We present VLT intermediate resolution spectroscopy of UY Vol, the optical counterpart of the LMXB X-ray burster EXO 0748-676. By using Doppler tomography we detect narrow components within the broad He II 4542 A, 4686 A and 5412 A emission lines. The phase, velocity and narrowness of these lines are consistent with their arising from the irradiated hemisphere of the donor star, as has been observed in a number of LMXBs. Under this assumption we provide the first dynamical constraints on the stellar masses in this system. In particular, we measure K_2>K_em = 300 +/- 10 km/s. Using this value we derive 1 M_sun < M_1 < 2.4 M_sun and 0.11 < q < 0.28. We find M_1 > 1.5 M_sun for the case of a main sequence companion star. Our results are consistent with the presence of a massive neutron star as has been suggested by Ozel (2006), although we cannot discard the canonical value of ~1.4 M_sun.
We intended to measure the radial velocity curve of the supergiant companion to the eclipsing high mass X-ray binary pulsar EXO1722-363 and hence determine the stellar masses of the components. We used a set of archival K$_{\rm s}$-band infrared spectra of the counterpart to EXO1722-363 obtained using ISAAC on the VLT, and cross-correlated them in order to measure the radial velocity of the star. The resulting radial velocity curve has a semi-amplitude of $24.5 \pm 5.0$ km s$^{-1}$. When combined with other measured parameters of the system, this yields masses in the range 1.5 $\pm$ 0.4 - 1.6 …
Recently, the neutron star X-ray binary EXO 0748-676 underwent a transition to quiescence. We analyzed an XMM-Newton observation of this source in quiescence, where we fitted the spectrum with two different neutron-star atmosphere models. From the fits we constrained the allowed parameter space in the mass-radius diagram for this source for an assumed range of distances to the system. Comparing the results with different neutron-star equations of state, we constrained the distance to EXO 0748-676. We found that the EOS model 'SQM1' is rejected by the atmosphere model fits for the known distanc…
In this lecture, we give a first introduction to neutron stars, based on fundamental physical principles. After outlining their amazing macroscopic properties, as obtained from observations, we infer the extreme conditions of matter in their interiors. We then describe two crucial physical phenomena which characterize compact stars, gravitational stability of strongly degenerate matter and neutronization of nuclear matter with increasing density, and explain how the formation and properties of neutron stars are a consequence of the extreme compression of matter under gravity. Finally, we descr…
We study the feasibility of detecting exotic cores in merging neutron stars with ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. We focus on models with a sharp nuclear/exotic matter interface, and assume a uniform distribution of neutron stars in the mass range $[1,2] M_\odot$. We find that the existence of exotic cores can be confirmed at the 70% confidence level with as few as several tens of detections. Likewise, with such a sample, we find that some models of exotic cores can be excluded {with high confidence}.
EXO 1745-248 is a transient neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary that resides in the globular cluster Terzan 5. We studied the transient during its quiescent state using 18 Chandra observations of the cluster acquired between 2003 and 2016. We found an extremely variable source, with a luminosity variation in the 0.5-10 keV energy range of $\sim3$ orders of magnitude (between $3\times10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and $2\times10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$) on timescales from years down to only a few days. Using an absorbed power-law model to fit its quiescent spectra, we obtained a typical photon index of $\sim1…
A set of theoretical mass-radius relations for rigidly rotating neutron stars with exotic cores, obtained in various theories of dense matter, is reviewed. Two basic observational constraints are used: the largest measured rotation frequency (716 Hz) and the maximum measured mass ($2\;M_\odot$). Present status of measuring the radii of neutron stars is described. The theory of rigidly rotating stars in general relativity is reviewed and limitations of the slow rotation approximation are pointed out. Mass-radius relations for rotating neutron stars with hyperon and quark cores are illustrated u…
Neutron stars offer the opportunity to study the behaviour of matter at densities and temperatures inaccessible to terrestrial experiments. Gravitational-wave observations of binary neutron star coalescences can constrain the neutron-star equation of state before and after merger. After the neutron star binary merges, hyperons can form in the remnant, changing the behaviour of the neutron-star equation of state. In this study, we use finite-entropy equations of state to show that a post-merger remnant can spin up due to cooling. The magnitude of the spin-up depends on the neutron-star equation…
In late 2008, the quasi-persistent neutron star X-ray transient and eclipsing binary EXO 0748-676 started a transition from outburst to quiescence, after it had been actively accreting for more than 24 years. In a previous work, we discussed Chandra and Swift observations obtained during the first five months after this transition. Here, we report on further X-ray observations of EXO 0748-676, extending the quiescent monitoring to 1.6 years. Chandra and XMM-Newton data reveal quiescent X-ray spectra composed of a soft, thermal component that is well-fitted by a neutron star atmosphere model. A…
The transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary EXO 1745-248, located in the globular cluster Terzan 5, was detected during its quiescent state with Chandra in 2003. The source displayed a 0.5-10 keV X-ray luminosity of Lq ~ 1E33 (D/5.5kpc)^2 erg/s, which was completely dominated by hard non-thermal emission. This is at odds with other non-pulsating neutron stars that typically show detectable soft thermal emission at such quiescent luminosities. Here, we use three additional Chandra observations, performed in 2009 and 2011, to further study the quiescent properties of EXO 1745-248. We find t…
We calculate moment of inertia of neutron star with different exotic constituents such as hyperons and (anti)kaon condensates and study its variation with mass and spin frequency. The sets of equation of state, generated within the framework of relativistic mean field model with density-dependent couplings are adopted for the purpose. We follow the quasi-stationary evolution of rotating stars along the constant rest mass sequences, that varies considerably with different constituents in the equation of state. We also explore the universal relations associated with some of the normalised proper…
X-ray observations of quiescent X-ray binaries have the potential to provide insight into the structure and the composition of neutron stars. EXO 0748-676 had been actively accreting for over 24 yr before its outburst ceased in late 2008. Subsequent X-ray monitoring revealed a gradual decay of the quiescent thermal emission that can be attributed to cooling of the accretion-heated neutron star crust. In this work, we report on new Chandra and Swift observations that extend the quiescent monitoring to ~5 yr post-outburst. We find that the neutron star temperature remained at ~117 eV between 200…
We study the low-frequency timing properties and the spectral state evolution of the transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary EXO 1745-248 using the entire Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array data. We tentatively conclude that EXO 1745-248 is an atoll source, and report the discovery of a ~ 0.45 Hz low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillation and ~ 10 Hz peaked noises. If it is an atoll, this source is unusual because (1) instead of a `C'-like curve, it traced a clear overall clockwise hysteresis curve in each of the colour-colour diagram and the hardness-intensity diagram; …
The pulse profiles of the transient Be/X-ray binary EXO 2030+375 show strong dependence on energy, as well as on its luminosity state, and are asymmetric in shape. We want to identify the emission components of the two magnetic poles in the pulsed emission to understand the geometry of the neutron star and its beam pattern. We utilize a pulse-profile decomposition method that enables us to find two symmetric pulse profiles from the magnetic poles of the neutron star. The symmetry characteristics of these single-pole pulse profiles give information about the position of the magnetic poles of th…
We report the discovery ($20σ$) of kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) at ~ 690 Hz from the transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary EXO 1745-248. We find that this is a lower kHz QPO, and systematically study the time variation of its properties using smaller data segments with and without the shift-and-add technique. The quality (Q) factor occasionally significantly varies within short ranges of frequency and time. A high Q-factor (264.5 +- 38.5) of the QPO is found for a 200 s time segment, which might be the largest value reported in the literature. We argue that an effect…
Explosive astrophysical systems - such as supernovae or compact star binary mergers - provide conditions where exotic degrees of freedom can be populated. Within the covariant density functional theory of nuclear matter we build several general purpose equations of state which, in addition to the baryonic octet, account for $Δ(1232)$ resonance states. The thermodynamic stability of $Δ$-admixed nuclear matter is investigated in the limiting case of vanishing temperature for charge fractions $Y_Q=0.01$ and $Y_Q=0.5$ and wide ranges of the coupling constants to the scalar and vector mesonic field…
X-ray observations of EXO 0748-676 during thermonuclear bursts revealed a set of narrow absorption lines that potentially originate from the stellar photosphere. The identification of these lines with particular atomic transitions led to the measurement of the surface gravitational redshift of the neutron star and to constraints on its mass and radius. However, the recent detection of 552 Hz oscillations at 15% rms amplitude revealed the spin frequency of the neutron star and brought into question the consistency of such a rapid spin with the narrow width of the absorption lines. Here, we calc…
We analyse four XMM-Newton observations of the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary EXO 0748$-$676 in quiescence. We fit the spectra with an absorbed neutron-star atmosphere model, without the need for a high-energy (power-law) component; with a 95 per cent confidence the power-law contributes less than 1 per cent to the total flux of the source in $0.5-10.0$ keV. The fits show significant residuals at around 0.5 keV which can be explained by either a hot gas component around the neutron star or a moderately broad emission line from a residual accretion disc. The temperature of the neutron-star …

The accretion behaviour in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) at low luminosities, especially at <E34 erg/s, is not well known. This is an important regime to study to obtain a complete understanding of the accretion process in LMXBs, and to determine if systems that host neutron stars with accretion-heated crusts can be used probe the physics of dense matter (which requires their quiescent thermal emission to be uncontaminated by residual accretion). Here we examine ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray data obtained when EXO 0748-676, a crust-cooling source, was in quiescence. Our Hubble Space Telescope s…
This article studies the maximum mass limit of the quark star formed after the shock-induced phase transition of a cold neutron star. By employing hadronic and quark equation of state that satisfies the current mass bound, we use combustion adiabat conditions to find such a limit. The combustion adiabat condition results in a local or a global maximum pressure at an intermediate density range. The maximum pressure corresponds to a local or global maximum mass for the phase transformed hybrid star. The phase transition is usually exothermic if we have a local maximum mass. The criteria for exot…

The neutron star low-mass X-ray binary EXO 0748-676 started a transition from outburst to quiescence in August 2008, after more than 24 years of continuous accretion. The return of the source to quiescence has been monitored extensively by several X-ray observatories. Here, we report on four XMM-Newton observations elapsing a period of more than 19 months and starting in November 2008. The X-ray spectra show a soft thermal component which we fit with a neutron star atmosphere model. Only in the first observation do we find a significant second component above ~ 3 keV accounting for ~ 7 % of th…
Observationally, for neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries, so far, the correlation between the radio luminosity $L_{\rm R}$ and the X-ray luminosity $L_{\rm X}$, i.e., $L_{\rm R}\propto L_{\rm X}^β$, has been reasonably well-established only in three sources 4U 1728-34, Aql X-1 and EXO 1745-248 in their hard state. The slope $β$ of the radio/X-ray correlation of the three sources is different, i.e., $β\sim 1.4$ for 4U 1728-34, $β\sim 0.4$ for Aql X-1, and $β\sim 1.6$ for EXO 1745-248. In this paper, for the first time we explain the different radio/X-ray correlation of 4U 1728-34, Aql X-1 and …
There is a growing interest in investigating modified theories of gravity, primarily, with the aim of explaining the universe's accelerated expansion, which has been confirmed by several independent observations. Compact objects, like neutron stars, exhibit strong gravity effects and therefore are used to study modified gravity theories. We use the $f(R)=R+aR^2$ model, where R is the Ricci scalar and $a$ is a free parameter. This model has been studied both perturbatively and non-perturbatively. However, it was found that perturbative methods results in nonphysical solutions for the neutron st…
In this work, we study the effect of differential rotation, finite temperature and strangeness on the quasi stationary sequences of hyper massive neutron stars (HMNS). We generate constant rest mass sequences of differentially rotating and uniformly rotating stars. The nucleonic matter relevant to the star interior is described within the framework of the relativistic mean field model with the DD2 parameter set. We also consider the strange $Λ$ hyperons using the BHB$Λϕ$ equation of state (EoS). Additionally, we probe the behaviour of neutron stars (NS) with these compositions at different tem…
The presence of exotic states of matter in neutron stars (NSs) is currently an open issue in physics. The appearance of muons, kaons, hyperons, and other exotic particles in the inner regions of the NS, favored by energetic considerations, is considered to be an effective mechanism to soften the equation of state (EoS). In the so-called two-families scenario, the softening of the EoS allows for NSs characterized by very small radii, which become unstable and convert into a quark stars (QSs). In the process of conversion of a NS into a QS material can be ablated by neutrinos from the surface of…
We present phase resolved optical spectroscopy and X-ray timing of the neutron star X-ray binary EXO 0748-676 after the source returned to quiescence in the fall of 2008. The X-ray light curve displays eclipses consistent in orbital period, orbital phase and duration with the predictions and measurements before the return to quiescence. Halpha and He I emission lines are present in the optical spectra and show the signature of the orbit of the binary companion, placing a lower limit on the radial velocity semi-amplitude of K2>405 km/s. Both the flux in the continuum and the emission lines show…

The measurement of $1.97 \pm 0.04 M_{solar}$ for PSR J1614-2230 and $2.01 \pm 0.04M_{solar}$ for PSR J0348+0432 puts a strong constraint on the neutron star equation of state and its exotic composition at higher densities. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of exotic equation of state within the observational mass constraint of $2M_{solar}$ in the framework of relativistic mean field model with density-dependent couplings. We particularly study the effect of antikaon condensates in the presence of hyperons on the mass-radius relationship of the neutron star.
Multi-messenger observations of binary neutron star mergers provide a unique opportunity to constrain the dense-matter equation of state. Although it is known from quantum chromodynamics that hadronic matter will undergo a phase transition to exotic forms of matter, e.g., quark matter, the onset density of such a phase transition cannot be computed from first principles. Hence, it remains an open question if such phase transitions occur inside isolated neutron stars or during binary neutron star mergers, or if they appear at even higher densities that are not realized in the Cosmos. In this ar…
We present the results of VLA, ATCA, and Swift XRT observations of the 2015 outburst of the transient neutron star X-ray binary (NSXB), EXO 1745$-$248, located in the globular cluster Terzan 5. Combining (near-) simultaneous radio and X-ray measurements we measure a correlation between the radio and X-ray luminosities of $L_R\propto L_X^β$ with $β=1.68^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$, linking the accretion flow (probed by X-ray luminosity) and the compact jet (probed by radio luminosity). While such a relationship has been studied in multiple black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs), this work marks only the third …
Transient LMXBs that host neutron stars (NSs) provide excellent laboratories for probing the dense matter physics present in NS crusts. During accretion outbursts in LMXBs, exothermic reactions may heat the NS crust, disrupting the crust-core equilibrium. When the outburst ceases, the crust cools to restore thermal equilibrium with the core. Monitoring this evolution allows us to probe the dense matter physics in the crust. Properties of the deeper crustal layers can be probed at later times after the end of the outburst. We report on the unexpected late-time temperature evolution (>2000 days …
This thesis focuses on a variety of active research topics, such as nuclear matter, neutron stars, and phase transition within the framework of the RMF model. We use the previously successful effective field theory-driven Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) and density-dependent RMF (DD-RMF)formalisms for analyzing hadron matter to examine the infinite nuclear matter and neutron stars. The presence of exotic phases such as quarks has been investigated using the MIT Bag model and its variants, such as the vBag model, at various bag constants. The other exotic phases, such as hyperons, have also been …
We present a simple model for electron transport in a possible layer of exotic nuclear clusters (in the so called nuclear pasta layer) between the crust and liquid core of a strongly magnetized neutron star. The electron transport there can be strongly anisotropic and gyrotropic. The anisotropy is produced by different electron effective collision frequencies along and across local symmetry axis in domains of exotic ordered nuclear clusters and by complicated effects of the magnetic field. We also calculate averaged kinetic coefficients in case local domains are freely oriented. Possible appli…
We recommend that the search for exoplanets around binary stars be extended to include X-ray binaries in which the accretor is a white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole. We present a novel idea for detecting planets bound to such mass transfer binaries: we propose that the X-ray light curves of these binaries be inspected for signatures of transiting planets. X-ray transits may be the only way to detect planets around some systems, while providing a complementary approach to optical and/or radio observations in others. Any planets associated with X-ray binaries must be in stable orbits. We co…
Determining the maximum possible neutron star (NS) mass places limits on the equation of state (EoS) of ultra-dense matter. The mass of NSs in low mass X-ray binaries can be determined from the binary mass function, providing independent constraints are placed on both the binary inclination and mass ratio. In eclipsing systems, they relate via the totality duration. EXO 0748-676 is an eclipsing NS low mass X-ray binary with a binary mass function estimated using stellar emission lines from the irradiated face of the companion. The NS mass is thus known as a function of mass ratio. Here we mode…
We report on a detailed analysis of the so-called ~1 Hz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the eclipsing and dipping neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary EXO 0748-676. This type of QPO has previously been shown to have a geometric origin. Our study focuses on the evolution of the QPO as the source moves through the color-color diagram, in which it traces out an atoll-source-like track. The QPO frequency increases from ~0.4 Hz in the hard state to ~25 Hz as the source approaches the soft state. Combining power spectra based on QPO frequency reveals additional features that strongly resemble thos…
We took advantage of the large collecting area and good timing capabilities of the EPIC cameras on-board XMM-Newton to investigate the accretion geometry onto the magnetized neutron star hosted in the high mass X-ray binary EXO 2030+375 during the rise of a source Type-I outburst in 2014. We carried out a timing and spectral analysis of the XMM-Newton observation as function of the neutron star spin phase. We used a phenomenological spectral continuum model comprising the required fluorescence emission lines. Two neutral absorption components are present: one covering fully the source and one …

We investigate the dynamical stability of relativistic, differentially rotating, quasi-toroidal models of neutron stars through hydrodynamical simulations in full general relativity. We find that all quasi-toroidal configurations studied in this work are dynamically unstable against the growth of non-axisymmetric modes. Both one-arm and bar mode instabilities grow during their evolution. We find that very high rest mass configurations collapse to form black holes. Our calculations suggest that configurations whose rest mass is less than the binary neutron star threshold mass for prompt collaps…
We dynamically evolve for the first time dark matter admixed neutron stars with fermionic dark matter. These systems are mixtures of the ordinary nuclear matter of a neutron star and dark matter. To perform our dynamical evolutions, we derive the equations of motion, in conservation form, for spherically symmetric systems with an arbitrary number of perfect fluids. Using finite volume and high-resolution shock-capturing methods, we dynamically evolve the two-fluid case, with the first fluid modeling ordinary matter and the second fluid modeling dark matter. We use our dynamical solutions to st…
Tidal effects in gravitational-wave (GW) observations from binary neutron star mergers have the potential to probe ultra-dense matter and shed light on the unknown nuclear equation of state of neutron stars. Tidal effects in inspiralling neutron star binaries become relevant at GW frequencies of a few hundred Hz and require detectors with exquisite high-frequency sensitivity. Third generation GW detectors such as the Einstein Telescope or Cosmic Explorer will be particularly sensitive in this high-frequency regime, allowing us to probe neutron star tides beyond the adiabatic approximation. Her…
