The new setup of the CODALEMA experiment installed at the Radio Observatory in Nancay, France, is described. It includes broadband active dipole antennas and an extended and upgraded particle detector array. The latter gives access to the air shower energy, allowing us to compute the efficiency of the radio array as a function of energy. We also observe a large asymmetry in counting rates between showers coming from the North and the South in spite of the symmetry of the detector. The observed asymmetry can be interpreted as a signature of the geomagnetic origin of the air shower radio emission. A simple linear dependence of the electric field with respect to vxB is used which reproduces the angular dependencies of the number of radio events and their electric polarity.
Since 2003, significant efforts have been devoted to the understanding of the radio emission of extensive air shower in the range [20-200] MHz. Despite some studies led until the early nineties, the [1-10] MHz band has remained unused for 20 years. However, it has been measured by some pioneering experiments that extensive air shower emit a strong electric field in this band and that there is evidence of a large increase in the amplitude of the radio pulse at lower frequencies. The EXTASIS experiment, located within the Nançay Radioastronomy Observatory and supported by the CODALEMA experiment…
Since 2002, the CODALEMA experiment located within the Nançay Radio Observatory studies the ultra-high energy cosmic rays (above 10^{17} eV) arriving in the Earth atmosphere. These cosmic rays interact with the component of the atmosphere, inducing an extensive air shower (EAS) composed mainly of charged particles (electrons and positrons). During the development of the shower in the atmosphere, these charged particles in movement generate a fast electric field transient (a few nanoseconds to a few tens of ns), detected at ground by CODALEMA with dedicated radio antennas over a wide frequency …

We show that coherent transition radiation from the electrically-neutral transverse geomagnetic current (CTR- GM) in a cosmic-ray air shower provides a natural, standard model, explanation to the recent ``anomalous'' events observed by the ANITA detector. We demonstrate that for zenith angles less than roughly 70 degrees, combined with high surface elevation, the inclusion of CTR-GM can significantly alter the emitted electric field from a cosmic-ray air shower. CTR-GM therefore has to be included in radio emission models to provide a full description of the radio emission from a high-energy c…
Cosmic rays are messengers from highly energetic events in the Universe. These rare ultra-high-energy particles can be detected efficiently and in an affordable way using large arrays of radio antennas. Linearly polarized geomagnetic emission is the dominant emission mechanism produced when charged particles in air showers get deflected in the Earth's magnetic field. The sub-dominant Askaryan emission is radially polarized and produced due to the time-varying negative-charge excess in the shower front. The relative amplitude of these two emission components depends on various air shower parame…
Lateral distributions of electrons in air showers initiated by photons of ultra high energies ($10^{18}-10^{22}$ eV) obtained on the basis of numerical solution of adjoint cascade equations are presented. An extended analysis has been made considering separately the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect and the interaction of photons and electrons with the geomagnetic field (GMF) with respect to the scaling formalism for lateral distributions. It is shown that one-parametric scaling description of the lateral distribution of electrons remains valid up to the highest energies considering the L…
The effect of the geomagnetic Lorentz force on the muon component of extensive air shower (EAS) has been studied in a Monte Carlo generated simulated data sample. This geomagnetic field affects the paths of muons in an EAS, causing a local contrast or polar asymmetry in the abundance of positive and negative muons about the shower axis. The asymmetry can be approximately expressed as a function of transverse separation between the positive and negative muons barycentric positions in the EAS through opposite quadrants across the shower core in the shower front plane. In the present study, it is…
The distribution of the muon content of highly inclined Monte Carlo cosmic ray showers is affected by the influence of Earth's geomagnetic field. It is found that the shapes of the positive and negative muon distributions get affected/modified by the influence of the Earth's geomagnetic field. Such a correlation between the earth's geomagnetic activity and the cosmic ray (CR) air shower muons is found sensitive to the primary cosmic ray mass composition.
Radio emission in atmospheric showers is currently interpreted in terms of radiation due to the deviation of the charged particles in the magnetic field of the Earth and to the charge excess (Askaryan effect). Each of these mechanisms has a distinctive polarization. The complex signal patterns can be qualitatively explained as the interference (superposition) of the fields induced by each mechanism. In this work we explicitly and quantitatively test a simple phenomenological model based on this idea. The model is constructed by isolating each of the two components at the simulation level and b…
The paper aims to explore the asymmetry of the muon content of non-vertical and very high energy Monte Carlo showers due to the influence of Earth's geomagnetic field. Simulations have shown that the geomagnetic field modifies the trajectories of muons in a shower producing a polar asymmetry in the density/number of positive and negative muons in the shower front plane. The asymmetry is quantified by a transverse separation between the positive and negative muons barycentric positions through opposite quadrants across the shower core. The dependence of this transverse muon barycenter separatio…
Development of a radio-detection method array for the observation of ultra-high energy neutrino induced showers
A simulation study of the energy released by extensive air showers in the form of MHz radiation is performed using the CoREAS simulation code. We develop an efficient method to extract this radiation energy from air-shower simulations. We determine the longitudinal profile of the radiation energy release and compare it to the longitudinal profile of the energy deposit by the electromagnetic component of the air shower. We find that the radiation energy corrected for the geometric dependence of the geomagnetic emission scales quadratically with the energy in the electromagnetic component of the…
Based on extensive air shower simulations it is shown that the electron distributions with respect to the two angles, determining electron direction at a given shower age, for a fixed electron energy and lateral distance, are universal. It means that the distributions do not depend on the primary particle energy or mass (thus, neither on the interaction model), shower zenith angle or shower to shower fluctuations, if they are taken at the same shower age. Together with previous work showing the universality of the distributions of the electron energy, of the lateral distance (integrated over a…
Autonomous radio-detection, i.e., detection of air-showers with standalone radio arrays, is one of the major technical challenges to overcome for the next generation astroparticle detectors. In this context, we study polarisation signatures of simulated radio signals to perform an identification of the associated air-showers initiated by cosmic-rays and neutrinos. We compare the two sources of radio emission (the charge excess and geomagnetic) and show that the former is almost negligible for inclined (zenith angle $>65^{\circ}$) cosmic-ray air-showers. This provides an efficient background re…
This review provides an introduction to the radio emission by particle cascades, an overview on the various experiments, and explains methods for the radio measurement of air-shower properties. Furthermore, potential applications of the radio technique in high-energy astroparticle physics are discussed. Due to the successful operation of digital radio experiments and due to the improved quantitative understanding of the emission, radio detection is back on the list of promising techniques for extensive air showers. With a threshold of about 100 PeV radio detectors are particularly useful to st…

The ANtarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) long-duration balloon payload searches for Askaryan radio emission from ultra-high-energy ($>10^{18}$ eV) neutrinos interacting in Antarctic ice. ANITA is also sensitive to geomagnetic radio emission from extensive air showers (EAS). This talk summarizes recently released results from the third flight of ANITA, which flew during the 2014-2015 Austral summer. The most sensitive search from ANITA-III identified one neutrino candidate with an a priori background estimate of 0.7$^{+0.5}_{-0.3}$. When combined with previous flights, ANITA sets the b…
We use CoREAS simulations to study the ratio of geomagnetic and Askaryan radio emission from cosmic-ray air showers at the location of the South Pole. The fraction of Askaryan emission relative to the total emission is determined by the polarization of the radio signal at the time of its peak amplitude. We find that the relative Askaryan fraction has a radial dependence increasing with the distance from the shower axis -- with a plateau around the Cherenkov ring. We further find that the Askaryan fraction depends on shower parameters like zenith angle and the distance to the shower maximum. Wh…
The footprint of radio emission from extensive air showers is known to exhibit asymmetries due to the superposition of geomagnetic and charge-excess radiation. For inclined air showers a geometric early-late effect disturbs the signal distribution further. Correcting CoREAS simulations for these asymmetries reveals an additional disturbance in the signal distribution of highly inclined showers in atmospheres with a realistic refractive index profile. This additional apparent asymmetry in fact arises from a systematic displacement of the radio-emission footprint with respect to the Monte-Carlo …

We present a reconstruction algorithm for extensive air showers with zenith angles between 65$^\circ$ and 85$^\circ$ measured with radio antennas in the 30-80 MHz band. Our algorithm is based on a signal model derived from CoREAS simulations which explicitly takes into account the asymmetries introduced by the superposition of charge-excess and geomagnetic radiation as well as by early-late effects. We exploit correlations among fit parameters to reduce the dimensionality and thus ensure stability of the fit procedure. Our approach reaches a reconstruction efficiency near 100% with an intrinsi…
We show that the energy-weighted angular (zenith, azimuth) distribution of extensive air showers (EAS), produced by Ultra High Energy (UHE) cosmic rays at the Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO), has a thrust axis almost transverse to the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), with a thrust value $Tp \geq 0.64$ ( where 1.0 means a perfect alignment and 0.5 isotropy). This behavior strongly suggests an effect of the IMF on the charged shower particles, producing additional lateral scattering. We discuss the weakening of the Earth's magnetic field during geomagnetic storms (30\% of observational time) …
We investigate features of the lateral distribution function (LDF) of the radio signal emitted by cosmic ray air-showers with primary energies $> 0.1$~EeV and its connection to air-shower parameters such as energy and shower maximum using CoREAS simulations made for the configuration of the Tunka-Rex antenna array. Taking into account all significant contributions to the total radio emission, such as by the geomagnetic effect, the charge excess, and the atmospheric refraction we parameterize the radio LDF. This parameterization is two-dimensional and has several free parameters. The large numb…
