We examine the HI content and environment of all of the Local Group dwarf galaxies (M_tot < 10^10 M_solar), including the numerous newly discovered satellites of the Milky Way and M31. All of the new dwarfs, with the exception of Leo T, have no detected HI. The majority of dwarf galaxies within ~270 kpc of the Milky Way or Andromeda are undetected in HI (< 10^5 M_solar for Milky Way dwarfs), while those further than ~270 kpc are predominantly detected with masses ~10^5 to 10^8 M_solar. Analytical ram-pressure arguments combined with velocities obtained via proper motion studies allow for an estimate of the halo density of the Milky Way at several distances. This halo density is constrained to be greater than 2-3 x 10^-4 cm^-3 out to distances of at least 70 kpc. This is broadly consistent with theoretical models of the diffuse gas in a Milky Way-like halo and is consistent with this component hosting a large fraction of a galaxy's baryons. Accounting for completeness in the dwarf galaxy count, gas-less dwarf galaxies could have provided at most 2.1 x 10^8 M_solar of HI gas to the Milky Way, which suggests that most of our Galaxy's star formation fuel does not come from accreted small satellites in the current era.
We numerically investigate evolution of gaseous halos around disk galaxies in different environments ranging from small groups to rich clusters in order to understand galaxy evolution in these environments. Our simulations self-consistently incorporate effects of ram pressure of intergalactic medium (IGM) on disk and halo gas of galaxies and hydrodynamical interaction between disk and halo gas so that mass fractions of halos gas stripped by ram pressure of IGM (F_strip) can be better estimated. We mainly investigate how F_strip depends on total masses of their host environments (M_host}), gala…
We conduct hydrodynamical cosmological zoom simulations of fourteen voids to study the ability of haloes to accrete gas at different locations throughout the voids at z = 0. Measuring the relative velocity of haloes with respect to their ambient gas, we find that a tenth of the haloes are expected to be unable to accrete external gas due to its fast flow passed them (so called 'fast flow haloes'). These are typically located near void walls. We determine that these haloes have recently crossed the void wall and are still moving away from it. their motion counter to that of ambient gas falling …
Simulations of ultralight, $\sim 10^{-22}\,\rm eV$, bosonic dark matter exhibit rich wave-like structure, including a soliton core within a surrounding halo that continuously self-interferes on the de Broglie scale. We show here that as an inherent consequence, the soliton undergoes a confined random walk at the base of the halo potential. This is significant for the fate of the ancient central star cluster in Eridanus II, as the agitated soliton gravitationally shakes the star cluster in and out of the soliton on a time scale of $\sim 100\,\rm Myr$, so complete tidal disruption of the star cl…
Ultra Compact Dwarf Galaxies (UCDs) and dwarf galaxy nuclei have many common properties, such as internal velocity dispersions and colour-magnitude trends, suggesting tidally stripped dwarf galaxies as a possible UCD origin. However, UCDs typically have sizes more than twice as large as nuclei at the same luminosity. We use a GPU-enabled version of the particle-mesh code \textsc{superbox} to study the possibility of turning nucleated dwarf galaxies into UCDs by tidally stripping them in a Virgo-like galaxy cluster. We find that motion in spherical potentials, where close passages happen many t…
We study the properties of distinct dark matter halos (i.e., those that are not subhalos) that have a final virial mass $M_{\mathrm{vir}}$ at $z = 0$ less than their peak mass ($M_{\mathrm{peak}}$) in the Bolshoi-Planck cosmological simulation. We identify two primary causes of halo mass loss: relaxation after a major merger and tidal stripping by a massive neighbouring halo. Major mergers initially boost $M_{\mathrm{vir}}$ and typically cause the final halo to become more prolate and less relaxed and to have higher spin and lower NFW concentration. As the halo relaxes, high energy material fr…
We use an analytical approach to study ram pressure stripping with simple models for discs and halo gas distribution to study the phenomena in cluster, group and galaxy halos. We also study variations with galaxy properties and redshift. In each case we model the worst case scenario (i.e., maximum effect due to ram pressure). We show that there is little variation in the worst case scenario with redshift. We find that gas discs in galaxies with a higher spin parameter get stripped sooner than galaxies with a smaller spin parameter. Galaxies in cluster halos get stripped of gas more effciently …
We introduce a Local Background Environment (LBE) estimator that can be measured in and around every galaxy or its dark matter subhalo in high-resolution cosmological simulations. The LBE is designed to capture the influence of environmental effects such as ram-pressure stripping on the formation and evolution of galaxies in semi-analytical models. We define the LBE directly from the particle data within an adaptive spherical shell, and devise a Gaussian mixture estimator to separate background particles from previously unidentified subhalo particles. Analyzing the LBE properties, we find that…
A recent survey of the Galaxy and M31 reveals that more than 90% of dwarf galaxies within 270 kpc of their host galaxy are deficient in HI gas. At such an extreme radius, the coronal halo gas is an order of magnitude too low to remove HI gas through ram-pressure stripping for any reasonable orbit distribution. However, all dwarfs are known to have an ancient stellar population (\geq 10 Gyr) from early epochs of vigorous star formation which, through heating of HI, could allow the hot halo to remove this gas. Our model looks at the evolution of these dwarf galaxies analytically as the host-gala…

We propose that the Ultra-Diffuse Galaxy (UDG) population represents a set of satellite galaxies born in $\sim10^{10}-10^{11}$ M$_\odot$ halos, similar to field dwarfs, which suffer a dramatic reduction in surface brightness due to tidal stripping and heating. This scenario is observationally motivated by the radial alignment of UDGs in Coma as well as the significant dependence of UDG abundance on cluster mass. As a test of this formation scenario, we apply a semi-analytic model describing the change in stellar mass and half-light radius of dwarf satellites, occupying either cored or cuspy ha…
In the standard Lambda-CDM paradigm, dwarf galaxies are expected to be dark-matter-rich, as baryonic feedback is thought to quickly drive gas out of their shallow potential wells and quench star formation at early epochs. Recent observations of local dwarfs with extremely low dark matter content appear to contradict this picture, potentially bringing the validity of the standard model into question. We use NewHorizon, a high-resolution cosmological simulation, to demonstrate that sustained stripping of dark matter, in tidal interactions between a massive galaxy and a dwarf satellite, naturally…
Satellite galaxies in galaxy clusters represent a significant fraction of the global galaxy population. Because of the unusual dense environment of clusters, their evolution is driven by different mechanisms than the ones affecting field or central galaxies. Understanding the different interactions they are subject to, and how they are influenced by them, is therefore an important step towards explaining the global picture of galaxy evolution. In this paper, we use the publicly-available high resolution hydrodynamical simulation Illustris-1 to study satellite galaxies in the three most massive…
A conclusive model for the formation of dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies still remains elusive. Owing to their proximity to the massive spirals Milky Way (MW) and M31, various environmental processes have been invoked to explain their origin. In this context, the tidal stirring model postulates that interactions with MW-sized hosts can transform rotationally supported dwarfs, resembling present-day dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxies, into systems with the kinematic and structural properties of dSphs. Using N-body+SPH simulations, we investigate the dependence of this transformation mechanism on t…
Satellite galaxies undergo a variety of physical processes when they are accreted by groups and clusters, often resulting in the loss of baryonic and dark matter (DM) mass. In this work, we evaluate the predictions from the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulation regarding the evolution of the matter content of satellites, focusing on a population that are accreted at $z>1$ and retain their identity as satellites down to $z=0$. At fixed host halo mass, the amount of DM and stellar mass stripped depends mostly on the pericentric distance, $d_{\rm peri}$, here normalised by host halo virial radiu…
We present the results of a Keck/DEIMOS survey of Ultra Compact Dwarfs (UCDs) in the Perseus Cluster core. We confirm cluster membership for 14 UCDs, with radial velocities ~5300 km s$^{-1}$. Two of these confirmed Perseus UCDs have extremely blue colours ($B-R < 0.6$ mag), reside in star forming filaments surrounding NGC 1275, and have likely formed as massive star clusters in the last ~100 Myr. We also measure a central velocity dispersion of a third, UCD13 ($σ_0 = 38 \pm 8$ km s$^{-1}$), the most extended UCD in our sample. We determine it to have radius $R_{e} = 85 \pm 1.1$ pc, a dynamical…
We investigate the effects of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) on the tidal stripping and evaporation of satellite galaxies in a Milky Way-like host. We use a suite of five zoom-in, dark-matter-only simulations, two with velocity-independent SIDM cross sections, two with velocity-dependent SIDM cross sections, and one cold dark matter simulation for comparison. After carefully assigning stellar mass to satellites at infall, we find that stars are stripped at a higher rate in SIDM than in CDM. In contrast, the total bound dark matter mass loss rate is minimally affected, with subhalo evapora…
We study ram pressure stripping in simulated Milky Way-like halos at z>=2 from the Figuring Out Gas & Galaxies In Enzo (FOGGIE) project. These simulations reach exquisite resolution in their circumgalactic medium (CGM) gas owing to FOGGIE's novel refinement scheme. The CGM of each halo spans a wide dynamic range in density and velocity over its volume---roughly 6 dex and 1000 km/s, respectively---translating into a 5 dex range in ram pressure imparted to interacting satellites. The ram pressure profiles of the simulated CGM are highly stochastic, owing to kpc-scale variations of the density an…
The shallow faint-end slope of the galaxy mass function is usually reproduced in $Λ$CDM galaxy formation models by assuming that the fraction of baryons that turns into stars drops steeply with decreasing halo mass and essentially vanishes in haloes with maximum circular velocities $V_{\rm max}<20$-$30$ km/s. Dark matter-dominated dwarfs should therefore have characteristic velocities of about that value, unless they are small enough to probe only the rising part of the halo circular velocity curve (i.e., half-mass radii, $r_{1/2}\ll 1$ kpc). Many dwarfs have properties in disagreement with th…
Dwarf galaxies are affected by all the evolutionary processes normally at work in galaxies of any mass. As fainter and less massive galaxies, however, dwarf galaxies are particularly susceptible to environmental mechanisms that can more easily perturb these systems. Importantly, the presence of nearby large galaxies are expected to have a profound effect on dwarf galaxies. Gravitational (especially tidally-induced) effects from the large galaxy can cause mass to be lost from the dwarf, and the passage of the dwarf through the gaseous medium surrounding the large galaxy can additionally cause t…
The quenching of star formation in satellite galaxies is observed over a wide range of dark matter halo masses and galaxy environments. In the recent Guo et al (2011) and Fu et al (2013) semi-analytic + N-body models, the gaseous environment of the satellite galaxy is governed by the properties of the dark matter subhalo in which it resides. This quantity depends of the resolution of the N-body simulation, leading to a divergent fraction of quenched satellites in high- and low-resolution simulations. Here, we incorporate an analytic model to trace the subhaloes below the resolution limit. We d…
The Magellanic Bridge (MB) is a gaseous stream that links the Large (LMC) and Small (SMC) Magellanic Clouds. Current simulations suggest that the MB forms from a recent interaction between the Clouds. In this scenario, the MB should also have an associated stellar bridge formed by stars tidally stripped from the SMC by the LMC. There are several observational evidences for these stripped stars, from the presence of intermediate age populations in the MB and carbon stars, to the recent observation of an over-density of RR Lyrae stars offset from the MB. However, spectroscopic confirmation of st…
The spatial segregation between dSphs and dIrrs in the Local Group has long been regarded as evidence of an interaction with their host galaxies. In this paper, we assume that ram-pressure stripping is the dominant mechanism that removed gas from the dSphs and we use this to derive a lower bound on the density of the corona of the Milky Way at large distances (50-90 kpc) from the Galactic centre. At the same time, we derive an upper bound by demanding that the interstellar medium of the dSphs is in pressure equilibrium with the hot corona. We consider two dwarfs (Sextans and Carina) with well-…
The gas content of the complete compilation of Local Group dwarf galaxies (119 within 2 Mpc) is presented using HI survey data. Within the virial radius of the Milky Way (224 kpc here), 53 of 55 dwarf galaxies are devoid of gas to limits of M$_{\rm HI}<10^4$ M$_\odot$. Within the virial radius of M31 (266 kpc), 27 of 30 dwarf galaxies are devoid of gas (with limits typically $<10^5$ M$_\odot$). Beyond the virial radii of the Milky Way and M31, the majority of the dwarf galaxies have detected HI gas and have HI masses higher than the limits. When the relationship between gas content and distanc…
The evolution of dwarf satellites of the Milky Way is affected by the combination of ram pressure and tidal stripping, and internal feedback from massive stars. We investigate gas loss processes in the smallest satellites of the Milky Way using three-dimensional, high resolution, idealized wind tunnel simulations, accounting for gas loss through both ram pressure stripping and expulsion by supernova feedback. Using initial conditions appropriate for a dwarf galaxy like Leo T, we investigate whether or not environmental gas stripping and internal feedback can quench these low mass galaxies on t…
Using high resolution hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, we conduct a comprehensive study of how tidal stripping removes dark matter and stars from galaxies. We find that dark matter is always stripped far more significantly than the stars -- galaxies that lose $\sim$80$\%$ of their dark matter, typically lose only 10$\%$ of their stars. This is because the dark matter halo is initially much more extended than the stars. As such, we find the stellar-to-halo size-ratio (measured using r$_{\rm{eff}}$/r$_{\rm{vir}}$) is a key parameter controlling the relative amounts of dark matter and ste…
Dwarf irregular galaxies (dIrrs) including the Magellanic Clouds in the local Universe, in many cases, exhibit an unusually low N/O abundance ratio (log N/O ~ -1.5) in H II regions as compared with the solar value (~-0.9). This ratio is broadly equivalent to the average level of extremely metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo, suggesting that N released from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars is missing in the present-day interstellar matter of these dIrrs. We find evidence for past tidal interactions in the properties of individual dIrrs exhibiting low N/O ratios, while a clear signature of …
We examine the scatter of the relation between stellar mass and stellar metallicity for cluster dwarf galaxies in the cosmological simulation Illustris. The mass-metallicity relation exhibits the smallest intrinsic scatter at the galaxies' times of peak stellar mass, suggesting stellar mass stripping to be the primary effect responsible for the rather broad relation at present. However, for about 40% of galaxies in the high-metallicity tail of the relation, we find mass stripping to coincide with an increased enrichment of stellar metallicity, possibly caused by the stripping of low-metallicit…
We use N-body simulations to study the effects of tides on the kinematical structure of satellite galaxies orbiting a Milky Way-like potential. Our work is motivated by observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Local Group, for which often a distinction is possible between a cold centrally concentrated metal rich and a hot, extended metal poor population. We find that an important attenuation of the initial differences in the distribution of the two stellar components occurs for orbits with small pericentric radii (r_per < 20 kpc). This is mainly due to: i) the loss of the gravitational…
We explore a range of chemical evolution models for the Local Group dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy, Carina. A novel aspect of our work is the removal of the star formation history (SFH) as a `free parameter' in the modeling, making use, instead, of its colour-magnitude diagram (CMD)-constrained SFH. By varying the relative roles of galactic winds, re-accretion, and ram-pressure stripping within the modeling, we converge on a favoured scenario which emphasises the respective roles of winds and re-accretion. While our model is successful in recovering most elemental abundance patterns, comparabl…
Milky Way's hot gaseous halo extends up to the Galactic virial radius ($\sim 200$ kpc) and contains a significant component of baryon mass of the Galaxy. The halo properties can be constrained from X-ray spectroscopic observations and from satellite galaxies' ram-pressure stripping studies. Results of the former method crucially depend on the gas metallicity assumptions while the latter one's are insensitive to them. Here, a joint analysis of both kinds of data is presented to constrain electron density and metallicity of the gas. The power law is assumed for the electron density radial profil…
Recent studies of galaxies in the local Universe, including those in the Local Group, find that the efficiency of environmental (or satellite) quenching increases dramatically at satellite stellar masses below ~ $10^8\ {\rm M}_{\odot}$. This suggests a physical scale where quenching transitions from a slow "starvation" mode to a rapid "stripping" mode at low masses. We investigate the plausibility of this scenario using observed HI surface density profiles for a sample of 66 nearby galaxies as inputs to analytic calculations of ram-pressure and viscous stripping. Across a broad range of host p…

We use the hydrodynamical EAGLE simulation to test if ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) can form by tidal stripping by predicting the ages and metallicities of tidally stripped galaxy nuclei in massive galaxy clusters, and compare these results to compiled observations of age and metallicities of observed UCDs. We further calculate the colours of our sample of simulated stripped nuclei using SSP models and compare these colours to observations of UCDs in the Virgo cluster. We find that the ages of observed UCDs are consistent with simulated stripped nuclei, with both groups of objects having…

Using dark matter only N-body cosmological simulations, we measure the pericentre distance of dark matter halos on their first infall into group and cluster halos. We find that the pericentre distance (R$_{\rm{peri}}$) is an important parameter as it significantly affects the strength of tidal mass loss in dense environments, and likely other environmental mechanisms as well. We examine what determines the R$_{\rm{peri}}$ value and find that, for most infallers, the dominant parameter is V$_{\rm{\perp}}$, the tangential component of the orbital velocity as the halo enters the group/cluster hal…
Using a cosmological N-body numerical simulation of the formation of a galaxy cluster- sized halo, we analyze the temporal evolution of its globular cluster population. We follow the dynamical evolution of 38 galactic dark matter halos orbiting in a galaxy cluster that at redshift z=0 has a virial mass of 1.71 * 10 ^14 Msol h^-1. In order to mimic both "blue" and "red" populations of globular clusters, for each galactic halo we select two different sets of particles at high redshift (z ~ 1), constrained by the condition that, at redshift z=0, their average radial density profiles are similar t…
In the current epoch, one of the main mechanisms driving the growth of galaxy clusters is the continuous accretion of group-scale halos. In this process, the ram pressure applied by the hot intracluster medium on the gas content of the infalling group is responsible for stripping the gas from its dark-matter halo, which gradually leads to the virialization of the infalling gas in the potential well of the main cluster. Using deep wide-field observations of the poor cluster Hydra A/A780 with XMM-Newton and Suzaku, we report the discovery of an infalling galaxy group 1.1 Mpc south of the cluster…
[Abridged] Aims. The lowest-mass galaxies, ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, promise unparalleled constraints on how feedback regulates galaxy formation, and on the small-scale matter power spectrum. Their inner dark-matter densities can also be used to constrain dark-matter models. In this paper, we present 201 new stellar line-of-sight velocities from the MUSE-Faint survey for the (ultra-)faint dwarf galaxies Antlia B, Leo T, Hydra II, and Grus 1. Combining these with literature data, we obtain the tightest constraints to date on their dark-matter halo masses and inner dark-matter densities. Metho…
The nearby cluster Abell 1795 is used as a testbed to examine whether hot gas in cluster galaxies is stripped by the ram pressure of the intracluster medium (ICM). The expected X-ray emission in and around Abell 1795 galaxies is likely dominated by the ICM, low-mass X-ray binaries, active galactic nuclei, and hot gas halos. In order to constrain these components, we use archival Chandra X-ray Observatory and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) observations of Abell 1795 and identify 58 massive (M_star>10^10 M_sun) spectroscopic cluster members within 5 arcmin of the Chandra optical axis. X-ray ima…
We present a new model for the formation of stellar halos in dwarf galaxies. We demonstrate that the stars and star clusters that form naturally in the inner regions of dwarfs are expected to migrate from the gas rich, star forming centre to join the stellar spheroid. For dwarf galaxies, this process could be the dominant source of halo stars. The effect is caused by stellar feedback-driven bulk motions of dense gas which, by causing potential fluctuations in the inner regions of the halo, couple to all collisionless components. This effect has been demonstrated to generate cores in otherwise …
We use Hubble Space Telescope imaging to show that the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 4449 has an unusual abundance of luminous red star clusters. Joint constraints from integrated photometry, low-resolution spectroscopy, dynamical mass-to-light ratios, and resolved color-magnitude diagrams provide evidence that some of these clusters are old globular clusters. Spectroscopic data for two massive clusters suggest intermediate metallicities ([Fe/H] ~ -1) and subsolar Mg enhancement ([Mg/Fe] ~ -0.1 to -0.2). One of these clusters may be the nucleus of a tidally disrupting dwarf galaxy; the oth…
Dwarf galaxies and their dark matter (DM) halos have the velocity curves of a different character than those in large galaxies. They are modelled by a simple pseudo iso-thermal model containing only two parameters that do not allow to obtain insight into physics of the DM halo. We would like to obtain some insight into the physical conditions in DM halos of dwarf galaxies by using a simple physically based model of DM halos. In order to treat a diversity of the dwarf galaxy velocity profiles in a unifying framework, we apply the polytropic spheres characterised by the polytropic index $n$ and …
We predict the stellar mass-halo mass (SMHM) relationship for dwarf galaxies and their satellites residing in halos down to M$_{halo} =$ 10$^7$ M$_{\odot}$ with 10$^4$ M$_{\odot} <$ M$_{star}$($z=0$) $< 10^8$ M$_{\odot}$, and quantify the predicted scatter in the relation at the low mass end, using cosmological simulations. The galaxies were drawn from a cosmological simulation of dwarf galaxies, run with the N-body + SPH code, ChaNGA, at a high resolution of 60 pc. For M$_{halo} > 10^9$ M$_{\odot}$, the simulated SMHM relationship agrees with literature determinations, including exhibiting a …
The advent of new deep+wide photometric lensing surveys will open up the possibility of direct measurements of the dark matter halos of dwarf galaxies. The HSC wide survey will be the first with the statistical capability of measuring the lensing signal with high signal-to-noise at log(M*)=8. At this same mass scale, LSST will have the most overall constraining power with a predicted signal-to-noise for the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal around dwarfs of SN=200. WFIRST and LSST will have the greatest potential to push below the log(M*) = 7 mass scale thanks to the depth of their imaging data. St…
Within the Cold Dark Matter scenario the hierarchical merging paradigm is the natural result to form massive galactic halos by the minor mergers of sub-halos and, by this, inherently their stellar halo. Although this must be also invoked for the Milky Way, the context of chemical and kinematic coherence of halo stars and dwarf spheroidal galaxies is yet unsolved a focus of present-day research. To examine this issue we model the chemo-dynamical evolution of the system of satellites selected from the cosmological Via Lactea II simulations to be similar for the Milky Way environment but at an ea…
We investigate the growth histories of dark matter halos associated with dwarf satellites in Local Group galaxies and the resultant evolution of the baryonic component. Our model is based on the recently proposed property that the mean surface density of a dark halo inside a radius at maximum circular velocity V_max is universal over a large range of V_max. Following that this surface density of 20 Msun/pc^2 well explains dwarf satellites in the Milky Way and Andromeda, we find that the evolution of the dark halo in this common surface-density scale is characterized by the rapid increase of th…
The infall of the Sagittarius (Sgr) Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy in the Milky Way halo is an unique opportunity to understand how the different components of a dwarf galaxy could be tidally removed. In this work, we reconstruct the Sgr core morphology and kinematics on the basis of a model that has already successfully reproduced the Sgr stream. Here we use a very high resolution model that almost resolves individual stars in the Sgr core. It reproduces most of the observed morphology and kinematic properties, without specific fine-tuning. We also show that the dark matter may have been almost enti…
We review numerical work carried out over the last decade on the role of environmental mechanisms in shaping the nature of the faintest galaxies known, dwarf spheroidals (dSphs). In particular we discuss a model in which dSphs originated from gas dominated, disky dwarfs that were accreted by massive galaxies several billions of years ago. Dwarfs accreting at $z > 1$, when the cosmic ultraviolet ionizing flux was much higher than today and was thus able to keep the gas in the dwarfs warm and diffuse, were rapidly stripped of their baryons via ram pressure and tidal forces, producing very dark m…
The remarkable 1994 discovery of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (Sgr) revealed that, together with the Magellanic Clouds (MCs), there are at least three major dwarf galaxies, each with a total mass of order 10^10 - 10^11 solar masses, falling onto the Galaxy in the present epoch. Beyond a Galactic radius of 300 kpc, dwarfs tend to retain their gas. At roughly 50 kpc, the MCs have experienced substantial gas stripping as evidenced by the Magellanic Stream which extends from them. Since Sgr experienced star formation long after it fell into the Galaxy, it is interesting to explore just how and whe…
Motivated by a recently found interesting property of the dark halo surface density within a radius, $r_{\rm max}$, giving the maximum circular velocity, $V_{\rm max}$, we investigate it for dark halos of the Milky Way's and Andromeda's dwarf satellites based on cosmological simulations. We select and analyze the simulated subhalos associated with Milky Way-sized dark halos and find that the values of their surface densities, $Σ_{V_{\rm max}}$, are in good agreement with those for the observed dwarf spheroidal satellites even without employing any fitting procedures. This implies that this sur…
We present predictions for the quenching of star formation in satellite galaxies of the Local Group from a suite of 30 cosmological zoom simulations of Milky Way-like host galaxies. The Auriga simulations resolve satellites down to the luminosity of the classical dwarf spheroidal galaxies of the Milky Way. We find strong mass-dependent and distance-dependent quenching signals, where dwarf systems beyond 600 kpc are only strongly quenched below a stellar mass of $10^7$ M$_\odot$. Ram pressure stripping appears to be the dominant quenching mechanism and 50% of quenched systems cease star formati…
We present an analysis of the formation and chemical evolution of stellar haloes around (a) Milky Way Analogue (MWA) galaxies and (b) galaxy clusters in the L-Galaxies 2020 semi-analytic model of galaxy evolution. Observed stellar halo properties are better reproduced when assuming a gradual stripping model for the removal of cold gas and stars from satellites, compared to an instantaneous stripping model. The slope of the stellar mass -- metallicity relation for MWA stellar haloes is in good agreement with that observed in the local Universe. This extends the good agreement between L-Galaxies…
