of nuclear DFT is that it can be applied to both finite nuclei and pasta phases appearing in the inner crust of neutron stars. While nuclear pasta clusters in a neutron star can be easily characterized through their density distributions, the level of clustering of nucleons in a nucleus can often be difficult to assess.…
Quartetting ($α$-like clustering) occurs in low density matter ($\le 0.03$ fm$^{-3}$) which exists, e.g., at the surface of nuclei. It is of interest for the $α$ preformation to calculate the $α$ decay of heavy nuclei such as $^{212}$Po, but also in light nuclei (e.g., $^{20}$Ne) which shows strong signatures of quartetting. We analyze the intrinsic structure of the $α$-like cluster and the center of mass motion of the quartet, in particular the role of Pauli blocking. The Thomas-Fermi model for the (daughter) core nucleus is improved introducing quasiparticle nucleon states. Calculations perf…
Starting from experimental studies on alpha-clustering in excited self-conjugate nuclei (from $^{16}$O to $^{28}$Si), temperature and density conditions for such a clustering are determined. Measured temperatures have been found in the range of 5.5 - 6.0 MeV whereas density values of 0.3 - 0.4 times the saturation density are deduced, i.e., 0.046 to 0.062 $fm^{-3}$. Such a density domain is also predicted by constrained self-consistent mean field calculations. These results constitute a benchmark for alpha clustering from self-conjugate nuclei in relation to descriptions of stellar evolution a…
The clustering of nucleons in nuclei is a widespread but elusive phenomenon for study. Here, we wish to highlight the variety of theoretical approaches, and demonstrate how they are mutually supportive and complementary. On the experimental side, we describe recent advances in the study of the classic cluster nucleus 24Mg. Also, recent studies of clustering in nuclei approaching the neutron drip line are described. In the region near N/Z=2, both theory and experiment now suggest that multi-centre cluster structure is important, in particular for the very neutron rich beryllium isotopes.
In this paper we examine to what extent traces of alpha-clustering can be found in mean-field ground states of $nα$-nuclei from Be8 through Ar36 as well as in some superdeformed states in S32, Ar36, and Ca40. For this purpose we calculate the overlap of the mean-field Slater determinant with one containg pure Gaussians and perfect spin and isospin symmetry, optimizing the overlap by varying the alpha-particle positions and radii. In some cases a coherent sum over different configurations is also employed. We find quite large overlaps for some of the lighter systems that diminish for nuclei abo…

It is noted that in single j-shell calculations certain odd-spin states in even--even nuclei lie in a narrow energy band; likewise certain states in odd--odd nuclei.
Clustering plays an important role in the structure of nuclei, especially for light nuclei in the $p$-shell. In nuclear cluster models these degrees of freedom are introduced explicitly. In the Resonating Group Method or in the Generator Coordinate Method the clusters are built from individual nucleons interacting via an effective nucleon-nucleon interaction; the total wave function is antisymmetrized. Fermionic Molecular Dynamics (FMD) goes beyond pure cluster models. It is a microscopic many-body approach using a Gaussian wave packet basis that includes the harmonic oscillator shell model an…
We present a detailed discussion of the structure of the low-lying positive-parity energy spectrum of $^{12}$C from a no-core shell-model perspective. The approach utilizes a fraction of the usual shell-model space and extends its multi-shell reach via the symmetry-based no-core symplectic shell model (NCSpM) with a simple, physically-informed effective interaction. We focus on the ground-state rotational band, the Hoyle state and its $2^+$ and $4^+$ excitations, as well as the giant monopole $0^+$ resonance, which is a vibrational breathing mode of the ground state. This, in turn, allows us t…
Photon-nuclear reaction in a transport model frame, namely an Extended Quantum Molecular Dynamics (EQMD) model, has been realised at the photon energy of 70-140 MeV in the quasi-deuteron (QD) regime. For an important application, we pay a special focus on photonuclear reactions of $^{12}$C($γ$,np)$^{10}$B where $^{12}$C is considered as different configurations including $α$-clustering. Obvious differences for some observables have been observed among different configurations, which can be attributed to spatial-momentum correlation of a neutron-proton pair inside nucleus, and therefore it give…
The relation of quarteting and clustering in atomic nuclei is discussed based on symmetry-considerations. This connection enables us to predict a complete high-energy cluster spectrum from the description of the low-energy quartet part. As an example the $^{28}$Si nucleus is considered, including its well-established ground-state region, the recently proposed superdeformed band, and the high-lying molecular resonances.
We review recent experimental and theoretical progress in understanding the microscopic details of clustering in light nuclei. Nuclear alpha-clustering has been the subject of intense study since the advent of heavy-ion accelerators. Looking back for more than 40 years we are able today to see the connection between quasimolecular resonances in heavy-ion collisions and extremely deformed states in light nuclei. For example superdeformed bands have been recently discovered in light N=Z nuclei such as $^{36}$Ar, $^{40}$Ca, $^{48}$Cr, and $^{56}$Ni by $γ$-ray spectroscopy. The search for strongly deformed shapes in N=Z nuclei is also the domain of charged-particle spectroscopy, and our experimental group at IReS Strasbou…
We discuss the role of clustering on monopole, dipole, and quadrupole excitations in nuclei in the framework of the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell model (SA-NCSM). The SA-NCSM starts from nucleon-nucleon potentials and, by exploring symmetries known to dominate the nuclear dynamics, can reach nuclei up through the calcium region by accommodating ultra-large model spaces critical to descriptions of clustering and collectivity. The results are based on calculations of electromagnetic sum rules and discretized responses using the Lanczos algorithm, that can be used to determine response…
