We consider non-interacting multi-qubit systems as controllable probes of an environment of defects/impurities modelled as a composite spin-boson environment. The spin-boson environment consists of a small number of quantum-coherent two-level fluctuators (TLFs) damped by independent bosonic baths. A master equation of the Lindblad form is derived for the probe-plus-TLF system. We discuss how correlation measurements in the probe system encode information about the environment structure and could be exploited to efficiently discriminate between different experimental preparation techniques, with particular focus on the quantum correlations (entanglement) that build up in the probe as a result of the TLF-mediated interaction. We also investigate the harmful effects of the composite spin-boson environment on initially prepared entangled bipartite qubit states of the probe and on entangling gate operations. Our results offer insights in the area of quantum computation using superconducting devices, where defects/impurities are believed to be a major source of decoherence.
We investigate multi-boson interference. A Hamiltonian is presented that treats pairs of bosons as a single composite boson. This Hamiltonian allows two pairs of bosons to interact as if they were two single composite bosons. We show that this leads to the composite bosons exhibiting novel interference effects such as Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. We then investigate generalizations of the formalism to the case of interference between two general composite bosons. Finally, we show how one can realize interference between composite bosons in the two atom Dicke model.
We provide evidence for several novel phases in the dilute limit of rotating BECs. By exact calculation of wavefunctions and energies for small numbers of particles, we show that the states near integer angular momentum per particle are best considered condensates of composite entities, involving vortices and atoms. We are led to this result by explicit comparison with a description purely in terms of vortices. Several parallels with the fractional quantum Hall effect emerge, including the presence of the Pfaffian state.
The composite character of two-fermion bosons manifests itself in the interference of many composites as a deviation from the ideal bosonic behavior. A state of many composite bosons can be represented as a superposition of different numbers of perfect bosons and fermions, which allows us to provide the full Hong-Ou-Mandel-like counting statistics of interfering composites. Our theory quantitatively relates the deviation from the ideal bosonic interference pattern to the entanglement of the fermions within a single composite boson.
Composite bosons made of two bosonic constituents exhibit deviations from ideal bosonic behavior due to their substructure. This deviation is reflected by the normalization ratio of the quantum state of N composites. We find a set of saturable, efficiently evaluable bounds for this indicator, which quantifies the bosonic behavior of composites via the entanglement of their constituents. We predict an abrupt transition between ordinary and exaggerated bosonic behavior in a condensate of two-boson composites.
We study statistical signatures of composite bosons made of two fermions using a new many-body approach. Extending number-states to composite bosons, two-particle correlations as well as the dispersion of the probability distribution are analyzed. We show that the particle composite nature reduces the anti-bunching effect predicted for elementary bosons. Furthermore, the probability distribution exhibits a dispersion which is greater for composite bosons than for elementary bosons. This dispersion corresponds to the one of sub-Poissonian processes, as for a quantum state, but, unlike its eleme…
We examine the influence of the Pauli exclusion principle on the scattering properties of composite bosons (cobosons) made of two fermions, such as the exciton quasiparticle. The scattering process incorporates boson-phonon interactions that arise due to lattice vibrations. Composite boson scattering rates increase with the entanglement between the two fermionic constituents, which comes with a larger number of available single-fermion states. An important role is played by probabilities associated with accommodating an incoming boson among the remaining unoccupied Schmidt modes in the initial…
We consider a composite particle formed by two fermions or two bosons. We discover that composite behavior is deeply related to the quantum entanglement between the constituent particles. By analyzing the properties of creation and annihilation operators, we show that bosonic character emerges if the constituent particles become strongly entangled. Such a connection is demonstrated explicitly in a class of two-particle wave functions.
In our two preceding papers we studied bipartite composite boson (or quasiboson) systems through their realization in terms of deformed oscillators. Therein, the entanglement characteristics such as the entanglement entropy and purity were found and expressed, for both one-quasiboson and more complex states, through the parameter of deformation. In this work we initiate an analogous study of composite fermions for two major cases: (i) "boson + fermion" composites; (ii) "deformed-boson + fermion" composites. Both the entanglement entropy and purity of composite fermions are dealt with, their de…
We study the quantum dynamics of conversion of composite bosons into fermionic fragment species with increasing densities of bound fermion pairs using the open quantum system approach. The Hilbert space of $N$-state-function is decomposed into a composite boson subspace and an orthogonal fragment subspace of quasi-free fermions that enlarges as the composite boson constituents deviate from ideal boson commutation relations. The tunneling dynamics of coupled composite boson states in confined systems is examined, and the appearance of exceptional points under experimentally testable conditions …
We present a systematic analysis on coherent states of composite bosons consisting of two distinguishable particles. By defining an effective composite boson (coboson) annihilation operator, we derive its eigenstate and commutator. Depending on the elementary particles comprising the composite particles, we gauge the resemblance between this eigenstate and traditional coherent states through typical measures of nonclassicality, such as quadrature variances and Mandel's Q parameter. Furthermore, we show that the eigenstate of the coboson annihilation operator is useful in estimating the maximum…
An even number of fermions can behave in a bosonic way. The simplest scenario involves two fermions which can form a single boson. But four fermions can either behave as two bipartite bosons or further assemble into a single four-partite bosonic molecule. In general, for 2N fermions there are many possible arrangements into composite bosons. The question is: what determines which fermionic arrangement is going to be realized in a given situation and can such arrangement be considered truly bosonic? This work aims to find the answer to the above question. We propose an entanglement-based method…
Two bound, entangled fermions form a composite boson, which can be treated as an elementary boson as long as the Pauli principle does not affect the behavior of many such composite bosons. The departure of ideal bosonic behavior is quantified by the normalization ratio of multi-composite-boson states. We derive the two-fermion-states that extremize the normalization ratio for a fixed single-fermion purity P, and establish general tight bounds for this indicator. For very small purities, P<1/N^2, the upper and lower bounds converge, which allows to quantify accurately the departure from perfect…
We build upon work by C. K. Law [Phys. Rev. A 71, 034306 (2005)] to show in general that the entanglement between two fermions largely determines the extent to which the pair behaves like an elementary boson. Specifically, we derive upper and lower bounds on a quantity that governs the bosonic character of a pair of fermions when N such pairs approximately share the same wavefunction. Our bounds depend on the purity of the single-particle density matrix, an indicator of entanglement, and demonstrate that if the entanglement is sufficiently strong, the quantity in question approaches its ideal …
The theory of composite bosons (cobosons) made of two fermions [Phys. Rev. A 71, 034306 (2005), Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 260403 (2012)] converges to ordinary structureless bosons in the limit of infinitely strong entanglement between the fermionic constituents. For finite entanglement, the annihilation operator $\hat c$ of a composite boson couples the $N$-coboson Fock-state not only to the $(N-1)$-coboson state -- as for ordinary bosons --, but also to a component which is orthogonal to the Fock-state ladder of cobosons. Coupling with states orthogonal to the Fock ladder arises also in dynamical…
Composite particles made of two fermions can be treated as ideal elementary bosons as long as the constituent fermions are sufficiently entangled. In that case, the Pauli principle acting on the parts does not jeopardise the bosonic behaviour of the whole. An indicator for bosonic quality is the composite boson normalisation ratio $χ_{N+1}/χ_{N}$ of a state of $N$ composites. This quantity is prohibitively complicated to compute exactly for realistic two-fermion wavefunctions and large composite numbers $N$. Here, we provide an efficient characterisation in terms of the purity $P$ and the larg…
It was suggested that two entangled fermions can behave like a single boson and that the bosonic quality is proportional to the degree of entanglement between the two particles. The relation between bosonic quality and entanglement is quite natural if one takes into account the fact that entanglement appears in bound states of interacting systems. However, entanglement can still be present in spatially separated subsystems that do not interact anymore. These systems are often a subject of studies on quantum nonlocality and foundations of quantum physics. Here, we ask whether an entangled spati…
We evaluate the binding energies of systems of bosonic and fermionic particles on the basis of the quantum Szilard engine, which confers an energetic value to information and entropy changes. We extend treatment of the quantum information thermodynamic operation of the Szilard engine to its non-trivial role in Bose-Einstein condensation of the light mass polariton quasiparticle, and binding of large multi-excitonic complexes, and note the same order of magnitudes of exchange and extraction energies in these disparate systems. We examine the gradual decline of a defined information capacitive e…
Bipartite composite boson (quasiboson) systems, which admit realization in terms of deformed oscillators, were considered in our previous paper from the viewpoint of entanglement characteristics. These characteristics, including entanglement entropy and purity, were expressed through the relevant deformation parameter for different quasibosonic states. On the other hand, it is of interest to present the entanglement entropy and likewise the purity as function of energy for those states. In this work, the corresponding dependencies are found for different states of composite bosons realized by …
Particles made of two fermions can in many cases be treated as elementary bosons, but the conditions for this treatment to be valid are nontrivial. The so-called "coboson formalism" is a powerful tool to tackle compositeness effects relevant for instance for exciton physics and ultracold atomic dimers. A key element of this theory is an ansatz for the ground state of N pairs, built from the single-pair ground state combined with the exclusion principle. We show that this ansatz can fail in one-dimensional systems which fulfill the conditions expected to make the ansatz valid. Nevertheless, we …
Composite bosons (or quasibosons), as recently proven, are realizable by deformed oscillators and due to that can be effectively treated as particles of nonstandard statistics (deformed bosons). This enables us to study quasiboson states and their inter-component entanglement aspects using the well developed formalism of deformed oscillators. We prove that the internal entanglement characteristics for single two-component quasiboson are determined completely by the parameter(s) of deformation. The bipartite entanglement characteristics are generalized and calculated for arbitrary multi-quasibo…
We predict the existence of high frequency modes in the interference pattern of two condensates made of fermionic-atom dimers. These modes, which result from fermion exchanges between condensates, constitute a striking signature of the dimer composite nature. From the 2-coboson spatial correlation function, that we derive analytically, and the Shiva diagrams that visualize many-body effects specific to composite bosons, we identify the physical origin of these high frequency modes and determine the conditions to see them experimentally by using bound fermionic-atom pairs trapped on optical lat…
We analyze a system of fermions in a one-dimensional harmonic trap with attractive delta-interactions between different fermions species, as an approximate description of experiments involving atomic dimers. We solve the problem of two fermion pairs numerically using the so-called ''coboson formalism'' as an alternative to techniques which are based on the single-particle basis. This allows us to explore the strongly bound regime, approaching the limit of infinite attraction in which the composite particles behave as hard-core bosons. Our procedure is computationally inexpensive and illustrate…
The concept of quasi-bosons or composite bosons (like mesons, excitons etc.) has a wide range of potential physical applications. Even composed of two pure fermions, the quasi-boson creation and annihilation operators satisfy non-standard commutation relations. It is natural to try to realize the quasi-boson operators by the operators of deformed (nonlinear) oscillator, the latter constituting widely studied field of modern quantum physics. In this paper, it is proved that the deformed oscillators which realize quasi-boson operators in a consistent way really exist. The conditions for such rea…
We show that an ansatz based on independent composite bosons [Phys. Rep. 463, 215 (2008)] accurately describes the condensate fraction of molecular Bose-Einstein condensates in ultracold Fermi gases. The entanglement between the fermionic constituents of a single Feshbach molecule then governs the many-particle statistics of the condensate, from the limit of strong interaction to close to unitarity. This result strengthens the role of entanglement as the indispensable driver of composite-boson behavior. The condensate fraction of fermion pairs at zero temperature that we compute matches excell…
We consider composite bosons (cobosons) comprised of two elementary particles, fermions or bosons, in an entangled state. First, we show that the effective number of cobosons implies the level of correlation between the two constituent particles. For the maximum level of correlation, the effective number of cobosons is the same as the total number of cobosons, which can exhibit the original Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). In this context, we study a model of BEC for indistinguishable cobosons with a controllable parameter, i.e., entanglement between the two constituent particles. We find tha…
The quon algebra gives a description of particles, ``quons,'' that are neither fermions nor bosons. The parameter $q$ attached to a quon labels a smooth interpolation between bosons, for which $q = +1$, and fermions, for which $q = -1$. Wigner and Ehrenfest and Oppenheimer showed that a composite system of identical bosons and fermions is a fermion if it contains an odd number of fermions and is a boson otherwise. Here we generalize this result to composite systems of identical quons. We find $q_{composite}=q_{constituent}^{n^2}$ for a system of $n$ identical quons. This result reduces to the …
