We consider discretized gravity in 4+2 dimensions compactified on a disk of constant negative curvature. The curvature of the disk avoids the presence of dangerous ultra-light scalar modes but comes also along with a high multiplicity of states potentially jeopardizing a good strong-coupling behavior of the discretized theory. We demonstrate that for Standard Model matter propagating on the five-dimensional boundary submanifold of the disk, the strong coupling scale, as seen by an observer, can be parametrically larger than the local Planck scale. As a consequence, we obtain a description of weakly coupled discretized gravity on the boundary that can be compared with the continuum theory all the way up to the effective five-dimensional Planck scale.
We propose a toy model of quantum gravity in two dimensions with Euclidean signature. The model is given by a kind of discretization which is different from the dynamical triangulation. We show that there exists a continuum limit and we can calculate some physical quantities such as the expectation value of the area, that is, the volume of the two dimensional euclidean space-time. We also consider the extensions of the model to higher dimensions.
A unified theory of the non-Abelian gauge interactions with gravity in the framework of a discretized Kaluaza-Kleine theory is constructed with a modified Dirac operator and wedge product. All the couplings of chiral spinors to the non-Abelian gauge fields emerge naturally as components of the couplings of the chiral spinors to the generalized gravity together with some new interactions. In particular, the currently prevalent gravity-QCD-quark and gravity-electroweak-quark-lepton models are shown to follow as special cases of the general framework.
In this paper we consider very weakly interacting and ultra light scalar and pseudoscalar dark matter candidates. We show that quantum gravity has important implications for such models and that the masses of the singlet scalar and pseudoscalar fields must be heavier than $3\times 10^{-3}$ eV. However, if they are gauged, their masses could be much lighter and as light as $10^{-22}\, {\rm eV}$. The existence of new gauge forces in the dark matter sector can thus be probed by atomic clocks or quantum sensors experiments.
As is well known, both massive gravity and bigravity exhibit the linear van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov (vDVZ) discontinuity that is cured classically by the nonlinear Vainshtein mechanism due to certain low scale strongly coupled interactions. Here we show how both the vDVZ and strong coupling problems can be removed by embedding 4D covariant massive gravity into a certain 5D warped geometry. The 4D theory is a nonlinear strongly coupled massive gravity, that is being coupled to a 5D bulk theory that generates a bulk graviton mass via a one loop diagram. This induced mass leads to an additional 4D k…
Confining gauge theories contain glueballs and mesons with arbitrary spin, and these particles become metastable at large $N$. However, metastable higher spin particles, when coupled to gravity, are in conflict with causality. This tension can be avoided only if the gravitational interaction is accompanied by interactions involving other higher spin states well below the Planck scale $M_{\rm pl}$. These higher spin states can come from either the QCD sector or the gravity sector, but both these resolutions have some surprising implications. For example, QCD states can resolve the problem since…
We consider gauge/gravity correspondence for general Dp-branes with $0\le p\le 4$, namely, the duality between the (p+1)-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and superstring theory on the near-horizon limit of the Dp-brane solution. It has been known that in the large N gauge theory at zero temperature and strong 't Hooft coupling, the two-point functions of operators corresponding to supergravity modes obey power-law, with a power different from the free-field value when $p\neq 3$. In this work, we show that the free-field result of gauge theory can be reproduced from the bu…
Theories such as massive Galileons and massive gravity can satisfy the presently known improved positivity bounds provided they are weakly coupled. We discuss the form of the EFT Lagrangian for a weakly coupled UV completion of massive gravity which closely parallels the massive Galileon, and perform the power counting of corrections to the scattering amplitude and the positivity bounds. The Vainshtein mechanism which is central to the phenomenological viability of massive gravity is entirely consistent with weak coupling since it is classical in nature. We highlight that the only implication …
We study the causal structure of a class of weakly nonlocal gravitational theories (eventually coupled to matter) that are compatible with perturbative unitarity and finiteness at quantum level. In particular, we show that in nonlocal quantum gravity a Shapiro's time advance never occurs. Moreover, we provide a recipe to construct a general ultraviolet complete gravitational theory coupled to matter (with or without supersymmetry) compatible with causality. Therefore, nonlocal gravity is consistent with causality, as well as string theory.
We consider a general system with weakly broken time and translation symmetries. We assume the system also possesses a $U(1)$ symmetry which is not only weakly broken, but is anomalous. We use the second order chiral quasi-hydrodynamics to compute the magneto-conductivities in the system in the presence of a weak magnetic field. Analogous to electrical and thermoelectric conductivities, it turns out that the thermal conductivity is identified with a coefficient which depends on the mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly. By applying our general formulas to a free system of Weyl fermions at low temp…
