We introduce a new and efficient numerical method for multicriterion optimal control and single criterion optimal control under integral constraints. The approach is based on extending the state space to include information on a "budget" remaining to satisfy each constraint; the augmented Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman PDE is then solved numerically. The efficiency of our approach hinges on the causality in that PDE, i.e., the monotonicity of characteristic curves in one of the newly added dimensions. A semi-Lagrangian "marching" method is used to approximate the discontinuous viscosity solution efficiently. We compare this to a recently introduced "weighted sum" based algorithm for the same problem. We illustrate our method using examples from flight path planning and robotic navigation in the presence of friendly and adversarial observers.
This article focuses on the optimization of a complex system which is composed of several subsystems. On the one hand, these subsystems are subject to multiple objectives, local constraints as well as local variables, and they are associated with an own, subsystem-dependent decision maker. On the other hand, these subsystems are interconnected to each other by global variables or linking constraints. Due to these interdependencies, it is in general not possible to simply optimize each subsystem individually to improve the performance of the overall system. This article introduces a formal grap…

This paper investigates the problem of straight-line path following for magnetic helical microswimmers. The control objective is to make the helical microswimmer to converge to a straight line without violating the step-out frequency constraint. The proposed feedback control solution is based on an optimal decision strategy (ODS) that is cast as a trust-region subproblem (TRS), i.e., a quadratic program over a sphere. The ODS-based control strategy minimizes the difference between the microrobot velocity and an integral line-of-sight (ILOS)-based reference vector field while respecting the mag…
We consider optimal control problems for discrete-time random dynamical systems, finding unique perturbations that provoke maximal responses of statistical properties of the system. We treat systems whose transfer operator has an $L^2$ kernel, and we consider the problems of finding (i) the infinitesimal perturbation maximising the expectation of a given observable and (ii) the infinitesimal perturbation maximising the spectral gap, and hence the exponential mixing rate of the system. Our perturbations are either (a) perturbations of the kernel or (b) perturbations of a deterministic map subje…
We consider the problem of zeroing an error output of a nonlinear discrete-time system in the presence of constant exogenous disturbances, subject to hard convex constraints on the input signal. The design specification is formulated as a variational inequality, and we adapt a forward-backward splitting algorithm to act as an integral controller which ensures that the input constraints are met at each time step. We establish a low-gain stability result for the closed-loop system when the plant is exponentially stable, generalizing previously known results for integral control of discrete-time …
In the simplest case, we obtain a general solution to a problem of minimizing an integral of a nondecreasing right continuous stochastic process from zero to some nonnegative random variable tau, under the constraints that for some nonnegative random variable T, tau is between zero and T a.s. and the expected value of tau is some alpha. The nondecreasing process and T are allowed to be dependent. In fact a more general setup involving sigma-finite measures, rather than just probability measures is considered and some consequences for families of stochastic processes are given as special cases.…
Isoperimetric problems consist in minimizing or maximizing a cost functional subject to an integral constraint. In this work, we present two fractional isoperimetric problems where the Lagrangian depends on a combined Caputo derivative of variable fractional order and we present a new variational problem subject to a holonomic constraint. We establish necessary optimality conditions in order to determine the minimizers of the fractional problems. The terminal point in the cost integral, as well the terminal state, are considered to be free, and we obtain corresponding natural boundary conditio…
Conic optimization is the minimization of a differentiable convex objective function subject to conic constraints. We propose a novel primal-dual first-order method for conic optimization, named proportional-integral projected gradient method (PIPG). PIPG ensures that both the primal-dual gap and the constraint violation converge to zero at the rate of \(O(1/k)\), where \(k\) is the number of iterations. If the objective function is strongly convex, PIPG improves the convergence rate of the primal-dual gap to \(O(1/k^2)\). Further, unlike any existing first-order methods, PIPG also improves th…
A Pontryagin maximum principle for an optimal control problem in three dimensional linearized compressible viscous flows is established using the Ekeland variational principle. The controls are distributed over a bounded domain, while the state variables are subject to a set of constraints and governed by the linearized compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The maximum principle is of integral-type and obtained for minimizers of a tracking-type integral cost functional.
This work concentrates on a class of optimal control problems for semilinear parabolic equations subject to control constraint of the form $\|u(t)\|_{L^1(Ω)} \le γ$ for $t \in (0,T)$. This limits the total control that can be applied to the system at any instant of time. The $L^1$-norm of the constraint leads to sparsity of the control in space, for the time instants when the constraint is active. Due to the non-smoothness of the constraint, the analysis of the control problem requires new techniques. Existence of a solution, first and second order optimality conditions, and regularity of the …
In this paper, we are concerned with optimal control problems evolved on Riemannian manifolds, where the initial and final states satisfy some inequality and equality type constraints, and the control set is a separable metric space. We obtain the second order necessary conditions of integral and quasi-pointwise forms, both of which work for Pontryagin type critical controls and involve the curvature tensor. Also, we apply the condition of integral form to the Bolza problem, where the initial and final states are subject to equality's type constraint.
This thesis presents new mathematical algorithms for the numerical solution of a mathematical problem class called \emph{dynamic optimization problems}. These are mathematical optimization problems, i.e., problems in which numbers are sought that minimize an expression subject to obeying equality and inequality constraints. Dynamic optimization problems are distinct from non-dynamic problems in that the sought numbers may vary over one independent variable. This independent variable can be thought of as, e.g., time. This thesis presents three methods, with emphasis on algorithms, convergence a…
In this work, we propose a tube-based MPC scheme for state- and input-constrained linear systems subject to dynamic uncertainties characterized by dynamic integral quadratic constraints (IQCs). In particular, we extend the framework of $ρ$-hard IQCs for exponential stability analysis to external inputs. This result yields that the error between the true uncertain system and the nominal prediction model is bounded by an exponentially stable scalar system. In the proposed tube-based MPC scheme, the state of this error bounding system is predicted along with the nominal model and used as a scalin…
A stochastic differential game theoretic model has been proposed to determine optimal behavior of a fish while migrating against water currents both in rivers and oceans. Then, a dynamic objective function is maximized subject to two stochastic dynamics, one represents its location and another its relative velocity against water currents. In relative velocity stochastic dynamics, a Cucker-Smale type stochastic differential equation is introduced under white noise. As the information regarding hydrodynamic environment is incomplete and imperfect, a Feynman type path integral under $\sqrt{8/3}$ …
