Several non-asymptotic formulas are established in channel resolvability and identification capacity, and they are applied to wire-tap channel. By using these formulas, the $ε$ capacities of the above three problems are considered in the most general setting, where no structural assumptions such as the stationary memoryless property are made on a channel. As a result, we solve an open problem proposed in Han & Verdu and Han. Moreover, we obtain lower bounds of the exponents of error probability and the wire-tapper's information in wire-tap channel.
A polar coding scheme is introduced in this paper for the wire-tap channel. It is shown that the provided scheme achieves the entire rate-equivocation region for the case of symmetric and degraded wire-tap channel, where the weak notion of secrecy is assumed. For the particular case of binary erasure wire-tap channel, an alternative proof is given. The case of general non-degraded wire-tap channels is also considered.
We derive an exponentially decaying upper-bound on the unnormalized amount of information leaked to the wire-tapper in Wyner's wire-tap channel setting. We characterize the exponent of the bound as a function of the randomness used by the encoder. This exponent matches that of the recent work of Hayashi (2011) which is, to the best of our knowledge, the best exponent that exists in the literature. Our proof---like those of Han et al. (2014) and Hayashi (2015)---is exclusively based on an i.i.d. random coding construction while that of Hayashi (2011), in addition, requires the use of random uni…
We consider two-way wire-tap channels, where two users are communicating with each other in the presence of an eavesdropper, who has access to the communications through a multiple-access channel. We find achievable rates for two different scenarios, the Gaussian two-way wire-tap channel, (GTW-WT), and the binary additive two-way wire-tap channel, (BATW-WT). It is shown that the two-way channels inherently provide a unique advantage for wire-tapped scenarios, as the users know their own transmitted signals and in effect help encrypt the other user's messages, similar to a one-time pad. We comp…
We find the secrecy capacity of the 2-2-1 Gaussian MIMO wire-tap channel, which consists of a transmitter and a receiver with two antennas each, and an eavesdropper with a single antenna. We determine the secrecy capacity of this channel by proposing an achievable scheme and then developing a tight upper bound that meets the proposed achievable secrecy rate. We show that, for this channel, Gaussian signalling in the form of beam-forming is optimal, and no pre-processing of information is necessary.
The fading wire-tap channel is investigated, where the source-to-destination channel and the source-to-wire-tapper channel are corrupted by multiplicative fading gain coefficients in addition to additive Gaussian noise terms. The channel state information is assumed to be known at both the transmitter and the receiver. The parallel wire-tap channel with independent subchannels is first studied, which serves as an information-theoretic model for the fading wire-tap channel. The secrecy capacity of the parallel wire-tap channel is established. This result is then specialized to give the secrecy …
A multiplicative Gaussian wire-tap channel inspired by compressed sensing is studied. Lower and upper bounds on the secrecy capacity are derived, and shown to be relatively tight in the large system limit for a large class of compressed sensing matrices. Surprisingly, it is shown that the secrecy capacity of this channel is nearly equal to the capacity without any secrecy constraint provided that the channel of the eavesdropper is strictly worse than the channel of the intended receiver. In other words, the eavesdropper can see almost everything and yet learn almost nothing. This behavior, whi…
We consider the problem of finding secrecy rate of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wire-tap channel. A transmitter, a legitimate receiver, and an eavesdropper are all equipped with multiple antennas. The channel states from the transmitter to the legitimate user and to the eavesdropper are assumed to be known at the transmitter. In this contribution, we address the problem of finding the optimal precoder/transmit covariance matrix maximizing the secrecy rate of the given wiretap channel. The problem formulation is shown to be equivalent to a difference of convex functions programming p…
The secrecy capacity of a discrete memoryless Gaussian Wire-Tap Channel when the input is from a finite complex constellation is studied. It is shown that the secrecy capacity curves of a finite constellation plotted against the SNR, for a fixed noise variance of the eavesdropper's channel has a global maximum at an internal point. This is in contrast to what is known in the case of Gaussian codebook input where the secrecy capacity curve is a bounded, monotonically increasing function of SNR. Secrecy capacity curves for some well known constellations like BPSK, 4-QAM, 16-QAM and 8-PSK are plo…
We introduce a new protocol for secure two-party computation of linear functions in the semi-honest model, based on coding techniques. We first establish a parallel between the second version of the wire-tap channel model and secure two-party computation. This leads us to our protocol, that combines linear coset coding and oblivious transfer techniques. Our construction requires the use of binary intersecting codes or $q$-ary minimal codes, which are also studied in this paper.
We consider the Gaussian Multiple Access Wire-Tap Channel (GMAC-WT). In this scenario, multiple users communicate with an intended receiver in the presence of an intelligent and informed wire-tapper who receives a degraded version of the signal at the receiver. We define suitable security measures for this multi-access environment. Using codebooks generated randomly according to a Gaussian distribution, achievable secrecy rate regions are identified using superposition coding and TDMA coding schemes. An upper bound for the secrecy sum-rate is derived, and our coding schemes are shown to achiev…
In this paper the fading multiple antenna (MIMO) wire-tap channel is investigated under short term power constraints. The secret diversity gain and the secret multiplexing gain are defined. Using these definitions, the secret diversitymultiplexing tradeoff (DMT) is calculated analytically for no transmitter side channel state information (CSI) and for full CSI. When there is no CSI at the transmitter, under the assumption of Gaussian codebooks, it is shown that the eavesdropper steals both transmitter and receiver antennas, and the secret DMT depends on the remaining degrees of freedom. When C…
We consider the Gaussian Multiple Access Wire-Tap Channel (GMAC-WT). In this scenario, multiple users communicate with an intended receiver in the presence of an intelligent and informed wire-tapper who receives a degraded version of the signal at the receiver. We define a suitable security measure for this multi-access environment. We derive an outer bound for the rate region such that secrecy to some pre-determined degree can be maintained. We also find, using Gaussian codebooks, an achievable such secrecy region. Gaussian codewords are shown to achieve the sum capacity outer bound, and the …
The model of wiretap channel (WTC) is important as it constitutes the essence of physical layer security (PLS). Wiretap channel with noiseless feedback (WTC-NF) is especially interesting as it shows what can be done when a private feedback is available. The already existing secret key based feedback coding scheme focuses on generating key from the feedback and using this key to protect part of the transmitted message. It has been shown that this secret key based feedback coding scheme is only optimal for the degraded WTC-NF, and finding an optimal feedback scheme for the general WTC-NF motivat…
We consider the General Gaussian Multiple Access Wire-Tap Channel (GGMAC-WT). In this scenario, multiple users communicate with an intended receiver in the presence of an intelligent and informed eavesdropper. We define two suitable secrecy measures, termed individual and collective, to reflect the confidence in the system for this multi-access environment. We determine achievable rates such that secrecy to some pre-determined degree can be maintained, using Gaussian codebooks. We also find outer bounds for the case when the eavesdropper receives a degraded version of the intended receiver's s…
In this paper, we investigate power allocation that maximizes the secrecy rate of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems under arbitrarily distributed inputs. Considering commonly assumed Gaussian inputs are unrealistic, we focus on secrecy systems with more practical discrete distributed inputs, such as PSK, QAM, etc. While the secrecy rate achieved by Gaussian distributed inputs is concave with respect to the transmit power, we have found and rigorously proved that the secrecy rate is non-concave under any discrete inputs. Hence, traditional convex optimization methods are…
Recently, Dziembowski et al. introduced the notion of non-malleable codes (NMC), inspired from the notion of non-malleability in cryptography and the work of Gennaro et al. in 2004 on tamper proof security. Informally, when using NMC, if an attacker modifies a codeword, decoding this modified codeword will return either the original message or a completely unrelated value. The definition of NMC is related to a family of modifications authorized to the attacker. In their paper, Dziembowski et al. propose a construction valid for the family of all bit-wise independent functions. In this article,…
This paper considers a single-antenna wirelesspowered communication network (WPCN) over a flat-fading channel. We show that, by using our probabilistic harvestand-transmit (PHAT) strategy, which requires the knowledge of instantaneous full channel state information (CSI) and fading probability distribution, the ergodic throughput of this system may be greatly increased relative to that achieved by the harvestthen-transmit (HTT) protocol. To do so, instead of dividing every frame to the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL), the channel is allocated to the UL wireless information transmission (WIT) and…
Most work on wireless network throughput ignores the temporal correlation inherent to wireless channels because it degrades tractability. To better model and quantify the temporal variations of wireless network throughput, this paper introduces a metric termed ergodic transmission capacity (ETC), which includes spatial and temporal ergodicity. All transmitters in the network form a homogeneous Poisson point process and all channels are modeled by a finite state Markov chain. The bounds on outage probability and ETC are characterized, and their scaling behaviors for a sparse and dense network a…
The General Gaussian Multiple Access Wire-Tap Channel (GGMAC-WT) and the Gaussian Two-Way Wire-Tap Channel (GTW-WT) are considered. In the GGMAC-WT, multiple users communicate with an intended receiver in the presence of an eavesdropper who receives their signals through another GMAC. In the GTW-WT, two users communicate with each other over a common Gaussian channel, with an eavesdropper listening through a GMAC. A secrecy measure that is suitable for this multi-terminal environment is defined, and achievable secrecy rate regions are found for both channels. For both cases, the power allocati…
We consider the General Gaussian Multiple Access Wire-Tap Channel (GGMAC-WT). In this scenario, multiple users communicate with an intended receiver in the presence of an intelligent and informed eavesdropper who is as capable as the intended receiver, but has different channel parameters. We aim to provide perfect secrecy for the transmitters in this multi-access environment. Using Gaussian codebooks, an achievable secrecy region is determined and the power allocation that maximizes the achievable sum-rate is found. Numerical results showing the new rate region are presented. It is shown that…
In this paper, a multiple antenna wire-tap channel in the presence of a multi-antenna cooperative jammer is studied. In particular, the secure degrees of freedom (s.d.o.f.) of this channel is established, with $N_t$ antennas at the transmitter, $N_r$ antennas at the legitimate receiver, and $N_e$ antennas at the eavesdropper, for all possible values of the number of antennas, $N_c$, at the cooperative jammer. In establishing the result, several different ranges of $N_c$ need to be considered separately. The lower and upper bounds for these ranges of $N_c$ are derived, and are shown to be tight…
This study examines the use of nonsystematic channel codes to obtain secure transmissions over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) wire-tap channel. Unlike the previous approaches, we propose to implement nonsystematic coded transmission by scrambling the information bits, and characterize the bit error rate of scrambled transmissions through theoretical arguments and numerical simulations. We have focused on some examples of Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) and low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes to estimate the security gap, which we have used as a measure of physical layer security, …
This paper considers the input-erasure Gaussian channel. In contrast to the output-erasure channel where erasures are applied to the output of a linear time-invariant (LTI) system, here erasures, known to the receiver, are applied to the inputs of the LTI system. Focusing on the case where the input symbols are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d)., it is shown that the two channels (input- and output-erasure) are equivalent. Furthermore, assuming that the LTI system consists of a two-tap finite impulse response (FIR) filter, and using simple properties of tri-diagonal matrices, an …
We consider the secure transmission in ergodic fast-Rayleigh fading multiple-input single-output single-antennaeavesdropper (MISOSE) wiretap channels. We assume that the statistics of both the legitimate and eavesdropper channels is the only available channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). By introducing a new secrecy capacity upper bound, we prove that the secrecy capacity is achieved by Gaussian input without prefixing. To attain this, we form another MISOSE channel for upper-bounding, and tighten the bound by finding the worst correlations between the legitimate and eavesdropp…
Large intelligent surface (LIS)-assisted wireless communications have drawn attention worldwide. With the use of low-cost LIS on building walls, signals can be reflected by the LIS and sent out along desired directions by controlling its phases, thereby providing supplementary links for wireless communication systems. In this study, we evaluate the performance of an LIS-assisted large-scale antenna system by formulating a tight approximation of the ergodic capacity and investigate the effect of the phase shifts on the ergodic capacity in different propagation scenarios. In particular, we propo…
Universal security over a network with linear network coding has been intensively studied. However, previous linear codes used for this purpose were linear over a larger field than that used on the network. In this work, we introduce new parameters (relative dimension/rank support profile and relative generalized matrix weights) for linear codes that are linear over the field used in the network, measuring the universal security performance of these codes. The proposed new parameters enable us to use optimally universal secure linear codes on noiseless networks for all possible parameters, as …
With the growth of wireless networks, security has become a fundamental issue in wireless communications due to the broadcast nature of these networks. In this work, we consider MIMO wiretap channels in a fast fading environment, for which the overall performance is characterized by the ergodic MIMO secrecy rate. Unfortunately, the direct solution to finding ergodic secrecy rates is prohibitive due to the expectations in the rates expressions in this setting. To overcome this difficulty, we invoke the large-system assumption, which allows a deterministic approximation to the ergodic mutual inf…
This paper investigates generation of a secret key from a reciprocal wireless channel. In particular we consider wireless channels that exhibit sparse structure in the wideband regime and the impact of the sparsity on the secret key capacity. We explore this problem in two steps. First, we study key generation from a state-dependent discrete memoryless multiple source. The state of source captures the effect of channel sparsity. Secondly, we consider a wireless channel model that captures channel sparsity and correlation between the legitimate users' channel and the eavesdropper's channel. Suc…
Fundamental capacity limits are studied for the two-user wireless ergodic fading IC with partial Channel State Information at the Transmitters (CSIT) where each transmitter is equipped with an arbitrary deterministic function of the channel state (this model yields a full control over how much state information is available). One of the main challenges in the analysis of fading networks, specifically multi-receiver networks including fading ICs, is to obtain efficient capacity outer bounds. In this paper, a novel capacity outer bound is established for the two-user ergodic fading IC. For this …
Shannon's mutual information of a random multiple antenna and multipath channel is studied in the general case where the channel impulse response is an ergodic and stationary process which is assumed to be available at the receiver. From this viewpoint, the channel is represented by an ergodic self-adjoint block-Jacobi operator, which is close in many aspects to a block version of a random Schrödinger operator. The mutual information is then related to the so-called density of states of this operator. In this paper, it is shown that under the weakest assumptions on the channel, the mutual info…
This paper focuses on delivering quantified results for the evaluation of the aggregated impact of stochastic antenna misalignment, multipath fading and hardware imperfections on the terahertz (THz) wireless fiber extenders. In this line, we present the appropriate signal model that accommodates the different technical and environmental parameters. In particular, it takes into consideration the antenna gains, the central frequency, the transmission range, the environmental conditions, i.e. temperature, humidity and pressure, the spatial jitter between the transmitter and receiver antennas, whi…
In this paper, we consider a two-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying system, where the relay node is energy-constrained and harvests energy from the source node. In the literature, there are three main energy-harvesting (EH) protocols, namely, time-switching relaying (TSR), power-splitting (PS) relaying (PSR) and ideal relaying receiver (IRR). Unlike the existing studies, in this paper, we consider $α$-$μ$ fading channels. In this respect, we derive accurate unified analytical expressions for the ergodic capacity for the aforementioned protocols over independent but not identically distribut…
With the advent of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems, perfect (i.e. information-theoretic) security can now be achieved for distribution of a cryptographic key. QKD systems and similar protocols use classical error-correcting codes for both error correction (for the honest parties to correct errors) and privacy amplification (to make an eavesdropper fully ignorant). From a coding perspective, a good model that corresponds to such a setting is the wire tap channel introduced by Wyner in 1975. In this paper, we study fundamental limits and coding methods for wire tap channels. We provide an…
This paper presents a quantified assessment of the physical layer security capabilities of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless systems under eavesdropping. Specifically, we derive a closed-form expression for the ergodic secrecy capacity (ESC) that is adaptable to different types of fading and RIS size. The channels between the transmitter (TX) and RIS, the RIS and legitimate receiver as well as the TX and eavesdropper are assumed to follow independent mixture Gamma (MG) distributions. Note that MG is capable of modeling a large variety of well-known distributions, includin…
A Gaussian multiple-input single-output (MISO) wiretap channel model is considered, where there exists a transmitter equipped with multiple antennas, a legitimate receiver and an eavesdropper each equipped with a single antenna. We study the problem of finding the optimal input covariance that achieves ergodic secrecy capacity subject to a power constraint where only statistical information about the eavesdropper channel is available at the transmitter. This is a non-convex optimization problem that is in general difficult to solve. Existing results address the case in which the eavesdropper o…
The two-user wireless ergodic fading Broadcast Channel (BC) with partial Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) is considered. The CSIT is given by an arbitrary deterministic function of the channel state. This characteristic yields a full control over how much state information is available, from perfect to no information. In literature, capacity derivations for wireless ergodic fading channels, specifically for fading BCs, mostly rely on the analysis of channels comprising of parallel sub-channels. This technique is usually suitable for the cases where perfect state information …

本文研究了无线信道中在窃听者存在下的保密性问题,提出两种信道顺序关系,并证明在特定条件下,非预编码高斯输入为SOP、EPSR及ESR的最优解,同时推导了Rayleigh衰落信道的闭式表达式。
Universal security over a network with linear network coding has been intensively studied. However, previous linear codes and code pairs used for this purpose were linear over a larger field than that used on the network, which restricts the possible packet lengths of optimal universal secure codes, does not allow to apply known list-decodable rank-metric codes and requires performing operations over a large field. In this work, we introduce new parameters (relative generalized matrix weights and relative dimension/rank support profile) for code pairs that are linear over the field used in the…
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is an emerging technology to enhance wireless communication in terms of energy cost and system performance by equipping a considerable quantity of nearly passive reflecting elements. This study focuses on a downlink RIS-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system that comprises three communication links of Rician channel, including base station (BS) to RIS, RIS to user, and BS to user. The objective is to design an optimal transmit covariance matrix at BS and diagonal phase-shifting matrix at RIS to maximize the achievab…
We consider a fading wiretap channel model where the transmitter has only statistical channel state information, and the legitimate receiver and eavesdropper have perfect channel state information. We propose a sequence of non-random lattice codes which achieve strong secrecy and semantic security over ergodic fading channels. The construction is almost universal in the sense that it achieves the same constant gap to secrecy capacity over Gaussian and ergodic fading models.
We investigate the secrecy capacity of an ergodic fading wiretap channel in which the main channel is correlated with the eavesdropper channel. In this study, the full Channel State Information (CSI) is assumed, and thus the transmitter knows the channel gains of the legitimate receiver and the eavesdropper. By analyzing the resulting secrecy capacity we quantify the loss of the secrecy capacity due to the correlation. In addition, we study the asymptotic behavior of the secrecy capacity as Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) tends to infinity. The capacity of an ordinary fading channel logarithmicall…
In this paper, we consider a scenario where a source node wishes to broadcast two confidential messages for two respective receivers via a Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel. A wire-tapper also receives the transmitted signal via another MIMO channel. It is assumed that the channels are degraded and the wire-tapper has the worst channel. We establish the capacity region of this scenario. Our achievability scheme is a combination of the superposition of Gaussian codes and randomization within the layers which we will refer to as Secret Superposition Coding. For the outerbound, we use the notion of…
In coding schemes for the wire-tap channel or the broadcast channels with confidential messages, it is well known that the sender needs to use a stochastic encoding to avoid the information about the transmitted confidential message to be leaked to an eavesdropper. In this paper, it is investigated that the trade-off between the rate of the random number to realize the stochastic encoding and the rates of the common, private, and confidential messages. For the direct theorem, the superposition coding scheme for the wire-tap channel recently proposed by Chia and El Gamal is employed, and its st…
In this paper, we investigate the problem of secure broadcasting over block-fading channels with limited channel knowledge at the transmitter. More particularly, we analyze the effect of having imperfect channel state information (CSI) via a finite rate feedback on the throughput of a broadcast channel where the transmission is intended for multiple legitimate receivers in the presence of an eavesdropper. First, we partially characterize the ergodic secrecy capacity of the system when the source broadcasts the same information to all the receivers, i.e., common message transmission. Then, we l…
Optimal signalling over the Gaussian MIMO wire-tap channel is studied under the total transmit power constraint. A closed-form solution for an optimal transmit covariance matrix is obtained when the channel is strictly degraded. In combination with the rank-1 solution, this provides the complete characterization of the optimal covariance for the case of two transmit antennas. The cases of weak eavesdropper and high SNR are considered. It is shown that the optimal covariance does not converge to a scaled identity in the high-SNR regime. Necessary optimality conditions and a tight upper bound on…
This paper shows how the application of stochastic geometry to the analysis of wireless networks is greatly facilitated by (i) a clear separation of time scales, (ii) the abstraction of small-scale effects via ergodicity, and (iii) an interference model that reflects the receiver's lack of knowledge of how each individual interference term is faded. These procedures render the analysis both more manageable and more precise, as well as more amenable to the incorporation of subsequent features. In particular, the paper presents analytical characterizations of the ergodic spectral efficiency of c…
In this paper, we examine the benefits of multiple antenna communication in random wireless networks, the topology of which is modeled by stochastic geometry. The setting is that of the Poisson bipolar model introduced in [1], which is a natural model for ad-hoc and device-to-device (D2D) networks. The primary finding is that, with knowledge of channel state information between a receiver and its associated transmitter, by zero-forcing successive interference cancellation, and for appropriate antenna configurations, the ergodic spectral efficiency can be made to scale linearly with both 1) the…
In this work, we investigate the problem of secure broadcasting over block-fading wiretap channels with limited channel knowledge at the transmitter. More particularly, we analyze the effect of having a finite rate feedback on the throughput of multi-user broadcast wiretap channels. We consider that the transmitter is only provided by a $b$-bits feedback of the main channel state information (CSI) sent by each legitimate receiver, at the beginning of each fading block, over error-free public links with limited capacity. Also, we assume that the transmitter is aware of the statistics of the eav…
In this paper, we propose novel low-complexity adaptive channel estimation techniques for mob ile wireless chan- n els in presence of Rayleigh fading, carrier frequency offsets (CFO) and random channel variations. We show that the selective p artial update of the estimated channel tap-weight vector offers a better trade-off between the performance and computational complexity, compared to the full update of the estimated channel tap-weight vector. We evaluate the mean-square weight error of th e proposed methods and demonstrate the usefulness of its via simulation studies.
Radio-frequency energy harvesting constitutes an effective way to prolong the lifetime of wireless networks, wean communication devices off the battery and power line, benefit the energy saving and lower the carbon footprint of wireless communications. In this paper, an interference aided energy harvesting scheme is proposed for cooperative relaying systems, where energy-constrained relays harvest energy from the received information signal and co-channel interference signals, and then use that harvested energy to forward the correctly decoded signal to the destination. The time-switching sche…
In interference alignment, users sharing a wireless channel are each able to achieve data rates of up to half of the non-interfering channel capacity, no matter the number of users. In an ergodic setting, this is achieved by pairing complementary channel realizations in order to amplify signals and cancel interference. However, this scheme has the possibility for large delays in decoding message symbols. We show that delay can be mitigated by using outputs from potentially more than two channel realizations, although data rate may be reduced. We further demonstrate the tradeoff between rate an…
In this paper, we investigate the secrecy performance of stochastic MIMO wireless networks over small-scale $α$-$μ$ fading channels, where both the legitimate receivers and eavesdroppers are distributed with two independent homogeneous Poisson point processes (HPPPs). Specifically, accounting for the presence of non-colluding eavesdroppers, secrecy performance metrics, including the connection outage probability (COP), the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNZ) and ergodic secrecy capacity, are derived regarding the $k$-th nearest/best user cases. The index for the $k$-th nearest user …
Ergodic capacity and average bit error rate have been widely used to compare the performance of different wireless communication systems. As such recent scientific research and studies revealed strong impact of designing and implementing wireless technologies based on these two performance indicators. However and to the best of our knowledge, the direct links between these two performance indicators have not been explicitly proposed in the literature so far. In this paper, we propose novel relations between the ergodic capacity and the average bit error rate of an overall communication system …
We consider the extra degree of freedom offered by the rotation of the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) plane and investigate its potential in improving the performance of RIS-assisted wireless communication systems. By considering radiation pattern modeling at all involved nodes, we first derive the composite channel gain and present a closed-form upper bound for the system ergodic capacity over cascade Rician fading channels. Then, we reconstruct the composite channel gain by taking the rotations at the RIS plane, transmit antenna, and receive antenna into account, and extract the op…
