We consider a Georgi-Glashow model conformally coupled to gravity. The conformally invariant action includes a triplet of scalar fields and SO(3) non-Abelian gauge fields. However, the usual mass term $μ^2 ϕ^2$ is forbidden by the symmetry and this role is now played by the conformal coupling of the Ricci scalar to the scalar fields. Spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs via gravitation. The spherically symmetric solutions correspond to localized solitons (magnetic monopoles) in asymptotically anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space-time and the metric outside the core of the monopole is found to be Schwarzschild-AdS. Though conformal symmetry excludes the Einstein-Hilbert term in the original action, it emerges in the effective action after spontaneous symmetry breaking and dominates the low-energy/long-distance regime outside the core of the monopole.
We construct monopole solutions in SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory, carrying magnetic charge n. For vanishing and small Higgs selfcoupling, these multimonopole solutions are gravitationally bound. Their mass per unit charge is lower than the mass of the n=1 monopole. For large Higgs selfcoupling only a repulsive phase exists.
We implement quantum corrections for a magnetic monopole in a classically conformally invariant theory containing gravity. This yields the trace (conformal) anomaly and introduces a length scale in a natural fashion via the process of renormalization. We evaluate the one-loop effective potential and extract the vacuum expectation value (VEV) from it; spontaneous symmetry breaking is radiatively induced. The VEV is set at the renormalization scale $M$ and we exchange the dimensionless scalar coupling constant for the dimensionful VEV via dimensional transmutation. The asymptotic (background) sp…
Bardeen proposed a gravitationally collapsing magnetic monopole black hole solution which is free of singularity. In this article, we have studied the size and shape of the rotating Bardeen blackhole shadow in presence of perfect fluid dark matter. we have discussed how the parameters such a spin, magnetic monopole charge and influence of dark matter affects the shadow of our blackhole. The apparent shape of the blackhole was studied by using two observables, the radius Rs and the distortion parameter R_s. Further the blackhole emission rate is also studied, we found out that for rotating Bard…
The spatial gradient expansion of the generating functional was recently developed by Parry, Salopek, and Stewart to solve the Hamiltonian constraint in Einstein-Hamilton-Jacobi theory for gravitationally interacting dust and scalar fields. This expansion is used here to derive an order-by-order solution of the Hamiltonian constraint for gravitationally interacting electromagnetic and scalar fields. A conformal transformation and functional integral are used to derive the generating functional up to the terms fourth order in spatial gradients. The perturbations of a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Wa…
The time evolution of strongly exited SU(2) Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) magnetic monopoles in Minkowski spacetime is investigated by means of numerical simulations based on the technique of conformal compactification and on the use of hyperboloidal initial value problem. It is found that an initially static monopole does not radiate the entire energy of the exciting pulse toward future null infinity. Rather, a long-lasting quasi-stable `breathing state' develops in the central region and certain expanding shell structures -- built up by very high frequency oscillations -- are formed in …
A field-theoretic model for a highly compact object that mimicks a black hole is found for the gravitationally interacting system of a boson star and a global monopole which are nonminimally coupled to gravity. According to the strength of the nonlinear gravitational effects and the gravitational backreaction, three distinct coupling regimes are featured: weak, mild and strong. In the strong coupling regime we show that a repulsive monopole stabilizes an attractive boson star and the resulting configuration exhibits large energy density, large (and negative) principal pressures, large compactn…
Weyl derivatives, Weyl-Lie derivatives and conformal submersions are defined, then used to generalize the Jones-Tod correspondence between selfdual 4-manifolds with symmetry and Einstein-Weyl 3-manifolds with an abelian monopole. In this generalization, the conformal symmetry is replaced by a particular kind of conformal submersion with one dimensional fibres. Special cases are studied in which the conformal submersion is holomorphic, affine, or projective. All scalar-flat Kahler metrics with such a holomorphic conformal submersion, and all four dimensional hypercomplex structures with a compa…
Within quantum field theory on a global monopole spacetime, we study thermal effects on a naked singularity and its relation with boundary conditions. We first obtain the two-points functions for the ground state and for thermal states of a massive, arbitrarily-coupled, free scalar field compatible with Robin boundary conditions at the singularity. We then probe these states using a static Unruh-Dewitt particle detector. The transition rate is analyzed for the particular cases of massless minimally or conformally coupled fields at finite temperature. To interpret the detector's behavior, we co…
We study the theory of Weyl conformal gravity with matter degrees of freedom in a conformally invariant interaction. Specifically, we consider a triplet of scalar fields and SO(3) non-abelian gauge fields, i.e. the Georgi-Glashow model conformally coupled to Weyl gravity. We show that the equations of motion admit solutions spontaneously breaking the conformal symmetry and the gauge symmetry, providing a mechanism for supplying a scale in the theory. The vacuum solution corresponds to anti-de-Sitter space-time, while localized soliton solutions correspond to magnetic monopoles in asymptoticall…
Preliminary results concerning the time evolution of strongly exited SU(2) Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) magnetic monopoles have been published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 151801 (2004). The behavior of these dynamical magnetic monopoles was investigated by means of numerical simulations in the four dimensional Minkowski spacetime. The developed code incorporates both the techniques of conformal compactification and that of the hyperboloidal initial value problem. Our primary aim here is to provide a detailed account on the methods and results of the investigations reported in Phys. Rev. Lett…
We study a higher order conformally coupled scalar tensor theory endowed with a covariant geometric constraint relating the scalar curvature with the Gauss-Bonnet scalar. It is a particular Horndeski theory including a canonical kinetic term but without shift or parity symmetry for the scalar. The theory also stems from a Kaluza-Klein reduction of a well defined higher dimensional metric theory. Properties of an asymptotically flat spherically symmetric black hole are analyzed, and new slowly rotating and radiating extensions are found. Through disformal transformations of the static configura…
In Horava's theory of gravity coupled to a global monopole source, we seek for static, spherically symmetric spacetime solutions for general values of $λ$. We obtain the explicit solutions with deficit solid angles, in the IR modified Horava gravity model, at the IR fixed point $λ=1$ and at the conformal point $λ=1/3$. For the other values of $1>λ>0$ we also find special solutions to the inhomogenous equation of the gravity model with detailed balance, and we discuss an possibility of astrophysical applications of the $λ=1/2$ solution that has a deficit angle for a finite range.
Bertotti-Robinson spacetimes are topologically $AdS_2 \times S^2$ and described by a conformally flat metric. Together with the Coulomb electric potential, they provide a class of static, geodetically complete Einstein-Maxwell solutions. We show here that the Bertotti-Robinson metric together with Wu-Yang magnetic pole potentials give a class of static solutions of a system of non-minimally coupled Einstein-Yang-Mills equations that may be relevant for investigating vacuum polarization effects in a first order perturbative approach to quantum fields.
This paper is devoted to the construction of the renormalized quantum stress energy tensor $\left<T_μ^ν\right>_{ren}$ for a massive scalar field with arbitrary coupling to the gravitational field of a pointlike global monopole, using the Schwinger-DeWitt approximation, up to second order in the inverse mass $μ$ of the field. The given stress energy tensor is constructed by functional differentiation with respect to the metric tensor of the one-loop effective action of sufficiently massive scalar field, such that the Compton length of the quantum field is much less than the characteristic radiu…
We show that the previously obtained subtracted geometry of four-dimensional asymptotically flat multi-charged rotating black holes, whose massless wave equation exhibit $SL(2,\R) \times SL(2,\R) \times SO(3)$ symmetry may be obtained by a suitable scaling limit of certain asymptotically flat multi-charged rotating black holes, which is reminiscent of near-extreme black holes in the dilute gas approximation. The co-homogeneity-two geometry is supported by a dilation field and two (electric) gauge-field strengths. We also point out that these subtracted geometries can be obtained as a particula…
The scalar and electromagnetic fields produced by the geodesic and uniformly accelerated discrete charges in de Sitter spacetime are constructed by employing the conformal relation between de Sitter and Minkowski space. A special attention is paid to new effects arising in spacetimes which, like de Sitter space, have spacelike conformal infinities. Under the presence of particle and event horizons, purely retarded fields (appropriately defined) become necessarily singular or even cannot be constructed at the "creation light cones" -- future light cones of the "points" at which the sources "ent…
We study the vacuum polarization of a massive scalar field $ϕ$ with arbitrary coupling to gravity in pointlike global monopole spacetime. Using Schwinger-DeWitt proper time formalism, we calculate the vacuum expectation value $<ϕ^{2}>$, when the Compton length of the quantum field is much less than the characteristic radius of the curvature of the background geometry, and we can ignore nonlocal contributions. Explicit analytic expressions are obtained for a general curvature coupling parameter, and specified to the more physical cases of minimal and conformal coupling. Comparing the leading te…

We argue that a $SO(d)$ magnetic monopole in an asymptotically AdS space-time is dual to a $d$-dimensional strongly coupled system in a solid state. In light of this, it would be remiss of us not to dub such a field configuration $solidon$. In the presence of mixed boundary conditions, a solidon spontaneously breaks translations (among many other symmetries) and gives rise to Goldstone excitations on the boundary$-$the phonons of the solid. We derive the quadratic action for the boundary phonons in the probe limit and show that, when the mixed boundary conditions preserve conformal symmetry, t…
The energy density of a conformally invariant scalar field around a cosmic string is estimated by the WKB method. This approach reproduces the precise value obtained by the other authors using the exact mode-sum method or the method of mirror images. The approximation is also in good agreement with the exact result in the three-dimensional case. We also evaluate the energy density of a conformally invariant scalar field around a global monopole by the same way and find the known result again.
Gravitation is described in the context of a dilatonic theory that is conformally related to general relativity. All dimensionless ratios of fundamental dimensional quantities, e.g. particle masses and the Planck mass, as well as the relative strengths of the fundamental interactions, are fixed constants. An interplay between the positive energy density associated with relativistic matter (and possibly with negative spatial curvature) and the negative energy associated with dynamical dilaton phase results in a non-singular, flat cosmological model with no horizon, and -- as a direct consequenc…
We build upon previous investigation of the one-dimensional conformal symmetry of the Friedman-Lema\^ itre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmology of a free scalar field and make it explicit through a reformulation of the theory at the classical level in terms of a manifestly $\textrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-invariant action principle. The new tool is a canonical transformation of the cosmological phase space to write it in terms of a spinor, i.e. a pair of complex variables that transform under the fundamental representation of $\textrm{SU}(1,1)\sim\textrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$. The resulting FLRW Hamilton…
We consider the possibility of describing the Higgs effect in unified theories without the Higgs potential in the presence of the Einstein gravity with the conformal gravity-scalar coupling under the assumption of homogeneous matter distribution. The scalar field values can be found from the Friedmann equations for the homogeneous Universe. The considered cosmological mechanism solves the vacuum density problem (we got $ρ_ϕ^{Cosmic}=10^{-34}ρ_{cr}$ instead of $ρ_ϕ^{Higgs}=10^{54}ρ_{cr}$),and exludes the monopole creation and the domain walls.
As a low energy effective field theory, classical General Relativity receives an infrared relevant modification from the conformal trace anomaly of the energy-momentum tensor of massless, or nearly massless, quantum fields. The local form of the effective action associated with the trace anomaly is expressed in terms of a dynamical scalar field that couples to the conformal factor of the spacetime metric, allowing it to propagate over macroscopic distances. Linearized around flat spacetime, this semi-classical EFT admits scalar gravitational wave solutions in addition to the transversely polar…
The problem of two stiff fluids (energy density = pressure) moving radially in spherical symmetry is treated. The metric ansatz is chosen spherically symmetric, conformally static with a multiplicative separation of variables. The first fluid is described mathematically via a massless scalar field. The coordinate system is chosen comoving with the second fluid which the separation of variables requires to be stiff too. The fluids are interacting only gravitationally and their energy momentum tensors are separately conserved. The Einstein equations are reduced to a single nonlinear ODE of secon…
A conformal coupling of the metric in the Jordan frame to the energy-momentum tensor, screens the scalar field gravitational coupling strength $G$ in modified gravity (MOG). The scalar field acquires a mass which depends on the local matter density: the scalar field particle is massive for the Sun and earth, where the density is high compared to low density environments in cosmology and astrophysics. Together with the screening of the vector field $ϕ_μ$, this guarantees that solar system tests of gravity are satisfied. The conformal metric is coupled to the electromagnetic matter field and ene…
We show how a nearly massless scalar field conformally and disformally coupled to matter can affect the dynamics of two bodies in their inspiralling phase before merging. We discuss both the conservative dynamics, e.g. how the energy of the bound system is corrected by the conformal and disformal interactions, and the dissipative part where scalars and gravitons are emitted. The first disformal correction to the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann Lagrangian is obtained using both the Fokker method relying on the equations of motion and an Effective Field Theory approach using Feynman diagrams. This lead…
We consider how a nearly massless scalar field conformally and disformally coupled to matter can affect the dynamics of gravitationally interacting bodies. We focus on the case of two interacting objects and we obtain the effective metric driving the dynamics of the two body system when reduced to one body in the centre of mass frame. We then concentrate on the case of a light particle in the scalar and gravitational fields generated by a heavy object and find the effects of the conformal and disformal couplings on the body's trajectory such as the advance of perihelion and the Shapiro time de…
