Fully packed loop models describe the statistics of closely packed nested polygons on the square lattice. Many exact results can be obtained for these models, even for finite geometries, using their close relationship to alternating-sign matrices and the solvable six-vertex and O(n=1) lattice models. Some results for the exact partition function of fully packed loop models on various finite geometries are briefly reviewed, as well as the well-known order-disorder bulk phase transition present in these models.
A detailed study is presented of the distribution of boundary nests of polygons in fully packed loop models with mirror or rotational symmetry. The probability distribution function of such nests, as well as the average number of nests, are obtained analytically, albeit conjecturally. It is further shown that fully packed loop models undergo another phase transition as a function of the boundary nest fugacity. At criticality, we derive a scaling form for the nest distribution function which displays an unusual non-Gaussian cubic exponential behaviour.
Two conjectures of Zuber [``On the counting of fully packed loops configurations. Some new conjectures,'' preprint] on the enumeration of configurations in the fully packed loop model on the square grid with periodic boundary conditions, which have a prescribed linkage pattern, are proved. Following an idea of de Gier [``Loops, matchings and alternating-sign matrices,'' Discrete Math., to appear], the proofs are based on bijections between such fully packed loop configurations and rhombus tilings, and the hook-content formula for semistandard tableaux.
New conjectures are proposed on the numbers of FPL configurations pertaining to certain types of link patterns. Making use of the Razumov and Stroganov Ansatz, these conjectures are based on the analysis of the ground state of the Temperley-Lieb chain, for periodic boundary conditions and so-called ``identified connectivities'', up to size $2n=22$.
It has recently been observed empirically that the number of FPL configurations with 3 sets of a, b and c nested arches equals the number of plane partitions in a box of size a x b x c. In this note, this result is proved by constructing explicitly the bijection between these FPL and plane partitions.
We present a Markov-chain Monte Carlo algorithm of worm type that correctly simulates the fully-packed loop model on the honeycomb lattice, and we prove that it is ergodic and has uniform stationary distribution. The fully-packed loop model on the honeycomb lattice is equivalent to the zero-temperature triangular-lattice antiferromagnetic Ising model, which is fully frustrated and notoriously difficult to simulate. We test this worm algorithm numerically and estimate the dynamic exponent z = 0.515(8). We also measure several static quantities of interest, including loop-length and face-size mo…
We propose that a system of colloidal particles interacting with a honeycomb array of optical traps that each contain three wells can be used to realize a fully packed loop model. One of the phases in this system can be mapped to Baxter's three-coloring problem, offering an easily accessible physical realization of this problem. As a function of temperature and interaction strength, we find a series of phases, including long range ordered loop or stripe states, stripes with sliding symmetries, random packed loop states, and disordered states in which the loops break apart. Our geometry could b…
Motivated by a recent adsorption experiment [M.O. Blunt et al., Science 322, 1077 (2008)], we study tilings of the plane with three different types of rhombi. An interaction disfavors pairs of adjacent rhombi of the same type. This is shown to be a special case of a model of fully-packed loops with interactions between monomers at distance two along a loop. We solve the latter model using Coulomb gas techniques and show that its critical exponents vary continuously with the interaction strenght. At low temperature it undergoes a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition to an ordered phase, which is pred…
The Coulomb phase of spin ice, and indeed the Ic phase of water ice, naturally realise a fully-packed two-colour loop model in three dimensions. We present a detailed analysis of the statistics of these loops, which avoid themselves and other loops of the same colour, and contrast their behaviour to an analogous two-dimensional model. The properties of another extended degree of freedom are also addressed, flux lines of the emergent gauge field of the Coulomb phase, which appear as "Dirac strings" in spin ice. We mention implications of these results for related models, and experiments.
The fully packed loop (FPL) model is a statistical model related to the integrable $U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_3)$ vertex model. In this paper we study the continuum limit of the FPL. With the appropriate weight of non-contractible loops, we give evidence of an extended $W_3$ symmetry in the continuum. The partition function on the torus is calculated exactly, yielding new modular invariants of $W_3$ characters. The full CFT spectrum is obtained, and is found to be in excellent agreement with exact diagonalisation.
By means of numerical simulations we investigate the configurational properties of densely and fully packed configurations of loops in the negative-weight percolation (NWP) model. In the presented study we consider 2d square, 2d honeycomb, 3d simple cubic and 4d hypercubic lattice graphs, where edge weights are drawn from a Gaussian distribution. For a given realization of the disorder we then compute a configuration of loops, such that the configurational energy, given by the sum of all individual loop weights, is minimized. For this purpose, we employ a mapping of the NWP model to the "minim…
We explore the physical properties of the completely packed O($n$) loop model on the square lattice, and its generalization to an Eulerian graph model, which follows by including cubic vertices which connect the four incoming loop segments. This model includes crossing bonds as well. Our study of the properties of this model involve transfer-matrix calculations and finite-size scaling. The numerical results are compared to existing exact solutions, including solutions of special cases of a so-called coloring model, which are shown to be equivalent with our generalized loop model. The latter ex…
The Fully-Packed Loop (FPL) model on the honeycomb lattice is a critical model of non-intersecting polygons covering the full lattice, and was introduced by Reshetikhin in 1991. Using the two-component Coulomb-Gas approach of Kondev, de Gier and Nienhuis (1996), we argue that the scaling limit consists of two degrees of freedom: a field governed by the imaginary Liouville action, and a free boson. We introduce a family of three-point correlation functions which probe the imaginary Liouville component, and we use transfer-matrix numerical diagonalisation to compute finite-size estimates. We obt…
We present a Markov-chain Monte Carlo algorithm of "worm"type that correctly simulates the O(n) loop model on any (finite and connected) bipartite cubic graph, for any real n>0, and any edge weight, including the fully-packed limit of infinite edge weight. Furthermore, we prove rigorously that the algorithm is ergodic and has the correct stationary distribution. We emphasize that by using known exact mappings when n=2, this algorithm can be used to simulate a number of zero-temperature Potts antiferromagnets for which the Wang-Swendsen-Kotecky cluster algorithm is non-ergodic, including the 3-…
Fully packed loop models on the square and the honeycomb lattice constitute new classes of critical behaviour, distinct from those of the low-temperature O(n) model. A simple symmetry argument suggests that such compact phases are only possible when the underlying lattice is bipartite. Motivated by the hope of identifying further compact universality classes we therefore study the fully packed loop model on the square-octagon lattice. Surprisingly, this model is only critical for loop weights n < 1.88, and its scaling limit coincides with the dense phase of the O(n) model. For n=2 it is exactl…
We obtain long series expansions for the bulk, surface and corner free energies for several two-dimensional statistical models, by combining Enting's finite lattice method (FLM) with exact transfer matrix enumerations. The models encompass all integrable curves of the Q-state Potts model on the square and triangular lattices, including the antiferromagnetic transition curves and the Ising model (Q=2) at temperature T, as well as a fully-packed O(n) type loop model on the square lattice. The expansions are around the trivial fixed points at infinite Q, n or 1/T. By using a carefully chosen expa…
A statistical model of loops on the three-dimensional lattice is proposed and is investigated. It is O(n)-type but has loop fugacity that depends on global three-dimensional shapes of loops in a particular fashion. It is shown that, despite this non-locality and the dimensionality, a layer-to-layer transfer matrix can be constructed as a product of local vertex weights for infinitely many points in the parameter space. Using this transfer matrix, the site entropy is estimated numerically in the fully packed limit.
A relation between the average length of loops and their free energy is obtained for a variety of O(n)-type models on two-dimensional lattices, by extending to finite temperatures a calculation due to Kast. We show that the (number) averaged loop length L stays finite for all non-zero fugacities n, and in particular it does not diverge upon entering the critical regime n -> 2+. Fully packed loop (FPL) models with n=2 seem to obey the simple relation L = 3 L_min, where L_min is the smallest loop length allowed by the underlying lattice. We demonstrate this analytically for the FPL model on the …
Loop condensed phases are scale-invariant quantum liquid phases of matter. These phases include topologically ordered liquid phases such as the toric code as well as critical liquids such as the Rokhsar-Kivelson point of the quantum dimer model on the square lattice. To investigate the extent to which nonlocal geometric observables capture a signature of the nonlocal quantum order present in these phases, we compute geometric properties of such loop condensed states using directed loop Monte Carlo calculations. In particular, we investigate the loop condensed nature of ground state of the squa…
Exact results for conformational statistics of compact polymers are derived from the two-flavour fully packed loop model on the square lattice. This loop model exhibits a two-dimensional manifold of critical fixed points each one characterised by an infinite set of geometrical scaling dimensions. We calculate these dimensions exactly by mapping the loop model to an interface model whose scaling limit is described by a Liouville field theory. The formulae for the central charge and the first few scaling dimensions are compared to numerical transfer matrix results and excellent agreement is foun…
We study the evolution of 3d weakly interacting bosons at finite chemical potential with the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We fully characterise the vortex network in an out of equilibrium. At high temperature the filament statistics are the ones of fully-packed loop models. The vortex tangle undergoes a geometric percolation transition within the thermodynamically ordered phase. After infinitely fast quenches across the thermodynamic critical point deep into the ordered phase, we identify a first approach towards the critical percolation state, a later coarsening process that does not…
An exact solution of the model of fully packed loops of two colors on a square lattice has recently been proposed by Dei Cont and Nienhuis using the coordinate Bethe Ansatz approach. We point out here a simpler alternative, in which the transfer matrix is directly identified as a product of R-matrices; this allows to apply the (nested) algebraic Bethe Ansatz, which leads to the same Bethe equations. We comment on some of the applications of this result.
