We investigate the detection of exotic massive strongly interacting hadrons (uhecrons) in ultra high energy cosmic ray telescopes. The conclusion is that experiments such as the Pierre Auger Observatory have the potential to detect these particles. It is shown that uhecron showers have clear distinctive features when compared to proton and nuclear showers. The simulation of uhecron air showers, and its detection and reconstruction by fluorescence telescopes is described. We determine basic cuts in observables that will separate uhecrons from the cosmic ray bulk, assuming this is composed by protons. If these are composed by heavier nucleus the separation will be much improved. We also discuss photon induced showers. The complementarity between uhecron detection in accelerator experiments is discussed.
Hadron spectroscopy represented in the past a major tool for understanding the fundamental symmetries of strong forces. More recently, the interest on this topic has been revitalized by the discovery of new quarkonium-like resonances, that do not fit in the standard picture and whose understanding could improve our mastery of quantum chromodynamics. I review here the experimental signatures of these exotic hadrons, at present and future e+e- and hadron collider experiments.
Many new exotic hadrons, that do not fit into the existing naming scheme for hadrons, have been discovered over the past few years. A new scheme is set out, extending the existing protocol, in order to provide a consistent naming convention for these newly discovered states, and other new hadrons that may be discovered in future.
In the past decade, exotic hadrons with charm and bottom flavors have been extensively studied both in experiments and in theories. In this review, we provide topical discussions by selecting $X,Y,Z$ particles, to which Belle has made important contributions. These are $X(3872)$, $Y(4260)$, $Z_c(4430)^+$, $Z_c(3900)^+$, $Z_{b}(10610)^+$ and $Z_{b}(10650)^+$. Based on the current experimental observations, we discuss those states with emphasis on hadronic molecule whose dynamics is governed by chiral symmetry and heavy-quark symmetry of QCD. We also mention briefly various interpretations and s…
We investigate the semi-inclusive production of hidden-charm exotic states, including $X(3872)$, $Z_c$, $Z_{cs}$ and the pentaquark $P_c$ states, in lepton-proton scattering processes. These hadrons are close to the thresholds of a pair of charm and anticharm hadrons, and are assumed to have hadronic molecular structure as their main components. In order to give order-of-magnitude estimates of the cross sections, we use Pythia to simulate the short-distance productions of the constituent hadrons, which then rescatter to form the exotic hadrons. The estimates for the $X(3872)$ and $Z_c(3900)^\p…
I review here the most recent results about the observation and the study of hadronic bound states that do not fit well in the standard quarkonium picture. Several new states have been observed in the last few years, at B-, tau-Factories and hadron colliders. For most of them, quantum number determinations are available and allow to develop the basis of a new spectroscopy based on exotic compounds like tetraquarks or meson molecules. Nonetheless, there is still a lot of work to do to complete the picture.
In these proceedings we summarise the recent studies of exotic hadrons performed at the LHC and Tevatron. The X(3872) production cross section and mass measurements are reported, along with the determination of its quantum numbers, the searches for decays to $\mathrm{p\bar{p}}$, and for partner states in the bottomonium sector. Furthermore, we discuss the Y(4140) and Y(4274) structures, observed by several experiments in the $J/ψϕ$ invariant mass spectrum.
We investigated the possibility of determining internal structure of exotic hadrons by using high-energy reaction processes, where quarks and gluons are appropriate degrees of freedom. In particular, it should be valuable to investigate the high-energy exclusive processes which include generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and generalized distribution amplitudes (GDAs). The GPDs and GDAs contain momentum distributions of partons and form factors. We found that the exotic nature appears in momentum distributions of quarks as suggested by the constituent-counting rule and in the form factors a…
The non-relativistic wave function framework is applied to study the production and decay of the exotic hadrons which can be effectively described as bound states of other hadrons. Employing the factorized formulation, we investigate the production of exotic hadrons in the multiproduction processes at high energy hadronic colliders with the help of event generators. This study provides crucial information for the measurements of the relevant exotic hadrons.
In this paper we propose the study of the photoproduction of charmoniumlike states in $pp$ collisions at RHIC and LHC energies and estimate the rapidity distribution and total cross sections for the production of the exotic hadrons $Y(3940)$, $X(3915)$, $Z(4430)$ and $Z_c(3900)$. We demonstrate that the experimental analysis of this process can provide complementary and independent checks on these states, and help to understand their underlying nature.
The physics of exotic hadrons is revisited and reviewed, with emphasis on flavour configurations which have not yet been investigated. The constituent quark model of multiquark states is discussed in some detail, as it can serve as a guide for more elaborate approaches.
The LHCb experiment is designed to study properties and decays of heavy flavored hadrons produced from $pp$ collisions at the LHC. During Run~1, it has recorded the world's largest data sample of beauty and charm hadrons, enabling precision spectroscopy studies of such particles. Several important results obtained by LHCb, such as the discovery of the first pentaquark states and the first unambiguous determination of the $Z_c(4430)^-$ as an exotic state, have dramatically increased the interest on spectroscopy of heavy hadrons. An overview of the latest LHCb results on the subject, including t…
The observation of many unexpected states decaying into heavy quarkonia has challenged the usual QQbar interpretation. One of the most studied exotic states, the X(3872), happens to be copiously produced in high-energy hadron collisions. We discuss how this large prompt production cross-section disfavors a loosely-bound molecule interpretation for this particle. This is supported by Monte Carlo simulations, and by a comparison with extrapolated light nuclei data by ALICE.
We investigate on exotic tetraquark hadrons of the kind [cs][cbar sbar] by computing their spectrum and decay modes within a constituent diquark-antidiquark model. We also compare these predictions with the present experimental knowledge.
Nucleus-nucleus collisions offer a great opportunity for analyzing and determining the intrinsic nature of heavy and exotic hadrons. In this sense, here we discuss how the production and dissociation of hadron states are affected by reactions during the expansion of hadronic matter in a heavy-ion collision environment. We give emphasis to recent works on exotic states, revisiting as a case study the time evolution of the abundances of the $X_{0,1}(2900)$ states.
The molecular picture and the constituent-quark model of exotic hadrons are reviewed, with application to the states recently discovered in the hidden-charm and hidden beauty sectors, and to other configurations.
Based on chiral dynamics, existence of exotic hadrons is discussed in the SU(3) symmetric limit. The low energy s-wave interaction of the Nambu-Goldstone boson with a hadron is known to be determined model-independently, which has been used to generate some hadron resonances in nonexotic channels. We show that this interaction in any exotic channels is not strong enough to generate a bound state.
The anomalous dimensions of hadronic interpolators contain dynamical information on the properties of the associated hadron states. We point out that they provide, in particular, a link by which gauge-invariant information on exotic contributions to hadronic wavefunctionals can be obtained from approximate gravity duals for QCD. This is demonstrated by the holographic description of a dominant tetraquark component in the lightest scalar mesons.
Exotic hadrons are important because their existence or absence can provide important clues to understanding how QCD makes hadrons from quarks and gluons. The first experimentally confirmed exotic will be the first hadron containing both $qq$ and $\bar q q$ pairs and the first hadron containing color sextet and color octet pairs. Theoretical models are not very useful because there is no accepted model for multiquark systems with color-space correlations. The constituent quark model is the only phenomenological model with predictive power that has given experimentally tested universal predicti…
I classify exotic hadrons into two types, "genuine" and "hidden" exotics, and propose that the "hidden" exotics would be interpreted as "chiralons" in the ~U(12)_SF times O(3,1)_L-classification scheme of hadrons. Based upon this conjecture I investigate the mass spectrum of 1S, 1P, and 2S states for the ccbar system by use of a phenomenological mass formula with the spin-dependent interactions and present possible assignments for exotic neutral charmonium-like states which were recently discovered. It is also mentioned that some J^PC-exotic states predicted in this scheme might correspond to …
We perform the first model independent analysis of experimental data using Deep Neural Networks to determine the nature of an exotic hadron. Specifically, we study the line shape of the $P_c(4312)$ signal reported by the LHCb collaboration and we find that its most likely interpretation is that of a virtual state. This method can be applied to other near-threshold resonance candidates.
Exotic stable massive particles (SMP) are proposed in a number of scenarios of physics beyond the Standard Model. It is important that LHC experiments are able to detect hadronic SMP with masses around the TeV scale. To do this, an understanding of the interactions of SMPs in matter is required. In this paper a Regge-based model of $R$-hadron scattering is extended and implemented in Geant-4.
We classify the meson and baryon long lived resonances considering quarks with electric charge 5/3 and $-4/3$ (in units of $\vert e\vert$) predicted by some 3-3-1 models. Some of these exotic resonances have the usual electric charges $0,\pm1$, others have $\pm(3,4,5)$, and the lightest ones decaying only into leptons plus known resonances. We propose another heavy $SU(3)_H$ global symmetry under which hadrons involving only exotic quarks can be constructed.
The philosophy on production of exotic hadrons (multi-quark states) in the framework of quark combination model is investigated, taking $f_0(980)$ as an example. The production rate and $p_T$ spectra of $f_0(980)$ considered as $(s\bar s)$ or $(s\bar q\bar s q)$ respectively, are calculated and compared in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200GeV$. The unitarity of various combination models, when open for exotic hadron production, is addressed.
This review presents a selection of the final results of searches for various exotic physics phenomena in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 and 8 TeV delivered by the LHC and collected with the ATLAS and CMS detectors in 2011 (5 fb-1) and in the first part of 2012 (4 fb-1). Searches for large extra dimensions, gravitons, microscopic black holes, long-lived particles, dark matter, and leptoquarks are presented in this report. No sign of new physics beyond the Standard Model has been observed so far. In the majority of the cases these searches set the most stringent limits to date on the afo…
Revisiting the QCD sum-rule description of exotic hadron states, we argue that, in order to arrive at trustable analyses of, for instance, strong decay widths of multiquarks, it is inevitable to adopt the QCD sum-rule approach beyond the leading perturbative level.
A review of QCD-based theory approaches to study the heavy-flavor and exotic hadrons is given. The focus is on the results from lattice QCD and from lattice QCD complemented by effective field theories. Both approaches are first briefly introduced and applied in few examples. Then the status of various hadrons sectors is presented.
We discuss the specific features of extracting properties of the exotic polyquark hadrons (tetraquarks, pentaquarks) compared to the usual hadrons by the QCD sum-rule approach. In the case of the ordinary hadrons, already the one-loop leading-order correlation functions provide the bulk of the hadron observables, e.g., of the form factor; inclusion of radiative corrections modifies already nonzero one-loop contributions. In the case of an exotic hadron, the situation is qualitatively different: discussing strong decays of an exotic tetraquark meson, which provide the main contribution to its w…
Many charmonium-like and bottomonium-like $XYZ$ resonances have been observed by the Belle, Babar, CLEO and BESIII collaborations in the past decade. They are difficult to fit in the conventional quark model and thus are considered as candidates of exotic hadrons, such as multi-quark states, meson molecules, and hybrids. In this talk, we first briefly introduce the method of QCD sum rules and then provide a short review of the mass spectra of the quarkonium-like tetraquark states and the heavy quarkonium hybrids in the QCD sum rules approach. Possible interpretations of the $XYZ$ resonances ar…
The LHCb Collaboration has reported resonant activity in the channel $D^+ K^-$, identifying two components: $X_0(2900)$ with $J^P = 0^+$ at $2866 {\pm} 7$ MeV, $Γ_0=57{\pm} 13$ MeV and $X_1(2900)$ with $J^P = 1^-$ at $2904 {\pm} 7$ MeV, $Γ_1=110{\pm} 12$ MeV. We interpret the $X_0(2900)$ component as a $cs \bar u\bar d$ isosinglet compact tetraquark, calculating its mass to be $2863 {\pm} 12$ MeV. This is the first exotic hadron with open heavy flavor. The analogous $bs\bar u\bar d$ tetraquark is predicted at $6213 {\pm} 12$ MeV. We discuss possible interpretations of the heavier and wider $X_…
We study the exotic hadrons in s-wave scattering of the Nambu-Goldstone boson with a target hadron based on chiral dynamics. Utilizing the low energy theorem of chiral symmetry, we show that the s-wave interaction is not strong enough to generate bound states in exotic channels in flavor SU(3) symmetric limit, although the interaction is responsible for generating some nonexotic hadron resonances dynamically. We discuss the renormalization condition adopted in this analysis.
Prompt and nonprompt productions of exotic multiquark states are studied using the $\sim$10.4 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected by the D0 experiment in Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV. The recent D0 results on the prompt and nonprompt production of the $X(3872)$ and $Z_c^+(3900)$ states and the $P_c$ pentaquarks at the 4450 MeV region are reported. Signals corresponding to these states are found in the nonprompt production, whereas only the $X(3872)$ state is seen in the prompt production. The ratio of prompt to nonprompt $X(3872)$ production is about three times larger i…
It is shown that the exotic non-qqq hadrons of pentaquark $qqqq\bar{q}$ states can be clearly distinguished from the conventional qqq-baryon resonances or their hybrids if the flavor of $\bar{q}$ is different from any of the other four quarks. We suggest the physical process $p(e,e'K^-)Z(uuud\bar{s})$, which can be investigated at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab), as an ideal process to search for the existence or non-existence of the exotic hadron of minimal pentaquark state $Z(uuud\bar{s})$. (The search for the existence of $Z(uudd\bar{s})$ is also discussed in the p…
Hadronic production of nonrelativistic boundstates of $b^{\prime}$ or isosinglet quarks D with suppressed weak decays is investigated for LHC and SSC energies. QCD corrections to production and decay rates are incorporated. Large rates for final states from $η_{b^{\prime}}\rightarrow HZ$ are predicted.
We investigate the possibilities of using measurements in present and future experiments on heavy ion collisions to answer some longstanding problems in hadronic physics, namely identifying hadronic molecular states and exotic hadrons with multiquark components. The yields of a selected set of exotic hadron candidates in relativistic heavy ion collisions are discussed in the coalescence model in comparison with the statistical model. We find that the yield of a hadron is typically an order of magnitude smaller when it is a compact multiquark state, compared to that of an excited hadronic state…
We calculate the Drell-Yan production cross sections and differential distributions in the transverse momentum and rapidity of the $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ exotic hadrons $ϕ(2170)$, X(4260) and $Y_b(10890)$ at the hadron colliders LHC and the Tevatron. These hadrons are tetraquark (four-quark) candidates, with a hidden $s\bar{s}$, $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$ quark pair, respectively. In deriving the distributions and cross sections, we include the order $α_s$ QCD corrections, resum the large logarithms in the small transverse momentum region in the impact-parameter formalism, and use the state of the art…
We discuss hadron-tomography studies for the nucleon and exotic hadrons by high-energy hadron reactions. First, the constituent-counting rule is explained for determining internal quark configurations of exotic-hadron candidates by scaling properties of high-energy exclusive cross sections. Next, possibilities are discussed for investigating the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the nucleon and exotic hadrons at J-PARC. In particular, we study hadronic $2 \to 3$ process $p+p \to N+π+B$, exclusive Drell-Yan process, and exotic-hadron GPDs. For determining three-dimensional structure of…

An exotic approach to hadrons is discussed. It is based on the recently developed open-closed string duality explicitly conjectured as the AdS/CFT correspondence. Mesons as well as pentaquarks are studied in this approach. Spins are introduced as distribution functions over the string, and a second quantization method of string theory is examined and used to estimate the mass and decay width of various hadrons. This approach provides a way to understand the structure of flavor by a configuration of probe branes.
It is proposed that fragmentation functions should be used to identify exotic hadrons. As an example, fragmentation functions of the scalar meson f_0(980) are investigated. It is pointed out that the second moments and functional forms of the u- and s-quark fragmentation functions can distinguish the tetraquark structure from $q\bar q$. By the global analysis of f_0 (980) production data in electron-positron annihilation, its fragmentation functions and their uncertainties are determined. It is found that the current available data are not sufficient to determine its internal structure, while …
In this paper we investigate the Exotic Charmonium (EC) production in $γγ$ interactions present in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies as well as for the proposed energies of the Future Circular Collider (FCC). Our results demonstrate that the experimental study of these processes is feasible and can be used to constrain the theoretical decay widths and shed some light on the configuration of the considered multiquark states.
In this talk, multiquarks are studied microscopically in a standard quark model. In pure ground-state pentaquarks the short-range interaction is computed and it is shown to be repulsive, a narrow pentaquark cannot be in the groundstate. As a possible excitation, an additional quark-antiquark pair is then considered, and this is suggested to produce linear molecular system, with a narrow decay width. This excitation may be energetically favourable to the p-wave excitation suggested by the other pentaquark models. Here, the quarks assemble in three hadronic clusters, and the central hadron provi…
We explore a possibility to generate exotic hadrons dynamically in the scattering of hadrons. The s-wave scattering amplitude of an arbitrary hadron with the Nambu-Goldstone boson is constructed so as to satisfy the unitarity condition and the chiral low energy theorem. We find that the chiral interaction for the exotic channels is in most cases repulsive, and that the strength of the possible attractive interaction is uniquely determined. We show that the attractive interaction in exotic channels is not strong enough to generate a bound state, while the interaction in nonexotic channel genera…
We propose to use high-energy exclusive reactions for probing internal structure of exotic hadron candidates. First, the constituent counting rule of perturbative QCD can be used for finding internal configurations of an exotic hadron candidate. It is because the number of constituents ($n$), which participate in the exclusive reaction, is found by the scaling behavior of the cross section $dσ/dt \propto 1/s^{n-2}$ at large momentum transfer, where $s$ is the center-of-mass energy squared. As an example, we show that the internal structure of $Λ\, (1405)$ should be found, for example, by the r…
Heavy ion collisions (HIC) at high energies are excellent ways for producing heavy hadrons and composite particles. With upgraded detectors at RHIC and LHC, it has become possible to measure hadrons beyond their ground states. Therefore, HIC provide a new method for studying exotic hadrons that are either hadronic molecular states or compact multiquark systems. Because their structures are related to the fundamental properties of QCD, studying exotic hadrons is currently one of the most active areas of research in hadron physics. Experiments carried out at various accelerator facilities have i…
We apply the diabatic formalism, an extension of the adiabatic approximation inherent to the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approach of atomic physics, to the problem of mixing between exotic multiquark hadrons and their nearby di-hadron thresholds. The unperturbed BO eigenstates are obtained using the dynamical diquark model, while the diabatic calculation introduces a mixing potential between these states and the threshold states. We solve the resulting coupled Schrödinger equations numerically for hidden-charm tetraquarks of both open and closed strangeness to obtain physical mass eigenvalues, and e…
We study s-wave scattering of a hadron and a Nambu-Goldstone boson induced by the model-independent low energy interaction in the flavor SU(3) symmetric limit. Establishing the general structure of the low energy interaction based on group theoretical arguments, we find that the interaction in the exotic channels are in most cases repulsive, and that for possible attractive channels the interaction strengths are weak and uniquely given independent of channel. Solving the scattering problem with this interaction, we show that the attraction in the exotic channels is not strong enough to generat…
Results from a model study on the formation of exotic quark clusters at the hadronization stage of a heavy ion collision are presented. The dynamical quark molecular dynamics (qMD) model which is used is sketched, and results for exotica made of up to six (anti-)quarks are shown. The second part focuses on pentaquarks. The rapidity distribution are shown, and the distribution of strangeness is found to yield an indicator of thermalization and homogenisation of the deconfined quark system. Relative Theta^+ yields are found to be lower than thermal model estimates.
Starting from 2003, a large number of the so-called exotic hadrons, such as $X(3872)$ and $D_{s0}^*(2317)$, were discovered experimentally. Since then, understanding the nature of these states has been a central issue both theoretically and experimentally. As many of these states are located close to two hadron thresholds, they are believed to be molecular states or at least contain large molecular components. We argue that if they are indeed molecular states, in the way that the deuteron is a bound state of proton and neutron, then molecular states of three or more hadrons are likely, in the …
