It has been known for some time that proportional output feedback will stabilize MIMO, minimum-phase, linear time-invariant systems if the feedback gain is sufficiently large. High-gain adaptive controllers achieve stability by automatically driving up the feedback gain monotonically. More recently, it was demonstrated that sample-and-hold implementations of the high-gain adaptive controller also require adaptation of the sampling rate. In this paper, we use recent advances in the mathematical field of dynamic equations on time scales to unify and generalize the discrete and continuous versions of the high-gain adaptive controller. We prove the stability of high-gain adaptive controllers on a wide class of time scales.
In this paper, two classes of continuous higher order adaptive sliding mode controllers based on barrier functions are developed for a perturbed chain of integrators with unbounded perturbations. Both classes provide finite-time convergence of system states to a predefined domain using a continuous control signal. The first class of adaptive controllers does not require any assumptions about the perturbation; however, it can provide unbounded control gains. To ensure bounded control gains, and in the case of a Lipschitz perturbation, a second class of adaptive controllers, called the adaptive …

The performance comparison has been done for the power system network comprising of two thermal power plants which are tie line connected. For using the optimal control based method such as LQR PI controller and computationally intelligent method such as PSO base…
This paper presents a novel adaptive control methodology for uncertain systems with time-varying unknown parameters and time-varying bounded disturbance. The adaptive controller ensures uniformly bounded transient and asymptotic tracking for system's both signals, input and output, simultaneously. The performance bounds can be systematically improved by increasing the adaptation gain. Simulations of a robotic arm with time-varying friction verify the theoretical findings.
Networked Control Systems (NCSs) are often associated with problems like random data losses which might lead to system instability. This paper proposes a method based on the use of variable controller gains to achieve maximum parametric robustness of the plant controlled over a network. Stability using variable controller gains under data loss conditions is analyzed using a suitable Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) formulation. Also, a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) based technique is used to maximize parametric robustness of the plant.
The focus of this paper is on the co-design of control and communication protocol for the control of multiple applications with unknown parameters using a distributed embedded system. The co-design consists of an adaptive switching controller and a hybrid communication architecture that switches between a time-triggered and event-triggered protocol. It is shown that the overall co-design leads to an overall switching adaptive system that has bounded solutions and ensures tracking in the presence of a class of disturbances. In order to achieve the goal of tracking persistent excitation techniqu…
In Part I of this paper, we have developed a novel $\mathcal{L}_1$ adaptive control architecture that enables fast adaptation and leads to uniformly bounded transient and asymptotic tracking for system's both signals, input and output, simultaneously. In this paper, we derive the stability margins of $\mathcal{L}_1$ adaptive control architecture, including time-delay and gain margins in the presence of time-varying bounded disturbance. Simulations verify the theoretical findings.
This paper is concerned with model reference adaptive controller design for a class of nonlinear fractional order systems. Recent works on this topic rarely include direct methods and they are mostly based on indirect methods where the frequency distributed model is used to prove the stability of the closed loop system. Since the chain rule cannot be applied in fractional derivations, in order to prove the lyapunov stability here fractional inequalities are used. Finally, by means of a numerical example, the controller performance is demonstrated.
We propose a new matrix pencil based approach for design of state-feedback and output-feedback stabilizing controllers for a general class of uncertain nonlinear strict-feedback-like systems. While the dynamic controller structure is based on the dual dynamic high-gain scaling based approach, we cast the design procedure within a general matrix pencil structure unlike prior results that utilized conservative algebraic bounds of terms arising in Lyapunov inequalities. The design freedoms in the dynamic controller are extracted in terms of generalized eigenvalues associated with matrix pencils f…
This paper considers the problem of temperature regulation in multicore processors by dynamic voltage-frequency scaling. We propose a feedback law that is based on an integral controller with adjustable gain, designed for fast tracking convergence in the face of model uncertainties, time-varying plants, and tight computing-timing constraints. Moreover, unlike prior works we consider a nonlinear, time-varying plant model that trades off precision for simple and efficient on-line computations. Cycle-level, full system simulator implementation and evaluation illustrates fast and accurate tracking…
The voltage received by each customer connected to a power distribution line with local controllers (inverters) is regulated to be within a desired margin through a class of slope-restricted controllers, known conventionally as \emph{droop} controllers. We adapt the design of the droop controllers according to the known bounds of the net power consumption of each customer in each observation time window. A sufficient condition for voltage regulation is provided for each time window, which guides the design of the droop controllers, depending on the properties of the distribution line (line imp…
Analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) and uncertainties in modeling the plant dynamics are the main sources of imprecisions in the design cycle of model-based controllers. These implementation and model uncertainties should be addressed in the early stages of the controller design, otherwise they could lead to failure in the controller performance and consequently increase the time and cost required for completing the controller verification and validation (V&V) with more iterative loops. In this paper, a new control approach is developed based on a nonlinear discrete sliding mode controller (DSM…
In this paper, we present Lyapunov-based robust and adaptive controllers for the finite time stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators with bounded uncertainties. The proposed controllers can be designed for integrator chains of any arbitrary length. The uncertainty bounds are known in the robust control problem whereas they are unknown in the adaptive control problem. Both controllers are developed from a class of finite time stabilization controllers for pure integrator chains. Lyapunov-based design permits to calculate upper bound on convergence time.
Stability is a critical feature of distributed linear multi-input-multi-output systems. Global asymptotic stability usually can be guaranteed when using decentralised or distributed control architectures, if: (i) conservative controllers are designed, (ii) collective stability conditions are satisfied, or (iii) interaction terms are neutral. This paper extends the collective stability method to incorporate adaptive controllers, and shows that this method is insufficient for systems with large-gain interconnections. Subsequently, we show that global asymptotic stability can be systematically en…
Relaxed conditions are given for stability of a feedback system consisting of an exponentially stable multi-input multi-output nonlinear plant and an integral controller. Roughly speaking, it is shown that if the composition of the plant equilibrium input-output map and the integral feedback gain is infinitesimally contracting, then the closed-loop system is exponentially stable if the integral gain is sufficiently low. The main result is illustrated with an application arising in frequency control of AC power systems. We demonstrate how the contraction condition can be checked computationally…
This paper analyzes output feedback control of a class of unknown nonlinear systems in the presence of measurement noise using multiple high-gain observers (MHGO). It is well-known that single high-gain observers (HGO) are not able to provide satisfactory performance when the system output is contaminated by noise. More specifically, there is a trade-off between the convergence speed of state estimation and the bound of steady estimation error in HGO when the output measurement is contaminated by noise. In the presented scheme, the output feedback controller utilizes the state estimation obtai…
This thesis presents fuzzy-L1 adaptive controller and Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC) with Prescribed Performance Function (PPF) as two adaptive approaches for high nonlinear systems as two original contribution to the literature. L1 adaptive controller has a structure that allows decoupling between robustness and adaption owing to the use of a low pass filter with adjustable gain in the feedback loop. A practical new fuzzy based approach for the tuning of the feedback filter of L1 adaptive controller is proposed. The fuzzy controller is optimally tuned using Particle Swarm Optimizatio…
In this paper, a variable gain super-twisting algorithm based on a barrier function is proposed for a class of first order disturbed systems with uncertain control coefficient and whose disturbances derivatives are bounded but they are unknown. The specific feature of this algorithm is that it can ensure the convergence of the output variable and maintain it in a predefined neighborhood of zero independent of the upper bound of the disturbances derivatives. Moreover, thanks to the structure of the barrier function, it forces the gain to decrease together with the output variable which yields t…
This paper considers the cooperative output regulation problem for linear multi-agent systems with a directed communication graph, heterogeneous linear subsystems, and an exosystem whose output is available to only a subset of subsystems. Both the cases with nominal and uncertain linear subsystems are studied. For the case with nominal linear subsystems, a distributed adaptive observer-based controller is designed, where the distributed adaptive observer is implemented for the subsystems to estimate the exogenous signal. For the case with uncertain linear subsystems, the proposed distributed o…
In this paper, we study the quadrotor UAV attitude control on SO(3) in the presence of unknown disturbances and model uncertainties. L1 adaptive control for UAVs using Euler angles/quaternions is shown to exhibit robustness and precise attitude tracking in the presence of disturbances and uncertainties. However, it is well known that dynamical models and controllers that use Euler angle representations are prone to singularities and typically have smaller regions of attraction while quaternion representations are subject to the unwinding phenomenon. To avoid such complexities, we present a Geo…
Sliding mode control (SMC) is a robust and computationally efficient solution for tracking control problems of highly nonlinear systems with a great deal of uncertainty. High frequency oscillations due to chattering phenomena and sensitivity to data sampling imprecisions limit the digital implementation of conventional first order continuous-time SMC. Higher order discrete SMC is an effective solution to reduce the chattering during the controller software implementation, and also overcome imprecisions due to data sampling. In this paper, a new adaptive second order discrete sliding mode contr…
In this paper, adaptive set-point regulation controllers for discrete-time nonlinear systems are constructed. The system to be controlled is assumed to have a parametric uncertainty, and an excitation signal is used in order to obtain the parameter estimate. The proposed controller belongs to the category of indirect adaptive controllers, and its construction is based on the policy of calculating the control input rather than that of obtaining a control law. The proposed method solves the adaptive set-point regulation problem under the (possibly minimal) assumption that the target state is rea…
Adaptive cooperative tracking control with prescribed performance function (PPF) is proposed for high-order nonlinear multi-agent systems. The tracking error originally within a known large set is confined to a smaller predefined set using this approach. Using output error transformation, the constrained system is relaxed and mapped to an unconstrained one. The controller is conceived under the assumption that the agents' nonlinear dynamics are unknown and the perceived network is structured and strongly connected. Under the proposed controller, all agents track the trajectory of the leader no…
In this work, an intelligent controller is employed to the chaos control problem in a nonlinear pendulum. The adopted approach is based on the sliding mode control strategy and enhanced by an adaptive fuzzy algorithm to cope with modeling inaccuracies. The convergence properties of the closed-loop system are analytically proven using Lyapunov's direct method and Barbalat's lemma. Numerical results are also presented in order to demonstrate the control system performance.
This paper addresses the problem of regulating the output voltage of a DC-DC buck-boost converter feeding a constant power load, which is a problem of current practical interest. Designing a stabilising controller is theoretically challenging because its average model is a bilinear second order system that, due to the presence of the constant power load,is non- minimum phase with respect to both states. Moreover,to design a high performance controller, the knowledge of the extracted load power, which is difficult to measure in industrial applications, is required. In this paper, an adaptive inte…
In this work we consider the online control of a known linear dynamic system with adversarial disturbance and adversarial controller cost. The goal in online control is to minimize the regret, defined as the difference between cumulative cost over a period $T$ and the cumulative cost for the best policy from a comparator class. For the setting we consider, we generalize the previously proposed online Disturbance Response Controller (DRC) to the adaptive gradient online Disturbance Response Controller. Using the modified controller, we present novel regret guarantees that improves the establish…
The dead-zone is one of the most common hard nonlinearities in industrial actuators and its presence may drastically compromise control systems stability and performance. In this work, an adaptive variable structure controller is proposed to deal with a class of uncertain nonlinear systems subject to a non-symmetric dead-zone input. The adopted approach is primarily based on the sliding mode control methodology but enhanced by an adaptive fuzzy algorithm to compensate the dead-zone. Using Lyapunov stability theory and Barbalat's lemma, the convergence properties of the closed-loop system are a…
The paper deals with the design of nonlinear adaptive cruise controllers for vehicular platoons operating on an open road or a ring-road. The constructed feedback controllers are nonlinear functions of the distance between successive vehicles and their speeds. It is shown that the proposed novel controllers guarantee safety (collision avoidance) and bounded vehicle speeds by explicitly characterizing the set of allowable inputs. Moreover, we guarantee global asymptotic stability of the platoon to a desired configuration as well as string stability. Certain macroscopic properties are also inves…
This paper proposes an adaptive neuro-fuzzy framework to improve drug infusion rate in closed-loop control of anesthesia. The proposed controller provides a sub-optimal propofol administration rate as input to reach the desired bispectral index, which is the output of the system, in both induction and maintenance phases. In this controller, a critic agent assesses the plant output and produces a reinforcement signal to adapt the controller parameters and minimize the propofol administration rate. The controller is applied to a conventional pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamics model of anesthesia t…

The integral control of positive systems using nonnegative control input is an important problem arising, among others, in biochemistry, epidemiology and ecology. An immediate solution is to use an ON-OFF nonlinearity between the controller and the system. However, this solution is only available when controllers are implemented in computer systems. When this is not the case, like in biology, alternative approaches need to be explored. Based on recent research in the control of biological systems, we propose to develop a theory for the integral control of positive systems using nonnegative con…
